rocks at bodega bay. >> reporter: searching last night and today but still no victim. the sheriff's department here identifies him as andrew batter. his apparent death a tragic accident. this is bodega bay, fishing town, tourist haunt, but on the other side bodega head, a crossing of cliffs that drop to the sea. it was here saturday evening two friends were climbing on the rocks when in an instant one slipped and fell. >> the young man's friend cried several times. >> reporter: brian schuler was here. she returned today. >> there was a detective here too. he was kind of interested in talking to the young man's friend. oh he was distressed. he looked really sad. and very quiet. >> reporter: the friend said

his buddy hit his head on rocks while falling and disappeared into the waveless. we talked to visitors who said they get too close to the cliff. because they can. >> there's areas you have to be careful. >> reporter: bodega head has two warning signs when the path starts to climb. regulars, even though who seek out the vistas, it's too dangerous. >> no one can help you, it's straight down into the water. >> reporter: only andrew batter's backpack was found in the water. the sheriff department says its search is not over. they might fly the area tomorrow. our coasts are as treacherous

as they are beautiful. we're live in santa rosa, debra villalon. new at 10:00 tonight, concern that a small fire at a recycling center could spread quickly prompted a big response from napa county fire today. the fire broke out at about 4:00 at the clover plant landfill. that's on the silverado trail. firefighters say they were able to put the fire out in just about an hour and only a quarter of an acre was born along with some trash. here's video taken before 8:00 this afternoon looking at brown, gray dry grass on mount diablo on the foothill there is. such dry conditions can be seen all over the bay area causing more concern as this heat ramps

up. ktvu's patti lee was with fire officials as they went door to door explaining how to prevent a fire hazard. >> good afternoon how are you. >> reporter: this team is one of the six stations charged with inspecting homes in marin's unincorporated area. >> i will take a quick look and i'll come back with some recommendations. >> reporter: firefighters are the conducting inspections. >> people like to be educated and stay out of the crew. >> reporter: they expect to visit 580 homes in a day. you can see where the area has been cleared for defensible space, that's because fire danger has been high. there hasn't been much rain in the past four months and rain foals for the year are below

average. >> cost me $360 to have those hedge trimmed. >> reporter: this owner got a good grade for her cuttings but was told to remove clippings alongside the road. a grass fire threatened home in the east bay but as this chopper 2 video show it is clearing of defensible space helped stop that blaze from roaring out of concern. in marin county, patti lee, ktvu news. just north of marin county and petaluma a mobile home fire sparked a fire. the mobile home on manner lane near old adobe road caught fire at about 2:00. nobody was inside at the time. the fire gutted the home and spread on to a field. meteorologist mark tamayo joins us now with more on that

red flag warning, mark. >> reporter: that red flag warning was set to expire this morning but extended by the national weather service all because of this. we still have the warm temperatures you will notice on the satellite we have clear skies out there. no fog, here's a look at some of the current observations at this 10:00 hour. it is still in the upper 70s in concord. concord 78 degrees. livermore checking in 73, here are the details on that red flag warning posted for the north bay hills and the east bay hills, posted right now all the way up until 8:00 tomorrow morning with those dry offshore winds. those winds have been backing off. that's good news but still we'll have the warm conditions and the dry conditions out there through tomorrow morning. so as a result, that fire danger remains elevated across part of the bay areas, especially for the hills. this is all controlled by the temperatures and i will let you know when a cooling trend is set to move into the reskropb. south bay fire investigators are looking into the cause of two grass fires that started within 30 minutes

of each other yesterday. the first fire was reported just before 1:30 yesterday afternoon near highway 87 in south san jose. the other broke out at a landfill in milpitas. you first saw this video last night on the 10:00 news, a resident recorded the flames that were fueled by winds of up to 25 miles per hour. some homes in that area were threatened, the fire burned 9 acres but no structures were damaged. meantime in contra costa county a fire that came close to burning four homes in her hercules is being called suspicious. firefighters say heavy brush and a large section of wooden fencing near the homes fueled the fire making matters worse they say the closest fire high drugs and -- hydrant was not working. firefighters in colorado they are facing their own challenge tonight trying to control a fast moving wildfire. coming up in just 18 minutes we'll look at what is making

this fire such a nightmare to contain. and for up to the minute weather information for your neighborhood, be sure to go to our website, ktvu.com any time and click on the weather tab. edwin ramos the man convicted of killing a father and two sons will be convicted tomorrow. prosecutors argued in court that ramos shot the three in their car thinking they were rival gang members. ramos is facing life in prison without the possibility of parol. sacramento police are investigate ago shooting last night that left four people dead including the suspected gunman. according to the sacramento bee, two of the dead were a couple in their 50s who lived in the home and are described as spiritual leaders in the fong community. one guest remains in critical condition. police say someone in another

part of the house heard the gunfire and came running. >> it was gunfire exchanged between the two of them and the suspect is now deceased. >> police say a motive for the shooting has not been determined but officers believe the incident may be gang related. richmond police are investigate ago freeway shooting that nearly killed a driver. the victim is a 57-year-old woman from newark. she was driving her lexus near hilltop drive when someone suddenly opened fire. police say the bullet went through the side door and head rest before hitting the woman in her throat. she was able to drive herself to the hospital and is in stable condition right now. police have no suspects at this time. police were called out to to investigate several robberyings. - - robberies. someone broke into a unit and

new video tonight of a two alarm fire at oakland's china town. it broke out at 8:15 on the second floor of a building. took firefighters about an hour and a half to get the fire under control. and they managed to control the fire in the rear part of the building. there's no official word on the cause yet. your camera may hold clues into the death of a participate in last month's beta breakers race. christien kafton tells us police are hoping pictures from that race will help find a person who sucker punched a man who ultimately died from his injuries. >> reporter: family and friends of steven martin set up pictures. martin was hospitalized may 20th after he was sucker punched at the beta breakers race. family members said, as for the

red and white 49ers jerseys. the women were with men wearing purple and one of those women was wearing a tutu. the key to solving this case could very well be sitting on someone's phone right now. christien kafton, ktvu news. police said they had no choice but to shoot and kill a pit bull during a probation check. they arrived at the home on pine hollow road yesterday evening just after 5:00. that's when an adult male pit bulldog charged at them. at first they fired bean bags. alcohol may have been the cause of a crash in the south bay today that left a driver critically injured. the accident happened at 5:40 this morning on highway 85 on sunny vale near the fremont exit. the driver was going more than 100 miles per hour when he hit the center divide. police say the driver was not wearing a seat belt and may

gabrielle giffords is campaigning for a former aide. giffords resigned from her position in the house to recover after being wounded. ron barber is giffords former district director and the only democrat running. the winner of tuesday's special election will finish out the rest of giffords term which ends this fall. the search is on for a gunman who opened fire at a pool party killing two people and injured others. police identifyed the gunman as monte leonard. authorities are searching for him in his hometown of montgomery alabama. >> it's sickening that these young lives were cut short and also the shooter is such a young man, it's, you know as a society we have to learn the value of life again.

>> reporter: witnesses say the shooting started after an argument about a woman. the victim's includes current and former football players. suggests that that number increased nearly 70% last year compared to 2010. according to the l.a. times, 54 people were killed by law enforcement in los angeles county in 2011. autopsy and police reports indicate 36 of those killed were armed with a gun, knife or other weapon. at least 12 of those killed were not armed. autopsy reports were not clear about the remaining six people. l.a. county officials say they are investigating each case to determine if this is an upward trend or a quote flip. the court decision made on who can see the will of late penn state football coach joe paterno. plus remembering a plane crash victim. >> family and friends say goodbye after an accident half way around the world.

year's uprising. mubarak is slipping in and out of consciousness his health has declined so that his wife and two daughters in life were given permission to visit him in prison. and now there's concern the fire may have taken at least one life. the high park fire is burning about 15 miles west of port collins. they have a report of a death but have not been able to confirm it. flames have damaged and destroyed 18 homeless. 500 people have sought shelter with the red cross. in neighboring new mexico another large wildfire sparked by lightning is burning out of control tonight. the little bear fire in the lincoln national forest has now grown to 26,000 acres. hundreds of people have been evacuated and it's estimated 36 structures including the home of the area's former police chief are destroyed.

the trial of former penn state assistant coach jerry sandusky begins tomorrow. sandusky has pleaded not guilty to more than 50 counts of child sexual abuse. many jurors in the case have ties to the penn state. another's husband has ties to a former employees. the victims must testify under their own names and that the jury will not be sequestered. a court has reportedly ordered the will of head coach joe paterno sale. the voice to bar citizen's voice says it's the first time that a will has been kept private. but the request is common among high profile individuals. paterno died in january from lung cancer not long after he was fired for failing to call

new video tonight three good samaritans went into the oakland estuary to pull out her car. the rescuers said they spotted the woman's car in the war just feet from the shore. when they got there the car was sinking so fast they decided to jump in and pull the woman to safety. no word yet on what caused the woman to lose control of her

car. thousands of athletes escaped from alcatraz today in a grueling triotholon. alie rasmus shows us what they had to endure. >> reporter: from the distance they look just like seals. the first swimmer out of the water stopped to put his shoes. the second runner passed him, put his shoes on later and he went on to win the entire race. andy pots of colorado springs completed the swim, bike and run in two hours, three minutes it's his fifth time running the triotholon. >> our course is as beautiful as it has ever been that's why people come in. >> reporter: but the biggest draw is the swim. the conditions are tough. >> 55 degrees, you have about a three to four knot current that wants to take you under the golden gate. >> reporter: swimmers have to dodge marine life, but there's

next fiscal year is $16 billion. brown's proposal to cut welfare would cut $880 million. a key aspect would end adult benefits at two years instead of four. but the proposal would also trim payments for children. and a call tonight for california state universities and colleges to eliminate or combine low enrollment programs. a new -- found that the university of california had 722 programs with fewer than 10 students each. the council's policy director said such programs are not sustainable in a world of limited education funding. some professors say the data is misleading as there may be few students majoring in a program but a large number of students taking classs in that field. contra costa are meeting tomorrow to talk about cut that is could affect fire

well, temperatures have been warming up steadily over the past several days and even right now we have mostly clear skies and mild numbers out there. that will lead to another warm day, another warm and hot day as we head into your monday. right now on the maps on live storm tracker 2, no clouds, no high clouds, no fog out there. mostly clear skies throughout the entire region. we'll take a look at the numbers throughout the area. you will notice right now it is 73 degrees at this 10:00 hour in san jose. once again concord still on the warm side in the upper 70s. there's that 78 degrees in concord, napa 67 degrees. so here we go, take a look at the highs from this afternoon. we warmed up a good eight to 12 degrees over yesterday's readings. san francisco, san francisco topped out 81, oakland in the mid-80s and look at all the numbers near santa rosa, napa, livermore and antioch. tomorrow a little bit warmer. tonight mostly clear and mile. tomorrow lots of sunshine.
