jerry sandusky is led away in handcuffs tonight after a pennsylvania jury found him guilty of dozens of counts of sexual abuse. good evening i'm julie haener. >> and i'm frank somerville. guilty on 45 of 48 counts. former penn state assistant football coach jerry sandusky is back behind bars tonight. his bail revoked after a jury convict him of sexual abuse. it's a case that has captured the attention of the entire nation. reporting craig boswell is in belafont pennsylvania where the verdicts were announced just hours ago. >> reporter: after 20 hours of deliberation, the jury finds jerry sandusky guilty on 45 of

48 charges in his child sexual abuse trial. at first cheering and then angry chanting. >> rot in hell. >> reporter: as jerry sandusky is led out of the courtroom in handcuffs. he sat quietly while his wife dottie looked on shaking. he stood accused on 10 counts of sexual assault abuse. >> we were attempting to climb mount everest from the bottom of the mountain. well obviously we didn't make it. >> reporter: thursday night, sandusky's own adopted son matt claimed he was also molested. the sequestered jury did not know about that deliberation. during closing arguments, sandusky was described as a pedophile preys on children from his charity.

his attorneys say they will appeal. in belfonte pennsylvania, craig boswell. >> more details, tonight's verdict is not the end of the case. at least two formal investigations are looking at how penn state handled the case and two senior individuals are facing criminal charges for failing to report the suspected child abuse and then lying about it under oath. and in 20 minutes tonight, the case of the south bay man on trial for assaulting a priest he says molested him years ago. there's word tonight that a kidnapper paroled this week after decades blind bars is now living in mountain view. matt keller is live now in mountain view where people are just learning about their parolee living in their community.

>> reporter: his mother lives here in this condominium community and neighbors told me they remember her son's infamous crime. mountain view police told me 57- year-old richard shellingfield arrived in the city last night. they would not confirm his exact location but his mother mary lives here. >> is richard here? are you planning on him being here? >> reporter: she said he wasn't there and did not know if he would be. but the mountain view police told us they will continue to work closer with paroled shellinfeld to protect the community. james shellingfeld and wood are still in prison. another brother john spoke to us from his business. >> what they did was horrible,

by the same token they've been in prison for a long time. >> reporter: the parol family has heard about the case and has mixed feelings about an ininfamous parolee living near by. >> it's very scary and unnerving. >> just some old guy that got in a big mess many years ago. it's not going to freak me out. >> reporter: police say schoenfeld is being ordered to stay away from any victims or their families. reporting live in mountain view, matt keller. a soldier from the central valley has died in afghanistan. 22-year-old sergeant jose rodriguez was killed on tuesday. he was from the town of gustine. he died fighting in kandahar. he died by enemy fire.

at 10:30, the story of a danville marine killed in afghanistan. his family and friends came together tonight as the community prepares to honor him in a big way tomorrow. in oakland, police are investigating two deaths. one is considered suspicious, the other a homicide. earlier at about 1:30 this morning a woman's body was found in the oakland hills near highway 13 and mountain boulevard. police described that victim as a young african american woman we're told that she suffered a gunshot wound. so far that woman has not been identified. the other body was spotted by an amtrak conductor in a canal near the coliseum. police say it appears the body had been in the drainage ditch for some time. detectives said the body was partially in the water. the water in the canal goes in and out with the tide. >> the tide comes out and the tide goes downright here so sometimes this is completely full. and then it drains completely out. so you never know where that

body came from. >> reporter: police say they'll have to wait until monday for information from the coroner's office about the man's identity and cause of death but they do consider it to be suspicious. pride weekend is under way tonight in san francisco. the festivities kicked off about 7:00 this evening with hundred s of people taking part. amber lee is live in the city to tell us tonight's march was dedicated to one individual. >> reporter: in the castro the mood is festive because it is gay pride week. but the message is also somber, say no to hate. tonight's ninth annual transgender march was dedicated to this transgender woman who was killed in oakland. marching publicly tonight is a new experience for many. some came carrying signs honoring 37-year-old brandy martell a transgender woman shot and killed in the streets of oakland. >> i just miss her so much and i can't wait till they catch

this person. because it really has our community in an uproar. >> reporter: organizers told us this march started after the killing of a transgender teen arajo in 2002, they are disgruntled that years later transgenders are still been murdered. >> to increase employment and to decrease unemployment in our transgender community. you have our commitment to do that together with you. >> reporter: but many transgenders told us acceptance is hard to find, especially outside of san francisco. >> a lot of these people are not in san francisco, they're taking a bus back to the east bay. that's what we need to work on. >> reporter: some transgenders told us being open about their identity has caused pain that few can understand. 50-year-old leon mastervoy says

it's been almost three weeks but a proposed state tax on tobacco has been defeated. proposition 29 was too close to call. but now it's losing by a narrow margin of 200 votes. today supporters of the proposition conceded. jana katsuyama is live now in san francisco with what may have contributed to prop 29s defeat, jana. >> reporter: the proposition would have increased the tax on cigarette packs. for weeks the fate of the tobacco tax was up in the air. but today it was clear the tax had lost at the ballot box. today this store's owner, says it would have hurt his

on an up note. the dow closed up 67, the nasdaq was up 33. financial stocks rose today too. state lawmakers are working on a new plan to regulate california's mortgage industry. previous efforts had stalled. the new laws would prevent lenders from foreclosing while loan modifications are pending. they would also allow lenders to have a single point of contact for borrowers. people who play games on the zynga website are now expected to see adds. the move is part of a strategy to follow its users beyond the social networking site. sponsors stories add

a fire at an air traffic facility in atlantic city virginia caused traffic for travelers all over the country. the loss of electronics meant airlines could not track their flights as quickly as usual and hundreds of flights ended up being cancelled. there were also big delays at san francisco international airport. in some cases arrivals and departures were as much as a couple of hours late because of the low clouds and drizzle. flights to and from the east coast were also delayed because of intense thunderstorms back east. the most recent happened on 19th and capp street. the other about five blocks away on june 15th. both incidents involved two attackers and the descriptions are similar in both cases. the two men approached the women from behind, one is short, the other tall. police say both may be latino

or one latino and one black. a new twist today in the trial of will lynch. he's the man accused of beating up the priest who allegedly molested him as a child. now lynches attorneys are asking for a mistrial. >> reporter: will lynch's defense team emerged from the courthouse today upbeat. after their meeting with the district attorney's office and the judge. attorney pat harris showed us a copy of a compliant filed today. a motion for a mistrial based on misconduct by the prosecution specifically vicki jemetti. will lynch is accused of beating up father charles lindner. lynch claims he and his brother were abused by father lidner. >> she questioned him and he

lied about a very material fact in this specific intense whether or not he had molested lynch and he continued. the fact that he purgered himself, this trial should have been called off. >> reporter: the motion that it is misconduct when a prosecutor informs the court, the defense and jury that a witness may not tell the truth and that the prosecution is somehow precluded from calling that witness at all. the legal back and forth may not be resolved on monday even if the judge sides with the prosecution. legal experts say lidner can still invoke the fifth amendment. in morgan hill police say they've made an arrest now in a hit-and-run that left a 22-year- old plan badly injured. 28-year-old sandra arias has been arrested and charged with felony hit-and-run. police say her volkswagen

recovered a body today at the sonoma county coast. a fisherman found the body just before 6:00 this mortgage off bodega head. the sonoma sheriff's office is now investigating. a 22-year-old santa rosa man was reported missing on june 9th. bader reportedly fell from a cliff at bodega bay. a couple claimed not guilty of shooting a man who was reportedly their daughter's pimp. the couple believed had turned their 17-year-old daughter into a prostitute. but their attorney said evidence shows plenty of other people apparently wanted sneed dead. >> the prosecution has provided insufficient evidence to show that our clients were the only people that had a motive to shoot mr. sneed. >> i would hope that a jury will look at it and see that

while we may have a great deal of sympathy for what occurred and the frustration of the parents, it's still not acceptable behavior for a civilized society. >> reporter: the couple remained in jail in lieu of $2 million jail. they are due back in court next monday. changes are on the way in a string of fires of homeless encampments throughout the bay. city leaders are changing their strategy when it comes to combating homelessness. firefighters sprang into action when they were called shortly after 9:00 this morning to a homes encampment near tully and center road. now investigators are looking into the cause. >> since it's a homeless encampment it leads us to that suspicion that it was a heating source or cooking source. >> reporter: city officials say there are 60 homeless encampments in san jose which

wind whipped flames today fogged the city of saratoga springs. authorities there ordered the evacuation of 1,600 homes. the fire started yesterday near a dump. the bureau of land management says it was started by target shooters when a boulder hit a rock and caused a spark. the discovery oaf a dead baby in placer county is now being treated as a homicide. the body was discovered in a trash bag near auburn. a woman walking noticed a bag and smelled a strong odor. the baby was near term about three to six weeks before it was due. there's no word on the gender or whether the baby was delivered alive. a santa clara superior court judge sentenced a vietnamese man for attacking a

demanding higher pay. right now they earn less than $200 a month. in some places they've taken over police barracks and burned files and furniture. the officers are also demanding direct talks with bolivia's president. in norway, the testimony ended today in the trial of brevick. he admits of killing 72 people. brevick claims h he is a resistant fighter that was trying to save the áf his country. general motors has issued a recall for almost a half million cars. gm says the models of its popular chevy cruze run the risk of fire. the fire can start when oil leak are spilled into a hot shield under the engine. the recall involves 7,200 cars made between 2010 and may of this year. it was the biggest recall for

new at 10:00 a new facility that many say provides a valuable service for military veterans opened its doors today in palo alto. rita williams went inside for a tour and talked with some of the men and women there who say the center will help them heal. with that the v.a.'s newest mental health center opened in palo alto. after two tours of duty in iraq, army veteran chris hurt knows firsthand the mental hurt military men and women bring with them. >> i wasn't going outside anymore. i was just locking myself up and i was just drinking excessively. >> reporter: suffering from post-traumatic stress, hurt was briefly committed to a

psychiatric unit in the old facility. >> compared to the old place it's night and day. it's amazing. >> reporter: the new center is designed to be therapeutic from the gardens to the windows. >> when you walk in and get that comfortable feeling it's a great deal. >> reporter: navy veteran dawn saugen walked into the old psychiatric ward 17 months ago deeply depressed. >> i was opt brink of taking my own life. >> reporter: in this country about 18 veterans a day do commit suicide. >> in the va we're making some progress. but it's important i think to remember that no suicide is tolerable. >> reporter: under criticism, the v.a. has now started hiring nearly 2,000 mental health staffers nationwide. more people and more centers like this one the v.a. says will help heal the invisible wounds of war.

in palo alto, rita williams ktvu channel 2 news. two first responders were honored today in the south bay for a quick thinking rescue. paramedics sean ellis and emt bryan newton saw flames coming from a home in san jose last week so they stopped their vehicle and ran inside to rescue a sleeping teenager. >> i can't really thank them enough for what they've done. but, yeah. i will remember them for my life, forever. >> the two are quite modest about the incident. they say they were just doing their jobs and that they don't consider themselves to be heros. ground breaking ceremonies in the east bay today marked the start of some long awaited road improvement work on highway 4. caltrans says the project will complete a four lane roadway from south of laurel road. caltrans is also building an interchange. it's hoped that the new lanes will ease traffic congestions

today you can see the range from the upper 60s in pacifica to the 60s around the bay. warmest locations inland in the low to mid-70s. if you thought the temperatures were belove average you were wrong. 83degrees only maxing out at 65. forecast headlines for tonight we do have this, more clouds cover. drizzle out there. the weekend forecast features morning overcast and cool weather pattern remains in place. the extended we gradually continue to increase those numbers. as you can see this cold front weakening over northern california, increasing showers. this will be the source of a few sprinkles or some drizzle for the other night hours. as we head into saturday the cloud will be on the decrease. once the clouds move out, on shore winds 20 to 0 miles per hour as we head into the afternoon hours. here is our forecast model
