the independence day holiday is upon us. the first big fireworks show actually took place tonight. in fact, it just wrapped up minutes ago with more on tap for tomorrow. good evening i'm frank somerville. >> and i'm julie haener. today police begin their dui patrols. new at 10:00, matt keller is in

campbell after riding with officers on dui patrol. >> reporter: looking deputies begin their dui patrol looking to keep drunk drivers off the roads. 18 kegs were ordered waiting for pick up as people get ready to celebrate independence day with a beer or two. >> a lot of the cocktail drinks and white wine is very hot this week and beer is the most popular thing. a lot of kegs. >> reporter: no holiday time off for santa clara county sheriff deputies. 700 people were arrested for drunk driving over the fourth of july weekend last year. tuttle is asking to add to that by watching signs. >> drifting within the lane or drifting tr lane to lane. >> reporter: a first time drunk driving conviction means you could lose your license for at least four months, face up to

six months in jail, face up to six months in -- >> if you're not going to be conscious of what you're really drinking really assign a designated driver. i know that sounds trite and old fashioned but that's the best way to avoid being stopped and going through this ordeal. >> reporter: campbell and morgan hill police are doing saturation this weekend. statistics find that 4th of july is the deadliest holiday. aaa says teens make up about 10% of those deaths. san francisco police said

they busted a homemade fireworks operation in the mission district. police got a tip that someone had illegal fireworks on the 3300 block near guerrero. inside police said they found 63 ose devices as well as a handgun. they arrested jerry lopez, he was charged with position of education explosives and firearms. firefighters are also preparing for tomorrow. police plan to have extra teams across the city tomorrow, they estimate that every fourth of july they get about 250 calls that specifically about illegal fireworks or people firing their guns into the air.

new at 10 10 -- 10:00 the last minute preparations are on the way for the 4th of july. >> reporter: municipal pier is closed. this is one of the site that is the fireworks will be launched tomorrow night. the moon is hanging over the city, if you look over to ghirardelli square, you can see the g the lit up in red, white and blue. this is how things looked last 4th of july. workers hope for clear skies as they load up the more than 600 individual fireworks shells that will be blasted from this barge in the bay. >> everything is going to go off if you do it correctly in

synchronizety, it'll be cool. >> reporter: these are the big boys. jeff wilson has his fingers crossed the fog won't roll in to spoil the show. >> it's a big shell, it's beautiful, and if you can't see it it's just wasted. >> reporter: the show is expected to draw hundreds of thousands to the city. folks usually line the waterfront. the franciscan restaurant with its big windows facing the bay should be packed. >> we're ready to go, and extremely proud. >> reporter: many will head on to the bay to see the boat by boat. the red and white fleet has already sold all 870 feets on its four boats. surprisingly it's not just tourists who take the cruise. >> i would say 4th of july

cruises are about 80% locals. >> reporter: we saw signs for 4th of july cruises, live in a very pleasant and clear san francisco ken wayne, ktvu news. at 10:45, a coast guard boat has plans for the 4th of july festivities. at 10:30 the bay area community that got an early jump on the 4th of july with festivities. just because it's 4th of july it doesn't mean parking is free. two years ago the municipal agency eliminated free parking on all but three holidays, thanksgiving, christmas and new years day. new at 10:00, oakland

police are expressing concern of four missing boys. they are identified as paradise mahasin who suffering from epilepsy, antwan johnson, six, an african american boy, zaniyyah nyema johnson, and alyaya johnson. the 3-year-old's mother, stepfather and babysitter are all under arrest in connection with the toddler's injuries. nurses at seven bay area hospitals operated by sutter health are wrapping up a one day strike but they won't be able to go back to work until sunday. 3,500 nurses with the california nurses association as well as several other x-ray

technicians walked off of work at 7:00. even though it is a one day strike, sutter plans to use replacement nurses for five days. the walk out affects alta bates. half way through 2012 and a troubling trend is emerging in san francisco. the city has seen a spike in homicides with 11 people killed in june alone. so far this year there have been 39 homicides in the city. that's compared to 50 during all of last year and 50 the year prior to that. hundreds of people are grieving tonight for one of those homicide victims. he was a student at city college who police say was executed at his home on ingle

side. jana katsuyama was there where family and friends said he was a human not a number. >> i'm still like in shock, i'm still not believing it. i've seen his body today. >> the funeral hall couldn't hold all the mourners, people lined up outside in the hall ways and out in the street mourning the death of a young man they said had a passion for life. >> he was a fun guy to be around with. like pure innocent. never had hate toward nobody. >> it's shocking, i mean. i was just state optimist. >> reporter: police found him dead. >> it appears the suspect shot this young man execution style. suffered gunshot wounds to the head and we don't believe this person was involved in any criminal activity. >> reporter: kasaya was a student at city college who had

come from ethiopia with his family. he loved soccer and dreamed of returning to ethiopia to train and teach children. now his teammates and community wondering why someone would kill a young man. >> i cannot picture him doing anything wrong for someone to come after him like that. it's so sad. >> it's just unjust to take people like that away from you. >> reporter: the family plans to take his body back to ethiopai to bury him. police hope someone can turn in a tip to help catch this shooter and get this family some peace. jana katsuyama, ktvu news. a ruling today at the state capital freezes $30 million in redevelopment funds meant for the new 49ers stadium in santa clara. a judge granted a temporary orlder to hold the disputed money in reserve -- temporary order to hold the disputed

money in reserve. the county voted to use the money to improve schools instead. one case out of california is slated to go before the ninth circuit court of appeals in september. but the obama administration wants to speed up the process saying it agrees with lower court rulings that found the act unconstitutional. still obama has not struck the ban until there's a final court ruling. the latest gallup tracking poll still shows obama has a lead 48 to 44%. another polls also show obama leading. but a lot can change because the election is still five

investors from labor. >> if you can believe that irony, they are raising money from union trust funds and then turning around and doing this kind of thing with what they buy with that money. >> ktvu tried to reach management of the frank hotel but no one was available today due to the holiday. there is word tonight city college of san francisco has been given eight months to prove it should not lose its accreditation. something it needs in order to receive public funding. according to the san francisco chronicle, the school is sited for failing to fix ongoing problems. the school must approve the school by mid-march. some 90,000 students are enrolled at city college. the latest field poll has found mixed reaction to the recent budget cuts. when asked about the latest round of cuts 37% said they

went too far. 28% said they didn't go far enough and 24% said they were just about right. >> and overwhelming 72% said they are opposed to the proposed automatic spending cuts that would go into effect if governor brown's tax hikes are defeated in november. just 19% said they favored those cuts and 9% said they had no opinion. arson investigators say it appears a big fire in san francisco this morning was deliberately set. and tonight we have exclusive video of neighbors arguing with one of the suspects because of what he was reportedly carrying when he came out of building. ktvu's david stevenson has also learned the buildings owner has been fined thousands of dollars. >> reporter: san francisco fire investigators say this morning's four alarm fire at 170atwell street in the city's

bellview district -- the fire broke out in what investigators say was an abandoned building taken over by squatters. >> so we've been there for a week. my girlfriend was up stair, i was down stared. >> reporter: police arrested two people for recklessness. this video obtained by ktvu shows one of the suspects arguing with neighbors after they say they saw him exiting the building with a gas can. >> he dropped the gas can, walked directly across the street. >> reporter: the building had been boarded up since the fire. county building inspectors investigated the property as a hazardous or abandoned building. noonan wracked up $16,000 in fines. >> maybe all of this could have been prevented if somebody from the city or whoever is

we're just getting word of a small earthquake in pacifica that hit just a few minutes ago. the us geological center services a magnitude 2.6 quake hit about 10 minuting a. earlier this evening there were three small quakes reported south of there. the san andres fault runs through that part of the peninsula. there's disaappointment at lake tahoe after the u.s. olympic announced it will nod -- will not bid for the olympics, but some found a silver lining in that. >> reporter: the u.s. olympic committee announced they're not making any bids to host the winter games in 2022. news that has an impact on andy

will go for the winter games in 2026. they will have that decision by december of this year. in truckee, demonte lewis for ktvu channel 2. and more details now, gavin newsom released a statement saying i am disappointed with the decision today. lake tahoe has a long and storied history with the o livic movement and is the perfect locations for the winter games. and more information on a teen who was killed by vallejo police. police have identified as jared hewie. police say they were trying to arrest hewie when he pointed a gun at officers. hewie ended up dying on the scene. you can hear more than a dozen shots. this was the third fatal shooting by vallejo police officers in the past five

lingering, workers are cleaning up. many told us tonight's spectacular show is not one they will soon forget. the fireworks show started about an hour ago delighting the estimated 6,000 that attended. it's richmond's 4th annual preevent. >> i like it it's nice. >> reporter: what do you like about it? >> i like to bring my kids, they're enjoying it, screaming. >> reporter: the oakland east bay symphony provided the prelude. they also provided the explosions set against the night sky. earlier in the evening the

union city family is recovering tonight after a violent home invasion and shooting. abbie romama says she was in her yard when three men approached her, forced her

inside the home and started ransacking the place. abbie's son daniel was also home at the time. >> i said this can't be happening. and my adrenaline became fight. and that's what i did. i fought back. >> daniel says the men pistol whipped him and shot his mother in the abdomen. the three men got away with just cell phones and ipods. police are now looking for information that could lead them to the robbers. in news of the world tonight in pakistan, trucks carrying supplies for nato are set to cross the border into afghanistan for the first time in seven months. pakistan agreed to open the border after secretary of state hillary clinton apologized for the killing of 24 pakistani troops last september. in france, federal agents

searched the home and office of nicholas sarkozi. he has denied the allegations while he was president he was immune from prosecution but not anymore since he lost his reelection bid last month. in china the government has announced a ban on shark fin soup but the ban is limited. essentially it says that shark fin soup will not be served at official banquets starting in three years. shark fin soup is blamed for the sharp decline of sharks. environmentalists are applauding the move. new figures suggest this year could be the first year for new car sales since 2007. auto sales were up 22% compared to a year ago. chrysler sales are up 20%, gm up 16% and ford up 7%. consumer psychologists say any

up tick in auto sales is a positive sign because people don't buy cars unless they feel confident about their finances. the u.s. food and drug administration has approved a first overthe counter hiv test. the ora quick kit allows people to check themselves for the virus that causes aid in the privacy of their home. the test uses a mouth swab and can test for hiv in saliva within 20 minutes. a new challenge spreading across you tube is putting kids at risk and all it takes are two items that are ready available. it's called the ice and salt challenge. thousands of videos show people using the two ingredients to create conditions similar to frostbite and the object is to see how long they can with stand the pain. but some of the videos also show pictures like this of injury that is can result. >> in one sense the best

more developing news tonight, this time from southern california. these are live pictures here of a wildfire that is burning near

palm dale. that's about 50 miles north of los angeles. it started just after 9:00 tonight and has already burned some 250 acres. firefighters are working to protect ranch homes in the area. but right now if there is any good news it's that the flames seem to be moving away from populated areas. and so far no evacuations have been ordered. fireworks are suspected to have caused a much smaller wildfire in the marine head lands today. news chopper 2 was over head 15 minutes after that fire started at 2:45 this afternoon. a spokesperson says crews kept the fire to half an acre. a 40-year-old man is being held in the marin county jail on arson charges. the coast guard is implementing safety zones tomorrow for the 4th of july. one safety zone will be 1,000 feet off of pier 29. the other will be off at aquatic park. both will be in effect tomorrow

night from 8:30 to 10:15 for the fireworks shows. boaters who enter this zone could be fined up to $5,000. >> the coast guard wants to remind boaters to play it safe for the holiday tomorrow. >> reporter: the 4th of july is a popular time to be out on the san francisco bay. dan baker spent the afternoon getting his boat ready for what has become a yearly outing. sailing to watch the local fireworks show. >> it becomes an annual just like a bar-b-que. the fireworks are spectacular, they are bursting overhead. >> reporter: today i road with the coast guard. the coast guard says it and other law enforcement agencies will be out on the water. >> we reck lend you have a life

jacket for -- recommend that you have a life jacket for everyone on board. >> reporter: boating under the influence can get you in just as much trouble as driving under the influence. penalties and fines are similar to being convicted for dui. >> it's just like driving a car at .08 and you're over the little and you can't be charged with boating under the influence of alcohol. >> reporter: baker says that he will take it safe. >> i'm usually the designated driver. all the adults are keeping an eyeball on the kids and everybody is watching out for the boats all the time. >> reporter: boating safety is about paying attention, respecting the water and using common sense. sal castaneda, ktvu channel 2 news. we have minor changes on the horizon for your 4th of july holiday.

unfortunately one of those changes will be fog returning to the area by tomorrow night. satellite radar giving you a view of mostly clear skies having a hard time working its way back to the coastline. a little explanation about what's going on out there at this hour. we've got a trough that passed through earlier today. and it set up a northerly flow. we have a second system that will be working its way closer to the coast tomorrow. that's going to enhance the low clouds and bring the fog back to our area by tomorrow night. picking it up tomorrow morning, we have clouds, a quick burn off is what we're looking for. perhaps just a few clouds over the coastline for the afternoon. it's going to be a great day for those backyard bar-b-ques, the parades and maybe even a pool party. looks like the fog hoping to make it way back in and around the coastline. looks like it's going to hold off by about 9:00 or so. still right along the coast,
