a fight before hit and run accident that put a 29-year-old cal fire firefighter in a coma. it was shot last thanksgiving inside a jack in the box on gary street in san francisco. the defense attorney for the 24- year-old said firefighter albert bartal started it by pushing a trash can to a group of people and punching him in the face when he tried to intervene. prosecutors say he later hit the firefighter with a suv. his attorney said that someone else was doing the driving. the man was been in a coma ever since. >> a judge sentenced a man to 165 areas in prison for lifting his two daughters. a jury convicted him in may on 11 counts of committing a lewd act with a child under 14. the daughter is now 20 -- daughters testified against him. he pleaded no contest to charges he molested his stepdaughter. the east oakland sports

he stabbed her 24 times after lying in wait in 2009 at the bay valley medical center. they say he was angry that she had ended their abusive 17 year relationship. the couple had two teen children. >> the fate of the suspended san francisco sheriff could be decided next week and details of the hearing schedule are now set. his wife will fly into testify for the first evening of the hearing on wednesday. she has called it a witch hunt. he was suspended after pleading guilty to false imprisonment of his wife. >> a cal fire spokesperson said a 19-year-old man is in custody tonight accused of setting five wild land fires in sonoma and san mateo. the 19-year-old was arrested on

wednesday. cal fire said he admitted setting the fires before being booked. he is being held in sonoma jail in lie, of $16,000 bail. is he due back in court on july 18th. . >> one man is in jail after a one alarm fire in concord led officers to a marijuana growing operation. the fire was reported after five this morning at a home in the 1100 block of saint francis drive. investigators say the fire started in the basement where the electrical system appears to have been rewired to bypass the pg&e meter. >> illegal bypass, the fire may be related to it, that's under investigation. as is the activities of the resident prior to the fire. >> reporter: our crew was there as officers carried marijuana plants, grow lights and other equipment from the home. concord police arrested a 35- year-old for possession of marijuana for sale. >> santa cruz police looking for an arsonist and we have a sketch.

is he a black man in his mid to late 30s, six feet tall, act 180 pounds. early yesterday a witness to the fire on church street saw a man inside the building, the witness said the man apologized and then escaped on a bike. nobody was hurt in the fire. >> a 2-year-old boy is dead and his grandparents in critical condition tonight after a fire swept through their home this morning. paul chambers said that it the tragedy could have claimed more lives if not for the quick thinking of a nearby construction crew. >> investigators spent the morning trying to find what caused a fire that killed a 2- year-old. just before nine crews got a call flames from the second story. >> i was sleeping heard fire trucks and ambulance and i thought it was from a fire. >> reporter: she snapped those photographs, inside the home the little boy and his grandparents. grandparents and another man were trapped. family say the boy was dropped

during the rescue. paul chambers. >> the san jose fire department said that it has been awarded almost $9 million in federal money to pay for more firefighters but they said that still won't solve its staffing problems. crews stretched thin and staffing levels are below what they were ten years ago. a string of arson fires near kelley park is only compounding the problem. >> when we have someone starting fires all it does is just make worst problems and limited resources. >> reporter: the fire department expects to fire 27 new firefighters in all. >> the governor is sending more help to fight a fire in the sierra foothill in placer. firefighters will get more helicopters. 1600 people are already at work. the fire is crewing but no homes have been lost or damaged. about 300 people have been

evacuated they are waiting and hoping for the best. >> be hard to come back and see this, you know, gone. you know -- that's a risk we run. >> got a phone call my street had been evacuate skid went for a run and saw the police and got our animals and all our stuff. >> reporter: even if they don't hear it firefighters are getting the message that it all of their it hard work is appreciated. right now there is still no word on when the fire may be under control. most of the evacuations are in yankee jim's canyon and shirt tail and it's burned more than 1300 acres at this point. also at this hour crews have a containment liana round 10% of the fire but it is still growing. it's one of three active fires in the state, all are in northern california. crews also battling the mill's fire, it's covering more than 23,000 acres.

foothills. a much cooler weather pattern into the next few days, actually today will be the coolest day in a long timet. will warm up tomorrow but it'll still be below average. today was such a plummet in high that tomorrow we will warm up but the temperatures also still be below the average. that's the point. there is a weather system to the north of us, hard to see, just pick it out. really hard to cement that's what triggered this big push of fog. when you get low to the north it just presses everything in. that's where we are now. we have a weak system that won't be there just tomorrow and the next day. it'll linger up there and when it's up there it does what? high pressure presses thing its down and low pressure spreads it out so the layer get this is big lift. that is what we got. when you felt that wind tonight, maybe you did or don't it was howling because the marine layer got stretched out and started pushing inland and it was howling in the hills tonight. they were gusting around 30 miles an hour. the forecast overnight will be in the 50s.
