warning signs up are tonight in beaches where that shark was spotted not far from where people swim. the shark was also spotted at two other beaches near by. >> reporter: the signs are out here at the beach warning people about a great white shark spotting just off the shore. the water became a little less entizing today. >> the patrol came by and said just a warning, there's a shark sighting and it's coming down this way. >> reporter: confirmation came from the sky. the best way to spot a shark is from up high. helicopters captured the shark estimating it to be 14 to 18 feet long. we were given an exclusive ride up in the helicopter to see if

up in 18 minutes the delicate operation on the way to restore vital new life to san francisco bay. authorities said they lost radar communication with a plane about 40-mile north of fair banks yesterday afternoon. two bodies were spotted inside the piper pa32 but bad weather prevented a recovery effort. the pilot was a member of the west flying club of palo alto. so far the victim's identities have been released. authorities went away with their clean up at kelly park and evicted people living there. it is the fourth such operation this year. san jose has posted notices advising the homeless of today's sweep and offered motel vouchers to more than a dozen people. the eviction and clean up come one week after a rash of

suspicions fires in kelly park. a wildfire in calusa county that has been burning for almost two weeks is now almost 100% contained. the mill fire burned 20 acres and destroyed five outbuildings. volunteer evacuations have now been lifted and roads are open for people who live in the area. the forest service is investigating what sparked that fire. the construction project to extend b.a.r.t. service to san jose began a new phase today with a bang. demolition crews started tearing down the buildings that currently sit on a piece of land where b.a.r.t.'s barryessa station. san jose police call it the largest child pornography bust in northern california history.

as ktvu's janine de la vega, authorities arrested 16 men after taking their investigation online in operation chicken hawk. >> reporter: police spanned out throughout san jose and the county surprising people they believe have child pornography in their home. 42-year-old valentine hyjack was arrested at his home. >> people think they are trading peer to peer or trading pornography peer to peer when they're actually talking to police officers. >> reporter: police arrested this teenager. neighbors say he just graduated from oak grove high school and was planning to go to san jose state. >> he's very nice. you know we always say hi and bye to him. he does my lawn. i'm really shocked. >> reporter: after searching his home, police found enough evidence on hard drives to book him. 165 detectives from san jose, santa clara, mountain view, los gatos and santa clara county teamed up to serve warrants.

examiner has identified a man who was shot and killed yesterday by police. a female officer shot 32-year- old prolong at washington and davis street near the embarcadero after he lunged at the officer with a box cutter. minutes ago the man used that box cutter to injure a coworker. in san francisco, police named a driver today who was involved in a brief chase and crashed that we told you about last night. police say 32-year-old randall evans of antioch sped away from officers and crashed into another car leaving two people with nonlife threatening injuries. authorities say evans is wanted on a federal weapons warrants and now faces more charges including suspicion and possessing of a handgun in his car. more than 100 workers

gathered outside the state building today to protest an imposed contract that cuts their pay by 5%. at the rally union representatives said that court officials are still at the table discussing alternatives. you will recall 250 workers held a one day strike on monday that shut down some courtrooms and court offices. a san francisco civil grand jury has weighed in on questionable restaurant health care surcharges that we first told you about last november. the grand jury criticized some of the restaurants they said of the restaurants surveyed 16 were profits from the surcharges which were added to the customers bills. the restaurants say surcharges are to help pay for health cover for their employees. more people in the bay area will soon be able to get their hands on a chick-fil-a-sandwich but will they want to. the new flap over gay marriage

it's a problem that could affect millions of the americans. contaminated ground water. some say the use of fertilizers is the problem. now one water agency is trying to force farmers to begin testing. ken pritchett talks with farmers who are fighting back even though both sides say something must be done to keep drinking water safe. that's tonight's special report. >> reporter: water irrigates our crops. water trickles into the ground and for many californians it's that same ground water drawn from wells that flows from their taps. but a recent uc davis study

shows 254,000 people in the basin in salinas valley are at risk of drinking water contaminated with nitrous. >> what they found was that the nitrous there is due to agriculture uses. >> reporter: landmark new rules have been at that particular timed by the regional water control board -- been adapted by the regional water control board. it's a move opposed by farmers such as luis uribe. >> i've been drinking that water for 45 years, i'm still here. nitrates or no nitrates. >> reporter: nitrates have been used for over 40 years but only recently has the link been made. the water testing rules follows a case in pescadero where 50 people farm workers and their

families were found to be drinking nitrate contaminated water for at least 10 years. >> it was a huge issue for that farm. they spent tens of thousands of dollars needing to remedy the water issues there. >> reporter: kerry lobel with puente de la costa source say families are particularly vulnerable. but lovell says most people in the area on private wells don't drink from the tap. >> i think for most of us including where i live in san gregorio we go to half-moon bay to buy our drinking water. >> reporter: marquee central farm and three other farms will fall under these new central coast rules to test and report ground water contamination. we tried to talk to the four san mateo county growers affected by this new regulation of testing and reporting to see if perhaps it was a hardship for their operations, they declined. >> really what should be done

is being done. >> reporter: danny merkley with the farm bureau federation says there's plenty of water testing already but agrees that the top concern should be ensuring clean working water to affected forms and communities. however farmers argue the new rules will be ineffective. >> quiet honestly our opinion is it would require growers to do an awful lot of paper work that would not go where it needs to to protect water quality. >> reporter: the farm bureau and other groups are appealing to the state to stop the rule changes sighting cost and that growers for decades have made wiser use of fertilizers. but studies show the issue goes beyond the coastal area. the pacific institute estimates 1 million central valley residents may have nitrate contamination drinking water and how long before the problem can be fixed? >> we don't know. decades. >> reporter: to understand the problem advocates say testing is essential. but the old question surfaces who should pay.

with kids should get a booster shot. sonoma county is investigating a person found dead at a ranch. the circumstances surrounding that death are unclear. they would not elaborate any further. an oakland plan stunned a courtroom today by pleading guilty to killing his girlfriend and her 1-year-old son. curtis martin iii made that guilty plea during the jury selection phase of his trial. martin's lawyer believes he pleaded guilty to avoid the publicity of the trial. martin will spend life in

developing. a bit of a breeze out there. tomorrow some morning cloud cover clearing back to near the shoreline and the weekend most of the bay area warms up. most of the bay area away from the coast. we always have that one exception at least in the summertime months. here we go with the satellite, a lot going on here. rain showers moving out to the east and this area of low pressure has been cooling us off. this will continue to be on the move as well. as high pressure rebuildings we're going to -- rebuilding we're going to warm up the áf again. you will notice into the weekend that high really strengthens, that warming air that sinking air mass associated with this area of high pressure that will trance -- translate to some 90s inland. the beaches with at least some fog in the morning going to be patchy in the afternoon. the beaches only warming back up into the 60s. if you are traveling, only a few clouds building up at the
