complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is the 10:00 news on ktvu channel 2. fire crews are on alert tonight worried about lightning strikes across northern california. good evening, i'm ken wayne. >> good evening everyone i'm heather holmes. well, lightning is here and more is coming bringing with it heightened fire danger. ktvu's debora villalon is live in the north bay, where several surrounding counties are under red-flag warnings. >> reporter: we're at a calfire center where they could be busy tomorrow and folks in lake and mendicino counties could wake up to some lightning-caused fires. >> this emergency command center in saint helena is already busy. >> all the strikes are

dangerous. >> reporter: and the lightning hasn't even swept in yet, but more than 300 strikes registered in six hours around yosemite, the southern signs foothills, dry lightning, the worst kind. >> there is not a whole lot of rain with it either, so that is what is concerning us is the lack of rain that follows the lightning strikes. it's not going to put any fires out on its own that it could potentially start. >> reporter: and the fire fuels are tinder dry, even though cool, cloudy days don't feel like high danger. >> the stations have extra personnel and engines are calfire is beefing up with more lightning teams, everyone remembers the severe thunderstorms four summers ago that lit up california with some 2,000 lightning fires in 26 counties. by the time they were out, a million acres burned and 15

most risk are the mountains between the sonora pass and oregon border. and today you did notice the cloud cover moving in from the south. that is monsoonal moisture that has been on the increase the past 6-12 hours. right now on live stormtracker 2 radar you can pick out the camera and a few isolated thunderstorms possible within the cells, but not a lot of rain hitting the ground. in fact, here is a closer inspection as we look at a few sprinkle around san francisco. i have been watching more activity as you can pick up to the north of calistoga and davis and sacramento areas. earlier today about an hour ago i noticed more coverage in this region. these are the ones that we're concerned about just to the sacramento area and to the east, right around the sierra. as far as the red-flag warning that is in place right now for

the northern california mountains from lake county towards mendocino county and toward sierra nevada in place react now into sunday morning with a chance of thunderstorms, and the potential for some dry lightning. coming up, i will let you know if the thunderstorm chances linger into the second half of the weekend and break down the final of our next warming trend. in plumas county this picture from the u.s. forest service shows some of the smoke and flames from the chips fire. it's burning in the flumas national forest near the town of belden in the feather river canyon. officials have lifted mandatory evacuation orders. better news for crews near redding. significant progress has been made against the salt creek fire. it's now about 70% contained.

have video of three suspects robbing a jewelry store. >> reporter: it happened to quickly, a man with a gun was on top of this jewelry storeowner and her husband before they knew it. as the gunman jump officer the counter, two others in all black moved in behind him. five cameras inside recorded it. when one employee made a run for the door, they tackled him to the ground. then the 87-year-old mann the right side of the screen went after the man with the gun before he was also slammed to the floor hitting his head on a jewelry case. but whether the masked-men made they are getaway, one camera caught a clean view of least one of their faces. >> he came in to the front door with a sledgehammer through the glass. >> a day earlier on the other side of the bay, pave's jewelry store in oakland was the target of a similar robbery.

there are reports tonight that the man accuse of shooting former congresswoman gabby girlfriends is set to accept' plea-deal. according to the los angeles times details of the deal are not available, but loughner will likely pled guilty to some of the federal charges against him in change for a prison sentence. that way he would not risk the death penalty a trial. his next court date is tuesday. fire investigators are still on the scene of a glass fire in santa cruz coming up next the las cumbres fire is now out, but investigators say it will take days to figure out what sparked the fire. as ktvu's patti lee tells us mountain residents knew what to do when the fire started. >> reporter: 250 firefighters, four air tankers and two helicopters were key to beating back these flames. >> i woke up to helicopter sounds. and then i looked out and it was all of? smoke and he thought it was smog at first. >> reporter:

a 911 call this morning alerted calfire to smoke sightings in the las cumbres neighborhood. crews spotted flames around boulder creek. because of heavy cloud cover the fire was essentially believed to cover 30 acres. it turned out to be just over six acres, but on tough terrain. it's tough acserious one way in and one way out, so if there were evacuations it could have been a difficult situation to get fire equipment in and residents out. >> reporter: chp and the santa cruz sheriff's department were on hand to assist. >> the area is rural and mountainous. >> reporter: one homeowner evacuated voluntary. while others got ready to leave. >> it wasn't sort of immediate danger, but i thought, let's pack our stuff. >> right through the canyon and to the house. >> reporter: she watched from they are deck as men and machine fought fire
