five thousand acres and growing. we have the latest on two out of control wildfires that have prompted evacuations in lake county. good evening i'm ken wayne. heather holmes is off tonight. we begin tonight with developing news in lake county where two major wildfires are still burning out of control at this hour. this is video taken by eye chopper 2. at least one structure has been confirmed destroyed, there may be others and evacuations have been ordered for residents including in the community of spring valley which is not far from

indian reservoir. you can see the flames are very intention. strike crews have been called in from all over the bay area to assist in this fire which is still out of control. the fires are burning east of clear lake, the y fire is burning near the community of clear lakes oaks. that's near the community of 53. the walker fire is burning farther east south of indian valley reservoir. we have team coverage tonight. ktvu's meteorologist mark tamayo is in the weather center but we begin with matt keller who is live in san helena with the very latest. >> reporter: that's right, the fire department has sent a truck in to san helena. here's video just into our newsroom the biggest fire is the y fire it started near highways 20 and 53 it's 5,000

acres and growing. one structure has been destroyed. the valley community is threatened by the flames. an evacuation center has been set up at the elks drive on highway 20 just west of highway 53. firefighters say the hot temperatures are allowing the fires to spread more rapidly. the relative humidity, amount of moisture in the air is very, very low and having those conditions, causes the fire to spot more. so the fire can jump ahead in advance of itself. the walker fire and walker ridge near the lake calusa fire line is about 500 acres but is burning in a rural area with few homes in its path. it's in really rough and remote terrain. all three fires have zero containment tonight. highway20 and highway 16 in colusa county first major

intersection heading west from the sacramento valley is closed as well. between 400 and 500 firefighters are battling the fire today at the san helena station. calfire is hoping to have three times that number soon. we're continuing to update the information we have on this fire. we're going to get more information and bring it to you live. we turn now to ktvu's meteorologist mark tamayo with a look at the fire. >> reporter: 1,000 acres per hour, think about that 1,000 acres per hour. these are pictures of the fire. the fire zone this region. we can tell you the conditions around the fire during the 3:00 hour when things were just starting they had a temperature of 104 degrees. humidity level down to 4%. here's a look at the most recent observations. it is still warm out there but

temperatures have been coming down. wind speeds are not extreme. but i will tell you these are weather sensors around the fire. within the fire itself you can get erratic winds. strongs blowing harderment you get those erratic winds within the fire zone. humidity levels have been coming up so that has been an improvement right around 19%. another key factor for the fire crews will be the terrain as we take a closer look with our mapping system here as you can pick out. there's all the terrain to the north of 53 and 20 with all those hills and very dry. this area has experienced extreme heat with temperatures at or above 100 degrees. this will continue to be an issue. of course the fire attack over the next few days. we'll take a look at the forecast for the fire zone as we head into monday. >> thank you, mark. we have more images of the clear lake fires sent to us.

this one is coming from allen mcallister. she appears to be looking toward the fire from a distance. there's a great deal of smoke in the sky. this next picture is quite dramatic. this shows a lot of smoke along the highway near clear lake. you can see vehicles to give you some perspective on just how big this fire is. this picture of the fire from much farther away showing a huge plume of smoke up in the sky. we got these pictures just a few hours ago around 7:00 p.m. our coverage continues throughout this newscast. we'll have a live update from the calfire command center at 10:30 tonight. plus you can check ktvu.com for up to the minute updates on the wildfires burning in lake county. meantime mandatory evacuations are under way in parts of plumas county. as an out of control fire threatening communities there. the fire has burned 30,000 acres over the last two weeks. more than 600 structures are

threatened most of them homes. right now that fire is just 8% contained. fire officials say they likely won't have the fire contained until the end of the month. a fire in fresno has forced dozens of people from their homes. the rookie terrain and high temperatures are making it easier to -- making it harder to fight the flames. the three car accident on southbound interstate 680 at the procanyon exit happenedded around 1:20 this morning. the cars crashed near a construction zone but none of the construction workers was injured. witnesses say one of the cars involved was speeding and had its lights off. >> the occupant of the first

vehicle, the speeding vehicle was killed and that car burst into flames. the occupants of the second vehicle was person was killed at the collision scene and one person was taken to the hospital. >> authorities haven't released the condition of the injured victim or the names of the two people who were killed. in benetia the driver of a van that overturn died. one man is dead, three others injured. one of them critically. the latest shooting happened around 5:30 this evening on myrtle and west 15th street in oakland. one man was killed the other was taken to the hospital with a leg wound. that man is expected to survive. an investigation reveals that the men were injured as people

in two cars shot at each other. police on the scene say the two shootings may be connected. that earlier shooting happened at 12th street and mandela parkway. when police arrived on the scene they found the driver of this honda accord had been shot twice. one woman says she heard the shooting. >> about six rapid shots. and a car driving to where it happened. police say another man was -- >> police say a man was injured by the shooting. he is expected to survive. a spokesman for b.a.r.t. says it's still unclear why the man was on the tracks. he says the train operator was aware he may have hit something and stopped the train. the glen mark station was shut down for several hours.

the victim's name has not been released. 28-year-old mary doring has been identified as the person that died last thursday. authorities say she was in the middle of freeway when she was struck by a mini van. she was apparently with a dog but it's not clear if the dog was hit. a team of investigators in charge of looking into the massive fire at the chevron refinery may be able to enter the area of the fire. chevron's help center is back open tomorrow. it's located at the nevin community center in richmond. the center is open from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on weekdays and 8:00 a.m.

until noon on saturday. analysts blame the chevron fire along with two other major factors for a spike in gas prices. the lundburg survey shows gas is averaging around $3.69. aaa reports $3.99 in california, 4.17 in san francisco. the price of crude oil and shortage of corn is contributing to the spike. corn is needed to make ethanol, a required ingredient in gasoline. officials at serenity house could be evicted as soon as tomorrow unless they come up with thousands of dollars of back rent. but not everyone is upset.

our developing news coverage continues. chopper2 is live right now in lake county where two major fires are still burning out of control this evening. what we know so far is at least 5,000 acres have burned and you can tell by these live pictures

that the fire is still very intense as the camera zooms in. you can get an idea of just how large those flames are. we saw earlier pictures with big power lines in the foreground that could give you some perspective and it looks like the flames were 30, 40, 50 feet. maybe even higher than that. the fire is still burning out of control in lake county. we want to show you some video from the ground. evacuations are under way at the community of spring valley. 300 people are out of their homes there. that's 300 miles east on the lake shore of clear lake. both fires started late this afternoon. so far the cause of that fire is not known. you can see structures at least one structure there has been destroyed. we'll keep on this story throughout the newscast. the three day party is wrapping up for tens of thousands of music fans in golden gate park. cara liu is outside the lands festival where the final act

was a motown legend. >> reporter: it sure was. and just within the hour clean up got under way. you can see heavy machinery and still some straglers. and for those who were here, they say stevie wonder did not disappointment. >> - - disappoint. >> the three day festival in golden gate park sold out for a second consecutive year an estimated 65,000 turned out each day braving the chilly san francisco summer weather. >> we're not used to the fog and cold during summer. a lot of people came dressed like from socal dressed expecting warm weather.

so all the jackets sold out really fast. >> all the people, all of the acts have been really amazing. everybody saw phenomenal live, it's great to see so many people together. really happy. >> and there's a lot of love. >> reporter: new additions to the festival include beer lands featuring craft brewery and a culinary attraction. >> we did grilled corn with cotija wine, crumbled and a little bit of sausage with cilantro. food has come a long way and people really they identify with quality people who are walking around here are spending a lot of money on their ticket and they deserve great food. >> this is my second year. it's been really fun. organizers tell us over the last four years this festival has brought in $60 million to the local economy. live, cara liu.

san jose jazz summer fest wrapped up about an hour ago after three days of jazz, blues, salsa and latin tunes. there were more than 1,000 musicians on ten stages at various downtown locations. organizers expected more than 100,000 people. they haven't released final figures yet on the actual attendance. in election 2012 news tonight. a warm homecoming for paul ryan in wisconsin. thousands attended a rally for congressman ryan and mitt romney. ryan told the crowd that cheese runs in his veins and that by rejecting the recall of wisconsin major in june the state set an example for november. >> we want to elect men and women who run for office and tell us who they really are, what they really believe, what they're really going to do, and

developing news continues. news chopper 2 is live where more than 10,000 acres have burned and at least one structure destroyed in two major fires burning out of control there this evening. you can see the fire is still very much out of control. power is out in some areas in the clear lake area and phone service has been disrupted. want to point out that calfire is telling us one structure is confirmed destroyed but we are seeing video images earlier tonight that suggest there may be more than one home destroyed. no word yet on what sparks the fires but both were reported

around 4:00 this afternoon. a mandatory evacuation order is in effect for 150 homes. that affects 400 people and an evacuation center has been set up. very busy night in lake county. in north western iran, hospitals are struggling to handle the thousands injured from yesterday's twin earth quakes. tonight the death toll stands at 250 from the 6.4 and 6.3 quakes that hit. 20 villages were destroyed. in some remote villages officials are calling the situation dire saying no aid is reaching them and the need for medical help, shelter and clean water is great. from egypt a major shake up in the government as president morsi forces two top military chiefs into retirement and putting his own men in those positions. mr.morsi has been in a power struggle with the military since he took office in june.

in recent days he's moved aggressively to assert his authority over commanders. egyptian forces claimed they killed seven military forces. the killings come a week after gunman killed 16 egyptian soldiers on the gaza strip. billy graham has been hospitalized for what doctors believe is a case of bronchitis. doctors at the north carolina hospital say the 93-year-old graham is alert and in good spirits. this is graham's third hospital visit in about a year. he was treated twice for pneumonia last year. graham's doctor says no date has been set for his release. the associated press is reporting chad johnson the nfl player formally known as chad ochocinco. this comes after he had an

we want to get the latest on the wildfires burning out of control in lake county. our team coverage continues to continues -- continues with the weather conditions the firefighters are facing and matt keller is >> reporter: the elk lodge in clear lakes oath just south of highway 53 is the evacuation center. calfire says firefighters are battling a lot of fire in

triple digit temperatures all across california. >> it also plays a toll on firefighter safety and fatigue. knowing that these are some of these crews have gone from other fires from fire to fire and now are our fires. >> reporter: firefighters are doing firing evacweighs. that fire is 500 acres but calfire hopes to have it contained at 1,000 to 1,500 acres. it could grow through the night. all three fires are at zero containment tonight. i want to show you a live picture right now of a wild land fire engine from deer park is coming here to san helena to replace the fire engines that are now on the front lines of the clear lake fires and the y fire. these are here just in case a fire is needed for in this area to make sure that it's covered and the fire stations are covered. 400 to 500 firefighters are at the front line right now.

and calfire hopes to have at least three times that soon. >> thank you, matt. we turn now to mark tamayo with a look at the fire conditions. always important to know what's going on with the weather. >> the numbers have been huge. you get a different perspective you get a live picture here. you get an idea of just how big these two fires are. as far as the weather conditions right now around the fire zone in general about 83 degrees. humidity right around 19%. the moisture levels have come up. wind speeds i've been looking at some of the tree branches but it's not a lot. as far as the forecast for tomorrow, they've been battling this fire for days. as we take this into the afternoon hours by 12:00, 94 degrees. humidity levels come down and once again another day of

triple digits degrees. winds out of southwest around 10 miles miles per hour. and humidity pretty dry about 10%. we're coming off a rainy season below average. it's been drying up within the last three months, temperatures exceeding 100 degrees in this area. so the terrain and hot temperatures big problem for today. it's going to be a big problem as we head into your monday. thank you, mark. our coverage continues online at ktvu.com. we've created a slide show of some of the viewer pictures of the fires burning in lake county. if you would like to send us a picture please e-mail it to us at photos at ktvu.com. there were dozens of firefighters in downtown san francisco but they weren't there for an emergency they were taking part in two high rise emergency drills inside a building on battery street. a fake three alarm fire was staged with the help of a smoke machine. and volunteers played the part of injured victims all of this to help firefighters train for the real thing. >> we find out how well our

plan actually works. and where we have room for improvement. -- >> even the building managers and employees took part. efforts to -- on august second, a contractor damaged a pipeline in almost the same spot where the bruno fire took place. construction stopped. schaub pipeline has agreed to use additional safety measures and san bruno officials will monitor the progress on a daily basis. the fire started around 8:30 last night at the bfi newby islands sanitary landfill. the smoke prompted a warning for people who live downwind of the dump to stay inside, shut

set up at clear oaks. firefighters are pulling in resources from across the state right now. firefighters say the hot temperatures are allowing the fires to spread more rapidly. in these live pictures you can see the fire is still very intense even at this hour of night. the fire is still burning, we can only imagine what's going to happen tomorrow morning when the sun comes up and it gets hotter. let's check in now with mark tamayo. of course the heat has been a big issue for the inland spots including up in lake tahoe. speaking of the shoreline right now you can pick up dense fog and regrouping right around pacifica and sausalito. some of that will push south as we head into the overnight hours. as far as temperatures from this afternoon we cooled off a little bit compared to

yesterday's high numbers but still upper numbers. san francisco and pacifica both cool only in the upper 50s to lower 60s. for tonight mostly clear skies, coastal fog, tomorrow cool coast, hot temperatures inland, approaching 100 degrees at least in the upper 90s. we do gradually begin to cool things off in the extended forecast. you will see that coming up in just a little bit. temperatures in the 50s to lower 60s. partly cloudy skies. a few high clouds will be moving in from the south and also coastal fogs once again from pacifica to daily city and half-moon bay. you can see some of the showers and thunderstorms developing from the south and east of the bay area. some lightning strikes keeping calfire busy down in southern california down toward southern california. that's to the east of san diego. high pressure is in command of our hot weather again. not much change from today about 95 to 100 degrees. as we do head into wednesday and thursday. we're going to have a little

bit of a stronger on shore breeze. as a result that will bring down temperatures. it's going to take a few days. here's our forecast model showing you once again. into the afternoon hours you will see more sunshine maybe a patch or two. fog near parts of the coastline. red contour linking up with the 90s in a few locations right around 100 degrees and that will be the case out toward the fire zone. some drifting smoke moving into sonoma county that could be a factor once again as we head into monday depending on the fire behavior. oakland mid-70s with high temperatures out toward antioch, brentwood and livermore. san francisco right around 66, patchy fog in the morning increasing sunshine into the afternoon hours with partly sunny skies. here's a look ahead. your five day forecast. we do cool things off for wednesday, thursday and friday. and with your weekend always in
