a sea of candles glow tonight as a community turns out to support the family and friends of a young man who's life was unexpectedly cut short. good evening i'm julie haener. >> and i'm frank somerville. at least a thousand people came together for a solemn memorial in lafayette to remember a man who died tubing while in sacramento. amber lee is live where it was evident that this young man has

touched a lot of people. >> reporter: brett olsen graduated from high school two years ago tonight a large crowd including family, friends and supporters gathered here to remember a young man who impressed those who knew him. >> we're here utterly grief stricken at the loss of my deer boy brett. >> reporter: the faces of more than 1,000 people who came to remember brett olsen. family and friends told us he majored in theater because he loved being around people and that the labor day outing with friends was yet another activity to be around others. >> i'm just shocked about this whole thing, how it played out. i know i was really positive. everybody was really positive about trying to find him. it just turned out for the worse. >> reporter: olsen's body was recovered sunday along the sacramento river near chico. he had been missing for one week. his family says they are grateful to social media to help search for olsen and the

whole turn out for his memorial. >> brett is here with us right now, grinning his brett grin, overwhelmed with joy. >> reporter: friends wore blue and white. some wore hawaii shirts, a symbol of brett's fun spirit. the family said they had hoped that he would be returned safely. but have found comfort in the community. >> we miss you greatly. >> reporter: friends said olsen had a way of making them feel special. his father described him as a tireless young man who had a

way of even in death bringing people together. >> and coming up, events to remember september 11th. how this event is helping bridge the gap between people of many faiths. students of a catholic high school are getting letters informing them of an alleged case of sexual abuse from decades ago. a 1968 graduate recently claimed that he was abused by a jesuit brother when he was a student. no charges were ever filed. but the jesuit's have called it a legitimate claim and are now sending letters to the students. the brother went on to teach and coach in carmichael in sacramento county. he was there from 1976 to 1987. that school is also sending out

letter. the jesuit say that he was removed from teaching students when a student identified improprieties. he is now living in close supervision at a jesuit home. and no word yet on a request for a suspended case on suspended sheriff mirkarimi. mirkarimi has asking a delay of the report. a delay would keep politics out of a final decision. some of whom are up for reelection. >> no one is going to make the case or sending this case to the board immediately before the election is not political. >> this is a public law office. we cannot make decisions on politics we have to argue the case based on the law. >> reporter: the chair of the

ethics commission indicated that a decision on the request for a delay will come soon. jobs aren't so easy to find these days but in one bay area community there's a hiring boom. jana katsuyama reports from liver mother -- livermore where a new outlet mall is creating jobs. >> reporter: hundreds came with resumes in hand. and the hope that four hours of visiting booths of prospective employers might pay off with a promise of a paycheck. >> there was a long line. it was a winding line but it moved pretty fast. >> passed our resume and just meet and greet. >> i'm hoping i will get a paying job. >> reporter: garrett has a lot counting on this fair.

when the mall opens in november. u.s. stock markets made gains today in anticipation of actions. the nasdaq was up a fraction of a point. the fed begins a two day meeting tomorrow and there could be word of a move to help the economy on thursday. in 10 minutes facebook ceo mark zuckerberg's first public comment since his company's ipo. what he's saying about facebook's stock which has lost half of its value. thunderstorms, lightning and record setting rains have combined to create big problems in las vegas. according to the national weather service the rainfall was the most for any september day since recordkeeping began back in 1939. in the hardest hit area, 2- inches of rain fell in an hour. the accumulation of rain flooded city streets stranding motorists and leaving cars swamped to their head lights. helicopters were called in to rescue stranded drivers and

thousands of crashes were reported. police say they received numerous 911 calls but there are no reports of any deaths or serious injuries in connection with the flooding. california highway patrol officer kenyon youngstrom is now credited helping save the lives of four people following his death. youngstrom's kidney and pan kre -- pancreas went to a 29-year- old female. another kidney went to another female, 52 who had been waiting for nine years. we're learning tonight what detectives seized from the home of christopher lacy. he's the home that police say killed officer youngstrom. according to details,

authorities removed a handgun, safety certificate, ammunition, three shooting targets, six computers and $1,600 in cash. a private memorial service for officer youngstrom is scheduled for thursday morning. people came out to remember the 11th anniversary of the september 11 attacks. this event at oak hill cemetery paid special tribute to those who were on board flight 93 when the passengers fought back and it went down in rout to the bay area. among those in attendance was the brother-in-law of jason doll. >> we mourn jason's loss every single day. and this becomes a national event, once or twice a year. but it is still such -- it's a huge loss to the entire family. and it's very personal still. >> reporter: the oak hill cemetery is home to a permanent

monument to 9/11 and those who died on flight 93. >> joseph deluca. patrick driscoll. >> the names of the 40 victims on board that flight were read at a ceremony in union city. family and friends placed flowers at the granite monument where the names of their loved ones were etched. the creator of this memorial says every detail is symbolic from the unfinished sides of the memorial to the tree that was planted with the soil of the crash site. the terrorism attacks left many with fear of people of different religion. the anniversary is now seen as an opportunity to bring people together and create better understanding. matt keller has the story. >> reporter: the program here

new at 10:00, drivers that use the san mateo bridge will have to find another way to get across the bridge next month. the bridge will be closed for up to two weekends for seismic retrofit work. ken wayne is live with what caltrans plans to do. >> reporter: caltrans says it hopes to have those seismic upgrades done in just one weekend of work on the san mateo bridge. but just in case, it's warning motorists to be prepared for the bridge to be closed two weekends next month. 16million vehicles a year cross the san mateo hayward bridge. caltrans says it will close the bridge the weekend of october 19th and possibly the following weekend to complete seismic upgrades. >> we're just trumping everything. we decided to have that second weekend ready. >> reporter: it's a $3 million project to remove some of the

deck of the east and westbound sections of the cosway near the base of the high raise. that will allow engineers to remove the ring. >> we are going to remove the hinge and putting down the new about 12 new sections of the bridge deck. >> reporter: workers will also replace a cracked portion of the a wish bone shaped beam. the crack was discovered two years ago and steel plates were added as a temporary fix. now caltrans wants to make a temporary fix and replace that beam. caltrans says once that work is done the san mateo bridge will have the seismic upgrades done. >> this is the biggest project we've done for a seismic retrofitting. >> reporter: commuters say they hope caltrans keeps to that schedule. >> if they're a little bit late is that going to mess you up?

>> yeah it would, i would have to go all way around and take an extra 45 minutes to get to work. >> reporter: caltrans says it will start using the freeway message signs at the end of the month about the upcoming closure. live in foster city, ken wayne, ktvu news. new information tonight on the robbery of a 7/11 store in milpitas that turned deadly. police released pictures of the three suspects today. this is the one suspect where you can see part of his face. the other two suspects have their faces covered. all three were carrying weapons. milpitas police say the three men robbed the store and shot and killed the night clerk muhammad sedegseda. 7/11 is offering a $10,000 reward for their arrest. the alameda county sheriff's department says the raiders game last night had the usual number of quote nub el

>> reporter: many see here see big growth more and more as facebook becomes available in smart phones. >> facebook ended the day up adding 62-cent. more than 3%, but at $19.43 a share the stock is stay way down. anticipation is building for the new iphone. apple has been getting ready for the announcement in san francisco. one analyst with j.p. morgan chase figures the sale of 8 million iphone 5s could actually boost the domestic product in the fourth quarter by a half a percentage point. google had a major announcement of its own today taking aim at its rival apple. google released its first ios you tube app. saying it will give iphone and i pod touch users the best mobile experience.

in lafayette a patriotic scene as people line the over pass to pay tribute on this september 11th. they held flags and waved to drivers that drove underneath. the brigade was made of boy scouts, blue stars, moms and dads and anyone who wanted to join in. they also held a flag folding ceremony and candlelight vigil. the pleasanton fire department hosted a bell

traps set in july and none since then. tonight was the deadline. an infestation of the oriental fruit fly may have caused a quarantine of fruit. it was an undercover operation targeting drug dealers in some of the city's most notorious neighborhoods. john sasaki tells us how operation safe schools is helping protect young children in san francisco from some of the hard core drug use they see every day on their way to school. >> reporter: there's always something happening at the corner of eddy and jones in san francisco. >> this is a crazy place to grow up. >> reporter: the principal of san francisco city academy says it's tough to be a child here even to be a kindergarten teachers. >> we incorporate the word drugs, they learn right off the bat what needles are. even condoms you name it. >> reporter: that's why san

francisco police held operation safe school. >> the last thing they want to see when they go outside is to walk down the street and be scared by some dopers or drug dealers. >> reporter: officers did undercover drug buys and arrested dealers paying close attention to areas within 1,000 feet of schools. >> they walk to school and they see there's people smoking crack, injecting heroin, selling heroin, selling crack it's something they grow up with. >> reporter: today we saw countless drug deals. it's hard to imagine that in two weeks police made 25 arrests. >> with a purpose to send a message that we want you to stay away from our school zones. we don't want you to target any of our kids. >> reporter: educators welcomed this effort. >> we're hitting head on issues that they face and glad that the police are taking part in cleaning up the streets for sure. >> reporter: oddly the school drug enhancement does not

include prescription drugs which is also a big problem here in the tenderloin. in nine minutes, a shift in strategy for one bay area police department. the admission that the city's chief is making about traffic enforcement. san francisco city college trustees are looking for help to deal with financial problems. city college is at risk of bankruptcy and could lose its accreditation. the board tonight reportedly asks for a special trustee to help oversee finances. it faces a march deadline that accredits colleges. city college has about 6,800 students. on the dockets of the uc regents is what will happen if the governor's tax initiative fails. a state department official

more than two dozen people who went to enjoy music at a cafe last night, they had a frightening evening instead. owners at the good valley's cafe on telegraph near 46th street tell us three armed robbers came into the cafe about 9:00 last night. the gunmen told the 25 to 30 people inside to get on the

floor and then they proceeded to rob the place. >> they took wallets and phones and everything. everything out of the till, everything out of the back. when someone has a gun, you're going to do what they ask. >> reporter: our crew has been told there has been a number of robberies and street thefts in that area recently. oakland police tell us they are increasing patrols in the north oakland area. in san rafael police are providing surveillance video in the hopes that someone will recognize a man who robbed a gas station last month. the surveillance video shows the man entering the shell station on fourth street and pointing a gun at the clerk and demanding the cash. he was wearing a red echo hooded shirt, black and white gloves and gray ski mask. the robbery happened on august 28th at 8:00 p.m. in news of the world tonight, in egypt protesters climbed the walls of the u.s. embassy and torn down the u.s.

black islamic flag. most are angry about a film that attacking the profit muhammad. it was made by an extreme anti muslim american. in libya, the u.s. says a state department officer was shot and killed in an attack on the consulate in bengazi. nighttime video shows security forces running around the consulate. a second american was shot in the hand and a large part of the consulate was burned. the u.s. state department condemned the attack. and in spain, hundreds of thousands of people rallied in barcelona today in a call for independence for the catalonian region. this is usually national day for catalonia. the people say they pay more than their fair share of federal taxes and may ask for a bail out from madrid. a glitch in the reservation system caused problems. passengers weren't able to book

a recent fatal crash and a dwindling number of traffic officer social security a subject of new criticism coming from within the walnut creek police department. the changes that have some officers frustrated. >> reporter: this is the one traffic stop we spotted in walnut creek today but we soon noticed the officer was from concord. long time resident kathleen dunn isn't surprised. >> i've never seen anybody pulled over for a traffic stop in the streets of walnut creek ever and i've lived here for 20 years. >> reporter: now the walnut creek police association says traffic stops are about to become even more rare. hours after this crash, the association voiced its frustration. of the four remaining traffic cops one is retiring at the epd of -- at the end of the week and the last two are being reassigned.

this basically means you will see little to no traffic enforcement any where in town. today walnut creek's police chief told us he's assigning resources to where they'll do the most good. >> the best way to prevent crime and to insure the safety of the community and the safety of the officers out on the field with patrols fully staffed in black and white police cars. >> reporter: at least some say they are satisfied with that solution for now. >> i feel comfortable, in fact, someone was talking about it just yesterday and they felt that walnut creek has good hands on police force. >> does it concern you that there aren't any officers specifically doing traffic enforcement? >> not really. >> reporter: the chief told me all of his officers do proactive police work which includes some traffic enforcement but he says the goal is to ultimately have four motorcycle officers back out here focusing on traffic duty. in walnut creek, eric rasmussen. san jose major chuck reed says he got his first traffic ticket in decade this morning.

his office tells ktvu the mayor was pulled over on his way to work. reed was sited for failing to use his turn signal properly. that is a $35 ticket but he could contest it. oakland mayor gene quan is under fire after a federal judge issued her a stern warning. major quan canvassed businesses today. but police want to know why she cancelled a hearing last month. >> you can explain why occupy oakland demonstration went so wrong. the police response to it. >> you feel like she's been ducking. >> yes. yes i do. >> i'm not ducking i'm just pretty busy. >> reporter: the judges warn mayor quan she will face charges if she missing a deposition planned for later on

the 40s -- 40s. it's chilly as you walk out the door. big flooding in vegas today we talked about it earlier in the newscast. monsoonal moisture is exploding out there. that moisture stays south of our area. we aren't going to see any of it which is great. there's no mechanism to push it forward. we've had a series of unstable masses coming over us through the summer. we have a nice little compression going on. it's not real shallow so we're not looking at a spare the air day. we're not looking at warnings but we are looking at warm to hot inland temperatures. 85, 90 degrees. it's kind of hot. it's september now. it's all relative. as you move through the bay area metro climates a nice looking day. we have good air quality. like i said not heinous fire conditions. we've got a nice cool coast.

and the neat thing tomorrow, that fog should pull away from the coast tomorrow afternoon. so you should see plenty of sunshine out there along the ocean beaches. here's the long range model. here's wednesday looking for tropical moisture. thursday fog kind of stays offshore. a few high clouds come in. let's go to friday, nothing. so if you're in the sierra nevada. you're worried about thunderstorms, you're worried about tropical thunderstorms it's not going to happen. the forecast for tomorrow for napa, 82, 89 in fairfield. these forecast highs where they should be for this time of year. 88 in livermore. 89 in brent brentwood. patchy fog along the coast but i think you're going to see plenty of clearing. folks will tell you september, october, november, it's about as good as it gets.
