around 6:00 this evening. >> reporter: this woman and her children appeared to be right here at this crosswalk. to make matters worse there are no street lights out here. check this out, this is what it looks like when we turn off our tv lights. these children's bikes were so new. the tags were still on them. pittsburg police say a hit-and- run driver plowed into a woman and her two kids crossing crest view drive in the crosswalk. emergency crews lifted win of the children while an ambulance took the other two persons. >> i'm so sad to hear about it but i'm really no surprised. >> reporter: they're going too fast. everybody needs to slow down a little bit. >> reporter: it's not clear how fast the driver in this case was going but others say this

isn't the first time there's been trouble here. >> they've had roll overs. they've had collisions, i mean they had one i would probably say about a few months ago they had a roll over. >> reporter: we still don't know the ages of the woman or her children. tonight we told the sergeant about her condition. he told us there will be no comment about that or anything else involving this case until tomorrow. eric rasmussen, ktvu channel 2 news. california attorney general camela harris filed suit against bp. the lawsuit claims bp has improperly inspected and maintained under ground fuel tanks at arco gas stations and also tampered with fuel leak sensors. alameda county inspectors led the investigation, the suit involves more than 780 gas stations in 37 counties around

seashore. today a judge denied a request to overturn that eviction and refused to allow the company to operate while the lawsuit is heard. ken salazar ordered the oyster farm to be evicted. on wall street today, stocks had their worse day of the year. the dow dropped 120 points. the nasdaq dropped 47. the markets were dropped down by political uncertainty. and boeing has asked the federal aviation administration for permission to test fly it's grounded dream liner. the seattle times report that boeing may start running those test flights early this week. the faa grounded the dream liner after lithium batteries caught fire. commercial flights are weeks if

new details tonight a woman at the wheel of a stolen car crashes and dies and it's all caught on surveillance video. ktvu's deborah villalon is in east oakland now where this noontime accident barely spared two innocent lives, -- deborah. >> reporter: this time opd gets an assist from some dramatic video. a camera is trained on this intersection at foothill and 36th. when look to the upper right as an suv careens out of control and into another car. seen even closer there's a pedestrian walking to that same corner. he's standing inches from the car when the car collides and steps back uninjured. >> that man was the luckiest man in oakland today. >> reporter: he ran from his store when it happened and found the driver of the jeep had been killed instantly crushed when it flipped on her.

moments later, the man ran into the store saying the suv had just been stolen from his driveway, several blocks away. >> he said he started running into the house to get something, when he comes back the truck was gone. >> reporter: police confirm the jeep was stolen and say the woman driving the red honda hit practically head on wasn't seriously hurt. >> she was knocked out. but she was good. she was taken to the hospital. >> reporter: the father and -- the family of the victim rushed to the store too and watched the surveillance video. a witness who tied the crash tied a balloon at the scene and

turned on a candle. the woman in the jeep had no identification on her so it's going to take a while to use fingerprints to find out who she was. a truck driver is recovering from chemical burns tonight following an acid leak at the conoco phillips. the driver was burned when he tried to unlatch the trailer door. a container cleaning cleaning acid had been punctured. we've been told that neighbors and near by businesses were never in any danger from fumes. the roads are a mine fill of potholes. neighbors say the city of oakland and pg & e crews have filled and repaired the black top but it's not enough. joseph hayman has lived in the neighborhood for seven years

and says he's replaced two tires. >> one is bad, and a lot of vehicles have problems with the tires, their alignment and it needs to be improved. >> reporter: the city of oakland holds the yearly pothole blitz repairing thousands of potholes. public works has not returned our calls. in the city of socal it wasn't potholes but vandalled that caused an enormous amount of damage in our vehicles. sheriff deputies are working with the california highway patrol. investigators say a person threw something on to highway 1 around 5:15 a.m. striking a car window and causing a crash. san jose police late today released a sketch of a man who they say savagely beat a 70- year-old woman during a home invasion last week. he was described as latino man with a thin build and light

complexion. investigators also released new details about the attack which happened just before 2:00 a.m. last friday on mahonec drive in east san jose. police say the suspect and an accomplice terrorized the suspect and a woman and ransacked the home. a six day stand off in alabama came to a dramatic end today with the death of a violent survivalist who was holding a 5-year-old hostage. today that 5-year-old is said to be doing well, joking, laughing and eating. >> reporter: just two days before his sixth birthday, agents rescue a little boy from his captor ending a hostage situation that had drug out for six days. fbi agents storm the alleged gunman's bunker this afternoon. >> within the past 24 hours

negotiations deteriorated and mr. dikes was observed holding a gun. at this point, authorities fearing the health of the child, entered the bunker. the little boy is said to be doing fine, the suspect is deceased. >> reporter: the little boy was taken to the hospital. >> it's by the grace of god you know he's okay. >> reporter: it remains unclear at this point how the gunman jimmy lee dykes died. bomb technicians are looking at his property. the 65-year-old allegedly shot and killed a school bus driver before kidnapping the child last tuesday. it was a day before dykes was scheduled to appear in court. some neighbors say the vietnam era neighbor patrolled his house at night with a gun.

the bus driver has been hailed as a hero to protect about 20 other children on the bus. >> reporter: it is say that the suspect had a story to tell, it is unclear if that story will ever be revealed. friends of a girl who's podty was found dead returned to school today. grief counselors were on hand. police have not released her name but say they have made progress. >> what happened had nothing to do with the school. any school property or any school related activities. >> a memorial at the crime scene continues to grow. and a cousin of the victim says a candlelight vigil will be held at the scene on friday. oracle's cup contender is back on the water.

hospitalized tonight in maryland after they were hurt while fighting this four alarm fire at a lumber company. the firefighters were trying to put out the fire when the building collapsed trapping the four firefighters. tonight they are in stable condition and are expected to survive but the fire is still burning at this hour and no word on what caused it. authorities have now lowered the death toll from eight to seven with at least 17 others still hospitalized. passengers say they were headed down a mountain road when the bus suddenly sped up and the driver shouted to call 911 because the brakes had failed. the bus rear ended a vehicle.

as ktvu's allie rasmuss tells us, a woman killed her mother. >> reporter: neighbors say what happened here is a story of a mother who refused to give up on her daughter. >> it's a sad, sad thing. >> reporter: 59-year-old nancy franzel lived here with her 28- year-old daughter julia. >> we know she has mental health issues. >> reporter: just after 8:00 this morning, julia went to a neighbor's house to report someone had died. >> there was blood on her hands and her clothing. they went inside and found her mother nancy deceased inside the residence. >> reporter: julia franzen was arrested for murder. >> she was stabbed multiple times and it occurred in multiple rooms of the

second fire there today. firefighters were called out to the bliss bar on castro street around 8:30 this evening when they arrived they found smoke coming from the building. this evening's fire came about seven hours after a one alarm fire damaged the first floor bar. firefighters at the scene say it appears hot spots from that first fire rekindled sparking tonight's fire. public records show superdome officials were worried about a power outage several months before the super bowl. the cause of last night's power outage is still under investigation. but a check showed decay. this morning the nfl said the outage does not hurt new orleans charges to host super bowls in the future. super bowl viewers lit up twitter in the moments following that power outage. twitter says there were 24.1 million posts during last night's super bowl. some of those were from companies like oreo trying to capitalize on the black out telling people they could still dunk in the dark.

it turns out super bowl xxxvii did not break the record for tv viewer ship but boy it sure came close. last night's game became the third most watched program in u.s. history behind super bowls 46 and super bowl xliv. the neil company estimates 144 million people watched the game. baltimore was the most tuned in city but san francisco incredibly didn't even make the top 10. candle stick park long criticized for its out of the way location and chilly wind may soon become a bay area memory. as david stevenson reports the stick also holds some very dear memories and some people are now asking to have a piece of it. it's hosted everything from the beatles final show to the show that rocked the city. candle stick is to be

police in vallejo are investigating the city's first homicide of the year. officers say a shooting victim was found early this morning on a sidewalk near borges lane and evelyn circle in vallejo. the man's name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. a deadly shooting at oakland's huge first friday event has organizers and even some community members questioning its future. police have arrested one man for the killing of 18-year-old kiante campbell and the shooting of three others last friday but they aren't releasing the suspect's name at this time. now, organizers are concerned that the event has grown from an evening of art to an out of hand block party. >> you cannot say that it is not a block party because it

has become that. and that is something that we were careful to stay away from in the early days. >> reporter: first friday draws thousands of people to art galleries and other attractions in the downtown and uptown areas of oakland. police say they'll have an even higher profile at the next first friday in march. police in livermore say two people have been arrested in connection with a rash of home burglaries. the common link among theft victims seems to be a list of newspaper subscribers on vacation as paul chambers reports it was an item found in a stolen car that gave police the break in the case. residents in this walnut creek communitity say there's been at least 10 burglaries of home in the area recently. they think some of the victims are on the contra costa time vacation list. residents are being kept in the

loop on the crimes by video. >> we have an alert. we set the alarm when it's just basic stuff to go run errands and stuff like that. >> reporter: police found that two suspects came to liver -- livermore in a stolen vehicle. >> the next day they came into the police department and gave us items that didn't belong to them that they found in their car. and that's where that list of vacation stops was found. >> reporter: we do know that the contra costa times are doing their own internal investigation and have changed how they do the vacation hold list. it's still unclear if the two other men arrested are connected to the burglary.

news. giant's pitcher sergio romo is off the hook following a dispute at the las vegas airport. clark county officials said today prosecutors have decided not to file charges against romo. romo later apologized for the incident. tomorrow the california supreme court is scheduled to hear a case that could affect the future of medical marijuana dispensaries all across the state. at issue is whether local governments can ban retail pot dispensaries within their borders. supporters of medical marijuana claim state law allows local governments to set limits on dispensaries but not to outlaw them. because federal law prohibits the sale of marijuana and the state allows it, local governments are caught right in the middle. the battle over a 7/11 store is headed to court. the convenience store chain and the owner of the property filed

a petition to try to keep that store on north san mateo drive open. some residents have protested against the store. the 7/11 had replaced an italian deli that was grandfathered in at that neighborhood. the international house of pancakes is serving pancakes for free tomorrow as part of a nationwide fundraiser. patrons are encouraged to donate to a network of children's hospitals and other local charities. this is the fifth year of this fundraiser. i hop hopes to raise $3 million tomorrow. this week is going to be about more clouds, cooler temperatures or lower temperatures and a chance of showers as we get into tuesday. it kind of rolls through here
