today. jason wawernan. police in placerville says that he tried to steal a toddler right out of his mother's arms. we have live team coverage tonight. eric rasmussen asked the sheriff about a possible link here. we begin with ken wayne and tonight's emotional outpouring for leila and her family. ken-- >> reporter: frank here at jenny lind elementary school there was no mention of that arrest in placerville. everyone here was just here to remember an 8-year-old girl. the evening started with people by the dozens tieing purple and pink ribbons leila's favorite colors to a fence.

this man lost his child to a car accident. >> to this day it's a roller coaster. >> you never get over it? >> no it's 24/7. >> reporter: dozens of people gathered to pray and remember the smiling girl with glasses. >> as a teacher i have had students that will always be special to me, but please know that for me, leila will never be forgotten, she will be carried in my heart forever. >> reporter: the school principal said leila's senseless death has revealed the true character of calaveras county. >> i have heard so many kind words being spoken about the compassion shown by our students. compassion and kindness is what leila was all about. >> reporter: a moment of silence and a brief piece of

leila's favorite song. leila's family had some final words. >> i am not saying goodbye to leila, i'm going to say i'll see you later. there's no goodbyes. >> i just want to thank the entire county and family and friends for the overwhelming amount of support you've given to our family. and you will never be forgotten, thank you. >> reporter: there are only about 2,500 people who live in valley spring here in calaveras county. and tonight it looked like at least half the town turned out to remember leila. live in calaveras county, ken wayne. now to that bizarre crime in placerville and the attempted kidnapping that happened there is connected to

leila's kidnapper. eric rasmussen is live and asked the sheriff about the connection. >> reporter: tonight a sergeant told me the similarities between the two cases are at least raising eyebrows. a complete stranger broke into a family's home and grabbed the woman's child before the mother fought back. police say they've already taken a dna sample from 42-year- old jason rirenan to see if he has any connection to the killing of leila fowler. patricia patrino says he grabbed into her home and grabbed her 15 -month-old baby. police say she fought off the intruder and got her child back. while a family members called 911 from another room. >> that the devil told him to kill the baby. >> we're definitely going to look into it. >> reporter: tonight sheriffs have not said whether detectives have shown this

rville could have been linked to a daring kidnapping in pittsburg last week. it was early afternoon when the man grabbed the toddler from the front yard, the mother gave chase and got her toddler back. >> not hesitate to call us. that's what we're here for to help. the sooner you call us the sooner we can respond. and don't hesitate, immigration status means nothing to us. >> he is described as white in his 30s about 5'9" tall. a weather alert now. a red flag fire warning in the bay area tonight. this is a live picture of flags in the wind from san francisco.

the wind gusts combined with high temperatures are fueling an early start to fire season. bill martin is tracking the winds and says we can expect strong gusts in the coming hours. >> between midnight and 4:00 in the morning we could southeast gusts at 50 miles per hour. that's how the red flag triggered. it's dry out there. we haven't had rain in a while. here is where the red flag warnings lie. in the east bay hills, they will have strong winds. there's a strong add advisory in the green area, those winds will start to increase. strong wind right now, fairfield's gusts have been over 40 miles per hour. we have wind right now at fairfield 26 miles per hour. vacaville 29 miles per hour. so the winds are picking up rapidly as we go into the evening hours. stronger winds late tonight and

badly known for fires. >> reporter: shortly before 5:30 this evening a suspicious fire broke out in an open space area next to a strip small. not far from where the band members live. it appears a homeless man camped in this area but don't know if he's potential for the fire. >> it's a little bit concerning because i live so close to a lot of dead grass. >> reporter: contra costa county is asking people to make a defense around their home. >> it's going to take longer for us to get here, we had little rain this year so we're expecting bigger fire. >> reporter: rocking some heavy metal music under the sun is fun but these young men are fully aware that when the temperature climbs so does fire danger. >> normally whenever we have a fire even remotely closed. you feel it throughout the entire valley. >> reporter: i checked in with

pg & e tonight a spokeswoman tells me crews are on stand by because of the high wind advisory. if need be, crews are ready to go into a wind storm warning, ready to respond to fires. amber lee, ktvu news. a lawn mower is being blamed for an afternoon grass fire. that fire broke out around 12:30. it grew to four alarms and burned a little more than 1 acre before firefighters had it under control. they think a resident using a mower near by hit a rock and that the sparks is what caused the fire. dozens of firefighters put out a two alarm fire, a house fire in san jose this evening. it started shortly after 5:00 tonight on garsas avenue. firefighters reached the scene within minutes, and flames had already spread to the roof.

the home is being remodeled so no one is living there. we have more information about a fire in hayward that killed a woman confined to her bed. a spark in an electrical outlet sparked the fire. the victim has been identified as vicki harding. her husband and a neighbor tried to rescue her but the flames were too much for them. hundreds of union members delivered a message to oakland mayor gene quan about her proposed budget. scau members rallied outside the union. the union is concerned that oakland plans to spend a large portion of the budget on police and safety. the chief negotiator told us the service employees will not accept more concessions. >> we're not looking to break the bank but we want a fair contract.

bender at a fast food restaurant could cast a man his life. police say an elderly man was critically injured not from the accident but in a fight with the other driver that followed. ktvu's jana katsuyama has the latest on the victim's condition and the suspect who got away. >> reporter: workers at the bay view district mcdonalds said theolder man often came in for a cup of coffee. today his gray toyota sits in a parking lot while he sits in the hospital with severe injuries. a cashier saw the senior lying on the ground. police say the victim was assaulted in the parking lot by a younger man. apparently over a traffic accident. >> the suspect was backing up and backing into the victim's vehicle. >> reporter: police say the suspect and victim got out of their cars there was an argument and the suspect punched the older man in the head. >> as a result of the fight he

a monster beverage. the district attorney wanted monster to reduce the quantity of their caffeine in their drinks. but monster filed a lawsuit against herr era. wall street posted another day of gains today. the dow finished up 21 points. the nasdaq was also up 21. investors responded to news that ibm is going to buy back more stock and raise its dividend. apple is selling $26 million in bond. this is the first time it has borrowed money in over 20 years. apple is taking advantage of low interest rates to raise money. it has much more than that about $100 billion in banks over seas but would have to pay taxes if it moved that money to the united states. apple shares rose today up

have contained one of the bombs. in boston, the remains of bombing suspect tamerlan tsarnaev is ready for release to his family. tsarnaev's widow has requested that his body go to his parents and not to her. also today we learned that investigators have discovered at least one fingerprint on the bomb debris. there's a new plan for plan b. coming up i'll tell you about look at 'em.

we are learning tonight the 50-year-old woman accused of slipping alcohol into drinks at starbucks is a chemist. she was arrested last night at her home in san jose. they contained a lethal quantity of rubbing alcohol. the incident happened yesterday afternoon at a starbucks. one woman who goes there often says she was shaken to learn what happened there. >> i get orange juice, i get a lot of things. i come here a lot. and so it was, a little unnerving. >> reporter: the suspect was booked on charges of poisoning as well as attempted murder. tonight women's health groups here in the bay area are praising an announcement late tonight by the fda about the morning after pill. ktvu's heather holmes tells us the government approved making that pill available to younger

women now without a prescription. >> reporter: that's right frank, so soon you'll be able to walk into a pharmacy and you will find plan b right there on the shelf not locked behind the counter. as long as you're able to prove you're at least 15 or older you'll be able to buy it. no prescription, no pharmacist consultation requiredded. the decision today by the fda makes the plan b pill available over the counter for women 15 and older. >> we think it's an important step. >> reporter: heather estes is applauding the move tells me it will eliminate some of the biggest barriers women face in getting contraceptive. but estes is disappointed that the pill is not being made available to all women of every game. >> it's good that it will now be on the counter. but the fact that some women will be have to be carded is unfortunate. >> reporter: the pill package will be labeled that proof of

age is needed to be purchased. the pill is used to help prevent pregnancy and was available without a prescription only for those 17 and older. but the fda said today that the data it reviewed showed women 15 years and older were able to understand how plan b works, how to use it properly and that it does not prevent the transmission of sexually transmitted disease. >> it should probably be available for women 18 and older. >> reporter: at the campus of berkeley, it caused concern that it is going to encourage

-- during a wide ranging press conference, the president noted congress has blocked him from closing guantanamo bay and blocked him from moving the detainees to a prison in illinois. >> guantanamo is not necessary to keep america safe. it is expensive, it is inefficient. it is a recruitment tool for extremists. it needs to be closed. >> reporter: currently some 100 of the 166 detainees are taking part in a hunger strike. human rights groups have criticized the u.s. for force feeding at least 20 of those striking detainees. the president today defended that action saying he didn't want any inmates to die of starvation. looking back at the start of the second term, president obama had mitted his administration failed to get gun controlled passed but he spoke about the bipartisan efforts to get comprehensive immigration reform through

a 7-year-old girl is hospitalized with life threatening injuries after falling out of a three story building. they said she leaned against the screen and fell out. emergency crews say she was rushed to the hospital and is in critical condition. those who have felt the pain of violence created a memorial this afternoon to those kill in the streets of oakland. members of youth uprising held a moment of silence not far from where there have been several shootings in recent weeks. the young people then attached yellow and purple ribbons to

the fence. each ribbon holds a message to someone killed on their names. the ribbons are a reminder that every ribbon is a son or loved one. 30-year-old jeffrey boise is being held without bail. he carjacked a man and then tried to carjack a woman. but when he threatened the woman with the gun, she tried to talk to him. >> i tried to connect with him so he wouldn't feel like he was the lone ranger. >> reporter: she was able to get someone's attention to call for help during her 15 minute conversation with boise but he ran when he heard the sirens. police tried to break into a

home where officers arrested him. boise had 200 rounds of ammunition in the car. boyce told the woman that he had already killed somebody and now police want to question him about a woman that was found dead on sunday. the video looks like it came from a dashboard camera. the 747 was flying military material. it's possible the cargo shifted causing that crash. in bengladesh hundreds of people are still missing and are now feared dead in the collapse of a garment factory. today the court ordered the government to immediately confiscate property and use the

valley. no one has ever been arrested in the death of the 14-year-old who loved playing the viola. detectives for the alameda sheriff's department tell us they are watching the calaveras case from a distance. but if there is an arrest they'll take a closer look. >> i would think it would be very far removed if there's a connection between the cases. but who knows. >> reporter: lin says says he doesn't need the calaveras case to remind him what happened in his own home, that the pain has never gone away. he says he hasn't tried to call the fowler family, but his heart aches for what they are going through. >> it's going to be very painful. it's very hard to cope and to live with it. >> reporter: lin says his family has tried to stay positive and productive by organizing a contest where east bay students create projects about child safety. and they've established a youth

summer music camp in lin's memory. a new poll released 20% of college graduates are under employed or need more taping to get on track. a consulting firm surveyed more than 2,000 people who either graduated within the past two years or will receive a degree this year. 68% are working full time but 41% of graduates say they're in a job that doesn't require a degree. and 42% of recent graduates expect they'll need an advanced degree to further their career. tracking the strong winds right now. of course the red flag warnings in effect. very strong winds coming in around sonoma.

most of these reports are in connection. the wind advisory in brown. vallejo you've had wind gusts as well in evening. the winds are really just ramping up now. the strongest winds are showing up out here in the central valley or out toward in the antioch and sacramento area. look how warm it is here. see that 75, 74. that's down sloping winds. that lets you know that's the area where the winds are really starting to pick up. the fact it's that warm out there. the winds will ramp up throughout the evening hours. we're going to have a period of really significant winds between about midnight tonight about 4:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. so the winds really a story. look for the winds to be there in the morning and taper off in the afternoon. the extended forecast is going to be warmer around here. hotter in some places. we could see mid- to upper 90s. look for the oranges, those are 80s. the reds are 90s. so we're starting to see a few more 90s. this is the forecast for
