wildfire in ventura county fueled by santa ana fueled winds. a number of rvs in a parking lot were detroyed. this fire has burned 1,400 acres. at this point it is only 10% contained. and 500 miles north in rural bute county another wildfire exploded today. the panther fire is about 8 miles from butte meadows. calfires says it started at 4:00, tonight it has now grown to 10,000 acres. and this fire is also only 10% contained. here in the bay area we saw some of our highest temperatures of the year today. san francisco set a record for this date of 88 degrees. downtown oakland also set a record at 90. mountain view tied a record of 91. in the north bay that 125-acre

fire burning northwest of catastoga is -- the gusty winds that fueled it yesterday diminished today. no houses were lost. the fire burned 200 grapevines owned by kendall jackson. the other fires that were burning in wine country have been fully contained, crews continue to monitor those areas do make sure there are no flair upless. amber lee is live in contra costa county where smoke from those fires has prompted a health concern, amber. >> reporter: the warning signs are up, it reads over there fire danger today high. and you can tell that over here that the vegetation is dry. people are telling us they are enjoying the hot weather but that it has also brought problems. it was a golden sunset tonight through the haze at mount diablo. >> the air seems real stagnant,

real stale. >> reporter: contra costa county urged people to stay indoors. >> i work with little kids and a lot of them are having problems with sneezing and coughing. >> reporter: firefighters moved quickly to put out a grass fire just off a biking-hiking trial. >> it hasn't been this dry since 2012. >> reporter: after suffering a seizure that may be heat related, the boy was transported to the hospital. the mother of these little ones says she waited until 4:00 this afternoon before bringing her children outdoors. >> we stay hydrated and we also don't go out in the middle of the day. we just avoid that midday sun. firefighters say they can't repeat this warning enough because the vegetation is dry.

southern california in 11 minutes, we'll go live for a firsthand report. in the high sierra, there was very little snow. in echo county, you see there state county resources official found a dry field. there was a bit of snow though in the distance. out of all of the sight checked. the snow pack registered a meager 17% of normal. officials note that reservoirs do have water and they are not ready yet to call it a drought. there is new information tonight from calaveras county about the search for the killer of an 8-year-old boy leyla fowler. investigators reveal that three potential leads have fallen through. ktvu's jana katsuyama is live now in the town of valley springs with more on what we learned at that briefing. jana. >> reporter: julie, let me just tell you that right now they have taken down the roadblocks

here on ripin road near her house. sheriff deputies are still here treating leila fowler's house as a crime scene. the yellow crime tape is still up as sheriff deputies keep watch tonight. >> reporter: today investigators were out continuing to search the home of 8-year-old leila fowler for clues. it's been five days since the valley springs girl was stabbed and killed in her own house. deputies reveal they are analyzing knives found inside leila's home. >> we have collected several fives -- knives from the house. we are still examining whether those were the weapons used in the crime. >> reporter: investigators are still interviewing her brother. tonight police say another witness who gave a similar description has now recanted her statements. refused to help a sketch artist

police are on alert for a missing 7-year-old boy who is considered to be in danger. san francisco police say steven bernard was taken by his mother who does not have legal custody of him. the boy was wearing a black jacket with lime green stripes a white polo shirt and white pants. police say the mother, 43-year- old janel wilson showed up at school and took steven. they may be headed to oakland. ktvu's matt keller is live at that plant it's on east alma where the smoke and flames attracted quite a bit of attention tonight. matt. >> reporter: firefighters told me in just the past five hours that the fire is now officially under control. to give you an idea of where we're at. this is spartan stadium. the fire started at 6:00 tonight, firefighters are still here making sure they get it

completely out. the tightly bound recycled paper were piled high in san jose. but as you can see by this picture, the flames were even higher. >> as we were driving in we saw a wall of flames. looked like all the papers were 18 feet high of flames. >> reporter: the recycling plant was -- if people didn't see the flames, they saw and smelled the smoke. >> first i saw a smoke, i knew there was a big fire coming over the skate stadium here. >> basically just a lot of smoke. >> reporter: this fire required a lot of manual labor for hours as firefighters dealt with hot temperatures and wore breathing apparatuses on their backs to help them deal with the smoky conditions while carrying an additional 50 to 20 pounds of

concern this was murder by cop. >> it is a real possibility. we're investigating the case. >> reporter: eric rasmussen. the woman arrested in the orange juice poisoning case walked out of jail. they released her because they needed more time to decide if she will be charged. police arrested the 50-year-old chemist on monday. investigators say she switched two bottles of orange juice with a two bottles of orange juice containing a lethal amount of alcohol. they are waiting to complete studies before filing any charges. it turned out the fourth of july was the target date for the marathon bombings. the dates were moved up because the brothers were able to build

the bombs faster than expected. they also considered suicide attacks. all of this information reportedly came from dzhokhar tsarnaev during his initial questioning. the family of tamerlan has claimed his body from the medical examiner and taken it to a funeral home. no word yet about funeral arrangements. earlier this week the medical examiner determined his cause of death but that won't be released until the funeral home files a death certificate. san francisco police are working on a dramatic new security plan for the upcoming beta breakers race. deputy police chief john loftus laid out the plan at an afternoon hearing. that hearing was actually scheduled immediately after the marathon bombings. new security measures include police saturation of numi operations, and use of portable

security cameras along the marathon rout. the four steel columns that make up the steel column sit on a three story cradle just above the water. this cradle is designed to hold the water in place in a major earthquake. the defective wells hold the wells together running from top to bottom. caltrans says it found the cracks late last year and half of the repairs are now done. the cracks are said to be less than the width of a strand of hair and should be fine. crews have been battling a gas fire that has now exploded up to 8,000 acres and forced hundreds of evacuations. james koeh is live with the latest on efforts to bring it under control, james. >> reporter: no doubt when you talk about that fire exploding

around rush hour. please kind in mind the embers of it got going about 6:00 in the morning and it just kind of built up, built up. that's really when the flames started to catch a lot of the wind. rushing toward a lot of these homes. i want to give you a sense of the current conditions. very, very dry, but the temperatures have cooled down quite a bit. here's the important part. not a whole heck of a lot of wind. it's very, very still right now here in this neighborhood in new berry park. that wasn't the case earlier this afternoon. we caught up with homeowners who saw fire rushing toward their homes. >> this is kind of surreal. just sat back and watched it happen. >> reporter: the embers still flowing. but earlier today. >> we haven't seen a fire like this in 15 years. 20 years. panicked. complete panic. >> reporter: a new experience for most but for one homeowner this was all too familiar. >> 35 years in this home, this is all deja vu for you.

>> yes, in 1981 we had a fire not, i was going to say in some ways it was worse. it was so intense and so hot and then after we snapped this picture this entire tree went up which is this tree right here. >> reporter: she was one of the many homeowners that saw the flames that raced toward their home. >> the heat was pretty intense. we were still a good 100 feet away from the homes. it started getting hot, we started backing up. >> it was intense not knowing where the fire was going to go. >> reporter: no injuries whatsoever to report. no property lost in this area of newberry park. i did want to mention one casualty. remember that tree in that story, hey listen, as the sun was setting, the tree did catch on fire. and it went ablaze.

been charged with unemployment. b.a.r. t. fired peroni for enraging the fight in the oscar grant case. his case has been postponed until last year when he's scheduled to return home from afghanistan. richmond police told the contra costa times that there have been 18 robberies near the b.a.r.t. station compare that to 13 during the same period last year. b.a.r.t. police also report that crime is up within station boundaries. there were 53 thefts and robberies last year compared to 43 the year before. those statistics include the death of a man back on march 14th. he was shot and killed near the entrance to the richmond station. still no arrests in that case.

and law enforcement. state law prevents the gun dealers from selling those weapons but peace officers and members of the military are exempt from that law and can sell the weapons to others. the new law would forbid that. the sale now moves to the state senate. a bill that would allow parents to remove personal information from the children's social networking accounts was passed in the state senate today. it would require sites to remove information including phone numbers, social security numbers and credit card numbers of children under the age of 18 if their parents request it. facebook and google were among those opposing the bill saying there's no easy way to verify if the request is legitimate. that bill now moves to the state assembly. in tonight's special report. an oakland motel and one time

ventura county. more developing news in oakland firefighters are on the scene right now of a one alarm fire. it broke out around 10:00 on the block of 65th avenue in east oakland. it was confined to the back of the house. the owners were at home at the time and are being interviewed by investigators about the cause. one owner suffered a burn to the house while trying to keep the fire from burning his own house. >> reporter: officials said they found toxic items in 10 brands of popular lipsticks. researchers say there still could be a long term health impact. that's because many women apply lipstick several times a day and wound up swallowing the product throughout the day. there are currently no standards in the u.s. about the contents of the metals. go to ktvu.com and scroll down
