somerville. >> and i'm julie haener. we will get to the super bowl announcement in just a moment. first the disaster in oklahoma. authorities reduced the death toll to 24 accrediting the discrepancy to confusion yesterday. and the weather center upgraded the storm to an ef5. we have live team coverage tonight. ktvu's heather holmes but we begin on the ground in moore oklahoma with nicole collins and the latest on the situation there. nicole. >> reporter: while search and rescue has diagnose down here in moore, oklahoma. police helicopters are still out at this hour searching

using infrared technology searching for those who may still be trapped under the rubble. >> reporter: 22 square miles of rubble and devastation in moore oklahoma. all this damage done by the most powerful tornado there is according to government weather experts. president obama has declared a major disaster clearing the way for federal aid. >> we're a nation that stands with our fellow citizens as long as it takes. we've seen that spirit in joplin, in tooscaloosa, in breezy point. that's what the people of oklahoma are going to need from us right now. >> reporter: the tornado was on the ground for nearly an hour monday. winds peaked as high as 210 miles per hour as the ef5 twister cut through a dense suburban landscape. rescue teams continued to sift through the ruffle, double and tripping checking to make sure nobody is buried underneath. in the aftermath, parents are talking about teachers who used

their bodies to protect them from the degree. reporting live from moore, oklahoma. the tornado touched down and was on the ground for 50 minutes destroying everything in its reach. the school was almost ending when the storm started its path. >> we're getting a look at the storm. that's actually a day care center. tonight a grandfather tell us it is really a miracle that those inside survived.

>> 3-year-old grayson was playful and smiling despite being in the hospital. he suffered a head injury and lacerations during yesterday's storms. the monstrous tornado headed straight for graces' day care where his 3-year-old sister was also being cared for. >> you cannot look at it and not be scared. >> those three hours that i didn't hear anything, it was the longest three hours of my life. knowing i would never see them again. >> reporter: staff covered the children's bodies bodies.

other survivors talked today about huddling in bathtubs and closets as the twister battered their neighborhood. >> so we grabbed the motorcycle helmets and hid in the closet and prayed like hell and luckily the only reason we were spared is the room we were in. >> reporter: those who took cover in underground storm shelters emerged to see the damage from the ferocious winds house after house gone. >> i was hanging on for dear life. i didn't think we were going to make it. the walls were shaking in the closet. i really didn't think we were going to make it. >> reporter: but they did make it and along with several schools that were damaged the medical center there in moore was also háef shreu damaged you're looking at pictures now of it. we learned tonight that a woman actually went into labor here at this medical center when the storm hit. i'm happy to report that both mom and baby are doing fine tonight. i'm heather holmes, ktvu news. a man from martinez says he has overwhelmed with emotional

after learning that his sister lost her home. >> here's the living room, here's the kitchen. >> reporter: lucido sent this video to her family after texting them to say she was alive. her brother says most of what katrina and her family owned is now gone. >> i feel helpless. i want to do something i told her if i have to go to oklahoma and build her a house, brick by brick i would do that. >> reporter: yet from out of the rubble katrina found a sign that once hung in her house. it reads simply life is good. it's a message that the family says is giving them inspiration. >> it appears that deadly twister was the most powerful type of tornado packing winds greater than 200 miles per hour. today ktvu's john fowler went to a morgan hill wind tunnel to get a sense of that much power. >> this is about 55 miles per

awarded to san francisco. >> it was all cheers for the bay area contingent. they gave all the owners mini i pads with the bids for the super bowl. it will also be played at the new levy stadium that is currently being built in santa clara. the super bowl is yet another big achievement for the people that first persuaded the 49ers to locate their headquarters. more recently they convinced voters to build a new stadium there. as robert handa tells us, for them today's decision was an emotional one. >> reporter: santa clara major jamie matthews and other city leaders got a heros welcome for today's nfl super bowl announcement. they waited nervously with volunteers who helped get the measure passed to hear the words. >> super bowl l has been awarded to san francisco.

hotels, bars and restaurants to reap a big part of the hundreds of millions of the dollars generated by a super bowl. in santa clara, robert handa. levy stadium is quickly taking shape. here's some video of the construction site that we shot today. it has now been nearly 13 months since the project broke ground and now it's roughly 35% complete. the niners are scheduled to begin playing there next year in the 2013 season. cities hosting the super bowl tend to make a lot of money. during the 2013 super bowl in indianapolis, the metro area saw an estimated $325 million in league and fan spending. and this year's game in new orleans brought in an estimated $480 million to the city. meantime there's a wide range of estimates for super bowl l but most agree it should be a record number. in six minutes, 49ers president york on today's news.

and why super bowl 50 maybe the most philanthropic super bowl ever. it happened around 4:40 this afternoon on willow pass road. concord police say they were following a blue suv that was involved in a residential burglary when it hit a tacoma. the two innocent people in that toyota suffered moderate injuries. the driver of the blue suv was not hurt and was arrested at the scene. investigators in san jose say it appears someone mowing the lawn accidentally started a grass fire that briefly threatened homes this evening. the fire burned near highway 101 and yerba buena road tonight. you can see the flames racing up the slope toward homes in windy conditions. fire officials say the flames actually burned within 100 yards of a row of homes and grew to about an acre before firefighters were able to get

happening now, university of california medical workers are on strike at five hospitals around the state. it's a two day strike and ktvu's amber lee is live in uc san francisco to tell us how this walk out is affecting patient care. amber-- >> reporter: frank it's cold and windy out here but as you can see this picket line is still up. people are wearing heavy coats, scarves and carrying signs and chanting, they tell me they've been without a contract since last september. the workers are loud in their demand but say they've fallen

on deaf ears. >> they've increased the work load but not increased the workers. >> reporter: on strike, nursing aids and custodians. they tell me the uc medical center is under staffed. >> you want to be able to say, is there anything i can do before you leave. and not rush to the next patient. >> i thought gee, how am i going to get through all of that but they've made it easy for us to get access to the hospital. >> reporter: security escorted you? >> no they just stand there. >> we asked other visitors what it's like inside the hospital where some patients are being cared for by replacement workers. >> reporter: low is the care? >> the care is excellent. still getting great care. >> reporter: no difference from the strike today.

provide affordable loans. wells fargo also says it's foreclosure rate is nearly half the industry rate. five or six current former school official employees accused of stealing school funds pleaded not guilty in court today. one of the defendants did not enter a plea. prosecutors say the women diverted $16 million of public grant money to hidden slush fund accounts at several community based administrations. in all the women face 200 felony charges. all six defendants are due back in court in july. the senate judiciary community passed far reaching immigration reform with democrats and republicans. tonight's votes were 13 yes, five no. the bill now goes to the full senate where the outcome is uncertain. the bill would create a path to

i'm hoping that at some point he got out and he was injured and somebody will find him. the office was shut down today so that coworkers could take part in the search. his stepmother says they will not give up until he is found. an accident in sonoma county left one man dead and his truck mangled beyond recognition. this is what the truck looked like after it struck a tree at 10:15. the accident happened on highway 16. officers say even though the driver was wearing a seat belt he was thrown about 30 feet from the truck. the driver did not seem to be exceeding the speed limit. the labor dispute between at&t parkers and the concessionaire are heating up.

investigators in east san jose are still trying to figure out what caused a tree fire that spread to two homes. strong winds quickly carried embers to two neighborhood homes. it took more than an hour to put both house fires out. no one was hurt but both homes were badly damaged. we're told firefighters found downed wires in the area but they say it's not clear whether those wires caused the fire. advocates of workers rights rallied outside gap's annual shareholders metings --

received any reports of illness. the winery wanted to test the effect of ocean aging on the wine. tomorrow that wine will be sampled. the weather story today was the big cool down. the weather story tonight is how windy it is out there. we start with a cooldown. the temperatures really dropped as this low pressure center pulled in to the north of us. no rain for us but enough to stretch out that marine layer. get the winds going tonight and it's howling out there. we have winds in the san francisco airport right now sustained winds of near 40 miles per hour. we've had gusts up to 50 miles per hour. it is windy. getting reports of real wind in san bruno. it's breezy up north too as well. if you go up to the napa area we have 17-mile-per-hour winds. and the winds will continue throughout the evening. the cooling began because as that cool air pressure got close it stretched out the atmosphere. no fog. it's just a lot of cool moist air. that's why the fire danger is
