breaking news out of washington state where a portion of the bridge on interstate 5 collapsed into a river sending vehicles and people tumbling into the water. good evening i'm gasia mikaelian in for julie haener. >> and i'm frank somerville. a tremendous effort is going on right now. it happened about three hours ago at 7:00 tonight in mount

vernon. that's about 60 miles north of seattle. incredibly at this point it appears that no one died in this collapse. sheriff deputies were using rescue boats and jet skis to reach the collapsed portion of the bridge. so far three people have been plucked from the river and taken to hospitals. a large crowd gathered on the river watching the efforts, the rescue efforts unfold. we managed to spot at least three vehicles in the water. but it's still too early to say what caused that portion of the bridge to sheer off and chance. more details now on the skadgett river bridge. it's three lanes wide and 56 feet long. the american society of civil engineers gave the bridge a

grade of 90. there are more than 2,000 bridges deemed structurally de deficient here in california. caltrans says it faces a multi million shortfall on bridge repair and maintenance. we're going to continue to monitor the situation and we will bring you more developments as we get them. the we're hearing from the ohio company that made those steel bolts for the bay bridge that failed and the company is saying it's not our fault. 32 bolts fractured in march now ohio's dyson corporations is weighing in. caltrans commission that review

by three metal bolts. will the bridge opened as planned by labor day weekend? >> we're working on it now. it's a tough space. tough to work in. but we're trying to get a leg and starting to run on it. >> the repairs are needed to help the bridge with stand the major earthquake. we have more developing news tonight an earthquake that hit a little more than an hour ago and was felt along large parts of northern california. the quake measured 5.7 and was centered near greenville in plumas county. it hit at 8:47 this evening at least eight aftershocks followed in the two and three point range. the colors describe how people

describe the shaken. some 7,000 people reported to the u.s. geological service across about 1/3 of the state. it was felt strongly in chico and sacramento and on our facebook page ktvu viewers are saying they felt it in antioch, bethel island all the way to san francisco. so far there are no reports of significant damage or injuries. a significant change in policy for the boys scouts of america. the council has voted to allow gay boys to be scouts. jana katsuyama with more on why people on both sides are not happy with the decision. >> reporter: today's decision could mean that the mount diablo council means the boy scouts will be able to

crews responded to coyote creek about 2:45 yesterday. the fire burned about an acre and a half before crews managed to contain it. police closed down a section of brokauff road. a driver and passenger managed to walk away from this wreck. it happened a little after 3:00 this afternoon. the car veered and ended up like this leaning against a power pole. the crash caused a small fire which was put out. about 50 homes in the area lost power but it's expected to be restored at any time now. new at 10:00, we just learned whether b.a.r.t. is going to reverse a long- standing policy and make it easier for people to bring their bikes on the train. ktvu' debra villalon is live in oakland, the b.a.r.t. board of directors just voted moments ago what did they

we return now to that breaking news from washington state. where a portion of a bridge collapsed. this is a picture of the scagett bridge. three people were rescued from the water and taken to the hospital. but incredibly it appears nobody was killed. at this point it is not clear what caused the collapse of the bridge. we will continue to monitor the information. newly released numbers reveal a change in the number of teen pregnancies in america. fewer teens are becoming mothers especially among one group, maureen. >> reporter: the numbers are in this one report. it shows teen pregnancy did not drop a little it dropped significantly. three weeks ago this sleepy

baby girl was born. her mother was glad she was 31 and not 13. >> when i was a kid it was like a club. it was ridiculous. >> reporter: according to new numbers the teen birthrate has dropped dramatically in recent years from 42 births for 1,000 teens to 31 teens. marking a 31% drop. >> i think it's fantastic. i think everybody agrees that teenagers are not you know in the best position to be having babies. >> reporter: christine clark is the collective director of teen success which offers help to first time teenage mothers in the bay area and central valley. >> a lot of people myself included think the economy has a lot to do with it. we're actually seeing drops along all demographic groups including adults. i was surprised by how big the drop was. >> reporter: teen births among

latinas dropped 40% during the same period of time. >> we didn't expect such a large number. >> reporter: 45% of the patients here are latina. >> i think again this speaks to the fact that we're getting to places where this education hasn't been traditionally maybe lower income communities. >> reporter: this drop following a decade or so of decreasing teenage pregnancy and more birth control. but there's still 16,000 teenagers giving birth to babies each year in california. the latest census shows the south bay population is surging. san jose is among the nation's top 15 cities for growth. giving california three cities on the list. but texas has the most with five. also of note here the city of gilroy has topped the 50,000

population mark for the first time. new details tonight on those surprise inspections of limos and shuttles at san francisco and international airports. a number of enforcement agencies teamed up to inspect limos, taxis and shuttles. they wanted to make sure the owners were compliant. we have learned that inspectors have handed out 40 violations. ktvu's jade hernandez tells us we learned what happened in the moments both before and right after those officers were killed. >> reporter: sergeant butch baker and detective elizabeth butler showed up to this home at branson looking for jeremy guley. guley met the officers at his back door. he then opened it.

>> within three seconds guley fired five round at the officers. >> reporter: the two lay wounded but guley wouldn't finished. >> at that point, guley walked over to baker and fired two more round into him. then disarmed him, took his service weapon from him. >> reporter: guley fired a total of nine rounds some at point-blank range. officers discovered guleywas found later. >> guley was shooting multiple witnesses. four saw guley shooting with two weapons. >> after being shot at, four brave and courageous law enforcement officers walked through the gates of hell, discharged their firearms as

demonstrating the police force. the group left for southern california early this evening to meet with police in both san diego and los angeles. in oakland, cara liu. san francisco police are looking for a teenager with medical injuries. he had gone to visit a former teacher tuesday morning and spoke to his dad at 1:30 by cell phone. his family says they haven't seen or heard from him since. sean city is 5'5", 120 pounds and wears braces. wall street shows some resilience today closing only slightly lower. u.s. stocks dropped early but then rebounded. the dow industrials lost 12 points the nasdaq dropped three. an up expected slow down is what initially sent the stocks

for mental health treatments. the building was ultimately demolished. authorities have released surveillance video from a bank in santa rosa. three armed men wearing masks entered the credit union and ordered tellers and customers to the ground. the thieves then took cash and left. no one was hurt. the van used in the robbery was stolen in vallejo. in london police searched for evidence at the scene of a hacking death of a british soldier. the victim was identified as lee rigbey. he was married and the father of a 2-year-old boy. one of the suspects is being identified as a muslim convert. police arrested two other people on conspiracy charges. in afghanistan the national army held a graduation service for more than 1,200 soldiers. there are questions about the

contract talks have stalled. at issue are staffing levels, wages and changing to their pension plan. the internal revenue service supervisor who refused to testify has now been suspended. loise lenard invoked her fifth amendment right. she was asked to resign but refused. two other irs officials have lost their jobs due to the scandal. some 115,000 federal workers won't be going to work tomorrow because they have been furloughed. ktvu has learned this includes workers at the local office of the environmental protection agency. a vast majority of the 750 epa employees resigned in san francisco. they work on things like water and air programs. the furlough stands from the sequestration budget cuts that happened earlier this year. police in san francisco was trying to determine if anyone

was at fault when a garbage truck struck and hurt an officer. other cyclists say the intersection of south van nuys can be dangerous. >> reporter: the twisted bike and body of a cyclist were on the scene most of the morning. it was a disturbing scene for commuters and especially for jorge who saw it. >> the truck was on the green light and he turned right. >> reporter: marquez described hearing a thickening noise and saw the cyclist go down. he said the garbage truck driver didn't seem to notice. >> i think he didn't feel nothing, he's too heavy truck. >> the bicyclists hit the rear or some part of the rear of the garbage truck. the garbage truck driver did not realize there was a collision and continued. >> reporter: san francisco police say the driver returned to the scene when he heard

to find the pictures, go to hot topics. a sting operation has led to charges. reyes is accused of stealing. he appeared in court for his arrangement in redwood city today. they received 50 complaints from passengers about stolen items. so authorities decided to put gps tracking devices on decoy items and they tracked those items to reyes car as he drove home. he was then taken into custody. authorities also said they found more stolen items at his house. now to the disaster in oklahoma. severe weather slowed down the recovery effort in the city of moore. storms rolled through bringing hail, heavy winds, rain even flash flooding. a number of cars were trapped in rising flood waters. also today state officials increased the number of people injured in the tornado to 353. 24 other people were killed and

authorities say 12,000 homes were either damaged or destroyed. we've got a little bit of wind out there but nothing like we've seen the last few nights. temperatures have been on the mild side and they're going to stay that way because of this system right here. that system kind of opens the door for another system that wants to drop in. as we get into sunday into monday. we'll get to that on your computer model. but first we'll take a look at the current temperatures it's mile out there. overnight temperatures will get into the 40s. we're already in the low 50s. it's chill hi as you head out the door tomorrow morning. the forecast overnight low 43 in santa rosa, 43 in napa. you may find a 39 or 38 here in the napa valley some where but it's just like it was the last couple of mornings. a chilly start, then the day warms as it did today. that means daytime highs tomorrow. lots of 60s. mid- and upper 60s and low and

mid-70s. that's most of us. along the coast we'll be much lower. in the hottest spots the warmest spots maybe 77 degrees. 76degrees something like that. so there's the system i'm tracking. that system sort of migrates out of here. we get a nice little warm up as we get into saturday and sunday. a little warm up. a couple of degrees. then this is when the changes come. this low pressure starts to move in on sunday night. that brings us a chance of showers as we head into the memorial day. memorial day itself which is monday. the computer model is going to bear this out. here is saturday. you see the green on the map. the saturday is okay. sunday is not bad either. not that warm. but look at what teed up on the storm. here's your sunday system. brings it right up to the coast. brings it just north of the bay area and kind of wants to drag it through. what does that mean for us on monday.
