is live at the amusement park in vallejo. >> reporter: frank, this is the first full week of operations for six flags discovery kingdom. those mechanics are responsible for maintaining the rides here, including this giant roller coaster behind me. park visitors say it's the thrill of the roller coaster. >> the long drop. it makes you hold your breath as you're going down. >> reporter: and the family atmosphere that brings them here. they want the best for their families, and that means a fair contract from texas based six flags. these mechanics started organizing with the union last fall. they tell me that turnover is high, and hourly wages low. as for wages? >> i've gotten $1.30 total in

the three years i've been here. >> reporter: no overtime for working more than five consecutive days. >> it's rough, it's rough. >> reporter: romeo gonzalez was grateful to be hired here as a mechanic after being laid off. he says hospital bills for his son, who has leukemia, are mounting. i asked six flags who is maintaining all the rides. the company has brought in mechanics from other amusement parks, such as magic mountain. in a written statement, the company said the safety of our guests and employees is our highest priority. still, this couple who says they hold season passes has concerns. >> they've been here, they know what they're doing on the rides. they bring in someone new, they might not know exactly what they're doing on this

particular ride. >> reporter: another park visiter shows shows us these photos earlier this month, while he was stuck on a ride. the mechanics are asking the public not to patronize the park until this is settled. the mechanics tell me, they will be back on the picket line at 5:00 tomorrow morning. live in vallejo, amber lee, ktvu, channel 2 news. we have developing news from hayward, involving a hit and run crash that injured an 8- year-old boy. police say the 8-year-old was in the crosswalk when a car hit him. then took off. the boy has been taken to oakland's children's hospital, where the extent of his injuries can be determined. police say they have a lead on the car, based on the license plate number, and are now looking for that driver. also now to this afternoon's deadly officer

involved shooting in oakland. tonight, police wrapped up their on scene investigation. ktvu's heather holmes is live now at police headquarters, where officials tell her the man who was shot was armed with a stolen gun. >> reporter: julie investigators tell me that handgun was reported stolen out of georgia. now police still aren't saying if the man fired at officers, or pointed the weapon at them. >> more than five hours after gunfire erupted. police removed the yellow crime scene tape and opened busy bancroft avenue. it was here around 2:00 this afternoon, where a special crime reduction team identified a vehicle with three people inside at 90th avenue and plymouth street. investigators pursued the vehicle before it came to a stop and the trio got out and ran. >> one of our officers

increasing our academy. absolutely something must be done. >> reporter: this is oakland's first deadly officer involved shooting in more than a year. reporting live tonight in oakland, heather holmes, ktvu, channel 2 news. just a block away from that crime scene, a hip-hop artist is transforming what was once a crime plagued housing complex into a conception based piece. ice life led a brief tour of the place. he said it used to be a notorious site of drug dealing. he says growing up in oakland, he didn't see the poverty around him. instead, he saw beauty and love. >> i think that it's really important to retell this story of a place that was a notorious housing years ago, and we imagined it, and pulled out the life. >> city leaders say they see it as an opportunity for healing in oakland. the exhibit opens the last two weekends in june and is free to

the public. the california state senate passed bills and set it onto the assembly. the legislation is it a response to recent mass shootings. republicans argued against the bill, and say the real problem of mental instability is not being addressed. one measure would outlaw detachable, and large capacity magazines. another would require those who buy ammunition to get a permit, a background check and pay a fee. and another would change the definition of some shotguns and reclassify them as assault weapons. the 12-year-old boy from calaveras county accused of killing his 8-year-old sister was in court today, and pleaded not guilty to second degree murder. family members said nothing as they arrived at court for the closed hearing. the boy spoke only one thing, yes, when asked if he waived his right to a speedy trial. the 12-year-old is accused of stabbing his younger sister 21 times. the boy was the lone witness

and blamed the killing on an intruder. a coach appeared in court today on child sex abuse charges. he faces 16 counts, including 3 rape charges. edwards was a football coach at kennedy high in richmond. they're concerned there may be more who have not yet come forward. new at 10:00, wal-mart workers call for better treatment and more respect during a rally outside the san francisco home of yahoo's ceo marissa myer who is also on the wal-mart board of directors. this evening's rally kicks off a week ahead of wal-mart's annual share holding meeting next week. the group is calling its campaign, the ride of respect as it caravans to the meeting in bettenville, arkansas. where wal-mart has its headquarters, to demand a

better environment for workers, and better pay. >> you know she refuses to meet with us, so we're bringing it to her today. >> the group accuses wal-mart of retaliating against employees who speak out and are demanding that that practice be stopped as well. ed lee is making good on his promise to bring new business to the city's suffering mid-market area. he announced spotify has signed a lease. the music company is the 11th tech firm to move into the area since mayor lee took office. three other businesses also signed leases in that area. an art studio called apex, and clothing boutique, holy stitch are moving into 42 turk street. also plans for a phantom coast pub and brewery. and coming up, a biproduct about business boom.

the cuts to city services the mayor says he will roll back in his budget. stocks fell today. the dow fell 106 points. the same amount it rose yesterday. the nasdaq was down 21. analysts say investors are wary, and some think the market may be nearing the top. nasdaq is set to pay a $10 million penalty because of problems that disrupted facebook's initial public stock offering last may. the securities and exchange commission said computer glitches at nasdaq delayed the start of trading, and caused chaos. the $10 million penalty is the largest the sec has ever imposed against an exchange. the mother of a 12-year-old boy is speaking out for the first time after her son drowned in an east bay drainage canal over the holiday weekend. ktvu's mike mibach tells us about the change she hopes to see, so other parents won't

have to feel the same pain. >> reporter: a small alameda apartment, filled with emotion. as a mother mourns her son. >> his presence. he didn't have to say anything. >> reporter: this is tisha caldwell, and this is her 12- year-old son. >> i am so sorry it took this to realize how much i love you. >> reporter: on saturday, caldwell says her son died after falling into the contra costa canal after playing with a relative. >> why wouldn't that fence be more upright? >> reporter: contra costa operates the canal. the water way is where two people have drowned in just the past two weeks. where he drowned, he said the fence stands at 5 feet tall. >> our sympathies go out to the family. the fence is just one of

expected on july 10. ken wayne is live on treasure island after going out on the span tonight. >> reporter: caltrans took us straight to the heart of the problem here on the new eastern span of the bay bridge. a lot of progress has been made to overcome those faulty bolts. but the bridge's opening date is still in doubt. we climbed underneath the deck of the new suspension span to see those troublesome bolts that have caused so much concern. the broken bolts are clearly evident by exposed gaps, and in some cases, the nuts are gone. >> a little frustration, anger at this ohio company that made these bolts? >> >> i don't know. we're just focusing on dealing with the issue. you can go crazy thinking about stuff like that. i think our job is to make it work, to make it safe, and to get the bridge open. >> reporter: these gouges in the concrete are where a new steel saddle will be installed. the saddle is designed to secure the bridge deck to the

supporting structure underneath. caltrans says this modification will be just as effective as the original bolt design. >> it will do exactly the same thing. it would be no different if the bolts were there. >> reporter: but the bolt is being done what on the fly. the final plans for the fabrication of the steel saddle may not be ready until monday at the earliest. >> getting them to this piece of steel fabrication and having it fabricated, that takes time. >> reporter: they can't be sure if it will be ready to open on labor day. engineers say safety is the most important consideration. >> you always get it right, but there's always that pressure. i've been here since 2002. there's always been pressure. >> reporter: the fabrication will be done at meryl island. but there's no idea how long it will take. the plans for the footballcation still haven't been submitted. that could happen again as soon as monday.

live on treasure island, ken wayne, ktvu, channel 2 news. police in sunnyvale are sevenning for two -- searching for two thieves who were pretending to sell magazines. it's believed both are in their 20s, the first, you see him here, he has short black hair, a mustache and a small goatee. the other is between 5'8", and 5'11", and also has short black hair. the investigators say the two men entered the home through an unlocked window, and stole jewelry. they drove away in a red tower door sedan. possibly, a ford taurus. now to santa clara, where a man was caught on tape stealing a package. it happened on may 17. the surveillance video from the home shows a man believed to be in his 30s, taking the package, putting it in a nike bag and gets back on his bike and rides away. the suspect is described as white, or latino with a medium build and a mustache.

chevron executives faced questions today about their environmental record. protesters called for the firing of ceo john watson. they want chevron to improve public safety. they also said the company must be held responsible for numerous spills and accidents. for its part, chevron says it provides 10s of thousands of jobs, a reliable source of energy and makes corporate investments in social programs. motorola announced plans for the first smart phone ever aseemabled in the u.s. the moto x will be put together at a plant in fort worth, texas. motorola was a pioneer in cell phones that lost ground to samsung and apple. a boot in the door in

a federal judge has given the go ahead for a brutality lawsuit against the city of san francisco. ktvu news was the first to show you this video of the encounter which happened in 2010. dale hunter was being processed at the county jail. he says as many as nine

deputies then punched and kicked him. the judge ruled any information about abuse by deputies and more video should be released, as that lawsuit moves forward. ed lee is celebrating a business boom that he says could rep roll back let square cuts. the budget gap is far from closed. and the budget gap created could still burst. >> mayor ed lee said he had another reason to celebrate. >> a good time to be in san francisco. >> reporter: the city is enjoying rising revenues, and a booming business economy, fueled by tech companies and record tourism. >> last year visitors generated almost $550 million in taxes that went to the city's general fund. >> reporter: that money is in park which he is rescinding

public services cuts in his new two year budget. >> currently, our system is so full that many people wait months and months before receiving those services. >> i was putting in a lot of applications, not really getting anywhere. i had the work ethic. i really wanted to work hard, but nobody would open their door for me. >> reporter: mayor lee says the door remains open to health service cuts. the city is still facing a $124 million budget gap next fiscal year. >> we've indicated to the agencies that this $25 million gap that we're covering, it's only for this year. >> reporter: on friday, mayor lee proposes his budget to the

board of supervisors. more details now. the san francisco travel association says hotel occupancy in the city is now on track to break a record this year. almost halfway through the year, officials now say hotel occupancy is at 83%. that's up from a low of 61% a decade ago. last year, the travel association said 16.5 million visitors came to san francisco. the national spelling bee concludes its two day run in maryland tomorrow with a semifinal, and final round. one of two bay area girls survived today's competition, and is now moving on. >> p-r-o-s-c-i-u-t-t-o. >> she got it right. the correct spelling for that type of cured ham propelled her

in san jose, there are some real concerns about crime. three people were killed this last weekend. and one woman tells us for the

first time in 34 years she didn't feel safe in her own neighborhood. tonight, people had a chance to hear what the city is doing about it. >> reporter: the meeting went longer than expected, as we heard concerns about the violent crimes. >> she's not feeling very safe. there's been so many robberies, and so many thefts. it just keeps increasing. >> reporter: long time resident, cindy calderon says the crime has changed how she feels. >> i, for the first time in 34 years have not felt safe in my neighborhood, for myself, and our grandchildren, and our children. because of all the murders going on. >> reporter: today, hand written notes where they were shot sunday. police are still investigating, but close friends who did not want to appear on camera insist the independent high schoolers were not gang members.

>> even though it was not classified as gang related. >> if it's a gang related homicide, our concern always is retaliation. >> reporter: less than four hours after that double homicide, justin walkens was shot and killed. marking san jose's 19th homicide this year. >> we really have to ring the alarm. and this is a situation reaching crisis mod. >> reporter: notoriously under staffed, with about 900 officers on the streets. about 200 short of what's budgeted. >> crime is at all-time highs. in almost every category. it's not rocket science, there's a deliberate effort to not fix this problem by city hall. >> reporter: the city says it is doing something. it's hosting academies, and for current officers, offering a 2.5% pay raise this year and next, and a 4% retense bonus through 2015. organizer make sure to tell the crowd here do not take the law

low income families. the state senate passed a bill that would allow multiple payment methods to charge their car battery. right now they must be member of a network. the measure now goes to the state assembly. a another measure would allow people without a social security number to submit other forms of identification, including a birth certificate and proof of residency. they would also have to pass a driving test. if approved, the new law would take effect in january of 2015. boeing says repairs to all of its 787 dreamliners are now complete. the company has replaced the lithium-ion battery systems that led to the grounding of those planes in january. boeing says the resign eliminates the risk of fire. most airlines that fly 787s have resumed commercial

an investigation is underway tonight after ricin laced letters threatening new york city mayor michael bloomberg turned up at two locations. police say one letter addressed to the mayor was opened friday at a new york mail facility. three people who came into contact with it became ill with a stomach ailment. the other letter was opened at washington, d.c. police say both letters reference the gun debate and had been mailed from shreveport, louisiana. tonight, christian barnes is behind bars in connection with yesterday's small explosion at disneyland. anaheim police arrested the disneyland drink offender last night. he's accused of putting dry ice into a water bottle, and placing it in the trash can in toontown where it exploded. no one was injured, but the area was evacuated. barnes is currently held on $1 million bail.

recommending that a san bruno father who fell asleep while driving be charged with manslaughter for an accident that killed two of his adult daughters. investigators say he was negligent because he was exhausted when he got behind the wheel of the family's lexus last november. he hit a highway patrol cruiser in palo alto. prosecutors have said they have have not decided whether to press charges. ktvu has learned the names of the three people who died on sunday. officials recovered the bodies. the cause of the crash is still under investigation. in news of the world in

pakistan, authorities say the number 2 member of the taliban was killed. the u.s. had a bounty on him for an attack that killed seven cia employees four years ago. the white house said his death would strike is serious blow to the taliban in pakistan. in afghanistan, two insurgents attacked a compound of the international red cross today. militants sometimes in small numbers have been staging attacks on international organizations. the red cross says it has rarely been targeted in 12 years since the afghan war began. in france, the first gay marriage in that country's history saw two men exchange their vows. they were married before hundreds of invited guests, and many more watching on live television. the wedding went off smoothly.

outside there were protests. france has also legalized gay adoptions. although when the first gay adoption will happen wasn't clear. the state approved tax exempt status for nonprofit groups. the move is seen as an attempt to put pressure on the boy scouts of america. the organization upheld its ban on gay adult scout leaders. if that bill becomes law, groups that deny admission of gays will have to pay corporate taxes on items such as donations and camp fees. a 60-foot tree falls on top of a bay area man.

day when all of a sudden he heard a cracking sound. >> to hear the sound and to not know what it was, and all of a sudden to have the tree on top of you, it happened that quick. i couldn't move. >> he says it took him a second to realize the pine tree had fallen on him. he managed to free himself. although he recently lost his job and needs to sell his house, he says he counts himself really lucky that he survived this close call. we've got some wind out there tonight. there's no fog right now. the fog has cleared along the coast. i think it will return tonight. but winds are gusting in this area tonight. those winds will probably allow some fog to reform right along the coast so be prepared for that in the morning. winds are sustained at 24 miles
