maureen naylor. 2900 block of huff avenue near the freeway interchange interstate 880 and highway 17 >> reporter: police tell us this was a fight among family members that turned deadly. it started inside in an upstairs apartment off huff avenue and spilled into the complex courtyard. tonight one relative is dead and another in police custody. as dozens of children played outdoors on this warm june evening, crime tape surrounded this west san jose apartment complex off winchester boulevard. >> we're quite certain this is not a gang-related homicide. it's more of a family matter. >> reporter: police tell us what started as a fight between two family members around 5:30 this evening ended up with one of the family members taken to the medical center and dying an hour later. >> someone died basically at the hands of someone else. >> reporter: police aren't sure what the fight was about.

>> three people that live upstairs i know there was people visiting from out of town. >> reporter: this neighbor who didn't want to be identified tells us a mother, husband and adult son live in the apartment. she says it's no surprise to hear of another disturbance with upstairs neighbors never of this magnitude. >> there has been disturbance in the past but i think it's normal with the family. >> reporter: tonight's homicide comes one week after a deadly stabbing around the corner. >> it seems to be really dangerous right now and kids playing around outside and i have my daughter and you can't even be out outside no more because what's going on. >> reporter: police at this hour remain here at the scene and plan to interview witnesses this evening. they dotel us this

gear walks out of a burning house and goes on a shooting spree. >> today's incident is not a college or school shooting. it's a series of shootings that occurred in the city of santa monica and culminated with a shooting that occurred at santa monica college. >> reporter: two people were found inside that burning house. a neighbor says the gunman walked out of the burning home hijacked one car and shot a woman in another. shortly after that he carried out a second round of shootings. >> a guy jumped out of a blue car and he had long curly hair like rasta hair and he jumped out of the car and started

blasting rounds from left to the right side, and then i was actually hiding under the dashboard because he was pointing at me. >> reporter: police say the suspect was shot and killed. >> the suspect headed toward the library shot at women on the campus before entering the library. the officers directly engaged the suspect and he was shot and killed on the scene. >> reporter: making matters more difficult airspace was closed because the president was at a fundraiser three miles from where the shootings took place. the event was not affected. more details now police say the gunman acted alone and that a person of interest arrested during the rampage has now been released. at this point police have not identified the gunman but they have confirmed that he was related to the first two victims found in the house. the la times is reporting those victims were the gunman's father and brother. triple digit heat in parts of the bay area. we found these children cooling off in a fountain in livermore

pollution. people with risper tore ishs are advised to limit time outdoors. all of our meteorologists post their forecast to twitter and facebook and you can find detailed information on our mobile apps. happening in san francisco a stretch of busy market street is closed to all cars and bicycles because of a 24 hour re paving project. department of public works crews are laying down about 1300 tons of new asphalt on the lanes that are closest to the curb. some bus lines are being rerouted because of the construction. market street is closed now between van nuys and 6th street it will be closed until tomorrow night. other parts of market will be repaved later on this month and next month. the price tag for the san francisco 49ers new stadium went up again today. the new estimate is $1.3 billion. that's about a hundred million dollars more than the last estimate. this cost increase will cover unspecified new elements that

the team says will quote enhance the fan experience. the 49ers also say they are paying for the additional features, not the city of santa clara. the labor department's monthly employment report is showing steady job growth nationwide. the labor department attributes the increase to more people beginning to look for work. the economy actually added 175,000 jobs in may indicate a modest pace of growth. still suggesting the economy has a way to go to full recovery. wall street liked the jobs report and stocks rallied. the dow industrials gained 207 points for its best day in 5 months. nasdaq added 45. the jobs numbers seem to hit a sweet spot indicating growth but not so much growth to end government stimulus. we're learning of suspicious transactions appearing on the credit and debit cards of customers at raley's supermax. we first told you last night

raley's computer system was hacked recently. amber lee is live in the park after speaking with one customer who says she was a victim. >> reporter: frank, the customer tells me she shopped here at this raley'last tuesday and hours later someone used her debit card number to make a purchase out of state. >> got it in today's mail. >> reporter: she bought groceries at raley's. she received an alert. someone tried to use her account number to charge a 224- dollar purchase at a walgreen's in ohio. >> oh, my god, this is unbelievable, absolutely unbelievable. >> reporter: strange suspected a connection since the raley charge and suspicious charge were the only ones on her debit card. she says she contacted us after seeing our report. >> somebody doesn't check their banking account before you know it they are not going have any money. so it's a rampant horrible

incident.. a store at the great mall was turned into a crime scene as police tried to figure out how a fight inside sports authority turned deadly. as ktvu's robert honda reports this is the first homicide of the year in milpitas. >> reporter: the popular sports authority store at the great mall in milpitas was shut down as police investigate touchdown city's first homicide of 2013. police responded to a call just before 11:00 a.m.

that two males were fighting inside and that a weapon was involved. mall workers weren't sure what was going on. >> it's kind of a little daunting, but i mean, it's just a little crazy that they are shutting everything down this happened and people on the other side of the mall have no idea. >> reporter: police say it all happened face the fight and the arrest. >> officer arrived on scene in 13 seconds and was able to take the suspect in custody. on the scene they discovered another individual halves deceased at the scene. >> reporter: police are not saying what kind of weapon was used or the ages involved but the killing did not result from a shooting. the great mall is cooperating with police and committed to the safety of retailers an customers. still some mall workers said they would have liked more information. >> i wish would have came in and notified us be on alert or be on the lookout. >> reporter: police say

investigators were still questioning the person arrested well into the evening hours and they believe he's the only person involved in the killing and emphasized there is no additional public threat. robert handa ktvu channel 2 news. authorities have identified a woman found dead in a ravine. the victim has been identified trisha hop. the sheriff's office said she had no permanent address but did have ties to pleasanton. her body was found by a hiker yesterday in west marin. investigators say her injuries appeared suspicious. an actress from texas has been arrested in connection with those ricin tainted letters sent to president obama and new york mayor michael bloomberg. 5-year-old shannon richardson appeared in federal court in texas today. the fbi said she first told investigators her husband sent the letters. then she said her husband forced her to send the letters.

last wednesday afternoon when it sped off. the car finally stopped at 77th and bancroft avenues and pete'ss and two other men ran out. after a chase police say an officer confronted peters saw he was armed and fired his gun at him. investigators say peters did have a stolen weapon, but have not said if he fired it at officers or if he pointed the weapon at them. no officers were hurt. oakland police were increasing the amount of officers on the street in weekend as part of a crackdown on site shows. chp officers will be patrolling if the city as part of their partnership with the oakland police department. you may recall last week 3 people were shot during a side show at 106th avenue and macarthur boulevard. police say the warm weather this weekend could also cause problems because more people may be out raising the potential for violence. oakland is holding its first friday festival tonight it is an event that organizers say puts more art and less violence on the streets, but

. the fbi is offering a $5,000 reward tonight for information leading to three men involved in four take over bank robberies including 3 bank jobs in just the past week. a bank of america in san francisco was hit yesterday. the fbi says these men are daring. their mo includes pointing guns at customers and jumping over the teller's counter to grab money. most robbers slip the teller a note. one man said he saw the three

knew there was something wrong just the dead eyes. he was sort of this the window just standing there like it was a picture window. >> reporter: a spokesperson for the marin county sheriff's office says ramirez died of natural causes related to live failure. he was 53 years old. reporting outside of san quentin mike mibach ktvu channel 2 news. a grand jury in ohio has returned a 329 count indictment against a man from cleveland who's accused of holding three women captive for the past decade. ariel castro is facing 177 counts of kidnapping and 139 counts of rape. he's also facing charges of aggravated murder for allegedly forcing the women to have miss carriages. castro was arrested last month after one of the women got the attention of a neighbor who then helped her escape from the home. he's currently being held on $8 million bail and is scheduled to be arraigned next week. a new drug to help fight obesity is about to come on the
