maureen naylor. 2900 block of huff avenue near the freeway interchange interstate 880 and highway 17 >> reporter: police tell us this was a fight among family members that turned deadly. it started inside in an upstairs apartment off huff avenue and spilled into the complex courtyard. tonight one relative is dead and another in police custody. as dozens of children played outdoors on this warm june evening, crime tape surrounded this west san jose apartment complex off winchester boulevard. >> we're quite certain this is not a gang-related homicide. it's more of a family matter. >> reporter: police tell us what started as a fight between two family members around 5:30 this evening ended up with one of the family members taken to the medical center and dying an hour later. >> someone died basically at the hands of someone else. >> reporter: police aren't sure what the fight was about.

gear walks out of a burning house and goes on a shooting spree. >> today's incident is not a college or school shooting. it's a series of shootings that occurred in the city of santa monica and culminated with a shooting that occurred at santa monica college. >> reporter: two people were found inside that burning house. a neighbor says the gunman walked out of the burning home hijacked one car and shot a woman in another. shortly after that he carried out a second round of shootings. >> a guy jumped out of a blue car and he had long curly hair like rasta hair and he jumped out of the car and started

blasting rounds from left to the right side, and then i was actually hiding under the dashboard because he was pointing at me. >> reporter: police say the suspect was shot and killed. >> the suspect headed toward the library shot at women on the campus before entering the library. the officers directly engaged the suspect and he was shot and killed on the scene. >> reporter: making matters more difficult airspace was closed because the president was at a fundraiser three miles from where the shootings took place. the event was not affected. more details now police say the gunman acted alone and that a person of interest arrested during the rampage has now been released. at this point police have not identified the gunman but they have confirmed that he was related to the first two victims found in the house. the la times is reporting those victims were the gunman's father and brother. triple digit heat in parts of the bay area. we found these children cooling off in a fountain in livermore

last wednesday afternoon when it sped off. the car finally stopped at 77th and bancroft avenues and pete'ss and two other men ran out. after a chase police say an officer confronted peters saw he was armed and fired his gun at him. investigators say peters did have a stolen weapon, but have not said if he fired it at officers or if he pointed the weapon at them. no officers were hurt. oakland police were increasing the amount of officers on the street in weekend as part of a crackdown on site shows. chp officers will be patrolling if the city as part of their partnership with the oakland police department. you may recall last week 3 people were shot during a side show at 106th avenue and macarthur boulevard. police say the warm weather this weekend could also cause problems because more people may be out raising the potential for violence. oakland is holding its first friday festival tonight it is an event that organizers say puts more art and less violence on the streets, but
