the old of the fleet in the nation. more than half the train cars date back to 1972, when b.a.r.t. first opened. only on ktvu 2, the new design being presented to the b.a.r.t. board tomorrow. >> reporter: go into the richmond maintenance yard, and take one look at the cars lined up on lift, and you will see keeping b.a.r.t. trains on track is no easy feet. they keep b.a.r.t.'s 669 cars moving. often, there's a long line outside, just waiting to get into the shot. >> we have eight pit spaces right here. two lifts, which are over there. >> reporter: the b.a.r.t. cars were state of the art in 1972, but not now. 479 of those original cars are still being used. the average age of b.a.r.t. cars is 30 years. compared to 26 years in chicago, and 20 in new york and

washington, d.c. maintenance workers say the train cars have been refurbished, but the cars propulsion, communications systemses, and monitoring systems are outdated. >> the whole fleet is getting old now. and they break down pretty awesome. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. has placed orders for new train cars, which will be built in upstate new york. here is our first look. we've obtained renditions of the new design, which includes three doors instead of two, for faster boarding. better pa, and cooling systems. the projected cost? $897million. >> our goal is to have 1,000 new train cars to replace the fleet of 669 that we have. >> reporter: the challenge? bart needs to pay a percent of the cost. >> to put $46 million away each year, so we have money to pay our share of what it's going to

and ambulances rushed to aid injured passengers aboard a muni trolley car. >> we decide when we call red alert, there's a potential for multiple injuries. >> reporter: this f line trolley car rammed the rear of a san bruno bus. 15 people were transported to hospitals with minor injuries. including seven children from the bay view dribble aboard the bus for a field trip. >> a few bumps and bruises, headaches. one of the girls said to me, it was a field trip to the cable car museum. now i'm going to take a field trip on an ambulance to the hospital. >> i saw the children when i came out, the children were crying. they were traumatized, probably. >> reporter: the children were in much better spirits as they boarded another bus to continue their field trip. >> everybody's fine. thank you. >> reporter: the crash shut down this busy intersection for

two hours, as investigators checked the scene. >> our mission is to move people safely through the city. the last thing we want to do is injury them. >> reporter: the drivers of both cars were slightly injured, and will undergo drug tests. they will look at surveillance screws to help -- videos to help determine the cause of the crash. state department of transportation officials are denying financial incentives will compromise safety on the bay area bridge. asked about the payment of incentives for finishes on schedule. plans for a labor day opening were in doubt. the lawmakers say public confidence could be damaged if there's an appearance of a rush to finish the bridge by the deadline, and pocket the extra cash. construction on the new 49ers stadium in santa clara is expected to resume tomorrow.

the site was closed for a second day today, after the death of a worker there. according to a preliminary report by cal osha, 63-year-old donald white was in the bottom of an elevator shaft when he was struck by a counterweight and killed. crews will start tomorrow with an all hands on deck, stand down meeting. a braising daytime robbery of a chinese restaurant, has residents on edge. saying crime is on the rise. about 1:00 this afternoon, armed robbers entered lee's garden restaurant. police say three men assaulted at least one person inside. one neighbors suspects the same group might be behind other crimes plaguing the city. >> where we're having a lot of robberies. if i don't see the police, these same two guys, they don't see them as well. that's the problem, is that we don't see visibility of the police department.

>> police are investigating. they say they plan to review surveillance video taken in the area today. >> reporter: some stagehands and charities are still waiting to get paid, after last month's bottle rocket festival. the festival owes 142 stagehands a total of $630,000. organizers blame a caterer for not paying the festival its share of food, and beverage sales. the caterer says it paid what it owed. the festival drew 120,000 people, and organizers say they want to hold another one next year. a high-tech company in the north bay has announced plans to lay off 125 employees. jds says most of the cuts will be at its santa rosa headquarters. the workers are in the optical products division. they design, and manufacturer optics for high speed communication networks. on wall street, stocks sank again today on worries of the

federal reserve's next move. the dow dropped 126 points. it's closed lower for three consecutive days. nasdaq fell 36. investors are anticipating the fed will reduce stimulus efforts. the questions seem to be how soon, and how much. safeway announced a big sale. it said it is selling its operations in canada for $5.7 billion to canada's second largest food retailer. it will use the money to pay down $2 billion in debt, and buy back stock. new at 10:00, a night of inspirational speechers drew hundreds of people to san jose's santana road. the talks are designed to inspire one of tonight's eight

police say they and a teen were involved in a gang related killing. the man accused of holding three women captive for a decade in ohio is pleading not guilty. ariel castro arrived for his arraignment today in cleveland. the first pre-trail hearing is set for june 19. if convicted, castro could face the death penalty. the head of the national security agency today vigorously defended his agency's once secret surveillance program, saying they have helped prevent dozens of terrorist attacks. >> if we tell the terrorists, they will get through, and americans will die. >> reporter: general keith alexander told senators, his agency was doing exactly what congress authorized after the 9/11 attacks. he went on to say edward snowden's claim that he could wiretap anyone's account was false. the fact that the government

immigration reform advocates rail idea -- rallied outside the home of diana feinstein today. one said she knows there's tough opposition mostly from republicans, but says with hard work and persistence, reform can be achieved. the bay area wife of an army reservist found out she will not be deported this weekend as expected. i.c.e. rescinded its order to send the woman and her baby to the philippines. >> they said if i asked to see a judge that i would be deported anyway, they didn't tell me that i was eligible to

apply for a green card. a man accused of kidnapping a teenage girl in fremont made his first appearance before a judge today. the excuse the suspect gave for sneaking into the girl's car. >> reporter: today, 23-year-old aron kumar roy appeared in court, accused of kidnapping a 16-year-old girl with a knife with the intent of raping here. the video is brief. a teen girl running by, dashing up the driveway. from she says he's chasing me with a knife. i wait for her to come. she met me halfway up my driveway, and we ran in the house. i hit the panic button, shut the door. >> reporter: after she got into the car, indicated he was going to rape her. she only escaped when he told her to stop the car and take off her clothes. police tracked down roy, after

matching the finger prints with those left on the car. >> the victim should get the most credit in this, she saved herself. >> reporter: roy was charged with attempt to rape, robbery, and possession of cocaine. when police arrested him, he told them he got into the wrong car by mistake, asked the girl to let him out, but she wouldn't. his family left court today without saying a word. his lawyer said roy is a good guy. >> he has no history of sexual assault. the only reason that his fingerprint came up, is because he has two misdemeanor dui's. >> reporter: the search of the suspect's mobile phone has rape porn. he is due back in court next month. take a look at your numbers from today. 86 in antioch.

steve this doesn't appear to be that video. we wanted to show you a helicopter evacuating an 83- year-old fisherman. we'll try to get thaw video in just a few minutes. meantime, hands free devices are supposed to make us feel safer behind the wheel. that's not always the case. >> reporter: the study found hands free talking on a cell phone innocent much safer than putting the phone up to your ear while driving. it also found voice activated texting is even more dangerous. this evening, we didn't have to look far to find a driver breaking the law and talking on a cell phone. a new aaa study found that isn't the most distracting thing a driver can do.

researchers hooked up drivers to devices to track their brain activity, and eye movement. >> would you like to access phone? >> reporter: then on a test course, drivers had to make calls. they sent and received texts, and emails. what they found, using voice commands was actually the most distracting. >> a lot of time, the voice recognition doesn't really work as it should. >> i try not to listen to the radio while driving. mostly talk radio, i get so into the story, i get distracted. >> the takeaway here is, we really can't do more than one thing at a time, successfully. >> did won't distract me. >> why? >> because everything distracts

me, so what's the difference? >> reporter: researchers say voice commands are more distracting, because they require more concentration than simply talking on the phone. aaa is taking this information to automakers and asking them to limit technology in cars. maureen naylor, ktvu, channel 2 news. here is that new video of a coast guard rescue. a coast guard helicopter evacuating an 80-year-old fisherman. the man had fallen ten feet between decks. the crew called for help. this happened 230 miles south of san diego out in the pacific. the coast guard flew the man to san diego. a graduate student from cal expressed deep remorse today, as he was sentenced to six years in prison for the drunk driving accident that killed his girlfriend and her young son. the 22-year-old and her 6-year- old son died following the accident in berkely last year. lopez had recently graduated from uc berkely.

he pleaded guilty to two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. in court today, he asked forgiveness, and says every day he wishes he could change what he did. a 25-year-old san jose man is under arrest tonight in connection with a homicide early sunday morning in sunnyvale. steven kraig bowie jr. is held on a no bail warrant. investigators say he shot and killed a man on fremont avenue. officers took him into custody at his home last night. the san francisco fire department is facing a whopping $542 million in fines for pollution. a lawsuit by the bay area quality management district says the problem is the nozzles. the city says they failed to install proper equipment. the fire department says now the problem is fixed, and they're appealing for a much smaller fine.

investigators are saying the damage to the 1924 historic building is at least $20,000. they're trying to determine what caused the three alarm blaze yesterday morning. fire officials believe it started in a room on the second floor. the red cross is assisting people who were forced out. jacob zula announced that nelson mandela is responding better to treatment. his family said they are deeply grateful for the prayers coming in from around the world. an australia woman tried to become the first to swim from cuba to florida nonstop without a shark cage. 11 hours in, multiple jelly fish stings stopped her. her crew said it would have taken 24 hours to recover.

in dubois, the world's tallest, twisted tower has opened. it is rotated on each floor to reach a full 90-degree spiral. it's supposed to minimum i think the shape of a human dna. most of the 500 apartments have already been sold. work began in 2006. but the recession, and flooding in the basement delayed the completion. habitat for humanity families took a break to build for children. the playhouses will go to children with a parent serving overseas. habitat for humanity says money raced from building the playhouses will be used to build real homes for deserving families. new at 10:00, a dance party with a purpose in oakland. a youth advocacy group held its second annual coming out party.

a 10-year-old pennsylvania girl is recovering tonight from a double lung transplant. she received lungs from an adult donor. doctors say they did not have long to live. her family fought for an exception, and it was only after a judge intervened that adult donor lungs were found. >> we waited 18 months for

pediatric lungs. we would not have gotten an offer that would have saved her life. without adult lungs, we would have lost her. >> the family of the 10-year- old says they are thankful. a girl enjoyed the ride of her young life today after undergoing surgery to repair 13 holes in her heart. hang on. the 5-year-old rode a dolphin at six flags discovery kingdom. last october, doctors discovered her heart problems when she went to get a physical exam for kindergarten. she asked if she could visit six flags when they drove by for treatment in oakland. >> she kept saying, when i wake up, can i come here? >> her mother says her daughter has always been a firecracker, and is now unstoppable. nothing can hold her back.
