>> complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is the 10:00 news an ktvu channel 2. >> an out of control bus slams right into a car. tonight, police say this situation would have been a whole lot worse were it not for the quick action of one passenger. i'm frank somerville. >> and i'm julie haener. a san francisco muni passenger is credited for stopping the out of control bus. the bus he was riding slammed into a car but stopped feet from on coming traffic. deb radio is live in san francisco with that passenger's

heroic action. >> reporter: it was like a slow- motion wreck that witnesses couldn't believe. the bus broad sides a car, jumps that curb and the distance between those two poles on to a grassy median until a passenger finally takes action. >> people were falling on the ground and glass was shattering. we were running into tree. >> reporter: frank was on this muni bus when it collided with a jetta sedan and kept going and going and going. >> i realized we were heading towards fail and we weren't stopping. >> reporter: the jetta careened almost 100 yards against the panhandle. >> it's like a tractor pushing a plow through the grass. >> reporter: people had to jump out of its path. >> the cars kept coming. i'm like, oh, my god, i better get out of here. two of us take our bike and

collide into each other. >> reporter: about that time, frank premis rushed from his seat in the rear to the driver. >> his eyes were open and he was mumbling something. i just put my foot on the brake and stopped it before it went into fail. >> reporter: stopped before crashing into four lanes of traffic. >> i was scared out of my mind. >> either the on coming traffic would stop the bus or somebody had to do it. >> at the time, you don't think about it. you just do it. i'm glad i did something. >> reporter: the bus driver went to the hospital, complaining of back pain. he is the only injury though. the driver of the jetta climbed out uninjured and police say he may be cited for illegally turning in front of the bus. now, frank, by the way, is a medical student at ucsf studying to be a surgeon. it appears that he has the

nerves for it. ktvu channel 2 news. >> petaluma police are asking for your help in finding the man who stole a bike right off of a bus. the bus had stopped at 4th and c streets last morning. you can see a man in a red jack pet black hat taking the $2,500 custom mountain bike off of the public bus rack. anyone with information is asked to call petaluma police. a witness helped police track down a hit and run driver in san jose this evening. robert honda sent in these pictures of a motorcycle that was hit at 7th street near spartan stadium. the person on the motorcycle suffered serious injuries. the witness and a police officer chased down the suspected hit and run driver who was then arrested. family and friends held a vigil to remember a young mother. she was killed when she just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. new at 10:00, maureen is live

in san jose and tells us that the woman died just as her life was beginning to look up. >> reporter: dozens here came to the church to remember this young mother said to be shy and overcoming big hardships while raising her young daughter. more than 100 people came to the church to remember the mother, a 23-year-old san jose mother killed in a freak accident. the family she had been living with wore hawaiian lace to honor her hawaiian heritage to what was an emotional memorial. >> i just loved her so much. >> reporter: the family took her in when she was pregnant, after years in the foster care system. soon she gave birth to her daughter, olivia, who is now 2 years old. ♪[music]

♪ somewhere over the rainbow. ♪ >> reporter: tonight, they sang her favorite song while playing a slide show of her and her daughter. >> we are saddened by the news and to have the baby girl taken away was something. really devastating. >> reporter: this evening a stuffed animal is placed at the intersection of lincoln avenue where she was killed last thursday. she was riding her bike to her new job when two commercial trucks collided. one fell on top of her, pinning her underneath. >> it's sad what they're going through. i'm very happy to help and be here and supportive. it's just awful. >> reporter: san jose city councilman is a friend of the family. >> it's a small town. i think when people have these tragedies, communities pull together to support. in this case, you have an orphaned child. >> reporter: and olivia was not at the memorial tonight. she is living with her

biological grandmother. ktvu channel 2 news. >> a 4-year-old oakland girl is recovering from head injuries after a two-story fall. fire officials say she fell from a window of this home on 23rd avenue in the fruit vail district. it happened about 4:30 this afternoon. a quick acting bystander jumped the fence to help her. he said the child was unconscious but woke up and he held her still until paramedics arrived. she was rushed to children's hospital. doctors say it appears she will be okay. >> a wildfire that raced across santa barbara county forcing hundreds from their homes is now contained. the fire started about 1:30 this afternoon near rice ranch in orchid. that's just south of santa maria. the fire quickly spread. that triggered the evacuation of hundreds of residents. the fire was fully contained at 4:30 after burning 30 acres. it was sparked by an

unpermitted welding operation. they believe this fire was intentionally set by highway 1 and highway 17. this is cell phone video shot from the freeway. the fire started about 3:00 this afternoon and burned about three acres before it was brought under control. one person was injured and taken to the hospital. santa cruz police detained two other people for questioning. >> stock markets plummeted today with news of the stimulus program. news of a slowdown in chinese manufacturing, then it spread around the world. the dow plunged 353 points. nasdaq lost 78 points. losses across the board. bonds, oil prices also fell. if you look at the chart, the dow has been steadily climbing despite the last two days of

who played oscar grant. >> reporter: frank, that's right. we did speak with him. we're in front of the grand lake theater. and the private screening ended just a short while ago. there's a lot of people still here. in addition to the actor, i spoke with the director. an oakland native wrote and directed the film. he now lives in richmond. he says he saw himself in oscar grant, whose life wasn't much different than his own and those of other african-american men that he knows. the film maker says that the killing of grant affected him. >> i see myself in him and my friends. >> reporter: tonight's event was attended by 1,000 people, including grant's family. they tell me the film shows the person that grant was, that he was much more than the unarmed passenger killed by a bart

from the woman's family and detectives. >> reporter: frank, investigators tell me what makes this case so unusual and so frustrating is that they have all the physical evidence that they need, they just don't have a name. up on a wall, he has a photo of his sister silva, the way he wants to remember her. >> she was happy and smiling. >> eric: she says she was 32 years old, a single mother of two who moved to bay point to start over after divorcing. >> she wanted to see her kids happy, have a good life. that's all she wanted. >> in this case, we have a lot of evidence. >> reporter: contra costa sheriff's department bell trans- says six years after the death, the leads have dried up. investigators say sylvia's boyfriend found the body just after midnight inside her home at the river shore apartments

off of willow pass road. >> what we do know is that the suspect at one point jumped out of that balcony. >> reporter: she was stabbed multiple times and bled to death on the floor of her apartment. no sign of forced entry, no sign of sexual assault or robbery. nothing has lead to her kill. >> that is the most frustrating part about the case, is that there was no indication that something was going to happen. >> reporter: reuben sandoval was among the last to see her. they worked at a market less than a block away. >> we were singing a mexican song. >> reporter: he said that night she asked him and a friend to follow her car home. >> when she stopped in front of the parking, okay, i'll see you tomorrow. she said okay. i'll see. >> eric: that was around 10:00 p.m. and two hours later, she was dead. >> we just hope that some day whoever did this, they're going

to get caught. >> reporter: investigators have cleared the boyfriend. they have reached out to social media and posted an anonymous tip line on the page. >> we're learning details about a $2 million marijuana bust. the california department of justice raided the stone lakes preserve on tuesday after a month-long investigation. agents seized more than 7,000 marijuana plants, 100 pounds of marijuana, and three guns. authorities have arrested four people. they think two of them are gang members. >> federal judges are threatening to hold jerry brown in contempt of court on the way that he is handling prison overcrowding. california has reduced the prison population, but not the level that the court wants. now the federal judges want immediate action. brown is asking the court for

more time. >> we'll have to wait until next week for the supreme court ruling on prop 8 which is california's same-sex marriage ban. the court should issue a decision by next thursday, which is the last scheduled day of the session. justices also have two other major cases pending, one on affirmative action and higher education, the other involves the voting rights act. for supporters and opponents of prop 8, the anticipation keeps building. we met joey and matt cook who volunteer been together for three years and want to get married. it seems that they and a man against same-sex marriage both have the same routine. >> i got up immediately, pulled up my phone, saw that cnn and other new sources hadn't released any sort of update. >> i check my iphone, look for tweets with different people back east that are following this. >> bill mays says he is

contact about crime. and ktvu.com we posted a little to that interactive map. look for the web link section right on the front page. >> ktvu has obtained exclusive video showing a hit and run as it happened. a taxi driver is accused of hitting and killing a pedestrian and leaving the scene. ktvu david stevenson obtained that video that shows what happened from the view inside the cab. >> reporter: camera mounted inside the taxi cab show the moment of impact when it strikes and kills a young man. the accident happened in late october of 2010. the victim was 19-year-old alberto rodriguez. closing statements were heard in the case on what would have been his 22nd birthday. >> he was a bright, special person. >> reporter: the taxi driver is charged with misdemeanor vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of an accident, a

felony. prosecutors say chin ran a red light and must have known that he struck someone by the noise and the impact on the windshield. he drove half a mile before rodriguez's friends caught up with him, climbed into the cab and demanded that he return to the crime scene. defense attorneys told jurors that he was unsure about what happened but said he had the right-of-way. chin's lawyers said that rodriguez caused the accident by crossing against the light while wearing dark clothing. they say that chin never saw him. >> we're upset at the fact that we don't have my brother here anymore. >> reporter: the jury got the case this afternoon and will continue deliberations tomorrow. if convicted he faces a year in jail for vehicular manslaughter and up to four years for leaving the scene of an accident. david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. >> temperature warm today.

>> thieves pulled off a bold heist in oakland and it was all caught on camera. it happened add 3:00 this morning on park boulevard between interstate 580 and mop enter a boulevard. it shows the thieves ramming into the front of the building, grabbing an atm machine accident throwing it into the back of a truck and drove away. no word on how much money was inside the machine. a teenage boy found with a gunshot wound in san jose has

died. he was found shortly after 6:00 last night. they identified him as razua of san jose. police say the killing was gang related and they have no suspects. the teen's death marks san jose's 25th homicide this year. >> prosecutors in stockton are calling a convicted murderer the closest thing to a serial murder. he has been found guilty of killing a woman and stuffing the body instead a garbage can. but she wasn't the man's only victim. >> reporter: the crime stunned the city of pleasanton last year. the woman wasn't killed here but in stockton where she lived, her body dumped here in a trash can. >> i want him to stay in prison the rest of his life. >> reporter: last week, the prosecutor secured a 15 years to life sentence for second degree murder for this man. he is 35-year-old sandoval.

circumstances of the death. i know nothing. >> reporter: we talked late this afternoon with penada's sister. in pleasanton, ktvu, channel 2 news. >> a former world champion boxer from pittsburgh is now facing charges in six bank robberies in the east bay. authorities say they have arrested 42-year-old james page allegedly seen here in this surveillance photo. a federal grand jury indicted him for bank robberies in walnut creek, emryville, lafayette all over the last four months. he could get up to 20 years in prison for each robbery if convicted. police say he took a total of about $18,000. >> pushing, shoving, then a stampede. in news of the world, the event for a sports super star that had to be canceled. >> a lot of times it takes us

the wind and solar and green energy alternatives that actually create more jobs and are healthier for the environment. >> if the pipeline is approved, it would bring oil from canada all the way across the united states and down to the gulf of mexico. bart union employees today handed out flyers to commuters to get the word out about a possible strike. contracts for the two largest unions end at the month. bart says it hopes that state mediators can help break an impasse over pensions and worker safety. >> big changes coming soon to one of the most congested corridors in the south bay. caltrans is debuting new lanes on interstate 880. ktvu robert honda tells us how soon drivers can expect relief. >> reporter: things are going to change soon on 880 and for once things will be moving fast since usually during commute

hours -- >> dead stop. two miles an hour. i drive a stick shift. it's first and second gear all the way. >> reporter: they will remove the familiar cones that line the stretch of 880 in both directions from 101 in san jose to state route 237. the agency says that will give some motorists a chance to get familiar with the change from 6 to 8 lanes. then starting around 5:00 a.m. monday, those new lanes become hov lanes. dustin works at a nearby glass shop and has to deal with morning and evening commutes. >> it takes us twice as long to get over here than on saturdays. with the carpool lane, it will be a big help. >> reporter: michael agrees. >> 880 connecting to 237 west in the morning until 10:30 is bad. >> reporter: the project moved long in other ways. the $64 million project began in the spring of 2012 and will

be ready one month ahead of schedule. but he also worries could it generate more traffic. >> with the carpool lane being there, a lot more people are use it. it will attract more traffic. >> reporter: caltrans says that would be fine as long as more people are carpooling and actually using the new lanes. in san jose, robert honda, ktvu channel 2 news. >> a warning out about a mail fraud suspect who may be looking for a tech job in the bay area. brucely marshall has been indicted for $100,000 fraud scheme and convicted for altering a passport. the 38-year-old san francisco man also goes by the name of francis marshall. >> the power is back on in vallejo after a transformer lost power. the fire was reported at 8:00 this morning in front of a home at almond avenue and willow street. flames were coming out of the ground from an underground

electrical vault. the fire set some shrubs on fire. more than 800 customers lost power. pg and e crews restored power this afternoon. a contractor accidentally hit a gas pipeline on bus kirk avenue. that accident happened just as pg and e showed us a new project to prevent similar accidents in the future. gps surveyors are marking the precise location of every major line from bakersfield to the oregon border. the data will be fed into a control center that will open late this summer. >> in quebec, canada, a massive explosion at a fire works warehouse killed workers. fire officials say it took hours to get the fire under control because the fire works kept going off and no fire hydrants nearby. the bodies of two women were found in the burned rubble. it started with an explosion in

a small building and then spread. in china, fans pushed past police to get close to david beckham. then it turned into a stampede. officials quickly canceled the event. beckham is in china as an image ambassador for soccer to promote a chinese soccer league. organizers apparently underestimated his popularity. and across large parts of southeast asia, haze is triggering health warnings. it is coming from fires in neighboring land. the smog has spread to malaysia and singapore. it has led to closures of schools and businesses and cancellations of sporting events. >> new developments in the case of a canadian tourist whose body was found in the water tank of a hotel in los angeles. the medical examiner says 21- year-old lamb accidentally drowned. a maintenance worker checking out complaints about the

five of the jurors are described as white and one is latina. testimony is scheduled to begin on monday. >> the discount store ross has been fined nearly $4 million for selling defective children's clothing despite warnings that the clothes could cause injury, evening strangulation deaths. the company has agreed to pay a 3.9 million fine. the company had previously paid a $500,000 fine for not reporting that it was selling the defective clothing. no deaths or injuries have been reported. one san francisco neighborhood hungry for a grocery store is about to get one. the first full service grocery store in the mid market neighborhood will be located in the twitter building. it will be run by small foods. the market will kind of be a cross between whole foods and the ferry building marketplace. >> yahoo has expanded its realm
