we begin with heather holm es. >> reporter: no matter destination, l.a., chicago the flight is delayed or cancelled it might be more of the same tomorrow because of the weather you mentioned but also because of a runway closure that i just learned about. it was a long and lonely wait for some stuck at sfo for hours. >> never been delayed like this. never. >> reporter: passenger frustration boiled over with every glance at the board's departures. >> generally during nice weather, clear weather we can have an arrival rate of as many as 60 nights an hour but during weather like this with clouds outside, our arrival rate goes down to 30. >> it is a little dispointing. going to be a long night. >> reporter: jackie and her husband are trying to get back to denver their 7:00 p.m. flight delayed 4 hours.

it wasn't better for this woman bound for seattle her wait 3.5 hours news was worse for this passenger planning to visit family if bakersfield her flight was cancelled. more than 100 nights never took off or landed. >> pretty much spread across the board. short all flights long cross country flights. >> reporter: thunderstorms on the east coast contributed to the slew of cancellations and airline travel may not be much better tomorrow. in addition to more wet weather, we have learned work at the airport will impact the runways. one runway will be closed now until saturday morning. >> it is awful. >> reporter: given all that, she decided to pass on her flight rescheduled for bakersfield, tomorrow afternoon. >> we will rent a car and get out of here. >> reporter: that reduced arrival rate that the duty manager spoke about will remain in effect until 1:00 a.m. live tonight here at sfo, ktvu

most week days during commute hours with the threat of a strike looming bart and unions are trying to win public support one passenger tells me she noticed customer service has improved. >> they have been incredibly friendly and pleasant and it has been really good service the last couple weeks. >> reporter: the issues negotiated are salary increase, medical benefits and pension today the unions announced they have filed a lawsuit accusing bart of quote failure to bargain in good faith they say bart refuses to negotiate on safety issues. >> our members have been assaulted, violated and killed they have refused to do it, over years the only way we can get them to come to the table is file a lawsuit. >> i think it is a smoke screen, it is trying to cover up the fact they are asking for 23% pay increase. >> reporter: workers including train operators and station agents will be voting tomorrow

in the windy city tens of thousands of chicago blackhawks fans partying in the streets they poured out of their homes and bars after the blackhawks defeated the bruins in boston. fans are gathering all over the city police are trying to keep a lid on the celebration. no reports of any trouble as for the game itself, mark will have more on that later on in sports. one man is dead and his girlfriend fighting for her life tonight after they were shot at a muni bus shop in san francisco this afternoon the the two were sitting at west point and middle point road at 1:00 p.m. today. witnesses say a car drove up and someone got out and started shooting. police evidence markers indicate 30 shots were fired. a cousin of the critically injured 17-year-old girl identified her and said she was shot in the head she under went surgery at last check san francisco general says she

remains in critical condition tonight. pentagon reporting a soldier from monterey county has been killed in action in afghanistan. specialist javier sanchez was 28 years old killed by an impro vised explosive device yesterday he was from green field in monterey county and based with the 10th mountain division in new york state. the wait continues no decision from the u.s. supreme court on california's ban on same-sex marriage. at the state capital lawmakers paid tribute to accomplishments of gays and lesbians, and governors declared june lbgt month if the court up holds the same-sex marriage ban they will work on a constitutional amendment to put before voters in november next year. even if the supreme court doesn't do what we would like it to do it is a matter of time

it is a word many pittsburgh residents didn't want to hear. one of their valued fire stations will be shut down. paul chambers was at tonight's meeting with unhappy neighbors. >> reporter: there are a total of three fire stations here in pittsburgh one behind me another across town they will have topick up the slack when the third station closes its doors. residents were on hand as they were given bad news fire station 87, will no longer run calls, starting next month. >> we don't get the police to come when we need them and now it is going to be fire department too. we used to rely on you guys now you guys going to be abandoning

us. >> reporter: they say the recession caused property tax revenue to go down on top of that a special tax with measure q failed. fire district officials said they did all they could to avoid cuts but were left with no other options. even after we have taken several steps, reduce programs, reduce support services the only thing left for us to cut is several stations. >> reporter: seven fire companies were cut and five stations closed in east contra costa county. walnut creek, 2011, 2012 concord and so far this year, clayton, lafayette, martinez, another in walnut creek and now pittsburgh. i think they should keep the station open, we have a lot of industry in this city, fires, in east county, about to get hot, it is summer.

>> reporter: the fire district has already been spread thin and relies on mutual aid. fire station 87 will close july 8th firefighters will be transferred to other stations more than likely another station will close january, but it is not clear which community will take that hit live in pittsburgh, paul chambers ktvu channel 2 news. a man is recovering after fire crews rescued him from a burning house in walnut creek. a passer by called 911 after seeing black smoke coming from the home. firefighters searched the house and found a man unconscious he later regained consciousness and was take on the hospital with minor burns and smoke inhalation. concerns over potentially deadly air bourn virus prompted a federal judge, to move several thousands inmates they want them moved out of the state prisons both located in the san joaquin valley where

misunderstanding with the baby. the 23-year-old is still on the run his family disputes claims by police he is armed. new information tonight on an inmate who apparently hanged himself at marin county jail the family of the 30-year-old said he suffered from bi-polar disorder and experienced a psychotic episode. during that trip, he is suspected of killing a castro valley woman at a rest stop in oregon and carjacked a man, and attempted to carjack a woman in mill valley he was found dead in his jail cell on friday. continuing coverage on the possibility of a bart strike. ktvus david stevenson spoke with commuters and those in charge of public transportation as they brace for the worst. >> reporter: bart trains carry about 400,000 riders each week day. no other transit system in the bay area comes close to that.

a strike would leave riders in limbo. >> it would be difficult for me i use it to go back and forth to see my family. >> all my classmateteachers rely on it as well i don't know if i could get to school. >> reporter: for the metropolitan transportation commission it is an emergency scenario. >> if it happens we will feel it and widely. >> reporter: they will meet tomorrow with partner agencies about increasing ferry service and adding trains and buses but other transit systems can't completely pick up the slack. many cal train cars are already at capacity during peak times. it will be hectic for people who have to travel through the train. bad. >> the scope is uncertain because we also have contracts expiring at several other transit agencies including ac transit. >> reporter: mtc says impact will be most visible on the bay bridge and peninsula headed to

sfo. the hope is many will share seats. we have a robust system of car pooling now, between east bay and san francisco that network will have to broaden to really cover all the other places that the bart goes. >> reporter: the mtc is advising commuters to consult the 511 website if a strike occurs. city of oakland and alameda county will pay protestors a million dollars under a tentative settlement approved today 150 protestors sued claiming police and sheriff's deputies illegally jailed them after a protest at the sentencing of meheserle. he served two years in prison for the 2009 shooting death of oscar grant. protestors will receive payment ranging from 5 to $9,000 each.
