thousands of dollars stolen from the school pta. tonight we confront the parent accuse in the case. good evening i'm julie haener. >> and i'm ken wayne. frank somerville is off tonight. a south bay father tells us he's embarrassed tonight by the felony charges he faces for siphoning money from the pta fund of his children's schools.

patti lee is at haven elementary school. >> reporter: a lot of families around here feel betrayed because keith bennett's connection to these schools goes beyond the pta. he was also a substitute teacher. >> are you mr. dennis? >> i am. >> reporter: keith dennis seemed horrified to know that the word was out that he was accused of pocketing $27,000 intended to benefit students at lee haven elementary school. included his children. >> i just hope it gets remedied for everybody. >> reporter: dennis gained access by volunteer as its financial secretary. investigators say for the past two year, dennis forged the pta president signature on checks

for himself on fictional fundraisers. >> i don't know how it's going to affect us next year. >> reporter: alexander re reyes son attends the elementary school. >> as far as i know he wasn't working. >> reporter: the dennis family keeps to themselves and they have never been outward signs of trouble. >> i'm not going to just condemn him without knowing his side of the story. but i mean, it's obviously not a good thing to do. >> reporter: we did ask keith dennis why he stole the money and if it was because the family was strapped for cash, but that the point in the conversation he referred me to his lawyer. reporting live in san jose, patti lee, ktvu news. only on 2 tonight, a special gang task force is back on the street of san mateo

county. and offers are on the way to making record arrests. authorities added to that total. eric rasmussen was there. >> reporter: officers escorted this wanted norteno gang member out of his family's home at the notorious 200 block apartments in san mateo county. earlier in the day, detectives got the word the 20-year-old was in violate of his probation. >> information coming in is also armed and dangerous. drug sales. >> reporter: detectives alfredo godino are among 20 members of law enforcement making the gang task force. in the last two weeks, this specialized team has made nearly 70 arrests throughout the county. >> it's actually on pace to set a new record even for our gang task force. >> reporter: officers have seized several high powered guns including a 12 gauge shotgun. >> part of the mission this summer is random searches of gang members who are on

probation or parol. the man in question is already locked up. but officers are still looking for signs of illegal activity. this time officers found an air soft gun painted to look the real thing. >> it will definitely put fear in somebody. >> reporter: despite a string of shootings last month that prompted the police chief to call a crime energy, godino says the latest jump in arrest is due to proactive policing and not less crime. >> they're doing a great job coming out here and setting record numbers. >> reporter: the gang task force will remain on patrol through august. in san mateo county, eric rasmussen, ktvu channel 2 news. two suspected gang members in oakland will stand trial for a drive by shooting that killed a 3-year-old boy. the judge said today after a three day hearing he's heard enough evidence to put lauren denard and willie torrence behind bars for murder and attempted murder.

a bullet hit eric nava in the neck. he died a few minutes later. two other men were injured in that shooting. the gunfire was part of a long- standing feud between gangs over drug turf. police want the public to be on the look out for battery. police are looking for martin. he is described as 6'6", 220 pounds. police say he went into an apartment and inappropriately touched a woman while she slept. he fled when she awoke and screamed. a motorcyclists is in critical condition after a head on collision. it happened just before 6:00 this evening on clayton road near oak street. investigators say the driver of the car who struck the motorcyclist is suspected of driving under the influence and has been arrested. a fire damaged two homes and killed two pets this

afternoon. the fire quickly grew to two alarms. this is video of the damage from news chopper 2. it's not clear if anybody was home when the fire started. firefighters say two dogs were killed and one cat was rescued. also one firefighter suffered minor injuries. still no word tonight on what caused that fire. >> that was three world war ii era grenades being detonated today. the chinese made grenades were discovered this morning in the home of a person who had recently died. the bomb squad figured the grenades were unstable and evacuateed the near by homes until the all clear was given. dozens of workers protested in the port of oakland this afternoon calling for action against some airport restaurants. >> the workers say some

businesses are firing, disciplining and cutting hours for employees who support unionization. it's now been a year since employees started their campaign. >> we're tired of waiting and we think it's time that the port actually does something like, the port has tried helping but we feel like the process can move faster. >> reporter: earlier this month the national labor relations board found several restaurants at the oakland airport did violate federal laws. san francisco's castro district is eagerly awaiting this weekend's festivities. ktvu's amber lee is live in the castro to tell us how yesterday's supreme court decision is expected to make this year's celebration even bigger. amber-- >> reporter: julie i want to show you what's going on right now behind me. crews are putting up barricades for the weekend's pride celebration. the mood is euphoric out here.

his first comments. brown welcomed the decision after years of a long struggle. he said he has consulted with camela harris and gave this order to all 58 counties in california. >> to begin performing all marriages, same-sex or other wise as soon as the stay is lifted. >> reporter: lifting the stay is expected to take at least 25 days allowing time for the opposition to appeal. governor brown also signed california's budget today. in six minutes the big winners in the $96 billion spending plan. and why one local facility could be forced to close. an earthquake rattled the san benito area an hour ago. it registered 3.9 and officials consider that a light earthquake. we have been hearing from viewers on our facebook page. one man in hollister said he felt it strongly there. most of the comments have come from people in the south bay

death penalty. the indictment has details of the brother's bomb plot that killed three and injured thousands. it says the motives were islamic extremism and the brothers got instructions on how to build a bomb from an al- qaida website. the judge said no to a bail request for a former new england patriot aaron hernandez who was accused of killing a friend. the judge said she was not comfortable releasing hernandez and that she shouldn't get special treatment because he's a celebrity. he is charged with the execution killing of odom lloyd. boston police are investigating a possible connection between hernandez and a double homicide last year. the fremont man convicted

of murdering a newark man. ofoa was 18 years old when howard and two of his friends got into a fight. howard stabbed ofoa several times and he died at the scene. rafael tovar and 19-year-old guzman both of newark were also arrested in connection with this case and are both awaiting trial. governor jerry brown signed an on time and balanced state budget. the $96 billion spending plan makes education and health care top priorities. >> reporter: a public signing of a budget before a room full of happy people is usually a good sign. >> it is a big day for school kids. it's a big day for californians who don't have health care or don't have adequate health care. >> reporter: k-12 schools are the big winners with more money targeting districts with low income students. san francisco for example will see $300 more per student next

year. other winners $175 million to fund college scholarships for middle class students. and $206 million for mental health care programs. >> and thousands of people will benefit as a result. >> reporter: governor brown also signed a bill that expands medical coverage in advance of president obama's health care plan. while some celebrate medical expansion, the hope that past medi-cal costs were gone. >> that's enough to cause the hospital to shut its doors. >> reporter: shay says nursing facilities such as jewish home in san francisco may be forced to lay off staff because of cuts to medi-cal. reimbursement rates this as more people will be on medi- cal. >> more patients into the system and fewer providers to

care for them. >> reporter: times are too uncertain to restore more health programs. ken pritchett, ktvu channel 2 news. more details now on the state budget. it increases child care and preschool funding by more than $100 million. $63million is being restored to the state court system. but that's less than court officials and some lawmakers had wanted. the budget takes effect on monday. wall street rallied again today. the third day in a row the dow rosed 115 points and closed above 15,000. nasdaq added 25. investors liked news that consumer spending and incomes were up last month the most in three months. u.s. mortgage rates suddenly jumped to new levels. the average fixed rate surged almost 4-1/2% this week. that adds thousands of dollars to the cost of buying a home. a pull back from federal stimulus is expected to send rates even higher. it's warm out there right

oakland police chief held an urgent hearing with his command team just hours after his city's latest homicide. police say they responded to reports of gunfire on hillside street around 3:20 this afternoon. they found a man dead at the scene. chief went told members of the force he is shifting resources to address a recent crime surge. he plans to send mobile command mosts to troubled areas along with problem solving officers and members of the highway patrol. san jose police are asking the public to help identify a man who held up a store at

gunpoint last month. this is surveillance video of the robbery. it happened just before midnight at the little grocer store in south san jose. the suspect demanded money before he fled the store with an undisclosed amount of cash. he's described as african american. 5'8" tall and approximately 150 pounds. plans to build an enormous solar farm south of silican valley moved forward this week after a state appeals court rejected a plan. the project is 50 miles southeast of holister. if approved the solar planet would provide enough electricity for 250 homes. the assembly passed a bill today aimed at approving air quality but it will cost you. aba extends fees on new tires. those fees are expected to

oakland firefighters made quick work of a vehicle fire that spread to a near by home. the fire was reported around 6:30 at 87th avenue and international boulevard. firefighters had it out in just about 10 minutes. no one was hurt. gas prices are rising right along with the summer temperatures. as mallory huff reports, it's something more unusual than this summer hike. >> reporter: if you think it's

removed. the fine for parking in a disabled zone will cost $500. san francisco has a new approach in the fight against domestic violence. for the first time the district attorney's office is battling domestic violence crime. before all the components were spread out across the third floor with not enough people to do the job. but a supplemental budget allowed the office to add nine people into the mix and now they are all housed together on the second floor. >> if we can envelope them with enough resources and enough support early on we'll be able to hopefully get their support, cooperation and sustain that through the prosecution. >> reporter: city leaders say domestic violence deaths are down 90% in san francisco. everyone so there were still 7,500 911 calls to report domestic violence last year. a shocking charge, a couple received a water bill for $11,000. >> looked down. it can't be. >> the excuse for the big bill.
