tense moments at one of the nation's busiest airports when the landing gear fails on a southwest airlines flight, and passengers are told to evacuate. good evening, i'm ken wayne, in for frank somerville. >> i'm julie haener. a southwest flight ends nose down on the tarmac as emergency chutes deploy, and passengers evacuate. this time it happened on the east coast, and without loss of life. debra villalon is live at oakland international with what happened in new york late today

and its impact in the bay area. >> reporter: it was a southwest flight landing at laguardia, when its landing gear collapsed. snarling that airport even now. >> i don't know if the front wheels on the plane, the landing gear buckled. but that's scary. >> reporter: witnesses described this 737 touching down. its nose slamming to the runway, then screeching to a stop, tipped forward. >> the foam wheel didn't come out. it landed on its nose and started skidding. >> reporter: there was no fire, and the passengers and crews were able to evacuate the plane on emergency chutes. >> we had up to 10 persons treated at the scene. four refused medical attention. >> reporter: and treated at the hospital. mostly back and neck pain.

some anxiety. the flight was coming from nashville. apparently unevent. at the end, when the nose gear failed, air traffic controllers scrambled to divert other inbound flights, and alert first responders. >> i tried not to think about that at all. that's the last thing i need on my mind. >> reporter: frequent fliers tell us, this doesn't shake their faith. >> nothing is 100%. but flying is probably the safest way to travel. >> reporter: likely looking at mechanical failure on the jet. >> i had one incident where the plane had to abort the approach and landed the second time. >> reporter: many travelers fly southwest often for business. it has the largest fleet of 737s. >> i think mechanically, they're reliable. planes don't usually fall out of the sky.

>> reporter: laguardia shut down for about an hour tonight, then reopened one of two runways. many flights are delayed, or canceled, and full operation isn't expected until morning. reporting live in oakland, debra villalon, ktvu, channel 2 news. a palo alto man died in the crash of his small plane today, his wife survived thanks to the help of a nurse who just happened to be passing by. witnesses said it appeared to be in trouble right away. the plane came down in a wooded area, about a mile from the airport, and ended up upside down. 67-year-old steven leften died on impact, but his wife, karen leften was alive. and happened to be fortunate a nurse was walking by. >> she's playeried to one of our deputies.

she arrived at the scene within minutes. >> steven is said to be an experienced pilot who took meticulous care of his airplane. a good samaritan was struck and killed by a passing car. noel walker is live on the scene of the accident on interstate 280 in wood side. and tells us the 32-year-old man pulled over and was only trying to help. >> reporter: that accident happened just north of wood side road. it ended with one family choking back tears. there is a loss for words. >> i miss him. he's my little brother. >> reporter: when that loss is too great to measure. >> he was just the most beautiful person i had ever seen inside and out. >> they were soon to be starting a family, and didn't

get that chance. >> reporter: 32-year-old kirk peterson was driving on 280 early sunday morning, when he happened on an accident. he ran across the freeway to help victims in an suv that was pushed across lanes into the guardrail by a suspected drunk driver. another suv hit peterson. he died trying to help others. >> it was automatic. that was just kirk. he was selfless. put other people first. he wanted people to feel special, but it was him that was special. >> reporter: peterson was the youngest of the three brothers. a star basketball player who's team won gold twice in the panam games. his newlywed bride, now a widow, too young to bear that title, and the loss. >> he was all about his family. that was his number one priority always. >> reporter: tonight, peterson's childhood home is filled with love and support.

they know all too well what they'll miss, but say others will never know. >> a great guy. >> reporter: brandon peterson said his brother planned a surprise party for him on his birthday. it was the day of the accident. it was the last memory they have together. the highway patrol came to the rescue of an injured hiker on mount tamelpias. a 26-year-old new york visiter was unable to walk after she injured herself hiking on the trail above alpine lake. the helicopter lowered a paramedic, and hoisted her up, and took her to a waiting ambulance. a sail boat skipper is in custody facing federal charges after he allegedly assaulted a coast guard officer. the boat came to their actings

because it has no registration, or documentation markings. the coast guard says he refused to let a boarding party on his boat, then took off. an armed teen finally boarded the boat outside the gate. that's when the teen says mccoremick attacked an officer. he is being held right now in the san francisco jail. a suspicious buyer hag forced one of oakland's star chefs to temporarily shut down his restaurant. a surveillance camera appears to have caught two people setting the fire, and a good samaritan who might have saved the building. >> staff unloaded three white coolers of food today. the only supplies that they managed to salvage. the rest of the food, hundreds of pounds of seafood, meat, and vegetables had to be thrown away, lost, along with their

weekend business. >> hold the thing way up. >> reporter: the restaurant owner showed us this picture from his surveillance camera, which he says shows two men setting fire to a dumpster next to the restaurant about 1:30 a.m. saturday. the flames melted the electric meters on the side of the building, caughting off power. >> reporter: he says crime has become a part of doing business in oakland. the soprano's pizza shop has been broken into, and this weekend with the power out, he lost money. the building owner says there was a good samaritan on the video who moved the dumpster away from the building. >> he saved this building. >> reporter: this fire is a blow to an oakland native, who became the first chef to get a michelin star. >> like how many resources the city has to support a business

like this in actually staying open. >> reporter: the restaurant did have smoke and water damage inside. they hope to reopen by thursday, or friday. in oakland, jana katsuyama, ktvu, channel 2 news. 13 days and counting until b.a.r.t.'s one month contract extension expires. the two sides may need all of that time to make a deal. the union says he's the only one authorized to make a deal. b.a.r.t.'s general manager says the vacation was approved by state mediators and that negotiations are ongoing. >> we have negotiators at the table today. we'll have them there all week, and will be here all next week. we are actively negotiating day in and day out. >> the two b.a.r.t. unions representing train operators and station agents are threatening another strike if no agreement is reached. b.a.r.t. riders can now get a better

five people on a san francisco sight seeing tour bus were sent to the hospital after the bus hit a wire. the bus company responsible was warned of the potential hazard

just before the accident. >> for some tourists, it's the best way to see san francisco. but now under investigation after a double decker bus struck a wire on san francisco's richmond district. injurying five passengers. >> yeah, tragic. >> the accident happened out mark westcot's home. he says he tried to warn the bus company after another big bus struck and loosened the wire. >> i said hey, one of your buses just clipped a wire. it's probably a safety hazard. >> reporter: police say the passengers on the rear of the deck were worried about the wire moments before impact. sources tell us a woman nearly had her nose torn off. police say she has since approved, ability the other passengers are expected to recover. the driver stopped outside a fire station to summon help.

ellis lake park in concord. he was identified as 66-year- old steven harley tracy of concord. he was found floating in the lake last friday afternoon. the cause of tracy's death remains under investigation. but initially, investigators had said it appeared accidental. our exclusive ktvu field poll finds californians are less approval of president obama. 35% disapprove of the job he's doing. still 57% of those asked have a favorable opinion of president obama overall. new at 10:00, heather holmes is live in san francisco and tells us, republicans see this as an opening. >> reporter: they certainly do, ken with the president's approval rating plummeting, republicans see an opportunity with the gop set to launch a program that it hopes will have

an impact on the intern election. faced with few women in their ranks. >> growing opportunities for women. >> reporter: republicans are reaching out with a series of new programs aimed at recruiting more women to run for political office. >> i think it's great. i would love to see the day when it's 50% women. >> reporter: in march, she became the first woman elected vice chair of the state republican party. >> we don't have any women representatives in congress. that's a concern to me as a woman leader of the party. >> reporter: across the country, last election, democrats dominated with female voters. according to a study from the rutgers center. 109 republican women ran for the house. 20 won their elections. by comparison, 190 democratic women launched house campaigns, and 62 were elected. >> it is there to encourage

data, such as phone records unless a person is already being investigated. the second would predict gathering data such as phone calls and emails. gop leaders worry they may cut anti-terrorism efforts. the dow climbed just one point. it was held down from a report by mcdonald's that missed expectations. banks and mining stocks rose. nasdaq was up 12 points. the rerival of arrested development on netflix didn't pay off as well as expected. still, the company earned nearly $30 million in the 2nd quarter. shares fell though 7% in after hours trading. ebay is expanding its local delivery service called ebay now. in addition to san francisco and san jose, it's offered to customers on the peninsula. ebay now says the item will be

new pictures provide another perspective on the asiana crash at sfo that killed three people. the photos show the extensive damage inside the plane. you can see the cabin of the boeing 777 is completely charred. another shows the back of the plane, where the tail fell off. the faa and national transportation safety board are currently investigating the crash. the chairman says it typically takes 12 to 18 months to complete the final crash report. the san francisco fire department is still trying to determine which fire truck ran over an asiana passenger. the san francisco chronicle reports that truck 37 hit the teenager. the paper says the truck was not equipped with infrared technology, which might have detected the 16-year-old beneath fire foam. last week, the coroner confirmed the girl survived the crash, but was killed by a

responding truck. the san francisco grocery chain stunned customers and employees today by filing for bankruptcy production. the chain is already working to restore confidence. >> reporter: the crowd at mi pueblo's store doesn't look like a business coping with possible bankruptcy. but this morning, it filed for chapter 11 protection. >> this kind of place, is like an icon for san jose. it's kind of like safe way, and lucky chains and all of that. this is something for the hispanic community. >> is the mi pueblo chain in financial trouble? >> the issue we're having is with our main secured lender. we've had an impasse in negotiations. we're basically seeking the protection of the court to be able to continue on with our

here's a picture moments after he rescued an elderly man from a burning house saturday in hercules. he says he was driving by, saw the fire, stopped, an ran into the house. he found the elderly man sleeping, and he carried him outside. >> he looked like he was glad to get out of there. he was very surprised. firefighters basically told me he would have died. >> he went into the house a second time to make sure no one else was in there. the fire apparently started in a car engine in the garage. a video showing two california divers almost gobbled up by whales is getting a lot of views on youtube. the divers and the crew took video of the whales in the distance. all of a sudden, the water becomes turbulent from a school of frantic sardines, then two massive humpback whales breach the surface with their mouths open, right next to the divers. the divers escaped, joking

the investigation into doping. he issued a statement saying we not contest the suspension. he is the first player to be suspended in the wake of baseball's bio genesis investigation. that's the defunct florida clinic. more suspensions are expected. police in the south bay say they have arrested a teenager for rape in connection with an attack on a 41-year-old intoxicated woman. a taxi took the woman home after she had been drinking. the taxi driver needed help getting the woman inside. and enlisted the help of a mother and her teenage son. police say the 16-year-old boy later returned to the house and raped the woman. they say he returned again with two boys and burglarized the home. police say stolen items were found at the teen's home. now to alameda camera. catching a burglar in the act. eric rasmussen has the video that solved the case, and why police say they need all the help they can get.

>> this man may have thought he was all alone when he broke into this mako shop in san lee and row. cameras caught the burglar turning on the lights in the office, looking for car key it's, and later backing a mercedes out of the garage. he didn't seem to know the owner received a call from an app. saw the suspect inside his business, and called police. >> was this guy still in the business when your officer showed up? >> yeah, he was still in the business. it took some time to get him out. >> officer it's eventually found their suspect, hiding on top of this heating duct. they arrested 36-year-old justin tate of oakland, the business owner who didn't want to go on camera, says he's grateful to police. >> exactly what we've been promoting and hoping this is a perfect example of what will

happen. >> reporter: this was one of four arrests made in a 24 hour period. the trend is being felt all over the bay area. in san mateo, burglaries were up 45% in the first quarter of this year. they only wish more people were this prepared to protect themselves, and their property ktvu, channel 2 news. >> more details now. the san leandro police department is hosting a event called united for safety. it is this saturday. visitors are invited to tour the facility on east 18th street, and take pictures and meet some of the officers. taco bell started phasing out meals this month, and plans to completely discontinue them by january. taco bell said the kids meals don't fit with its overall strategy, and said they're not boosting sales either.

birth of the young prince. >> what better way to celebrate the birth of the royal baby, than with a promotional campaign. perks included massages, champagne, and other royaltiesque luxuries. incredible surveillance video of a man trying to rescue his dog from a fight with a raccoon. it happened outside the san francisco home of kevin rose early yesterday morning. you can see he rushes down toward the fighting animal it's, picking up the raccoon, and tossing it down the stairs. he says his dog suffered claw marks and bites and he had to receive an iv for fluids. you may remember this video of o'neil, who alerted of a

car. o'neil will not become a guide dog. officials said he showed negative reactions to loud noises and other dogs. it is likely o'neil will become a pet instead of a guide dog. boat owners are being forced to move their boats, because of falling water levels. managers were told they must remove their vessel before august 3. they say the water level is so low, if it drops another 12 feet, boat slopes will be in the mud. it is the result of a very dry winter. it was warm, muggy, and humid out there today. these are the official national weather service highs. with all of that cloud cover, mostly cloudy all day, but you still got 87 in antioch. 89 in fairfield. kind of like san diego weather this time of year. it was very warm, very humid. tomorrow, a little warmer.

a lot of moisture in the area. live stormtracker 2 picking out perhaps some light showers. right now, here by the avenues of san francisco, i suspect we might be seeing some drops, here north or east of ocean beach, we might be seeing drops as well. what we have today is what we have tomorrow, but warmer. so it will be kind of muggy again tomorrow, with a chance of showers. as you go into tuesday partly cloudy to mostly cloudy. the clouds start to get out of here, and we start to get more sunshine. this is the mechanism for pulling up all of that moisture from the south. add this low pressure system to it, and it creates a little more instability. that's where we are. i know this is a big big deal, but we could see a thunder shower. they've been seeing a lot of activity south of our area. that could workity way north

into the next 24 hours. tomorrow morning, maybe something there. but could see something here, here, and here. it's very widely scattered. in the morning, i would expect drizzle. at 5:00 tomorrow, it starts to clear out. there's your thunderstorms around lake tahoe. thunderstorms around bear valley. as we go into wednesday morning, right now all the moisture is going tout. the fog starts to creep back to the coast. then we get into thursday morning, and it's pretty clear. so what did i just say? tomorrow is a lot like today. chance of sprinkles, muggy, and cloudy. 86 in fairfield. after that, as we get into wednesday, things clear out rapidly. thursday and friday, clearing. you'll see that in the five-day forecast. 86 in livermore tomorrow. cloudy. 84 in morgan hill, sticky, cloudy. along the coast, temperatures in the upper 50s and lower 60s. the five-day forecast with the bay area weekend in view, hopefully, we don't see thunder showers in our area.
