blindingly bright. that's what some drivers are saying about the new lights inside the tunnel on the bay bridge. now we've learned these lights are brighter than they should be, and need to be fixed. good evening, everyone, i'm frank somerville. >> it can be a jolt to the senses. drivers crossing the new eastern span of the bay bridge, they say they need to shield their eyes to adjust to the intense lighting of the tunnel.

officials admit there is a problem. jana katsuyama is live outside the tunnel, she investigated the potential distraction and found out what's causing the lights to be much brighter than they should be. >> reporter: ironically, the bridge deck lights are designed to shine from behind the driver, but when you reach the tunnel, you get a full blast of light in the face. the old florescent bulbs have been replaced by l.e.d. lights, and right now, they're on full daytime settings all day. the 460 new l.e.d. lights make the passage brighter and cleaner, but many drivers say at night, it's blinding. >> it's very bright. it blinds me sometimes. >> the tunnel lights are very, very bright. it's very hard to see. >> the light was bright. it was irritating my eyes. >> we're still working on the

control system to make the necessary adjustments. >> reporter: illumination is measured in what is called a foot canal. right now, the light approaching the tunnel is about 3-foot candles. but when they enter the tunnel, the measurement jumps to 20. >> we're still working to find the right number of circuits that needs to be on at night. >> he says they have installed a sensor to measureambient light to measure. >> we will probably have one every 15 feature to be on at night. >> reporter: the chp said their officers have commented on the bright lights, but so far, the lights haven't caused any accidents. caltrans hoped to give the drivers some relief with dimmer

lights in the next few weeks. reporting live, jana katsuyama, ktvu, channel 2 news. the california state senate is scheduled to vote tomorrow for the new name of the original portion of the bay bridge. they call for naming the western span after willie brown. governor jerry brown opposes the renaming, and an activist plans to file the lawsuit. he points out lawmakers are only allowed to name state roads after the deceased. the biggest break yet in the killing of an 8-year-old girl. investigators released a sketch of a man. this is a sketch of the man who police say killed 8-year-old alicia carradine.

the killing happened on july 17. someone rang a door on the apartment on wilson street. as she opened the door, the gunman fired more than 10 shots. alishia was killed. her 7-year-old friend, a 4-year- old boy, and a 63-year-old woman were wounded. >> we want to find this person and remove them from our streets. this is a dangerous person. if they shoot children, what else would they do in our community. >> they also want to remind everyone, there is a $35,000 reward in connection with this case. police call it an inside job, the manager of an east bay mcdonald's is accused of robbing his own restaurant and forcing his own employees into the freezer. >> reporter: pleasantton police have been trying to track down the gunman behind a terrifying

takeover robbery at this mcdonald's in pleasanton last month. a golden opportunity at the golden arches. a mcdonald's manager is accused of using his knowledge of the restaurant to pull off the ultimate inside job. >> clearly desperate man to do that to people he works with day in and day out. >> reporter: the manager was the last person police were suspecting in the frightening robbery. investigators say around 3:00 a.m., august 28, a man doning a full face mask and white gloves climbed through the drive through window. he ordered the workers into the freezer and not to come out for 30 minutes. >> is it a sign of the times? they rob the place they manage? >> authorities say the fast food manager almost got away with it, but got greedy, and

targeted another mcdonald's five days later in san mateo. >> he put the girls in the freezer in the back, then he took the manager that was working, and took him to the safe. >> reporter: this employee is glad he wasn't on the clock at the time, saying he would have been terrified. >> no cell phone reception, so they couldn't call the police or anything. >> we put people in charge, because you know what? we value their judgment, and we trust them. >> reporter: after that robbery, an officer spotted the suspect's vehicle on the san mateo bridge. they say inside that vehicle, they found the stolen cash, a replica handgun, and cash. and they have a confession. heather holmes, ktvu, channel 2 news. now to the south bay, where officials have agreed to pay almost $5 million to settle a federal lawsuit brought by a man who was shot 20 times by san jose police. a guest at the extended stay

hotel found javier guerrero passed out in a stairwell in october of 2011. he was dressed for a halloween party with a toy gun in his waist band, officers say he reached for it when they tried to wake him up. four officers fired hitting gonzalez guerrero 20 times but he survived. it is said to be the largest moment paid for a case involving police contact. a former tsa security screener is under arrest tonight for threats that referred to something even worse than 9/11. these are pictures of the 29- year-old, from a religious website. the fbi arrested him last night. agents say he called l.a.x., and told them that the terminals should be evacuated. nothing was found, but later, a bomb squad checked out a suspicious package near his apartment in riverside, and found a rambling letter about his disdain for the united

states. now to our continuing coverage of the fire at mount diablo. cal fire says it is 80% contained. fire crews are assigned to mop up duties and monitoring. closures have also been lifted. at this point, the cause of the fire has not been determined. ktvu news has obtained emergency radio communications. they reveal just how quickly the fire changed from a manageable grass fire to an out of control wildfire. eric rasmussen has those recordings. they show the first firefighters briefly canceled help coming their way. >> reporter: in a matter of hours, hundreds of firefighters launched an all out assault to stop a wildfire. just after the initial call, around 1:00 p.m. sunday, the first cal fire team seemed to be dealing with

something much more benign. >> a quarter acre. >> one quarter acre, mostly contained. advising the rescue cancel. >> reporter: in a recording of communications provided to ktvu, you can hear some other units told to proceed without lights and sirens. a neighbor nearby told us he thought the first was out, but at 1:37 p.m., things change the. >> we received several calls in the last minute or two, people advising that the fire has possibly jumped and is over the hill. >> it is approximately half an acre right now. >> pretty clear at this point, that we had two separate fires. >> reporter: the cal fire chief says the first firefighters on scene acted appropriate. >> in this case, he thought he had one fire, he had one column

of smoke. he reported what he had. he went to work, and he was made aware of a second smoke. >> reporter: so some other firefighters say there should have been our units on the scene. recently partially closed to budget reasons, and if a crew would have been here, some say they would have been among the first to get to the fire. homeowners who were spared by this week's fire on mount diablo aren't out of the woods just yet. experts say they could see land slides once it rains. with no plant roots to hold it in place, it's just the kind of material that can come washing down with the rain. firefighters battling a wind whipped fire discovered a man's body blackened by the clover fire. cal fire says this blaze destroyed 37 homes and

continues to threaten hundreds more. it started monday. the burned body of brian stanley henry was found last night. it is burning near happy valley. some 8,000 acres have burned. tonight, that fire is now 50% contained. investigators are still trying to figure out what caused it. san leandro police are asking for the public's help in finding a woman that's been missing for the last 70 hours. she is described as 5'2", about 105 pounds with blonde hair and hazel colored eyes. she has been missing since sunday. anyone with any information on her whereabouts is asked to contact police. homeowners tell me this is the mess they see when they get up in the morning. one man

ramon tonight to tell us why the problem has recently gotten worse. >> reporter: this is an area filled with beautiful single family homes and manicured lawns, but take a look at this. neighbors tell us, during the past month, wild pigs have been tearing up their yards. >> sometimes they make like weird squealing noises. >> we were the first ones to get tracked. >> reporter: they've seen wild pigs on their lawn twice in the past week. the most recent, monday at midnight, caught by their surveillance camera. >> they eat the grubs, and they argue with each other and run around. it's crazy. >> reporter: the christiansons aren't alone. the pigs have gone hog wild on many lawns in the neighborhood. >> every morning, i wake up and look at my yard to see if they've hit any part of it. >> reporter: this damage is the worst he's seen. there was a sighting of 20 pigs together at one time.

>> little ones, big ones, all mixed up, roaming across the cul de sac over there. >> reporter: homeowners suspect the food source has dried up, and they're venturing down in the neighborhood. the pigs haven't taken the bait. >> i just got off the phone with him. i contacted him. >> reporter: this man says the california department of fish andd wildlife is sending him some paperwork that will allow the county to come capture the pig. >> christianson says the pigs don't appear to be aggressive toward people. >> they're sliding sideways, and just trying to get away. they haven't been back since that night, but they will be back. >> reporter: that's why neighbors say they won't repair the lawns for now. they're waiting to see if authorities will remove the pigs from this area soon. reporting live in san ramon, amber lee, ktvu, channel 2 news. a sharply divided richmond city council voted early this morning to take over mortgages

of homeowners at risk of foreclosure. by a vote of 4-3 the council approved a plan to explore involving other cities in the joint powers authority to acquire homes with underwater mortgages, possibly with the use of eminent domain. a federal court is set to rule tomorrow on a lawsuit to block the plan. that lawsuit was brought by wells-fargo and deutsche bank. the parents of the 49er fan who fell to his death at the game last weekend say their son was a lifetime fan, and was enjoying the game with his brother when he died. he died sunday after he fell from the jamestown walkway. this is kevin on the right, with his brother jeff. his parents tell ktvu they are now preparing for the burial of one son, and the marriage of the other. hayes was scheduled to be the best man at his brother's wedding this weekend. new information tonight on a story we have been following

remember those who lost their lives. >> this evening, hundreds of people showed up for the dedication of the napa 9/11 memorial garden. >> it's kind of emotional. i believe that all americans should stop and take a moment on 9/11 to remember. >> chris did just that, bringing his 6-year-old son jacob to napa's new memorial garden. this labor of love took hundreds of people, thousands of hours and four years to complete. one of the hardest parts, getting these 30 tons of steel from new york to napa. >> further back are two more remnant pieces that act as a gateway into the memorial park. >> that gateway leads to these panels of glass, each honoring the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives in the towers, the planes, the pentagon, and those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. >> all the victims names, including the first responders, and there's also a narrative about the event.

reached. today union leaders accuse management of fighting safety restrictions. denying raising the issue of safety is a ploy to deflect attention. >> the public does not have to suffer that loss. the easy, sometimes for the public to say, this is just a smoke screen. >> the union provided photos to illustrate some of their safety concerns. a bart spokesperson says they have addressed the transit. a bill that would raise the state's minimum wage. brown said the minimum wage has not kept pace with riding costs. the bill would raise the minimum wage from $8 to $9 next

breaking news out of south san francisco where a caltran struck and killed a passenger. it happened near dubuque. a person was on the tracks at the station when they were hit. the train was not a regularly scheduled train, it was being moved south for use during the morning commute and there were no passengers onboard. this is also the second death just today on caltrain tracks. the first happened just after 2:00 p.m. in bellmont. caltran is working to get a bus to shuttle people from bay shore to san bruno. new video tonight from walnut creek, that's where police are working to find out who broke into a fire station and stole wedding rings, cash, and other items while firefighters were battling the

morgan fire. this morning, technicians were dusting for fingerprints. the burglary brought more than just police to the fire station today, as john sasaki reports, news of the theft touched many people in the community who are now reaching out to help the firefighters. >> we all appreciate you fighting the fire on mount mount diablo, because we all saw it. >> reporter: they came to station 7 with three things on their minds. >> started with 9/11, then the fire, and we heard they got broken into. >> reporter: they were burglarized while fighting the fire on mount diablo. >> we decided to bake them a bunch of cookies, our favorite. >> they didn't have to, to show us our support, and of course it makes you feel better. >> reporter: fire officials say

they've taken unspecified steps to increase security here and at other stations. >> where in the past you really didn't have to worry about being extremely secure at a fire station or a fire department facility, people were a little more trustworthy. in this day and age, apparently that's not the case anymore. >> reporter: new security had already been in the works, because the facility on tree boulevard has been burglarized ten times over the past two or three years. >> we're going to have to raise the level of security at even some of our staffed stations now. >> reporter: firefighters say they've received food donations. berkely police made an arrest with the city's third homicide of the year.

dustin bynum was found suffering from several gunshot wounds. police say they arrested 23- year-old krisnev feraira. a judge ruled a former superintendent must pay more than $2.5 million in restitution to the wood side elementary school district. the money was used for school remodeling work. he was also convicted of embezzling more than $100,000 from the portola valley school district when he was superintendent there. he is currently serving a two year prison sentence. the help wanted sign is out in san jose from top city officials to police officers. plenty of jobs are opening up. ktvu's robert honda explains why all of those vacancies could add up to a crisis in leadership. >> reporter: san jose mayor

chuck reed and other city leaders are facing a tough, yet familiar situation these days. as we reported yesterday, debra pagoni announced she will retire by december. with the city looking for a new police chief, a new fear chief, and the mayor in his last term, many residents we talked to say san jose always seems to be in a state of flux. >> you kind of wonder what's happening in the city, and whether maybe we should be packing up too and heading out. >> he still believes they can fill the chief and fire positions before she leaves. >> i think we've been talking about the police chief and the fire chief positions for a while now. >> reporter: other councilmembers say they don't think it will cause major problems if she doesn't. >> i'm very confident they'll help us through the transition. >> i think the transition now is best for the organization. the staff is great that i'm leaving behind. they won't miss a beat. >> reporter: the police

officers union seas the departure as more trouble ahead. >> i'm very concerned that some of the most talented people in the city are leaving, and attracting and keeping talented people working in san jose is something that we're not able to do. >> reporter: some residents say they're just hoping for the best. >> anytime you can bring someone in with some fresh ideas, it's always great. >> reporter: with so much at stake, her last few months could be the most intense of her public career. in san jose, robert honda, ktvu, channel 2 news. the san francisco giants fan who admitted tossing a banana toward a black player is in legal trouble. 37-year-old alexander pollides was arrested as a fugitive wanted for drug and theft charges. a month ago, he tossed a banana toward adam jones.

the dow gained 135 points, but the nasdaq dropped 4, dragged down by tech stocks. so far apple is not getting the buzz over its new iphones. some analysts said it is not priced low enough for emerging markets such as china, and it doesn't have enough innovations and the screen is not larger. this sent apple stocks down. they fell yesterday as well, after being up 11% in the last month. oakland based internet company pandora announced a new chief executive officer. mcandrews recently led aquantive. the news brought pandora stock up in after hours trading. pope francis admitted once

of those lost by united 93 were among those who gathered to remember the victims of terrorist attacks. red granite stones bear the names of the passengers and crew at the flight 93 memorial. jack lost his wife lauren on the plane. >> she was three months pregnant with our child. she called from the plane. it was a strong message. that's what this memorial means to me. >> flight 93 was on its way from new jersey to san francisco. as fresh as the events of 9/11 seemed to many of us, there are some so young they don't remember, or weren't even born 12 years ago during the attacks. how that difficult history lesson is taught. >> reporter: there are some lessons kids learn from books,

new at 10:00, signs of life on a stretch of san francisco's market street, that had long been given up for dead, but twitter moved in about a year ago, and activity has picked up. how high-tech is helping the city's economy. ken? >> reporter: jewel, the old san francisco furniture mart opened up in 1937, the same year as the golden gate bridge. now it and the entire mid- market neighborhood are undergoing a transformation, thanks in part to twitter. it's the end of the day shift for twitter employees who tell us they can't talk to us on camera. >> they're in their head phones, and they walk. >> so that's a twitter person.

>> yeah, that's a twitter person. >> it definitely does feel kind of forgotten, sandwiched between the two most popular parts of the city. >> reporter: a major high rise apartment building is under construction across the street from twitter. rents ranged from 2800 to $6,700 a month. >> they don't seem to match with the area at all. i could be paying the same, and live in a much better neighborhood. >> reporter: twitter and other high-tech companies are having a major effect on the city's economy. it shows tech jobs support 65% of local services jobs. 900 jobs at quitter create 18 professional jobs, and 1700 non- professional jobs. phillip opened this cafe before twitter moved in. >> it was really tough in the beginning, when i moved in

here, there was nobody here. >> reporter: now it is one of the trending gathering spots for the mid-market tech crowd. >> honestly, i don't think i would be in business without twitter being here. without all of these other companies move in. >> reporter: the down side, is the higher rents can drive out long time residents who can't afford to stay. we called, and tweeted twitter for a response, but didn't hear back, not even a tweet. it seems data bears out that old saying, the rich get richer. that's awe cording to uc berkely researchers. they said the top 10% of income earnsk took home over half of the in income last year. researchers say the top 1% of earners have nearly rebounded since the great recession. meantime, the other 99% have seen their incomes grow less

than half a percent during that same time. a bill on assault weapons passed the state assembly today, and is now headed to governor brown. the bill would ban the kits that convert guns to assault type weapons. it's a loophole on california's ban on those types of weapons. it's one of three gun control measures before the governor, but no word whether he'll sign it. new rules for fracking are expected to pass the state senate tomorrow, and governor brown plans to sign them. fracking is the procedure where water, sand, and chemicals are forced deep into the earth to release natural gas and oil. the bill would require drillers to disclose what chemicals they use, obtain permits, and notify nearby homeowners. environmentalists say the rules don't go far enough. we've got fog out there right now, and that marine layer really deepened out overnight, and into this morning. that's why temperatures were quite a bit cooler today.

so with that very deep marine layer over 2,000 feet, temperatures took a hit. down further. we had triple digit heat just a couple of days ago. some areas almost 30 degrees cooler than two days ago. they've got to warm up tomorrow by a few degrees. so slightly warmer tomorrow. when you get going, temperatures and cloud cover are going to be pretty much like we had this morning, which means clouds for most of the bay area. temperatures around the bay are all in the mid-60s, that's how you know the moist air is everywhere. it's 63 in san francisco. 64 in fairfield. you don't see a big disparity. the cool, most air has basically infiltrated all nine bay areas. lots of upper 50s and low 60s, as we head into thursday, and the story is going to be thursday, friday, slightly warmer. friday is the warmest day. and i say, friday will probably get into the low 90s, maybe mid- 90s, thursday will be a few

degrees warmer, then look who shows up. deepens the marine layer, perhaps morning drizzle. the not a deal breaker. just not going to be as warm as we've been seeing, and certain not as warm as we're going to see. friday will be the warmest day in this forecast. temperatures warm. 90s in those inland bay valleys, those are the hot spots. sacramento, modesto, and stockton. most of us are in the oranges and yellows. along the coast, 50s and 60s most of the day. in oakland, downtown, you start out at 60 degrees. cloudy. lunchtime, still cloudy. partly cloudy, partly sunny in the afternoon. 74degrees for a daytime high in downtown oakland. 80 in napa. 90 in clear lake. 89 in vacaville. these numbers are slightly warmer than they were. quality is good, that smoke is a discontaminate memory.

all night. 22 hits. coco hit the foul pole. that was his 19th homer. yoenis cespedes starting to get in the act. 3 rbi's. this is a two run double in a 10 run 4th inning. the a's batted for 35 minutes. the capper to that inning, steve boat. talk about leaving the yard literally, over the bleachers out there. two run shot. 18-3. and the a's now go three up on the texas rangers. late june, the giants had to reboot the mission you might say. forget about a world series repeat, just stay out of the basement. they take another series. this one against the rockies, down 3-2 to colorado in the 8th, a stroke for marco scutaro. that will tie things up, and brandon belt, he had the game winning hit on monday. cashes in the game winner again, by going to left field.

nice stroke. angel pagan, comes in to score. 4-3 giants. a teachable moment for one of baseball's great young talents, you might say. miami pitcher, hernandez had words with brian mccann at the plate. then hit a home run and admired it. when he comes across the plate, mccann and he get into a rather heated environment. benches cleared. after the game, hernandez apologized. said it was a dumb thing to do, it will never happen again. the collision of the two unbelievable.
