they're called side shows and it gets extremely bad on the weekend nights when officers target the side shows. amber lee has the story. >> reporter: that driver deliberately rammed his car into two polices. in one case right into the passenger's side. is he now faces a charge of assault with deadly weapon. this did show took place at 2:00 am last saturday. officers repeatedly answered calls to the incident. >> the officers went to pull over the car. the car pulled over. when the officer got out of the car the car immediately reversed. >> reporter: listen closely and you can hear the sounds of the mustang crashing. >> he intentionally rammed both cars trying to get away. he was able to get out but i think his car became immobile.

23-year-old alden smith has made his mark as the linebacker. but today the focus was on the marks he made. tires spinning so long that they dug a half foot hole into the front yard of this woman's. >> the biggest hole is the back wheel. >> reporter: the back wheel. >> reporter: neighbors say that they saw smith hunched over his head. but when neighbors turned up, he asked them who they were and what had happened. marijuana was found in the truck. after practice today coach jim harbaugh commented but had no public reprimand. >> disappointed and you know felt like he needs to go to work. face his teammates and let's all get through it. >> reporter: this was smith's

asking if you think alden smith should play in sunday's game. visit ktvu on facebook and join the conversation. now to san francisco where police are searching for a gunman who opened fire this afternoon on a city street. police responded to reports of shots fired about 3:30 this afternoon on kirkwood avenue near earl street in the hunters point neighborhood. bullets shattered the windows of several cars but there are no reports of injuries. students and teachers at near by malcolm x elementary school were told to shelter in place for about an hour. new information about yesterday's shooting in the potrero housing. two were shot as they were sitting in a car. she remains hospitalized and is said to be in stable condition tonight. at this point no arrests haven been made. a nuwark man was killed today when he was run over by a large earth moving at a

construction site. it happened just before 1:00 this afternoon at flagship and club drive. the 51-year-old victim was part of a survey crew grading the site for future homes. police say a man driving a scraper was making a u turn and didn't see the victim. he later looks back and saw the worker on the ground. the man was pronounced dead at the scene. calosha is investigating. governor jerry brown signed a bill accomplishing the first state rule for the controversial oil procedure named as fraking. fraking is breaking ground to free up oil and natural gas. opponents say it pollutes ground water. new york state has declared a moratorium. here in california, fraking

will have a huge operation. the first rain in some time is in the bay area forecast for tomorrow. and it is throwing the wine crush a curve. right now the napa sonoma grape harvest is in full swing. vineyards say it's not just the moisture but what follows that really matters, deborah villalon has the story. >> reporter: we're surrounded by cabernet. if these grapes get a rinsing, it's not bad as long as a breeze comes along to dry them off. but when moisture sits and it's humid the fruit suffers. >> get in there and you can feel the thermal mass in there. >> reporter: these pinot noir grapes have been sitting for weeks. but with the fermentation now

shirokawa. the lead judge has recused himself. that's dispute the defense claiming it violates a previous plea deal. shirokawa is due back in court next week and new judges will be assigned to both cases. california's unemployment rate rose last month for the second month in a row. in august it was 8.9% that is slightly lower than the 8.7% in july. this also comes despite california adding 29,000 jobs in august. the discrepancy may be because people who have been out of work for so long that they weren't counted anymore started looking for jobs again and showed up in these new numbers. bay area counties faired better than the rest of the state for the month of august. marin county had the lowest rate again. it was 5%. solano was the highest at 8.2%. the rest range from 5.2 to

7.4%. target stores say they plan to hire 70,000 new workers. that's actually a drop of 20% compared to last year. target says the numbers are down because a lot of permanent employees asked if they could work extra hours. last year 1/3 of its holiday hires ended up with full time jobs. police sent us these pictures of some of the graffiti at fox elementary school at st. james school. several outbuildings, tables and playground equipment were tagged. fox elementary had just done extensive remodel this summer. the district has been considering a median barrier for 16 years to reduce head on collisions. the movable concrete and steel

barrier is expected to cost about $26 million and the bridge district says it may have to raise tolls to pay for it. it's scheduled to be installed in october of next year and will require closing the bridge for about 52 hours. two young boys are -- what led to the break in the case. >> reporter: investigators have been trying to track down the shooters in this case. when one of them showed up -- up at the police station this morning. he is young and says his partner is even younger. authorities say at least 12 cars were hit by a barrage of bbs that punctured doors and shattered windows. it happened wednesday on highway 101. this morning, a teenager
