police beef up security inside at&t park and outside tonight after another case of team rivalry gone horribly wrong. good evening i'm ken somerville. >> and i'm julie haener. fans observed a moment of silence after a 24-year-old man dressed in dodger blue was stabbed to death last night. this picture shows the victim,

jonathan denver outside of the park after he was killed. his father is a security guard at the stadium. they had just emerged from a bar at 11:40 when there was some kind of argument with a group of giant fans. officers say the group tangled and then broke it off. but then there was a second confrontation and he was stabbed and died. we begin at the ballpark with ktvu's john sa ka -- sasaki and the extra security. >> reporter: it was the worse possible outcome for any sports fan and it had a dark cloud

hanging over the dodger game. police said they would keep a close watch on everyone's safety. >> we're always bumped up for the dodger series but we're doing a little bit more on the outside of the ballpark for the neighborhood to make sure that when people are leaving they feel safe. >> reporter: they added plain clothed officers and some on motorcycles. as they left, it was no doubt that the death was in the minds of players minds. >> it's really saturday. we take this as serious as anybody. and but it's, when it comes down to it it is just a game. >> reporter: state assembly perez who is a dodger fan from los angeles was also on the field. >> i think it's appalling to everyone in the state that we've seen a couple of indenses on these kind of violence, our minds are with the victim's

family. >> reporter: but the healthy rivalry continues. >> they're welcoming. look at this guy he has his arm around me. he loves me. >> we're treating everybody right. >> every game that we've been to with the dodgers and giants has never come to that. >> reporter: this dodger fan brought his 10-year-old twins to the game. his daughter a giant game, his son a dodger fan. >> it's fun, because it's never quiet at home. that's how it should be. no matter what. >> reporter: now is the time when things go bad. we'll show you how this crowd out here is behaving. john sasaki, ktvu news. more details now, police did make an arrest. they identified the suspect as 21-year-old michael montgomery of lodi. he says he talked to his son by phone and that phopbt father

-- montgomery said he stabbed denver after denver hit him over the head with a chair. investigators are also looking for twod additional men who fled the fight on foot. all of this is reminiscent of bryan stow. he's the bay area paramedic that will never be the same after he was tragically beaten. the stow family sent ktvu a text today it says quote we are horrified and deeply saddened by this senseless about of violence. our thoughts and prayers go out to the family. the giants released a statement it says many part, we want to be clear that there is absolutely no place in our community for this type of senseless violence. and a statement from the dodgers says there's no rational explanation for this senseless act which resulted in jonathan's death. the pain that this has caused his family and friends is unimaginable. words are not enough to describe our sadness.

>> we spoke to the social psychologists about how sports fans can turn fanatical and violence. she told us alcohol is often a contributing factor but it goes beyond that. >> we become passionate about our teams when we're winning. this is why we will wear hats and shirts that are associated with our teams when they're doing well. this is called basking in our glory. >> reporter: the fans can become so involved in the game that our mood can reflect on whether the team is winning or losing. jonathan's friend did warn him to be careful and said john

just shrugged it off as most people did because after all, he was just going to ball game. >> he was just a warm kind person. >> reporter: matt gomes is a long time friend of matthew. >> he's just always fun, no instigator or anything. >> reporter: they live together here in the north coast and were celebrating rob's uncoming birthday by meeting their dad for the game. all of them lifelong dodger fans. >> i gave him a big warning before because i knew what happened down a couple of years ago. in the giants versus l. a. and it was, i just never thought that would happen. >> i don't understand who could even do that over giants or

dodgers it's ridiculous. >> reporter: gazela orneaz is a long time matthew denver friend. denver had worked here for two years apprenticing to become a plumber. >> this morning i was with when i got off work i was with his brother and his mom actually, and it was very hard. >> i've been around them and stuff, always milo smiling, laughing. always. joking around. always you know always making people laugh. >> reporter: in this community of 7,000 people it seems everyone is connected someone and john denver was known by many. his brother has told friends the first scuffle was other their dodgers gear, the second deadly altercation was in fact, an ambush by the attackers and that denver was defending a friend. >> he just was a fighter or something like that. he was there defending a friend that got jumped by six guys. and the friend got knocked out

and that's the result of everything. is the death of my friend. >> reporter: off camera, denver's boss at the heating and plumbing shop describes him at a good the worker, a good person. and denver's mother is in town and she's grieving tonight. there's lots of expressions of support out here for her as well. denver was arrested for driving under the influence in july. and public records show denver's driving driver's license was revoked this year for previous dui. a ktvu weather alert tonight, a red flag warning is posted as high winds bring an elevated risk of fire.

the flags atop 505 montgomery at this hour. bill martin is tracking this condition and how long this warning will last. >> reporter: the winds tonight, the flags are more sea level so they weren't blown as hard. that's where the red flag warning resides. wind gusts could go 25 to 35 miles per hour. main winds will pick up maybe three, four, five, six in the morning. the red flag warnings not about temperatures, it's not about humidity is about these winds that could get going fairly strong. you see fairfield starts to go to the north. the winds are mainly north. they should shift a little bit northeast. when we come back we'll talk about that red flag warning, it's going to be warmer tonight. it's going to be warmer than it is tonight here too. firefighters in contra costa county attacked a brush fire this afternoon in lafayette. we could see smoke from our traffic camera. the grass fire started at

around 2:30 today. calfire sent a full response including fire fighting aircraft but that was cancelled after firefighters managed to contain the fire. and people who live in this neighborhood say several trees have fallen recently and last night several thousand customers in the east bay lost power. we have new information tonight about the killing of a student from san francisco state. police now say he was shot in the back and that the attack was unprovoked. also today, police showed off two assault weapons, combat knives and survival gear that they discovered from the home of the suspect. investigators are saying he shot valdez as the 20-year-old student was getting off a

b.a.r.t. train. police say they are relieved they have arrested the suspect when they did because they say the suspect may have been planning a much larger attack. >> we're just glad nothing played out other than it did. but that doesn't do us any good with poor mr. valdez. >> police say several other people claimed the suspect pulled guns on them. as for the weapon, police are trying to determine if he acquired them legally. his friend say he was a special person. amber-- >> reporter: frank, justin valdez has lots of friends here at the university of san francisco. his friends say his life may have been short but his vision for the future lives on. >> he was all about love and happiness. >> reporter: valdez is described as an eternal

a neighborhood in san jose has been plagued by gas leaks for more than a week. and it's made life difficult for people who live there. maureen naylor live at the oak street estates near 237 to tell us when their last wait for gas service will finally be over. maureen. >> reporter: frank for the ninth straight night the properties here do not have the natural gas service. but we learned there is a time line to end this long going outage. for more than a week this tree lined community has been

anything but serene. >> this is day number eight. >> reporter: day number eight turned into night number nine. tonight was another night without a working stove, oven or hot water. they question the property managers response. >> but i just don't understand why they don't have people working constantly to get this back in order. >> reporter: pg & e told us the mobile home park owns the equipment and is responsible for the repairs. the utility also said it found several extra repairs today. just as the utility crews were leaving tonight. the utility told us that they were able to make repairs. a company that showed up to

make repairs were told they were not longer needed. >> they said they that longer wanted the showers. so we're getting turned around. >> i am happy to tell you pg & e just restored your service. >> yay. >> reporter: the celebration was short lived because of this. more than 160 gas meters throughout the property intentionally disabled during the repairs. >> we will be turning the gas back on. >> reporter: tonight on that recorded message, the company announced it will be repairing the equipment tomorrow morning and relighting the pilots on. and will be restoring the power by tomorrow afternoon, maureen naylor, ktvu news.

a second grade student helped students with their staar test. the school will now have its api ranking for this year revoked. james logan high school in union and vallejo high school also reported violations. animal control officers recommended the dogs be euthanized but the owners appealed a decision. a board made up of antioch residents took minutes to endorse the city's recommendation. the owners have five days now to appeal the court's decision. the latest report on the job's front is promising. the labor department says the number of americans applying for first time unemployment benefits dropped 5,000 to 305,000. that is the lowest in six years which was three months before

the recession began. analysts say the numbers reflect more hiring and fewer lay offs. encouraging news about jobs help reverse a losing streak on wall street today. the dow gained 15 points. well the country is moving closer to that government shut down and republicans and the president are standing firm tonight on their positions. president obama told supporters in maryland he won't budge on his signature health care reform. >> i will not negotiate on anything when it comes to the full safe and credit of the united states of america. >> the president says i'm not going to negotiate. well, i'm sorry but it just doesn't work that way. >> reporter: the senate has to

pass a temporary funding bill. it will then go to the house for approval and then back to the senate. lawmakers have until 9:00 p.m. pacific time monday to do this. california's program offering affordable health insurance is set to launch next tuesday october 1st. today we got our first look at the website for covered california. ken pritchett says some people in line to enroll still don't know how much it's going to cost them. >> can you put this under your tongue for me please. >> reporter: michael is a student who can't afford traditional health insurance. we met him at st. angelo health care. >> i have a knee injuries from a previous bike accident. >> a lot of times our clients,

progress or lack there of. face to face negotiations are expected to resume tomorrow. police in fremont released a sketch of a man wanted for kidnapping and robbing a woman at gunpoint. he's described as a middle eastern male in his mid-20s, 5'5". the incident happened outside the woman's condo in the warms spring area. the man ordered her into her car then told her to drive a short distance. he then robbed her and took off. fortunately the woman was not hurt. as sergeant ken cratt went upon his duties, a lieutenant tweeted his every move.

he was taking questions about tweets from people of excuses to get out of a ticket. the department is doing these tweet campaigns to generate more followers that way they can use social media in the future in the event of an emergency. toyota announced a recall of hundreds of thousands of mini vans because of a problem that has led to two injuries. the recall involves 615,000sienna mini vans. there for the year's 2004 and 2005. from 2007 through 2009. toyota says the vehicles can shift out of park and roll away. it's received reports of 21 accidents and two injuries. pesticides in the produce meat. tonight we put fruits and vegetables to the test. >> the idea is to take the mystery out of what's in your produce. how to know that the food you're eating is safe.

back now to tonight's giants game and the beefed up security in place following last night's deadly stabbing of a giant fan not far from at&t park. continuing coverage from john sasaki he's been asking fans leaving the game tonight if they're going to change any of their habits, john. >> reporter: frank it's very quite unclear. i talked to people earlier that told me maybe a little bit. i'll tell you what the game has been over for 35 minutes and people have been migrating home or in the neighborhood around here. these folks are waiting to see their favorite players leave for the evening. and this is typically when things get a little more rowdy after some alcohol has been consumed. after the killing of jonathan denver, brandon crawford told me that some people definitely need to tone down their alcohol

consumption. fans and one of the coaches described concern. >> it made me wondering about wearing something down in l.a. i never thought it would happen in san francisco. >> i am not going to change my behavior, we're very friendly of people coming in. it's a poor representation. >> to think that they're in dodger garb and they're giant fans, it make turns your stomach. >> reporter: as fans are here watching their favorite players leave. the crowd really did seem quite calm. everybody seeming to get along very, very well with each other. giant fan, dodger fans. trying to get along perhaps

well mannered. new at 10:00, police have been investigating a number of women who may have been drugged with a date rape drug. in both cases the women said they woke up hours later and found out they had been assaulted. the owner of the bar says she is adding surveillance cameras. in tonight's special report, ktvu's john fowler tells us about the surprise inspections and what we uncovered when we did our own testing. >> reporter: just after dawn, san francisco's bustling wholesale produce market. 30 companies over a half billion dollars in vegetables and fruit every year. bound for restaurants and

stores across the bay area. food safety, it's mostly trust. >> yes. our vendors we trust them. >> reporter: but should you. we discovered what some call a hidden secret on most of the produce you bought. our cameras were there for this prize inspection. >> nice to meet you my name is alberto. >> reporter: alberto marin experienced eye selecting produce as carefully as any shopper. but he and his team are looking for hidden danger. all the produce here looks good. the problem is it's not something you can see. it's only revealed by testing. >> we're going to do a sampling of tomatoes here. >> reporter: this random and unannounced test just part of a system to keep your food safe. >> you're supposed to get produce from across the countries as well that's where we tend to find some of the problems. >> reporter: the state says

usually about 20% of the samples have pesticides. >> we will final produce have pesticides beyond the legal limit about 20% of the time. >> reporter: the state fined one watsonville strawberrygoer for intentionally using an illegal pesticides on his entire crop. pesticides benefits outweigh any risks but even small legal amounts can add unacceptably. this is pesticide legal analyst kristin schafer. >> there's some risks over there and having produce that have more than what we accept

here. >> reporter: we wanted to find out what was in the produce samples. investigators bagged, tags and took 18 samples for advanced analysis. at a special state laboratory. testing 3,600 samples a year costing about $1,000 each not paid by taxpayers but by fees on pesticides use in california. we saw each of the samples chopped and pureed. then chemicals that will test for chemicals. our results 15 of 18 samples, 83% positive for pesticides. that's double what's expected. although none exceeded federal standards. the highest california grown oranges a little over 1/3 of limit for a fungicide. three of four samples lower

an investigation is under way at an east bay elementary school where a kin -- kindergartner was injured on the playground. >> reporter: at the elementary school there was no sign of a puppet house where a child was injured. >> her mom was with her when i arrived. her mom was able to calm her certainly. she was you know she was conscious and when she was

taken, when she was transported. >> reporter: teachers were alerted through e-mail and phone that a ambulance was present at the school. >> i know the school has always had really good supervision. so curious of what happened. >> reporter: the district superintendent say it is district does not know if the child fell or exactly how she was injured but they are investigating. administrators have now put the equipment on storage. >> we certainly went out and did a survey of the area where children play to make sure that there was nothing that would pose a safety risk for a student at this point. we believe the playground area is now secure and children are able to play there. >> reporter: we have been unable to reach the girl's family. district officials tell us they too are waiting to hear from the girl's parents to see how she is do -- she is doing.

they did tell us the girl's classmates sent get well cards. federal prosecutors say eric and ryan jensen are responsible for contributing contaminated melons. the brothers pled not guilty. the fda determined the melons were not cleaned properly in a packing house that had dirty water on the floor and old hard to clean equipment. secretary of state john kerry met with iran in the first talks between the two nations since 1979. kerry noted this is just the first step. the u.s. broke ties with iran after the u.s. embassy was taken over in 1979 and 52 american hostages were held for 444 days.

this. california follows new york and hawaii in extending these overtime benefits to domestic help. >> reporter: amidst the crowd chatting overwine, a group of women, housekeepers and home care givers quietly celebrated their own victory. >> i'm a single mother. and i work and clean houses. >> reporter: maria ibarra is a san francisco mother of three who cleans houses five days a week. >> i need to have time to eat, i need to have time to rest. i need to have time in case i get sick. >> reporter: ibarra was honored tonight for helping to pass bill 229 which governor brown posted tonight. they work more than nine hours a day or 45 hours a week. >> domestic workers are excluded from overtime pay currently under federal law. and the california domestic

worker bill of rights gives them that over time pay. >> reporter: emila was close to tears. a widow who is still works because she needs to support her family. >> they give me only $1,000 a month. >> reporter: and there is a question of enforcement. >> the numbers of investigators who dofield investigation are just over 60 throughout the entire state. >> reporter: the bill does not cost bills or babysitters that are under the age of 18. reporting live in berkeley, jana katsuyama, ktvu channel 2 news. a bill to legalize marijuana may be put on the ballot.

it will decriminalize the use, cultivation and sale of marijuana and hemp. and the legislature and it would instruct the legislature to pass laws to tax and regulate the plant. supporters have 150 days to collect the nearly 505,000 signatures needed to get that measure put on the november ballot. voters rejected a similar initiative in 2010. dianne feinstein is proposing legislation to limit but not stop the collection of the public's phone data. tine feinstein says she wants to increase the the data collected by her agency. the public only learned about the nsa's program through the leaks by former contractor edward snowden. governor brown signed add bill into law that allows court order to interrupt cell service.

the decision comes after b.a.r.t. disrupted service. the state law will preempt local policies and it takes effect in october of next year. still fog along the coast right now. no fog today to speak of. a nice day at the beach today. a nice day at the beach tomorrow. there the clear skies we're talking about. the red flag warning of course remains in effect. it's not just for our area it's all the way down to king city. basically the west coast north of certainly north of the santa barbara area. the winds are going to start doing something like this and that creates a higher fire danger. that also creates strong wind blowing through the hill at that angle. the temperatures outside right now. we have 50s. we have low 60s as well. it's nice out there. before you notice the days are getting shorter, the nights are starting to get longer. we're starting to see some 40s show up on the overnight low. the wind are showing up right

now, they're variable. the winds are nothing like they were last night this time last night they were howling kind of out of the north-northwest. but tonight we're seeing a switch. so as they calm down we're going to see them come a little more northeast , so that will give you strong winds up in the higher elevation. sea level, the air sinks. this pattern happens every time this time of year. it happens multiple times as we go into the fall months as the air sinks we get a red flag warning. we get these a lot this time of year and we will continue to see some. tomorrow's temperature spread, lots of 70s. there's no a big microclimate change. sometimes the warmest temperatures are going to be found right along the bay and at the coast. this is the forecast for tomorrow temperature wise 70s

and low 80s. 79 in fairfield. 79 at walnut creek. a couple of 80s in the brentwood area. 80 in morgan hill. 80 in gilroy then along the coast plenty of sunshine. temperatures in the 60s and even low 70s. so the five day forecast fridays warming up. saturdays warming up a little bit more. as we go into friday we're looking for temperatures as i mentioned start to warm from what they were today. the winds die down a little bit in the afternoon. by late in the afternoon the winds are gown and we move into a bay area weekend that is marked with a little bit of warming. as you get into monday you get a chance for a shower perhaps which should be interesting so we'll be watching that for you. in the meantime a nice looking weekend ahead. >> that weekend does look good. >> it looks like a good weekend. mark is here now. the wind they needed came tonight. >> even this early in the season. feeling the heat a little bit.
