to go until the midnight deadline. jana katsuyama is live in oakland she's been talking to me forbe kwraeu tors and joins us now with a progress report, jana. julie, i want to let you know that just in the past two minutes both sides have been walking out of the door. we have josie moody and antoinnet bryant. they say they've wrapped up their talks today after an exchange of ideas which they're going to go back and analyze before they come back tomorrow morning to continue these talks. the bottom line. what i'm hearing from both sides, there's been progress it has just been really, really slow. about 100 union members and supporters marched down oakland's grand avenue and their message was loud and clear. but negotiators on both sides appear to be making some

concessions and exchanges proposals. >> we've sat down with the districts and i think we've made minimal progress. >> i think there has been a change in the tone of negotiations we'll see how it goes. >> reporter: b.a.r.t.'s lead negotiator returned from dinner and told us. >> i think we can get it done tonight if everybody wanted to. >> reporter: hoch says that progress has been denied. meaning both unions must reach agreement before dealing with the transit agency. >> it makes it very cumbersome to move anything in the right direction. >> reporter: the state's former chief mediator who helped with the b.a.r.t.'s 2009 talks say negotiators are feeling pressure. >> both sides are thinking, whatever we come out here with we have to recommend it to our

salmonella appear to be drug resistant which may explain the high rate of contamination. now here are the three usda codes to look for on packages of foster farm chicken. p6137. p6137a. and p7632. the usda says the chicken is safe to eat if handled properly and cooked to an internal temperature of at least 160 degrees. the white house says president obama is planning to nominate janet yelen as chairwoman of the federal reserve. the official announcement is set for tomorrow. she would be the first woman to be head of the federal reserve.

yellen's appointment requires a nomination. it appears the woman who went missing from her hospital room never actually left the hospital ground. a janitor found a body today in a seldom used stairwell. just before 5:00 the san francisco medical examiner took away the body found in a stairwell at san francisco general hospital. the body of a woman once found at about 10:00 a.m. in what hospital officials say is a rarely used exterior stairway. a hospital worker told ktvu employees at first believed they found a mannequin at the bottom of the stairwell. >> the person is deceased and the san francisco sheriff's department is leading the investigation with assistance of the san francisco police department. >> reporter: a source closely

involved in the investigation told ktvu it is the body of 57- year-old lin spalding the with who disappeared from her hospital room 17 days ago after checking in for a possible bladder infection. she was last seen by her family saturday september 20th. >> two friends, her boyfriend and her best friend came to visit her at around 11:00 a.m. on saturday morning. and were told she had disappeared as of 30 minutes previous. >> reporter: worried family and friends built a website to help find her. >> someone has died in a mysterious fashion here at san francisco general. an institution that is known for healing. tonight i'm sure the staff is horrified and confused. i'm sure the family is horrified and confused. >> reporter: the hospital police is in charge of the investigation. discovering why the woman died and if anything should have been done or could have been

members of an fbi task force swarmed all over a home on quarry street. ken wayne is live and tells what the fbi found. >> reporter: petaluma police and the fbi just wrapped up the search. this investigation has been going for over 30 hours and some maybes are still wondering what is going on. the fbi spent part of the night digging up the front lawn where an explosive was detonated.

when officers entered the house they found much more. >> upon looking for the firearm, they noticed an explosive device, they immediately backed out. called the sonoma county bomb squad. >> reporter: four devices were found. the bomb squad safely detonated two which police say contained explosives. this you tube video listed under the suspect's name features homemade fireworks. black powder was also found in the home. >> a little suspicious? >> very. we have been for a long time. we kind of wondered. it's been about 15 years. >> reporter: the fbi was called in including members of the terrorism task force. >> we call our reactionary squad. if there's any sort of explosives or an active shooter which isn't the case here. they would be the ones that

facilitating of the sale of drugs. today the fbi announced the arrests of more people. and they promise for arrests are coming. the fbi said silk road brokered more than $8 million in drug sales before they closed down the site. san leandro police say tips from the public helped them catch the suspect in a robbery. the attacker is 39-year-old charlie johnson of oakland. he is scheduled to be arraigned on a felony assault charge tomorrow. a photo showing the principal of an east bay high school holding a female student in a head lock has gone viral. as patti lee reports after the photo from pittsburg high was

right to suspend them. >> reporter: ashley johnson is the girl in the photograph. she claims her neck was injured. >> i wasn't fighting him back. i was just there on the ground. >> reporter: whitmire says he had to restrain johnson. johnson and the boy who shoved her will not be in school this week. in pittsburg, patti lee. police in oakland say a young woman killed after the city's first friday event last week was an innocent bystander who was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. police identified the woman at corin ray. family and friends refer to her as corin bailey. her family tonight remembered her as someone who was loved by many people and touched many lives. one of her former counselors described her as a sweetheart. a bright young woman interested in music and art. the shooting happened on

broadway near city hall. two other people were wounded. police say those two had gotten into an argument with a man who pulled out a gun and then opened fire into the crowd. the university of california's largest union has called for a strike for alleging unfair working conditions. the union represents 22,000 employees who provide staff support and medical services at uc hospitals. contract talks have been dead locked now for more than a year. the union says it wants better retirement entitlements and health care coverage. eight other unions have already agreed to wage and pension reforms. the university says esfumc is demanding they get paid less than others. and this system is dropping down from the north and as it

now to our continuing coverage of the government shutdown. here's a live picture of capitol hill where both sides insist they have to budge first. they're still unwilling to compromise. president obama said he called house speaker boehner and is willing to talk about a host of issues but only after they raise the debt ceiling. >> we're not going to pay a ransom for america to pay its bills. that's something that should be nonnegotiable and everybody should agree on that. >> moments later, boehner went to the microphone. >> the president said today if there's unconditional surrender

by republicans he'll sit down and talk to us. that's not the way our government works. >> reporter: boehner did say he is not ready to draw a line in the sand. later a congressman close to boehner said there may be a way to raise the debt ceiling while negotiations are under way. the lack of progress drove stocks lower again today. the dow industrials lost 159 points. nasdaq fell 75. the losses keep mounting as the shutdown drags on. and at least eight democratic members of the house were arrested for blocking the roadway. house speaker john boehner has refused to put the legislation

up for a vote. the cliff house closed last week then opened this week now it's closed once again. the cliff house restaurant sits on national parkland near land's end. he was forced to close last thursday due to the government shut down. but the restaurant owners then defined those orders and reopened yesterday and today. but now they decided to abide with the order. the owners told us the cliff house will remain closed until the government says it can reopen. two bay area companies have worked together to debut a new computer. hp and google unveiled the chrome book in new york city today. it's powered by a small usb cell phone charger. they're based entirely on the chrome web browser. meantime apple is reportedly getting to unveil new i pads in two weeks. the tech website all things d says there is an invitation only event on tuesday october

unemployment checks for thousands of people. eric rasmussen is here with questions about the company hired by the state to upgrade its system. >> reporter: frank massachusetts just fired the same company for problems with a new computer system for tax returns. today edd officials in sacramento told us they are aware some people are still going without benefits even though the department announced it cleared a backlog last week. >> reporter: she lives in one of the bay area's most affluent city, but laura beachi of buehrleing game is down to her last dollar. >> it makes me sick. we're just trying to get by until the next check comes. >> reporter: siachi said that she has not received a check. >> these were all the e-mails i sent that were never responded to by edd. >> reporter: officials say they fixed the glitch.

97,000 unique visits. alameda county wants to hire 100 workers to help people enroll on to medi-cal. the county says it needs the addition workers to handle calls at a center in downtown oakland. two historic buildings were destroyed today during a three alarm fire that broke out at a lumberyard in the south bay. you can see the damage here from news chopper 2. the fire in south san jose started at 7:45 this morning. ktvu's anne rubin tells us why firefighters say it could have been a whole lot worse. >> reporter: neighbors in coyote recorded this cell phone video before the fire trucks arrived. >> you have to have 50, 60-foot flames real quick. >> reporter: and crews had their work cut out for them.

there are no fire hydrants here. >> there is a poor water supply system in this area. but we know that. >> reporter: so they brought in water tenders and got to work. on one side since the pedula lumberyard, on the other three historic buildings according to their owner. >> this building was built in 1970. the building over there was built in 1968. >> reporter: one had been a train depot, the other a bunk house for railroad workers. firefighters were able to save all but the bunk house. >> i seen it an hour ago it was there. and i thought they were able to save it. they said that only the roof had caught on fire but they took it completely down. >> reporter: two more buildings at the lumberyard also burned though the lumber amazingly did not. >> i got a lot of my stuff left. just my office is gone. >> reporter: ringo too is thankful that not more history is gone. >> i can't thank them enough.

sunny vail to investigate why that day care did not shut down. juan carlos gonzalez had no idea that anything was amiss when he dropped off his child at the day care. >> it's really good. she loves the kids. she loves all the -- she's really fine. but i am in shock. i'm in shock. >> it's been here almost a year. it's been great for him. like i said, the people are great. >> reporter: investigators say jose cristobal velangria a relative of the owner who also lived in this house was arrested after a parent came forward with allegations of inappropriate touching. at least two children were abused say investigators. >> the children are five to 8 years old. they're elementary school aged children. and so the touching that was made was a sexual type of touching. >> reporter: neighbors tell us

68-year-old velandria was friendly and they would sometimes watch him walking with children to the park. >> i thought he was a good man. i don't know what happened inside. >> reporter: police want to hear from any parent worried that their child may be a victim. >> we are concerned that because this individual may have had access to those other children, that there may be other children who were inappropriately touched by this individual. >> reporter: we obtained state records showing child care inspectors found no major red flags over the last few years. the day care still has a valid license but an investigation is still under way. there's now a note out front saying no comment. the owner did not open the door when we stopped by earlier this afternoon to ask questions. the asiana pilots and airline told investigators the

automatic throttle may have malfunctioned. the investigator said they had not found any mechanical problem. and right since the beginning the ntsb said the plane was flying to slow and too low. a police the detective is due in court tomorrow in connection with the video taped attack of an suv driver. this video from last sunday shows bikers pounding on the vehicle. they eventually pulled out the driver and beat him up. the detective's attorney side his client only witnessed other bikers kicking and punching the vehicle at the scene. but there's now a video showing

an emotional message today from a woman nearly killed by a hit-and-run driver earlier this year. as ktvu's rob roth reports the woman hopes to put a human face on the many pedestrian accidents that happen in san francisco. >> reporter: she wrestled with her emotions as she wanted to speak. her walk to the podium was short but for hernandez, this

is something more than she ever wanted to endure. >> i plead with you to help me change some of the policies here in san francisco that concerns us all. >> reporter: martinez says she does not remember what happened before the impact. >> i was walking home with my friend and we were both hit by a car. my injuries were, i was severely injured. >> reporter: monique shattered her pelvis and suffered a brain injury. the uc berkeley neuroscience researchers spent four months in the hospital. the driver of the honda sped off and has not been caught. monique says that she expects to make a recovery but because of the hit-and-run, she has a bills into the million dollars.

last year there was 1,000 pedestrian accidents including 19 deaths. monique had suggestions. >> make sure all traffic signs are visible. >> reporter: the supervisors didn't respond but afterward monique said she felt she did some good. >> now i'm able to speak to people for san francisco. so i feel proud. >> reporter: in san francisco, rob roth, ktvu channel 2 news. new at 10:00, dozens of people demonstrated in san francisco tonight calling for the compassionate release of imprisoned attorney lin stewart. the rally was held on market. he was convicted of conspiring to attack the united nations and other u.s. landmarks. stewart is now facing a sentence that gives him 19 months to live.
