today's rain is the likely culprit. >> reporter: frank, that's right. that downed power line we're talk being is right up there behind me. pg and e crews i'm told are repairing it, by replacing it with spare parts. the good news is a half hour ago, a supervisor told me the order was given to resume all train service. he says it's safe, because the line has been secured. but it was a long commute for many passengers on this chilly november night. we found hundreds of people in the dark parking lot at the caltrain station. al patiently waiting for buses to bring them to another station, so they can board a train. >> how long have you had to wait? >> i got on the train in mountain view a little after 5. and now it's what? 8:00here? about three hours. >> more than two hours since i got on the train. and then we've probably waited for more than an hour on the

train. >> what were you doing to try to kill time? >> read. >> reporter: buses to nearby train stations, the lines were long, but orderly. we found this woman offering free rides to stranded passengers. >> i just came to pick up my husband who lives on the train. we live in san francisco, but we have room for more. we know what a drag it is it to wait. >> reporter: fire crews responded to the initial report of a downed power line. when they arrived, witnesses told them, they saw the electrical line sparking, the fire captain says he suggests the first rain of the season may have caused the problem. >> when the dust gets wet, it can generally turn that dust into a mud, which conducts electricity. so it can actually conduct some of the electricity down to the wood of the bolt, and can start a small fire. >> reporter: we saw pg and e

crews arrive here shortly after 8:00 to repair the lines. around 9:40 tonight, the fire captain, and a caltran supervisor told me all service has been resumed. amber lee, ktvu, channel 2 news. now to the storm that has brought some much needed rain to the bay area. this is what it looked like in san francisco today, when people needed to keep their umbrellas out for much of the morning and the afternoon. you can see drivers in oakland had to go through large pools of of standing water. the rain combined with falling leaves, also caused many storm drains to clog. they fixed the power lines, but the road was closed for several hours, as the crews cleared away the downed tree.

let's take you back to 1:00 this afternoon. the heaviest rain impulses are moving onshore over san francisco, half moon bay, eventually moving across the bay, but this moved out by late afternoon. in fact, right now, we have partly cloudy skies. the chance of a few lingering showers out there. lots of clouds out there, and once again, the chance of a spotty light shower for tonight, and right on through tomorrow morning. all month long, we've been talking about the very dry weather pattern in place until this week. especially for today with the rainfall moving onshore. as far as the rainfall accumulations over the past two days, you can see, very impressive. look at san rafael. 1.37. oakland 1.24. we picked up the bulk of this rainfall early this afternoon and things are still pretty cloudy out there right now. forecast headlines coming up in 15 minutes. we'll break down shower chances for your morning commute. and a wind advisory for part of the bay area. tonight at 10:15, a

waterlogged south bay highway makes for a slow crawl of a commute, and we've learned a crime is to blame. tonight, for the first time, we're hearing from a witness who was actually onboard that ac transit bus when a teenager was set on fire. the witness jumped in to help, as a panicked lucas tried to put out the flames. >> reporter: if you call dan a hero, he will give you an argument. >> no i'm not a hero. we're supposed to do these things. we're supposed to help people. >> reporter: he was riding in a transit bus on his way home from work. teenagers were sitting in the back. >> i heard somebody said you're not going to do that. and more of a joking way. then, you know, that's when it all started. >> reporter: gil says he turned

around, and say 18-year-old sasha fleishman's skirt on fire. >> he said right away, somebody lit me on fire. he was panicked, and trying to put it out himself. >> reporter: sasha who had been sleeping, was now standing, gale and another passenger waded through a crowd of people to get to him. >> i went to my sweatshirt, grabbed it with my hand and pulled it off. right away, thought i can do this. it just took time to get to him. that's the bad pardon. >> reporter: gil says he doesn't deserve any credit, but oakland's police chief called his actions heroic. >> this is reaffirming there's a lot of good people out there as within. >> - - as well. >> reporter: it's been 16 days since the attack, sasha is still recovering with burns to the legs. >> it's sickening. somebody just trying to go to school and get home. you know, i don't know what we

nightclub in san francisco that killed one woman, and left another hospitalized in critical condition. late today, police gave us this picture of the suspected gunman. he is 23-year-old michael green. he is described as 5'11". weighing 230 pounds. investigators say they need the public's help to track him down. police say that green shot and killed 23-year-old melquisha warren. it happened after the women had been involved in a minor fender bender in a parking lot at 6th and jesse. tonight, greg suhr had this to say. >> this is an especially egregious brutal homicide. and this is an especially dangerous person, and we need to get him into custody. >> police say they believe that green lives on the peninsula, and he may be driving a 2001 mercedes. investigators are also looking for a woman. a school bus had to be

pulled out of a wet cement area after a bizarre accident in san francisco. a tow truck pulled the bus out just before 3:00. crews were working on a road repair project. they say all the proper signs were out, and have no idea why the bus driver went straight into the hole that had just been filled with cement. the b.a.r.t. board of directors is meeting tomorrow. as we reported, b.a.r.t. says the section in the contract giving workers six weeks of paid family leave was a mistake. the unions dispute that. they issued a statement tonight, saying they expect the board will honor the agreement. if the contract is approved, the unions say they're willing to discuss the implementation of the family medical leave provision, including its cost. however, several b.a.r.t. board members say they have little choice but to vote it down. the state is in its best

financial shape in ten years. mack taylor says the state should end the current fiscal year, with $2.2 billion in reserve. he credits higher than expected tax revenues. in five years, that reserve could grow to $5 billion. tonight, family and friends of an 85-year-old man from palo alto are asking, why is he being detained in north korea? he's been in custody for several weeks after being pulled off a flight. it's another case of an american held in north korea without any explanation. >> the chaning house is a large, tight knit community. merrill newman has lived there with his wife. he took a trip to north korea. >> was he excited about going

it's been a source of tension for years, but tonight in vallejo they decided to change the controversial indian mascot at vallejo high school. reaction is split. >> reporter: julie, after listening to people on both sides of the issue, the board voted to drop the apache mascot at the end of the school year. of a years of waging a change the mascot campaign -- >> the city of vallejo stood

up, and got rid of that racist mascot. >> they made history tonight. >> reporter: wounded knee has led the 13 year push for the mascot to be eliminated. he and other native americans have long complained, it was offensive. >> i am a living and breathing human being and i am not a mascot. >> reporter: but some students and alumni opposed the change. >> it's not derogatory. we're praising them. we're proud to be, what our mascot is. >> reporter: the board based its decision on the recommendation of civil rights that urges students to avoid using native american nicknames. these activists are glad there is one less now. >> hoping they send a message across the united states of america, that all of these mascots need to be taken down.

>> reporter: students and staff at vallejo high will now participate in selecting a new mascot for their school. a final decision is expected to be announced in january. reporting live in vallejo, heather holmes, came came. the coachella valley school district decided to change the look of its mascot, but not the name. stanford university dropped its indian mascot in 1972, and became the stanford cardinal, while adopting the stanford tree as a mascot. people are calling for auto crackdown on speeders. 41-year-old edwin andrews was killed last night. a neighbor's surveillance video shows him with his cane, moving slowly toward broadway, just

moments before he was hit. both drivers involved in the crash are cooperating with police. neighbors say that stretch of broadway is dangerous, and drivers rarely stop for pedestrians. hayward police arrested two in suspicion of murder of another teen. he died later at the hospital. police say two teens were seen running from the area. authorities say they're both juveniles, just 16 and 17 years old. the two were tracked it to modesto, and arrest yesterday. a jury convicted two gang members with a shooting. they face life in prison without the possibility of parole for the april 2011 shooting a the now closed sweet jimmy. prosecutors say what started

officials at san francisco international airport say they have learned some lessons to the deadly asiana air crash, and are making some changes as a result. the results of an internal investigation were released today. the airport says there were failures such as the sfo website, which went down shortly after the crash. the airline has moved the website to be able to handle the traffic. the airport will also try to prevent nearby hotels from gouging passengers stranded by airport closures. and sfo is also in the process of setting up a large scale facility to reunite families. the weather is causing

significant delays at sfo tonight. a 52% on time arrival flight, with 31 flights canceled today. and a new travel study predicts it's going to get a lot worse in the coming years. noel walker is live at sfo. the study suggest it's flying out of sfo could feel like the busiest travel day every day. >> reporter: imagine holiday like travel on some ordinary wednesday in say june. it makes 50/50 chance of arriving here on time tonight, sound pretty good. san francisco international is a gateway airport. often, the gate is jammed by low clouds and fog. >> about two hours late. >> reporter: randy and her son are minnesota bound. eventually. >> we took advantage of the delay to go visit terminal 2, which we love. so we got great food, and did some shopping. >> reporter: a silver lining more travelers in the future will need to find.

a new u.s. travel association study says in the next 25 years, traveling at sfo could feel like the day before thanksgiving every single day. >> the day before thanksgiving, is one of the busiest of the year. so i wouldn't want to see that happen. >> reporter: the study says without more runways, more customs, and border agents, and an upgraded air traffic control system, sfo is going to feel like a version of the movie groundhog day. >> you have some big challenges coming into san francisco. >> reporter: lots of travelers with time on their hands. just 52% of flights are on time. >> delayed, by two hours. >> are you surprised? >> with this weather, no. not too surprised. >> reporter: the airport is using a new procedure to stagger plane arrivals to try to minimize the inevitable

school teacher today in santa rosa. ken wayne is at mid-rose high school in santa rosa. he found out if it hadn't been for the actions of another student, the outcome could have been much worse. >> reporter: that student told me over the phone tonight that as soon as he realized what was happening, he jumped into action. it happened during the lunch break as some students were sitting in class. for some reason, a 16-year-old boy became angry at teacher tyler alborn. these are pictures of alborn from his facebook page. the teen began stabbing him with a metal mechanical pencil. >> multiple stab wounds. >> a whole bunch. >> i saw him on the ground. a lot of blood on the ground. >> reporter: that's when another student jumped in to stop the attack. other students back up his story. >> he actually took off his shirt i guess to try to stop

a team of alameda county law enforcement officers served search warrants today in part of a major drug bust. they confiscated marijuana plants from an office building on doolittle drive. they also carried out search warrants in dublin, castro valley. part of a six week investigation that was apparently touched off by an anonymous tip. police say they have the names of the suspects, but have not made any arrests. in arizona, border patrol agents have seized marijuana in the past five days. authorities have confiscated drugs from various check points along state route 80. investigators say all of the

drugs and vehicles have been processed for seizure, but no suspects have been taken into custody. the los angeles county coroner's office says the officer killed at l.a.x. died in two to five minutes. he lay wounded inside the airport even after the suspected gunman was in custody. law enforcement officials say paramedics were kept away for 33 minutes while the airport was secured. there were concerns hernandez could have possibly been saved if he had received treatment sooner. suspected gunman paul ciancia faces several charges that could lead to the death penalty. southwest airlines is the latest to adopt the faa's newly relaxed rules on electronic devices. flyers can now keep their devices on throughout the flight, and get on the internet as soon as they board.

uc hospital workers are expected to be back on the job tomorrow after staging a one day strike. a large group of union members braved the rain to picket

outside of ucf today. dozens of patients had to postpone surgeries due to this walk out. union leaders say workers have been harassed, and intimidate the by uc management for taking part in a two day strike in may. a massive tunnel boring machine is about to reach a busy san francisco corridor and start drilling just below an existing b.a.r.t. tunnel. an exclusive look at the work going on, and only on 2, he explains what commuters might notice in the next few days. >> reporter: it's loud, claustrophobic, and more than a little muddy. but san francisco's subway is now marking a milestone. >> the most progress we've made in one day, is we installed 100 feet of tunnel, which is essentially 20 rings. >> reporter: 2000 feet at the 1.7-mile, $1.56 billion line have been completed. in the next day or so, a

stations. in san francisco, david stevenson, ktvu, channel 2 news. seat belts on buses. new safety regulations are now moving forward for large buses and coaches that transport passengers between cities. the regulations issued today call for all new coaches and some other large buses to be equipped with lap and shoulder belts by 2016. supporters of the law say it will save countless lives. the law does not apply to school buses, or city transit buses. well the heaviest rain of the season so far making an impact today, especially during the afternoon hours. things have changed quite a bit over the last few hours. you can see on live stormtracker 2, the bulk of the activity is moving out to the east and to the south. a little bit of shower activity, as we do zoom in parts of the north bay. as you can see, a little bit of

activity here. nothing too major, but enough to wet the roadways here. you can pick out just to the east of st. helena. we'll move the maps to the south. just some cloud cover, we could have a light shower in the south bay. still some lingering clouds. still the chance of a shower for tonight, and for early thursday morning. for tonight, we will have this once again a chance of a shower. tomorrow, wind speeds do pick up. here is our roof camera, looking out toward san francisco. the forecast for tomorrow in san francisco starting out the morning hours right around 50 degrees on track to reach 60, with an increase in sunshine for the afternoon. the weekend will be be completely dry, but a bit breezy to windy out there. current numbers, kind of mild out there for this time of day. santa rosa, checking in at 52, oakland, 54. and san jose, 53 degrees. the storm center is moving out to the south and to the east. as a result, the rain heads out to the south and to the east as well. there, as i mentioned, a chance of a light shower for tonight, up until about 5:00, or 6:00
