. complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is the 10:00 news on ktvu channel 2. allegations of understaffing at a bay area hospital. a devastated family tells ktvu news that this young girl went in for routine surgery and tonight, she is on life support. good evening everyone i'm heather holmes. ken wayne is off tonight. the family of that teenaged girl is sitting at her bedside at oakland's children's hospital and say a receiverle procedure has turned into a nightmare as they prepare to say goodbye to the young girl and loved ones blame the

hospital. new at 10:00, ktvu's patti lee with the fav's complaint, and the hospital's response. patti. >> reporter: i spoke to family members here about an hour ago. they are inside right now, trying to accept the fact that the little girl who went in to get her tonsils removed is now on life support and they claim the hospital is making their situation worse. >> she told me my daughter would be home on tuesday. and now you are telling me she will never come home. >> reporter: she broke down in front of children's hospital as she talked about her daughter, 13 -year-old mcmath who had her tonsils and annoids removed, but one family member who is a surgical nurse says she kept asking for help, but few nurses were around and claimed that the staff didn't react until she started screaming for help. >> i was the last one to see her, and i said, somebody help

my baby, please. and they came in and they started working on her and the next thing you know, her heart -- the doctor says oh, no, she doesn't have a heart rate no more. >> reporter: hospital spokesperson says the icu was and is always fully staffed and tell us why this surgery had the outcome, but the case is being investigated. but the family says they feel the hospital is treating them poorly and trying to rush them out. >> your family has taken over the visiting room, you guys are invading children's hospital and i feel like you guys i have had invaded my life. >> reporter: they say they are not trying to rush the family out of room, but it's the family's decision to make with their doctor as to when to take the 13-year-old

off life support. oakland, patti lee, ktvu channel 2 news. developing news right now, that we're following in the east bay, where a 19-year-old woman was shot inside a home apparently the victim of a stray bullet. the shooting happened in richmond, a little more than an hour ago, about 8:40. police say the bullet came through the home near 37th street, shot spotter picked up at least nine rounds. police say the victim was shot in the lob lower back and airlifted to a trauma center. if we get any more information on the shooting we'll be sure to pass it along to you. now it newtown, connecticut and today mark one year since the devastating mass shooting at sandy hook elementary school. 20 first graders and six educators were killed before the gunman, adam lanza took his own life. there were no formal events in the town and officials asked to allow the people to grieve in

public, but others gathered outside of the church to pray. >> i hope that us marching this day would further our resolve to live in kindness and in generosity and in compassion. >> the tragedy sparked calls across the country for stronger gun laws and more help for people with mental illness. for some bay area residents today brought back memories other senseless shootings and the high cost of gun violence. john sasaki talked about those impacted by gun violence, including a survivor. >> reporter: at san francisco's recreation center, people said the names of loved ones lost to gun violence. they used the anniversary of sandy hook to honor all victims. >> unfortunately it is little kids getting killed out here too. >> reporter: they marched carrying their message of peace. this woman lost her 19-year-old son to gun violence in 2010. >> this is his daughter, and he did not get to see his

sheriff. today the arapahoe county receiver said 18-year-old karl pierson was heavily armed with a shut down, ammunition, a machete and molotov cocktails. police believe pierson was targeting a debate coach who had disciplined him. >> he was warped multi-million rounds and three incendiary devices and his intent was evil and his evil intent was to harm multiple individuals. >> one student identified as 17-year-old claire davis was shot and critically wounded. pierson then took his own life. sheriff says pierson bought the shotgun legally just one week before the shooting. back in the bay area, police in el cerrito are hoping store surveillance video will lead to the women behind a scam targeting elderly shoppers. police received reports of three incidents yesterday all from people shopping in el cerrito. the scam attempts to trick drivers into believing that they hit a car and a fake

victim demands cash. the police say in two cases the women followed their targets. when the men called police, the women disappeared. >> it's a scam that frightens older people like me. >> reporter: one suspect is described as a white-aired woman between 50 and 75 years old and police say the other woman is around 40 years old and their getaway car may be a blue, honda suv. fire commanders based at san francisco international airport are scheduled to get more training on how to respond to airplane crashes following the asiana accident. ard could to the san francisco chronicle, the fire department will send commanders to 40 to 80-hour course on how to deal with plane dispatchers. cousin is taught at the fire training research center at dallas-fort worth international airport. a 16-year-old asiana passenger who ended up on the ground and covered with flame-retardant foam was killed when two fire rigs ran over her following that july 6th crash.

former south african president nelson mandela will soon be laid to rest near his childhood home. earlier today hundreds gathered to cheer, sing and cry as the hearse carrying nelson mandela's coffin arrived at village of qunu, will he will be buried. thousanding have been making their way to that remote region of south africa and dignitaries include britain's prince charles, oprah winfrey and desmond tutu. ♪[ music ] >> the bay area paid tribute to mandela this evening, the memorial was held on the uc berkeley campus where students gathered back in the '80s to demand the university divest funds from south africa under the apartheid regime. they encouraged people to think about the role that they can play in current struggles for justice. >> this is an opportunity to

is $100 and increases to $500 for the second offense. our meteorologist mark tamayo is here to explain more about why all of these alerts are being issued. >> well, heather we're locked into this dry weather pattern and really nothing to mix things up as a result we'll have more spare the air alerts in the bay area. this was the scene in san josi looking out towards all of that haze at 3:00 this afternoon. we have been talking about the string of spare the air alerts in the bay area and another one set for tomorrow. basically what is happen right now, that stable setup in place overhead kind of traps the pollutants closer to the surface. so the air quality levels for today fort north bay to the santa clara valley, and you will notice these numbers do go up, but most cases going up in the scale for air quality for tomorrow. what is happen right now is this, in fact, we'll take a look coming up for you at the temperature profile. closer to the surface did t- cools more rapidly than it does in the higher terrains and

. happening now, the funeral for late south african president nelson mandela has just started if qunu, south africa and you are taking a live look at the events taking place there. many dignitaries are expected to attend this three-hour funeral ceremony. we'll carry that later after that newscast. handing over weapons from san francisco to san josi. police try to reduce the possible for violence here in the bay area. and they aim to do so by

enticing gun owners with offer they can't refuse. katie utehs reports. >> reporter: former marine lined up half an hour before san josi's gun buyback even started. he is exchanging a british infield rifle and .22 caliber semi-automatic. >> i had no use for them at this point many my life. so anything that i can do to help the community, and maybe myself. it's a good time. >> reporter: in the parking lot of our lady of guadalupe church, officers and volunteers handed out target gift cards $200 for an assault rifle and $100 for handguns and hunting rifles. within 45 minutes, 150 weapons were dropped off. weapons are brought here inside, where they are then tagged by property specialists with the san josi police department. they are then cataloged, weapons that have historical value will be kept for

education and training purposes. the rest will be destroyed. but some say it's not addressing larger gun control issues. >> people that are mentally ill shouldn't have guns, but that has nothing do with this. >> reporter: while it's difficult to tie any reductions to a buyback, anecdotally police and prosecutors say it makes a difference. >> i can say absolutely it helps because everyday i file charges of gun thefts and gun burglaries from homes with guns that they don't really need or use. >> reporter: organizers echoed those sentiments saying it's not the responsible gun owner who is the problem. in san josi, katie utehs,ktvu channel 2 news. contra costa county sheriff's deputies are investigating a shooting in rodeo that killed a 25-year-old man at 1:00 a.m., deputies arrived on the 1000 black of the boulevard and found the

victim suffering from several gunshot wounds. paramedics later pronounced him dead. three people reportedly shot the victim while he sat in a vehicle with a passenger who was not injured. >> the 176 billion dollar fund supplies inspections to public schoolteachers. well, earlier this week, treasurer bill lockyer predicted "if nothing is done the fund imploded in 30 years." uc santa barbara is said to be considering giving students an unlicensed vaccine to try to stop the spread of bacterial meningitis. the la times reports that they are working with health experts to give the students the vaccine. princeton university has received permission to distribute the drug after eight students got sick with meningitis. four students got i can sick at

uc santa barbara. >> the centers for disease control says last year's flu season was one of the worst with 169 children killed and more than 3,000 people hospitalized. well, despite those numbers health care officials say the vaccine helped to prevent millions of people from getting significant. firefighters in west sacramento are hailing a pair of young teens who saved a family from their burning house. this afternoon the fire started in the back tato and inside the family of five including two children and a grandmother were unaware of it. choiane dubois and her friend, adam lamb, were bicycling when they saw the smoke rising and got to the house as fast as they could. >> they were in the house; right? and they were moving and so i opened the door and grabbed the kids and he grabbed the grandma and the mom. >> i was kind of scared because i didn't want to get too close and not be safe, but also, i did want to save lives. >> everyone made it out safely, thanks to those two. damage to the house was

extensive and the family is now being helped by the red cross. a warning tonight about a potentially deadly level of toxin found in shellfish off the coast of california from monterey to marin counties. they are testing high for toxins that occur naturally in the plants that cause red tide. the toxins affect the central nervous system and can be followed by loss of balance, lack of muscular coordination, slurred speech and difficulty swallowing and in severe poisoning death by asphyxiation can occur. an annual tradition in san francisco as dozens of santas hit the street. there was a sea of red in sunon square for santa con. in addition, to being the pub crawl, this event included gift

avalanche area ended up with a crash and officer-involved shooting. the suspects drunk driver had eluded deputies and police for about an hour when he slammed into another car. as the man got out of corvette, apparently trying to escape, police shot him dead. other car hit a fire hydrant and the two people inside that vehicle were hospitalized. bay area authorities are out tonight looking for drunk and drug impaired drivers. several avoid the dui campaigns launched yesterday request checkpoint screening drivers all over the bay area. law enforcement reports that in alameda county, 39 drivers were arrested on dui charges. 33 were arrested in santa clara county. four in san mateo county and six drivers were arrested in sonoma county. the avoid campaigns will lou r run through new year's day. a huge snowstorm in the midwest and east is disrupting traffic. in buffalo, new york, several inches of snow blanketing the region. the storm is affected more than

care act if you want coverage starting january 1st. that looming deadline drew dozens of people to this enrollment event in oakland today, organized by united health care workers west. valerie jones runs her own daycare in berkeley. she is trying to find a more affordable health care plan and was told she will likely pay half what she does now. >> i know it's going to be beneficial for me. it's people available to help you understand what you don't understand. >> reporter: some at this event say they tried to sign up through covered california's website with not much success, but here volunteers are able to streamline the process. affordable care act applicants have dealt with website issues and long wait times to talk to someone over the phone. >> covered california is overwhelmed and that is why they asked us to reach out to people. robert jetters with the organize's members are trained by the state, and can get
