that breaking news is in san francisco. and a massive response to a house fire. more than 100 firefighters race to the scene to put out the flames. good evening, merry christmas. >> that fire broke out just about an hour ago, north of the panhandle. there have been reports that two people have been taken to the hospital with serious

burns. the fire was reported just before 9:00 on a victorian north on baker street. amber lee is on the scene with late information. >> reporter: frank, we're talking about a beautiful old victorian home that neighbors tell me was recently re-done. i have with me, deputy chief of operations, mark gonzalez to bring us up to date on what's happening with this fire. >> at this time, the fire is under control. 618 baker, 4 story, wooden building. a heavy fire in the back of the building on the third floor. eventually, it spread to the top floor. there were two occupants that we took out. the first engine 21 had to deal with that. they got them out quickly, but there was a little bit of a delay. there was a definite challenge getting the ladders out. as you can see, there's wires in front of the building. and units did a good job overall, but the two patients got transported code 3 to st.

francis. >> reporter: what do you know about the two victims? >> we just know they're elderly males and had burns. >> reporter: wood structures make it very difficult. was it a fast moving fire? >> it was fast, and it spread quick from the first floor to the third floor. giants inside, they did some overhaul. checking that for fire extension, and found none. >> reporter: the difficulty is that there's power lines right up in front of the house? >> yeah, so as you can see, it's a four story building and it's on a hill. we can't get our aerial ladders up. they did get up to the roof that way, and also laddered from the back. >> reporter: is there any reason to believe it's arson? >> at this time, our investigators are on the scene

and it's under investigation. >> reporter: thank you very much. the latest from here, when we have more, we will is of course bring it to you live. reporting live in san francisco, amber lee, ktvu, channel 2 news. also in san francisco tonight, a homeless outreach center that's helped as many as 100 young people a day in the haight-ashbury district is is no more. this is a story we first told you about a couple of weeks ago. >> reporter: it's not the kind of christmas anyone here imagined. the homeless youth alliance here at haight-ashbury has shut down. the alliance has been providing everything from showers to meals to counseling to the area's homeless youth. >> mostly food, and some hygienic stuff. sometimes some blankets. >> reporter: today the alliance passed out free sleeping bags to help those with next to

nothing stay warm on this christmas night. more than that, it's been a place of refuge, where sometimes angry, and confused people could go to be understood. >> i know when i was a teenage and was homeless, that was the hardest part, the way people treated me like trash. like my life didn't matter. >> reporter: some point to rising rents. >> i know the fabric of san francisco is changing quite a bit. but we need to have space in the city for everybody. >> they help to get drivers' licenses. >> i don't know yet, unfortunately, i'm new to san francisco and don't leave the haight a heck of a lot.

think the about 47 in the water right now. usually, it would be in the 40s, and be a little bit warmer in the water than it would actually be outside. >> reporter: it was an unexpected holiday gift to bay area residents. >> this is awesome. >> you were expecting something different? >> yeah, foggy, and cloudy. >> reporter: instead, tourists atop san francisco's twin peaks got a view of the haze shrouding the city. last year, it was cold and wet up here. the warmth this christmas prompted some to dress down for the holiday. >> we're from the east coast, used to bundling up. this is good liberating to be outside, and enjoying the day. >> reporter: visitors bundled in scarfs, jackets, and fur coats weren't ready for the weather. >> christmas we always come here, and it's always cold.

>> i'm kind of sweating right now, it's really hot. >> reporter: the heat also highlighted the 18th spare the air alert this season. reminding folks there would be no yule log on the fireplace this christmas. happening now, a sparkling holiday in san francisco. taking a live look at the twinkling tree in union square. this christmas was indeed one of the warmest for san francisco. in fact, i checked with mark. he said it was just a few degrees shy of the record. let's check in now with mark, who has been tracking the temperatures, for one bay area city actually did include a record. >> reporter: that's right. we're talking about some upper 60s in oakland. downtown oakland. that was the record for today. very warm. widespread 60s, and temperatures a good 5 to 10 degrees above the average. there's that record in oakland. 69degrees this afternoon. that is at the downtown location. for san francisco, san jose,

livermore, still within striking distance. as far as temperatures today, across the entire bay area, lower 60s. a few low 70s toward morgan hill. lots of 60s for concord. livermore, and antioch. these numbers very strange for this time of year. coming up in 10 minutes, we'll take a look at this. in 15 minutes, we'll take a look at the air quality. a cold thursday morning will highlight the areas that will be in the lower 30s. that once again is in 15 minutes. another spare the air day has been called for tomorrow. that means for the fourth straight day, wood burning will be banned in the bay area. it's illegal to use fireplaces, wood stoves, and outdoor fire pits. coming up, the disappointment for some, but the relief for ours as a result of this ban. this warmer weather is causing a concern in big sur. fire crews are patrolling the area, where a wildfire burned. there's still some smoke, and a

worry that increased temperatures could cause flare ups. the pfeiffer fire was fully contained last week, but not before 34 homes were destroyed. all of the people who evacuated have been allowed to return home. investigators are still determining the cause of that fire. san francisco firefighters played santa today. handing out toys in the tenderloin. firefighters from station 1 along with various elves drove around, giving out toys. parents and kids alike were surprised, and grateful. >> what a sweet thing to do on christmas, to go out and just give to strangers. >> for us to be able to bring our children to do this every single christmas for us, it's now become a family tradition. >> also helped deliver the toys, saying it helped teach children about the joy of giving. >> last night, we showed you

some of the toys dropped off at lefty o' dules. it exceeded their goal. more than 11,000 toys were donated. by the time the drive ended at closing time at 2:00 this morning. a sad holiday for the family of an east bay girl on life support after tonsil surgery. we talked to the family about how they spent this christmas with her. >> not in time for christmas, ups and fedex, apologizing for those late deliveries. we

an update now on that breaking news we told you about at the top of the newscast in san francisco. that's where a three-alarm fire sent two elderly men to the hospital this christmas night. that fire broke out about 9:00 tonight in a four story wooden victorian on baker street. that's north of the panhandle. firefighters say it appears the fire broke out on the 3rd floor in the back of the building and quickly spread to the 4th floor. about 100 firefighters were called to respond. at this hour, fire investigators say the blaze is under control, but crews remain there on the scene. the cause of that fire is under investigation. everyone always hopes their packages will arrive in time for christmas. this year, both ups and fedex

say unfortunately, some deliveries are going to be late. allie rasmus tells us, it appears the two companies may have misjudged all the demand. >> reporter: the holidays are the busiest time of the year for ups. this time, some shipments did not arrive for christmas. >> 99% of the things arrived. but there was one item for myself that didn't arrive yet. >> reporter: some of the more than everyone 7.5 million shipments out for delivery this week did not reach their destination in time for the holiday. the company won't say how many packages are late, but explained quote, the volume of packages exceeded our network, as demand was much greater than forecast. a spokesman for fedex said that company also experienced holiday delays. the demand to have packages shipped was greater than expected. an increase in online shopping may be driving the trend. >> i didn't have a whole lot of

time. i got on my computer and ordered everything. made it a lot easier. >> i do all my shopping online now. i don't really go to stores anymore. >> reporter: online sales this holiday season were up 9% compared to a year ago. retail sales were up only 2%. the delivery delays this year won't keep him from shopping online again, even if he has to wait a little longer. >> i know i'm going to get it eventually. not the end of the world. people have more problems. >> reporter: for customers who ordered through amazon.com, the company is going to be crediting $20 back to those customers accounts to apologize for the shipping delay. postal workers in the south bay volunteered today to make sure families got their christmas packages on time. >> oh, wow. this is highly unexpected, okay. >> mail carries made deliveries of express letters and packages

in the south bay. veteran carrier nancy ray says it's all in the spirit of santa. >> this is what makes it worth it. when people are home, and when they're surprised, and happy. that's what makes it worth it for me, to be out here and delivering. >> the u.s. postal service says all together, it handled 420 million pieces of mail this holiday season. san jose, authorities are trying to figure out whether a deadly accident on the light rail tracks was an accident. a woman was hit and killed by a train in san jose at about 1 this morning. the woman was walking on the tracks, and was wearing dark clothes when she was hit. her name has not been released. an apartment fire in san francisco has left ten people out of their homes on this christmas night. investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fire, which started just after midnight on 23rd street. you're looking now at video that was taken by joss

jacobson. fire crews were able to contain the fire after about 40 minutes. no one was hurt. covered in california. the state health exchange has extended the deadline to get coverage by january 1. if you signed up by this past monday, but were not able to complete your application, you now have until friday to get it done. a spokesperson says applicants should work with representatives. the call centers are closed tonight. they will be open as of 8:00 tomorrow morning. a san francisco superior court judge tomorrow could help decide the fate of city college of san francisco. the judge is set to hear two requests for injunctions. city attorney dennis herrera and the california federation of teachers argue that it was bias against ccsf, and had conflicts of interest. if the injunctions are not granted, the school will lose its accreditation at the end of next july. it's not every day you find

unanswered, the family wanted to make sure the letter arrived in time for christmas, so they made an compact copy and brought it here to thompson avenue, where they put it in the mailbox for letters to santa. the child's wish list, succinct. the giant monkey's arms redrawn several times. >> when they're only asking for one thing, you really hope they get that one thing. >> reporter: as their own children play with christmas toys, they think of the child that put their wish list afloat. >> it's such a unique way of contacting santa, it deserves to go back to them. if there is any way for that to happen, it would be fantastic. well the bay area locked in this dry, stable weather pattern. as a result, we're talking about another stretch of spare the air alerts in this region. tomorrow, another one

scheduled. this was the scene today, looking out towards san jose. all of that haze at about 2:45 this afternoon. in terms of air quality, once again, we had this stable lid above us, trapping the pollutants cross to the surface. the numbers really coming up today. we want to keep the numbers on the lower side. they are coming down a bit into your thursday. still, we had that spare the air alert for the north bay. i'm tracking a weather system. i'll let you know if the 70s remain in the bay area forecast. more than half a million utility customers from michigan to maine, and up into canada have been without power this christmas week. repair crews have worked around the clock as people crowd at community centers trying to stay warm. at maine, the utility companies are warning the power might not be back on until friday. the storm is being blamed for as many as 14 deaths.

typhoon survivers in the philippines are celebrating christmas. typhoon haiyan killed more than 6,000 people in the philippines last month. it's believed that marital problems were likely behind a murder suicide in san lorenzo this morning. a man killed his wife, and then himself. the four children were all in the home at the time. one of them saw it all happen.

>> reporter: a san lorenzo family is forever scared by what happened in their home christmas morning. four children woke up to the sound of gunshots, and their parents dead. veronica rodriguez got the call from her niece saying her sister was killed. >> reporter: relatives say 40- year-old john lynn killed his wife then turned the gun on himself. the 16-year-old son witnessed the murder suicide and ran to tell his siblings and grandparents in the home. >> that leaves a scar on everybody on christmas. >> reporter: the couple was having marital problems. >> most of all, it's just a tragedy. to leave someone mother and fatherless, it's a sad story for christmas. >> reporter: she wishes her sister would have reached out

in jordan, syrian refugees attended christmas mass. more than 1 million people have fled war torn syria. this was an emotionally wrenching christmas for a family of a 14-year-old girl who remains on life support at children's hospital. while loved ones say they are heartbroken, spending this holiday together was an important achievement. jana katsuyama is live in oakland, with a look at the legal fight ahead. >> reporter: jahi mcmath's uncle came down and spoke to me this evening, and told me they are doing everything they can to try to put some of that legal trouble aside just for today, and provide some love and support to this family. on this christmas day at children's hospital, the family of jahi mcmath came together and did their best to find peace and hope. >> all of our aunties, our

cousins. all of my sisters, my grandmother came. >> reporter: he told ktvu, today was about being together as a family. playing games, music. sharing food and stories with jahi nearby. their attorney joined them in support. >> a big part of the legal battle was just getting here today, so that this family could have christmas together, so that jahi could spend christmas surrounded with love. >> reporter: jahi mcmath went into children's hospital for what the family would be a routine tonsilectomy. it ended with jahi on life support. a doctor said jahi is brain dead. >> he was able to explain it very clearly to us. it's heartbreaking to hear, but you know, we still have a few days left for a miracle. >> reporter: a christmas miracle which they hope might save the 13-year-old girl who remains on life support. today, two women who don't know the family came across the bay

to offer comfort. >> i want the family to know there are other people praying for their family, and for their daughter. >> this case is very important, not only forthis family, but for all families to know they have rights when it comes down to these decisions. it's not a hospital's decision alone, to say that someone is dead, and that they'll be removed from life support >> reporter: here's a photo, a picture of the tree they put in her room, with the ribbon of her favorite color, purple. they tell me they will plan to discuss tomorrow, what they'll do, whether they will move her to another facility, or perhaps even file a motion to challenge the judge's order. reporting live in oakland, jana katsuyama, ktvu, channel 2 news. for some people, christmas brings no holiday from work. but the people we talked with

friday sales. some stores including kohl's and macy's will open as early as 5, and 6:00 a.m. today is a day of many traditions. one that's been going on for eight years is called christmas in richmond. it all started with one woman who had an idea. >> reporter: the whole idea was to make people happy. burgundy spears came up with the idea. her plan to make sure kids without presents would get, one, two, or more on christmas day. it started when her mother struggled to buy presents for her sister. >> when you have families that are stressed out, not able to provide at all. >> reporter: she started a non- profit called christmas in richmond. a party where hundreds of

small fortune in the back of his taxi. he just dropped off a passenger when he found a brown paper bag in his cab. inside was $300,000. he called the cab company, and turned over the money. soon, the distraught passenger showed up. turns out, he had won the money playing poker. for his integrity, the taxi company gave him a $1,000 reward. a holiday song about a bay area city. we talked to the singer behind this holiday tune, and why it's getting new life two years after sh

♪[ music ] a christmas tradition for some is going for a little swim. they got into 40-degree water in berlin, jury roomny. this is a hearty group. they say they're looking for even colder weather. a holiday song made to get some attention. the woman behind it recently posted a video of the song online. eric rasmussen tracked her down to find the inspiration for all of her positive activity. >> reporter: set to a series of photos around the city, let's take a holiday in oakland may sound like marketing. lisa bernstein says the lyrics come straight from the heart. >> let take a walk around the lake, with the runners and the

writer and poetry instructor. just days after thousands of people gathered outside her home to sing christmas carols, an 8-year-old pennsylvania girl died today from a rare form of leukemia. ♪ [ music ] >> last saturday, we told you about the more than 6,000 people who answered little delaine brown's wish to hear holiday songs. her family said she was too ill to come to the window, but could hear the singing from her bed. they released this photo of her listening to the carolers and giving a thumb's up. on this day, delaine died. the family wrote, our little angel earned her little pink glittery angel wings in heaven. a car bomb exploded outside a church just as worshipers were saying their goodbyes. the church attack was one of

three bombings in the christian section of baghdad. since the u.s. invasion, more than 10,000 iraqi christians have been killed and 62 churches and monasteries have been vandalized, or destroyed. the country's christian population has gone from some 1.5 million in 2003, to an estimated 300,000 today. christmas is especially tough for families with loved ones fighting abroad. one girl got a special message from her dad stationed in afghanistan. >> i just want to say hi rose. merry christmas. >> rose's dad arranged for that message to be broadcast during school's announcements. rose had no idea her reaction was being filmed. >> him thinking of me doing that, knowing that my dad knew me so well, knowing that would make my day, it made me feel so special. >> rose's high school put it up

on youtube, and it got more than 6,000 hits. rose's dad says he's watched it more than a dozen times. a new jersey nurse got the surprise of her life today, when santa claus turned out to be her son home from afghanistan. she was told santa was coming to visit the hospital with gifts for the staff. her gift was her son, travis. it took her a minute to realize her son, travis was standing behind her. >> i could watch those all days. gearing up for another spare the air day. tomorrow will be the 19th alert this season. why some people we found say there should be even more alerts. >> and how long

♪[ music ] bagpipes played in london before some very brave souls jumped into a freezing lake, it's been a christmas tradition there since 1867. a toll on the holiday atmosphere here in the bay area, as we reported a spare the air day was declared today, and another for tomorrow. that's the fourth in a row. >> reporter: the top of the mountain looked relatively clear today, especially when you stepped back to see the thick haze below. it led to a spare the air day by the bay area air quality management district, which meant fireplaces had to be kept cold on christmas. >> i was disappointed this morning, because that's a tradition in our homes. >> reporter: many people seemed puzzled by today's declarations. >> i'm really surprised to find

will be the district's 19th and counting. and if you don't have rain or wind, you'll probably have more spare the air alerts. that's the case for tomorrow. not too much change. the warm weather pattern sticks around. as you can see, just a few patches of low clouds developing offshore. that's just about it. right now, we are in the clear. with that, the temperatures are dropping off rapidly. take a look at some of the current numbers from the 10:00 hour, 37 degrees in fairfield. 40 for napa, and santa rosa. novato, down to the upper 30s. san jose in the upper 40s, at 48 degrees. time lapse, just beautiful looking out toward the west here, and still some lingering haze. that haze will stick around for tomorrow. as far as tomorrow, hazy sunshine. 44degrees. on track to reach the 60s.
