ktvu channel 2 news starts right now with breaking news. >> ed at the breaking news, firefighters battling a one alarm fire found two people dead inside a home tonight. i am frank somerville. >> i am julie haener. breaking news on the peninsula, firefighters responded to a house fire and discovered the bodies of two people inside. ktvu's ken pritchett joins us now from the scene in palo alto where he was briefed by

authorities. ken? >> reporter: julie, we talked to the police about 15 minutes ago and they gave us what information we have and there is not a lot to report right now. this house is located, 7:15 p.m. this evening according to the police department a neighbor spotted smoke and fire coming from a house there. we can show you video that will give you a better look at that house. we shot this video. according to the fire department, when firefighters went inside the home they found two people dead. at this point we do not have any information on the ages of the victims, whether they were male or female. not -- no information at this point on those victims. i asked the police department spokesman who was here if he could say anything about the condition of the body, if there

was any indication they died as a result of the fire, that is something investigators will look into and those investigators will be handling this case from this point forward. >> that is a routine procedure in cases where there is a fire and somebody is found deceased. that is not an indication that was an arson. >> reporter: investigators will be out here tomorrow morning so that they will have more light to work by as they work their way through the scene to try determine what happened at this house. 7:15 p.m. fire coming from single family residents here and when firefighters go inside they find two people deceased. live, ken pritchett, ktvu

channel 2 news. only on 2 tonight, surveillance video taken at the corner of polk and ella streets on new year's eve where a six- year-old was struck and killed by a girl. watch the upper part of your screen. you can see an suv will disappear behind a sign and back up. that appears to be the time of impact when she was killed. her mother and brother were both injured. seconds later a ambulance arrived. the suv driver said he works for uber but uber said he didn't have a fair at the time and uber said their insurance is only in effect when a driver accepted a call. the driver was arrested but is free on bail. she facing a charge of voluntary manslaughter for that death. late today searchers in idaho found the wreckage of a plane, the plane has been missing for a month.

dale smith was piloting the plane and four of his family members were on board when it vanished. there were no survivors and a severe storm may delay recovery efforts. in a statement online smith's wife wrote the plane is in paces and buried in snow. we know my family members on the plane died quickly and painlessly. officials in the bay area reported two more deaths from the flu today and officials expected the number of cases to rise in the coming weeks. we have team coverage. ktvu's jana katsuyama has information about the outbreak but we begin in santa rosa where ktvu's debora villalon spoke to a father about the death of his 23-year-old son to the flu. >> reporter: this family is urging vaccination after he died at this hospital

wednesday. they say flu was something he didn't think about at his age and it shows medical professionals can be blind sided. [ music ] >> reporter: he had no trouble whaling on the harmonica. he performed in a half dozen bands. but two weeks ago today he arrived here gasping for air. >> friday morning he called the ambulance because he couldn't breathe. >> his dad remembers he called home. >> we spoke to him on the phone call. >> reporter: as his parents raced to the hospital their son's lugs was failing. he was sedated but his heart stopped and brain damage. >> reporter: considering he had been to the same er the day

before with his mom. on facebook posting 103 temperature, pneumonia and flu. he was sent home that same day. >> they weren't concerned. having it in the second lung by the second day stunned them. >> reporter: stunned everyone. became a coma and then a vigil till he died. he worked at this supermarket. like many young people he ran himself ragged. two jobs today he writes, feeling okay, not enough sleep and the next day, cough, sick to my stomach. >> he was setting himself up for this. >> reporter: his dad hopes young people realize they are not invincible. >> you have to take some care

prevention activity increased as flu in 25 states two weeks ago jumped to 35 states last week. in 2009, 607 californians died in the h1n1 pandemic. this season, officials are investigating 35 possible flu deaths so far but officials say this will not reach the 2009 pandemic. >> it was brand new to the world. new viruses. it hit really hard and it hit everyone. >> reporter: no one knows when the flu season will peak and officials are urging everyone to get a flu shot. today this family was going in and taking extra precautions. >> i am stiching them to -- teaching them to wash their hands more. >> 11 people died already, i don't want to be one of them. >> reporter: kaiser gave out 1.2 million flu shots so far

hackers may have stolen credit cards and debt cards information, but they don't know how widespread the informationing is. the breach -- information is. the breach happened in mid- december. tonight target's data breach, the scope of it -- scope of it grew today. they are offering a free service to americans. foster farms got the go ahead to resume operations in the central valley that was shut down because of cockroaches. the plant is in livingten. they -- livingston. they shut it down thursday. inspectors found live cockroaches. now officials say foster farms has a action plan and can be reopened tomorrow. the plant is foster farms' largest facility. a pond is going to be drained this weekend.

police are asking anyone who recognizes the man to contact authorities. police are asking for your help in identifying a driver in a hit and run collision. police say surveillance video shows a white van running over a female pedestrian along turk on december 31. the pedestrian was thrown into the van's path after being hit by another car. >> hoping that someone might have information on the whereabouts of the driver and the van. if they do contact san francisco police. >> the two suspects involved in the hit and run have been identified and facing charges. the victim is recuperating. police say they have made an arrest in connection with a nightclub brawl that killed a student in san francisco. police released this booking photo of the suspect. he was arrested yesterday on the third anniversary of the

attack. the victim was a fourth year medical student. he died after being taken off life support two days after the attack. pressurish is growing on the -- pressure is growing on the attorney general to drop charges against a transgender student accused of battery. a petition has 6,000 signatures. the 16-year-old says she has been the victim of bullying. she was involved in a fight with other teens at a high school, caught on video but she was the only person charged. the san francisco 49ers made the tripe north carolina today -- trip oo north carolina today for the playoff game with the panthers. kickoff is 36 hours away. joe fonzi is in charlotte tonight ahead of sunday's game. . >> reporter: the 49ers arrived

police have been busy tonight after responding to two shootings a couple hours apart. the lates happened about 6:00 p.m -- latest happened about 6:00 p.m. at a wendy's. when the man left wendy's he was shot by one of the suspects

who took off. the victim is suffering life threatening injuries. a few hours earlier at 3:30 p.m. this afternoon one person was hospitalized after a drive-by shooting. police say the shooting happened on grant street when our photographer was there two men were detained. police say they called off the search for additional suspects at 7:00 p.m. tonight. to the south bay, residents are worried a fire bug is on the loose. there have been 10 suspicious 5s in a six block area of san jose. we obtained surveillance video showing one fire being set. ktvu's patti lee is live in san jose where authorities are trying to determine if all the fires are the work of the same arsonist. >> reporter: every night since wednesday the residents on this block have been afraid, woken

motel with the help of a 14- year-old girl who told officers she was forced into prostitution. court in virginia ruled that san francisco's yelp must disclose the names of several anonymous reviewers. the case was brought by a business who claimed 7 negative reviews were not wrote by customers. some folks stopped using yelps because names could be closed. >> there is also the libel side, are they actually customers. >> yelp felt the ruling would have no effect in other states, even though it plans to appeal. facebook is getting rid of one of its features. in april facebook will phase

back 92 the breaking -- now to the breaking news, two people found dead inside a home after a fire. >> ktvu's ken pritchett is live now with new information about the conditions that firefighters found inside that home. ken? >> reporter: frank, let's start with where we are, on embarcadero, it is shut down behind me, it will remain shut down till they remove the two bodies inside of that home. show video of the house to give you a look at it. neighbors say they spotted smoke and fire and called 911

at 7:15 p.m. firefighters found the two bodies inside the home. what is new, the firefighters had a difficult time moving through the house due to a great deal of clutter. at this point we are told they believe the fire started in the kitchen. no word on cause. as for the victims we don't have ages or the genders of the victims. but we should get more information tomorrow. the arson team will be here tomorrow morning and that is standard when bodies are found inside of a home burned in a residential fire. ken pritchett, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. today we learned the security breach at target during the holiday shopping season was larger than thought. now it is between 70 and 100 tell million effected. ktvu's tom vacar reports a new
