this will change if this brazen arsonist strikes again. this is a sketch of the suspected firebug that officials are hoping to catch the suspect. and talking about the similars between the fire. >> reporter: the arsonist has struck a church, commercial building and several residences like this overnight. authorities think he is sticking to an area he knows well, striking in the overnight hours and using ordinary debrises to start the fire. they released this sketch. he has been spotted on surveillance video near several of the scenes and investigators say he looks familiar to the video obtained by ktvu. >> just hope he is going to be contained quickly. >> reporter: until then neighbors are taking action, clearing debris and

anything that might burn. >> we're going to be vigilant and watching. >> it makes you stay up at night and wondering if it could be me? >> reporter: there have been ten fires from downtown san josi, eight confirmed arson, the most recent a home on east st. john. this man rescued the two people trapped inside. >> i feel good, because they are my neighbors. >> reporter: with more fires between 2:00 6:00 a.m., authorities fear others may not be so lucky. this arson investigator asked we not show his face, but say the fires are similar, started with ordinary debris and without accelerants. >> we have had newspapers put in through a mail slot or inside of a building and set on fire. >> reporter: he says the arsonist seems to be evolving. last night venturing outside of his normal area, but with each fire they hope for more clues and a better understanding of what makes him tick. >> like revenge and spite, there are people that do it for economic reasons. some people have mental illness. i don't know what is causing

this person to want to light fires. >> reporter: authorities want the public's help and now offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in this case. live in san josi, ann rubin, ktvu channel 2 news. here again is a sketch of the person investigators want to question. he is described as white or latinor, 25-40 years old between 6'and 6'2". he has a thin build and weighs about 160-180 pounds, but investigators say he may be wearing baggy clothing and glasses to conceal his identity. in san josi, police continue to look for a suspect and the motive in the city's second homicide of the year. investigators say a man was reported lying on the sidewalk at willow glen way near the al medin expressway with stab wounds. police say the victim's identity won't be released his his family is notified. staying in san josi, the

highway patrol is investigating the death of a pedestrian on interstate 60. the chairperson says it's not clear why, but the victim was was hit by a driver who left the scene. the victim was then struck by a taxi, the cabdriver stopped and called for help. the man's name has not been released. well, now to our very dry bay area winter that today finally, finally included a little rain. drizzle is probably a little more accurate. >> right. this is what it looks like in downtown san francisco this afternoon. while a little more than a mist or drizzle, the umbrellas came out and the windshield wipers were turned on. >> that same weather system brought snow to the sierras. skiers and snowboarders hit the slopes during the first measurable snowfall for the tahoe area in several areas. >> ktvu meteorologist mark tamayo is here with the small

rain totals, but, you know what? we'll take it. >> we have been talking about the front over the past couple of days. really not generous are the rainfall total and, in fact, some neighborhoods not even measurable amounts. here is the latest on live stormtracker 2. going back in time, you can see basically just a cloud-producer and even a few scattered very light showers across the region. the latest right now as you notice the main cloud bed to the south and east. the live doppler sweeps trying to pick up additional rainfall, but that is not the case. just a few clouds developing to the north. we were advertising the system to be mostly a rainfall producer in the north bay and that verified nicely. san francisco only picking up mt. 01". targeting parts of the north bay, you can see most of the amounts toward oxi dental, .3 erin and all of that activity shifting to the south and east. we have a changing weather pattern. coming up, timing the gusty winds in the hills and we'll have that latest in the

newscast. a reminder you can follow mark and the rest of our ktvu weather team on-line for the latest on the conditions outside. they are posting updates to twitter and facebook even when we are not on the air. concerns about the flu led to crowded bay area clinics today. health overtimes are trying to provide a flu shot to everyone who wants it after the flu was declared widespread here in california. across the country, people ages 18 to 64 account for more than 60% of reported hospitalized cases. coming up a little bitter later at 10:30, the changes being made here in the bay area to meet growing demand. a cousin of oscar grant will reportedly receive $125,000 as a settlement from the city of oakland after being shot by an oakland police officer. tony jones was shot in the back trying to run away from police who said they saw his vehicle at an armed robbery. jones was convicted of the robbery, but he sued the city

for $10 million claiming police used unreasonable force. the chronicle reports that the settlement is expected to be approved later this month. people gathered in san francisco today to honor lives lost to violence in the past year. the second annual prayer walk for peace wound through the city's mission district this morning. the memorial is organized by the archdiocese of san francisco. marchers carried 50 crosses to remember those killed in 2013. speakers told the crowd that the time to take action is now. >> don't wait until violence comes to our house, because it could be a bullet that hits you in the middle of a street when you are driving. it could be anybody, anywhere. >> throughout the year the archdiocese's restorative justice ministry organizes the prayer service at the site of a homicide. hopes for a playoff game at

the scorched scene until tomorrow. >> it was pretty big. >> reporter: dinnertime, friday, residents of this house suddenly realized their neighbor's place is burning. >> i really didn't think that sort of thing would happen. >> reporter: two people died in the small one story home built 65 years ago. a fire station is right down the street, but arriving crews found the house already engulfed. a fire that started suddenly and moved swiftly. >> this kitchen window blew out, flames shooting high. it appears that the kitchen was where the fire started. >> i talked to them maybe a month or two ago. >> reporter: the resident was a man in his 50s with health problems of he didn't go out much. >> heard he was a vietnam vet. >> reporter: a caregiver apparently lived with him, but the neighbor himself was quiet, reclusive. >> i think the family owned the house for decades. i don't know, but i would have assumed he grew up there. >> reporter:

neighbors are shocked and saddened at the lives lost, but also very relieved that the fire didn't spread. >> i was pretty worried, yeah, yeah. i have never seen a fire that close. >> reporter: police and fire investigators are holding off on examining the house until tomorrow, because it is safer to be in and to breathe in after it has settled for a bit. reporting live in palo alto, debora villalon, ktvu channel 2 news. today we learned the name of a man who died in a house fire last night in unincorporated walnut creek. he has been identified as 62- year-old charles mcdonald. crews responded to the fire on hilltop cressent near spring side road at about 9:30 p.m. mcdonald's body was found on the second floor of the home. a woman inside was able to escape. it took firefighters about half an hour to get the fire under control. investigators searching for an armed bank robber on the

peninsula are hoping a distinctive piece of clothing might give him away. they released this surveillance photo of the suspected robber, wearing a cap with a zebra print trim. sheriff's deputies say he pointed a gulp at teller at chase bank on south el camino in millbrae yesterday afternoon. he is described as a thin black man, about 5'6" tall. bad weather heavennered efforts to recover the body of a bay area man and his family who died in a plane crash last month in the mountains of idaho. software engineer dale smith and his son and daughter-in-law were killed. yesterday a private search team including smith's brother found the plan of local authorities plan to meet monday to consider ways to recover the wreckage. an online petition calling on contra costa prosecutors to drop a battery charge against a transgender teen now has more

announced the lip between smoking and lung cancer. at that time 432% of american adults smoked. that number is now down to 19% today, but health officials say smoking-related illnesses still kill more than 440,000 americans every year. tempters continue to flare in west virginia where a while leak has kept 300,000 people from using water for the past three days. interest has been a run on bottled water and water from fema is being handed out as an emergency measure. at least five people have now been hospitalized. a chemical used to process coal spilled into the river, could be tam nateing the water supply. there is no time estimate on how long it will take to flush the water system of that contaminant. san pablo police say 2013 was the city's first year without a single homicide in 27 years. the east bay city says other violent crime also drained,

rape down 57%, robberies were down 30% and aggravated assault fell 1% last year. police credit the use of technology, such as surveillance cameras, also along with the community involvement for helping to reduce violent crime in the city. there were seven homicides in 2012. nationally park officials have extended deadline for comment on a controversial plan for dogs at recreational areas; notre including crissy field and muir beach. the recreation area requires leashes in some areas where dogs run free now. congresswoman nancy pelosi worked with dog owners to get the deadline extended to february 18th. >> the first major retailer to accept a virtual currency called bitcoin says it racked up more than $125,000 in sales in just the first 24 hours.
