the homes that burned are located in the southern tip. there are no fire trucks in this area so fire boats were called in. we begin with jana katsuyama where she spoke to two people who said they had to evacuate tonight from sherman island. >> reporter: that's right, frank. a pretty tough day. we're at the landing where people have been coming and going. off in the distance you can be able so see where the fire is still smoldering. there are others who are still over there watching this fire and lucky so far that no one has been hurt. >> reporter: when flames and smoke rose from the island around 3:30 this afternoon. tim art and son joe jumped into their boat and went across the

river to try to save their cabin. >> my hairs actually singed. >> reporter: they managed to put the fire controlled until they had to leave suddenly. >> the fire got to it and the coastties made it leave because of the danger. >> reporter: fire crews from rio vista, montesuma came in to fight the fire. calfire brought in a helicopter to help fight it by air. the island had very heavy dry brush. >> once crews got over there. we found that there was about 20 structures on the island. three have confirmed to be live. >> the flames were like 40 feet in the air. >> reporter: fire crews say no one was hurt but for those who watched neighboring cabins or their own property burn it was

a tough day. >> we lost a riding lawn mower, a generator, generator shed, water tower tank and everything. but the cabin itself is still there. >> reporter: it's been a tough day too for the firefighters out there. just a few hours ago we got them coming back by boat and returning to their fire trucks. we also understand that the coast guard evacuated four people from the island and solano county officials say as of 5:00 tonight all residents have been accounted for. reporting live in antioch, jana katsuyama, ktvu channel 2 news. now to chief meteorologist bill martin and that red flag fire alert in effect the tonight, bill. >> reporter: that red flag warning for the north bay hills and the east bay hills has been extended into thursday morning. so this is going to be around for a while. it's in effect now. that antioch fire sort of out of the area. that's out of the surface. the red flag warning is in the hills. gusts at 20 miles per hour possible tonight. we had humidities down into the low teens and we look at some of the wind gusts we're looking at wind gusts right now about 25 miles per hour in the east

bay hills. when i come back in about 10 minutes or so. i'm going to talk about the record highs we saw today and the potential for more record warmth tomorrow. we'll see you back here. it was less than a year ago when another fire burned that same area of the delta. the fire last march on sherman island sent out a cloud of black smoke and initially raised a lot of concern. in the end it mostly burned tully grass. in about five hours it burned itself out. in general those fires are not considered hazardous. breaking news from san francisco, where the bomb squad has detonated a device of some kind. officers blew up the device just before 9:00. neighbors described it as very loud and neighbor called it

frightening. streets were blocked off. buses were rerouted. we'll bring you more later in this newscast. for a second consecutive night it's been quiet in a neighborhood where there's been a number of deliberate fires. but neighbors are still on edge and keeping an eye out for the arsonist. ken wayne has the latest. >> reporter: tonight san jose police say they are taking the lead in what is a joint police and fire investigation. and we also have new video to show you, home surveillance video showing someone actually setting one of these on fire in the front porch. tonight we talked to the couple who lived in this burned out cottage, they said they're lucky to have made it out alive. dinner in a plate. not for the people who lived here but for the cats who live

>> it's a scary thing to see that he, you know walked in front of your home that many times. >> reporter: neighbors are scared he will strike again, sharon lavinia is devastated. despite losing the home seeks not vengeance for the arsonist but help. >> i think he's very sick. what he needed to do was turn himself in so he can get proper medical care. >> reporter: investigators have put the number of deliberately set fires at 15. but it has been quiet the last few nights. ken pritchett. police in san jose are investigating a homicide that left one man dead this evening. if shooting happened at eden avenue west of 17 and campbell. officers responded to several reports of shots fired in the area. when they arrived at the scene they saw a man down in the street. >> dispatch when they arrived they found a male suffering from at least one gunshot

wound. paramedics responded to the scene and pronounced him deceased at the scene. >> no suspects have been arrested. an 82-year-old man from oakland is still in intensive care two weeks after he was brutally beaten. tonight police are asking for hymn -- police are asking for help. investigators released this picture today of the victim 82- year-old pham. pham is not able to talk. he also suffered broken ribs and several fractures to his face during the attack. anyone with information on the case is asked to call police. now the the peninsula where police in south san francisco are looking for a man who exposed himself to high school cheer leaders. david stevenson spoke to the teens they say it happened right on campus. >> reporter: parents and students at south san francisco high school are upset after a naked man walked into a girl's

locker room last night and exposed himself to five cheer leaders. >> we all ran together. we were scared. >> reporter: three of the girls this afternoon described to us what he did next as they huddled together in the locker room. >> he made some gestures to us and we just got scared. >> he didn't say anything. he was just like standing there staring at us. and i didn't yell because i thought maybe he would come at us if we made any noise. >> reporter: eventually the man left. one of the girls called 911. they spent this afternoon again talking to police. >> we have talked to school officials about coming up with a safety plan. they have safety plans in place already. and basically all they can do now is be extra vigilant. >> reporter: custodial staff were on campus but not in the area at the time. >> we did have staff there at the time. we just need to be more communicative. >> we did not have supervision

when it happened. >> reporter: the parents of the one of the girls wants cameras around the school. >> other schools have cameras to see who comes in and goes out. >> reporter: in south san francisco, david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. bay area health officials are confirming two more deaths tonight from the h1n1 swine flu. today solano county reported the first swine death of the season. san m ateo county reported a third flu death today. it did not provide any further details. we've been in touch with all health officials in all nine bay area counties. by all counts there's been a total of 17 deaths from the flu in the bay area. all of the victims are younger than 65. and tonight at 10:30, a bay area jail turning away visitors because of the flu. the restrictions that are now

from last year. officers from san jose teamed up with officers in humble county to arrest 20-year-old andrew rog. - - rodriguez. rodriguez is charged with killing hernandez last year. the shooting happened on west san carlos street and was gang related. another suspect has been taken into custody with the beating and execution style killing of a 16-year-old boy last june. the suspect is also a juvenile. the 17-year-old was taken into custody in lakewood washington. he and six others are expected to face trial for the gang related murder of manuel orzoa. raheena hebraheim is from asian and attended cal state.

the case began back in 2005, she was arrested at the san francisco airport while on her way home to malasia. she was told she could not return. the government's no fly list includes people suspected of having ties to terrorism. seniors who volunteer with the chp are apparently saving the agency hundreds of thousands of dollars by freeing up officers to do the work that only officers can do. ktvu's noelle walker went on a ride along today to show us how the program works and also the push to expand it. >> reporter: every little boy dreams of riding in a patrol car. as a kid. arthur coffee looked up to the indiana state police. >> they had the slickest uniform. >> reporter: at 78, this retiree is living the dream. with uniform and all. >> i didn't see it on his

new information about school shooting in roswell new mexico. a 12-year-old boy who's in the school band pulled a shotgun from his instrument case this morning and shot two classmates. a teacher at barriendo middle school was then able to talk him into dropping the weapon and surrendering. one victim a boy is in critical condition. the over a girl is in satisfactory condition. a witness says that she thinks that the suspect may have been a bullying victim. and justin bieber's home was searched today. one person staying at bieber's

amidst rising flu concerns, elm wood correctional center is confirming an outbreak. there's now 11 suspected cases among its inmates. amber lee is live with what the santa clara county is doing to stop the spread of the flu, amber. >> reporter: elm wood is now limiting the movement of 270 inmates that are both men and women who live in four dorms that are affected. elm wood is not allowing visitors into the areas affected by the h1n1 virus. except for the inmates attorneys. we have learned that the confirmed and suspected cases involved both male and female inmates. >> it just can spread so

dry warm weather has created extreme wildfire conditions in that area. bay area grape growers are keeping a weary eye on this long stretch of dry weather. ktvu's rob roth returns from sonoma county on the steps some wineries are already taking to deal with a prospect of a continued drought. >> a normal winter conditions we would be sinking up to our ankles right now. >> reporter: these owners of the winery at sebastapol would bewalking through mud. but there's little that's normal these days in dry wine country. >> this is the driest season we've had so far in my 25 year career. >> reporter: so far this year less than 3-inches. the vineyard does have well water to tap into. some wineries don't. >> each one of these buds -- >> reporter: the biggest immediate concern is having enough water to protect the buds against frost which can cause severe damage. >> we're trying to protect the

they're looking for the people responsible for a large marijuana grow. firefighters say they found the marijuana plants when they were called out to a fire last night. a neighbor says he first smelled something like a skunk around 9:00 last night on hidden glen drive. he says when he went outside he saw fire coming from an electrical box at his neighbors house. when firefighters arrive on the scene they found some 950 marijuana plants growing throughout the two story home. no one was at the home when firefighters arrived. and in palo al to -- alto, investigators say the fire started in the kitchen but because of all the damage they can't term the exact cause. the fire claimed the lives of two best friends. both of whom were 64 years old. san francisco prosecutors say the two prime suspects in a deadly nightclub brawl three years ago have pleaded not

guilty to charges including involuntary manslaughter. 25-year-old tracy long of san jose and 36-year-old wynn are charged in connection with a 2011 death of a ucsf medical student at temp nightclub on howard street. 30-year-old joe hernandez was hit on the head during the fight and was found unconscious on the floor of the club. he died two days later at san francisco general hospital. potentially dangerous chemicals including asbestos, mercury and lead paint have been detected at san francisco state university. school leaders have locked up the campus until the toxins are cleaned up. it's winter break right now but 65 students and staff typically use the lab. weather that is going to break some records.

more now on tonight's breaking news from san francisco where the bomb squad detonated an explosive device. the device was found in a home there. officers blew up the device just before 9:00. the detonation apparently sparked a fire. and the store owner also told us that the man who lived in the house where the suspicious device was found had died recently and people have been clearing it out for the last
