is apple on the outs as company's earnings fail to impress investors? in today's cover story... addressing the nation. president obama takes center stage tonight-- what's on his agenda.. plus... a new plan by amazon and walmart to make grocery shopping a thing of the past. . and....a guide to "guilt free" investing. first business starts now! good morning! it's tuesday, january 28th. i'm angela miles. in today's first look: it's another anxious trading day. stocks lost more ground monday-- along wth sell offs in gold and oil here's what''s critical to

technical traders. the s&p 500 closed last at 17- 82. the next important line of support is 17-75. if the market ends below that level, the market could continue a rough tumble. what worries the market--- is the 2 day federal reserve meeting getting underway toda and apple's earnings outlook was weaker than predicted. it's an extra busy day for the bond market, glenn schultz of performance trust joins us now and will the bonds be stressing over the fed meeting that gets under way today ? and then the president speaks tonight? >in terms of the bond market and the quantitative using program of the federal reserve's,my expectation is that the federal reserve will continue on their quantitative easing program and they're going to continue on the type tapering of that program. so we are likely going to see another $10 billion reduction in the large-

scale assets purchase program which is gonna put the federal reserve on track to end the large scale asset's purchase program sometime in the second quarter of this year. so far the economic data that coming out really supports that decision. should investors start to prepare for some sort of bond crash? say if all of a sudden and interest rates go sky high and the decline happens to be huge in the bond market. > i don't think i would call it so much as a bond bust or a bond fallout. i definitely think that we are at the lows in interest rates. obviously we are going to mean revert, meaning that we're probably going to go back to historical norms. which means that we're going to experience higher interest rates. of course that's what happened over a period of time, so the federal reserve has pledged to hold short rates down through 2015 and that's going to provide an anchor on the rest of the yield curve. so what we are going to see is economic data comes in as a large scale asset purchase program kind of comes to an end and then as we see economy begin to recover and pick up even more steam in the global economy sink up with the u.s. economy definitely interest rates are going to be on the rise. thank you glenn

the call to raise the minimum wage. "i think he'd have to bring it up to a 'livable wage,' $14-15 an hour, not the watered-down amount he's talking about." but not everyone believes the president will spend political capital there. "he's probably not going to talk aout the minimum wage because that takes congress to pass and congress isn't going to do it, anyway." those watching the housing sector to reflect a stronger job market are concerned about interest rates rising too fast. "the housing market is not fully recovered and if rates go up too fast, buyers will stop spending very quickly." other issues such as gun control, stalled in congress and immigration reform, which may be headed to a compromise will likely be mentioned but health reform remain costs still very hard for joel freimuth's business clients to calculate and thus, is stalling expansion. that propane gas shortage, what's happening there? what's the play? you know i think what it is, is that the demand for propane has been exceptionally high this winter with farmers trying to dry off their crop and we had a big pipeline outage as well. and nobody expected the demand to be this strong. for years we've had warmer than normal winters and so farmers when they filled their tanks, they were pretty much good for the entire winter, not so this winter. we've had like 3 winters all rolled into a couple of weeks and there's more winter to go. that squeezes those prices and they continue to be squeezed. thank you phil. the fa-a is ordering a safety check of more than 400 boeing "767 jets." the agency is concerned that the jets movable tail sections could jam and possibly cause pilots to lose control of the aircraft. the wall street journal reports some carriers have replaced the parts in question already to avert taking the 767's out of service for inspection. lion air is canceling its order for 787 dreamliners from boeing.. indonesia's biggest carrier is instead going with the smaller 737 models. the airline plansto place a new order for aircraft

if you have ever wondered if it's possible to invest in companies that match your religious beliefs.. our guest this morning says yes... deena carr: who runs a business called finanace according to your faith.. and joins me one set this morning and why do you do this deena? > well, the reason why i do this is because i find that people really ultimately manage their financial lives according to their values. in that which you believe then, is that with your going to do? and so people were like, " i'd like to invest, i'd like to do a number of things, but how do i do that in a way that i can sleep at night and that i feel like this is something that i can be proud of? " so what will be some of your stock picks? > well, i think that here is my value system. sometimes people feel very strongly about things in the environment and feel like we have a responsibility to do that. others feel very positive about technology. so they feel very good about retailers' like apple or feel really good about google and things like that. but they may feel bad about people that they feel destroyed the environment so they may not invest in an oil company and things like that. so, the beautiful part about it is you can invest however you choose to and still be successful and have great returns. specifically those, according to your religion; what would be a good company?
4:17 am
> just to be honest, i never said this is your particular faith so i'm going to invest according to this religion, unless you're going to invest in a business that is doing something. whether that is a for-profit or nonprofit organization, you say " i like what they do in terms of missions, i like saint jude hospital so i'm going to invest in st. jude because i like what they do. " i try not to make sure that people take it all the way to the point of my religion says that i should do thatcause then i think that you get into another set of problems. but if the values which hold so many of us together lead you to say i believe in children, i believe in helping and health care and water. then invest in those things. so that's why i personally would like investing in st. jude. how are those returns compared to somebody who's going into the so-called sin stocks? > i think the returns are exactly the same and that it's about when you put your money in, when you take it out, how consistent you are. i don't think that just because you decided to invest in a sin stock that it's going to plummet, you're gonna do bad. i don't think that god sits and watches over us in that way. i do believe that your returns, i've invest according to my
4:18 am
values andi've done very well. i have had double-digit returns but guess what, if i invested in gold because i believe in it and i think it's a good thing, and i made good money but i held did these last few months i would have lost the money. so it's not a nirvana, it still comes down to the fundamental of economics and investing that we learn and must always apply. and we all have free choices, thanks for coming on the show today. > absolutely, thank you coming up.... will apple get sliced in market action-- find out what could be ahead post earnings.. plus...what has two corporations suddenly going "door to door." bill moller steps in right after the break.. stay with us!

companies are forever looking for a new edge - ways to carve out a little extra market share - before a competitor gets there. a new frontier opening up is grocery delivery. kinda like what pea-pod has been doing for years. well, big retailers wal-mart
4:22 am
and amazon are dabbling in that buisiness. so what's pea pod doing? hoping to head 'em off at the pass. brigid sweeney of crains wrote about this. brigid, first, what are the 2 new players on pea pod's turf doing doing? >well, they're frankly not new they've been here for a couple of years but amazon and wal- mart are basically testing the waters that the pea pod has been swimming in since 2001. they're trying to do same day delivery of groceries and frankly same day delivery is kind of the ultimate what the consumers want and it's something that pea pod does not deliver, they do next day delivery. what is amazon and wal-mart do when are they actually putting money into this and building facilities? > they all are. they are using existing facilities for right now and they're testing them in test markets on the west coast. amazon is testing in a couple of places in california, wal- mart is also in the west coast area just testing the market to see if people are willing to pay for this, really want this.
4:23 am
you talked with co- founder and chief technology officer for pea pod, what is he doing? > he is trying extremely hard to ramp up their own production or their own warehouse facilities across the country on the east coast and in chicago. building larger ones, they're fully automated. in some ways they resemble the amazon warehouses with the robots and the automation. but he also is creating a pickup spot for people who can commit to the two hour delivery window at a grocery stores on the east coast including giants and stop and shop, you can pick up your pea pod delivery there. and he is getting into office supplies? > yes, he is also trying to do both. he mentioned that it is very nascent, it's not really a thing yet. he is definitely trying to expand into delivery of other nonperishable items. he also wants to start delivering groceries to businesses because they are a very regular repeat business. very quickly how big of a market is this, can everyone play in the sandbox? > it's hard to say the first time around during the first
4:24 am
dot com era, everyone got into the grocery delivery. everyone from whole foods to web vans which was one of the biggest bust during the era, a bigger bust than pets dot com. everyone thought that the food delivery and online food orders where the next big thing. people like to touch their produce, they like to pick their own apples, pick their own fruit. it's a hard sell, however it's becoming a bigger and is the really big market now. brigid's sweeny with crane, thank you so much! >thank you. thanks bill... still to come a traders' take on amazon, google, and what was was so un-apeeling about apple's earnings.. chart talk is next

apple reported robust revenue after the close last night but that stock could run into trouble today, joining us now is matt shapiro president of the m w s capital. what do you
4:28 am
think here matt? > will you know i want the stock to do well but, the results don't show the growth that investors want and i expect the stock to be under pressure today. the did they had to do. they beat the revenue numbers, they beat the earnings number of 14 1/2 dollars a share. they're paying a big dividend, there doing everything they can but they just didn't quite sell as many hand sets as analysts wanted even though their gross margins were at the high-end of the rage. the thing that is definitely troubling investors was their revenue forecast for next quarter which is gonna show no growth year-over-year and it was less than analysts expected. do you own the stock in which to buy it at current levels? > i do own the stock. now certainly as you know viewers out there have deemphasized it over the last few years. it's not one of my major holdings, but it's become a value play
4:29 am
here and lot of investors had good luck with it in the 400 that it rose to $550. so again look, icon is in the mix here try to get cash return to shareholders. it's still a very profitable company but investors of course are going to have to wait a little bit for more growth. what about amazon and google, when you watch for earnings coming from either one of those big tech companies this week? > well again, what's been going on is google is an unstoppable in investors love everything they do, same for amazon. they can report quarter wheresome kind of metric does this seem to matter in the stock as they down and then up $40 the next day, but we will have to see. i would like to see how apple earnings the supplemental shapes out over the next couple of weeks given that we've had a correction in the market. so we will see if amazon and google provide some more traction for us. thank you for your help today matt. >you got it. that's it for now.. comiing up tomorrow-- inside secrets on how ceo's stay in shape.. from all of us at first business.. thank you for watching.
