watch this evening. ken pritchett is live at the sierra. and we begin with bill martin and the rain here in the bay area. >> we got some rain today but check out this rain that's coming. check out this plume as it stretches back to the hawaiian islands. it's headed our way. not for tonight not for tomorrow but as we head into the bay area weekend it's going to get wet. how wet? take a look at today's numbers. it was a nice looking storm this morning. we had numbers you will see them popping in here this morning. 1 inch, .75 of an inch. as we head into the bay area weekend these numbers will be tripled and quadrupled in some places. we could see a half a foot of rain. when i come back we will have a time line for that weekend rain that's going to be a big one we'll see you back here. now to ken pritchett who's in the sierra right now. with the accumulating snow.

and what it all means for our water supply, ken. >> reporter: it may look like we have quite a bit of snow here at blue canyon but take a look at this. that's if i'm generous maybe 2- inches of snow. there's much more snow on the ground closer to the summit. as far as snowfall this really is about as heavy as we have seen all day long with an expectation of a much bigger storm this weekend. with a heavy snow hits the sierra you will find two kinds of people. those who love it and those putting on chains and dealing with driving who don't. >> it's horrible. horrible. >> reporter: this snow piling up should be a welcomed sight with california. the february snow pack measured at just 12% of normal. after this storm and recent storms, automatic readings of today's snow pack says it has inched up to 15% of normal for this date. this is the summit at around 7,000 feet you can see where

i'm walking right now. the snow is about six to 8 inches deep. but in february, the snow right here should be much deeper. waste deep at least. but what sets the series of storms apart in an otherwise normal winter is that snow measures in feet not inches. the storm's immediate benefit is for the ski resorts. >> we could get upwards of over 2 feet by saturday. >> reporter: boreal ski resort says this storm has already dropped 5-inches with more expected this weekend. >> it's nice, good to have some snow. it's been real dry. i've been wanting to come up for a long time. >> reporter: this storm is certainly good news but we will need a lot more of this. state water officials said last week that we would need a big storm every other day until may to get the snow pack back to normal. at blue canyon, ken pritchett, ktvu channel 2 news. the highway patrol says a

woman from the san jose area was struck and killed on interstate 80 in the sierra tonight. the chp says a woman with a passenger in the car that skidded off the road near springs tonight. a good samaritan was trying to pull the car back on to the roadway. that's when the driver of a black lexus lost control and hit the woman. >> the person that got hit you would think that you were well off the roadway and they probably felt they were in a relatively safe position when this collision happened. >> reporter: the chp says snow was falling at the time. so far no word on the woman's name. a 2-year-old child is expected to recover after being hit by a car in oakland. it happened on 11th avenue near east 18th street at about 4:30 this afternoon. the driver remained on the scene and cooperated. the child suffered a head injury and cut above the eye but we're told the injuries are not considered to be life

threatening. an alleged crime at san jose state university and how the university dealt with bullying on campus. jana katsuyama was there and tells us concerned students filled a room to hear how the university plans to improve racial -- on campus. >> reporter: the 18th person task force included students, staff and the community. they came to hear how the school is going to address

bullying against a student. their focus was on a 405 page university commission investigation which stated the four young students targeted a student with racial slurs, hung up a confederate flag and put a lock on a student's neck. >> we're talking about a well known widely publicized symbol of hatred. that flag is used as a symbol of intimidation. it's used to threaten people. staff never said, wait a second. we need to look at what's going on here, nobody stopped. >> reporter: nobody did investigate or alert authorities quickly. >> we don't know if our staff aren't being trained properly period or they're not being trained properly on african american issues i think that needs to be looked at. >> reporter: some feel there's a campus culture to allow

racial intimidations to go unreported. >> a lot of students feel like there's not a lot being done for them. not just african american students all students. >> i think we're all here to see to it that all are taken into account. >> reporter: the next meeting is friday february 21st. jana katsuyama, ktvu news. the napa county coroner has released the body of 3-year-old kayle slecher to her father's family. the girl's mother sarah kruger and her boyfriend are behind bars accused of her death. the father of kaylee is an inmate at san quentin to it's likely that her father's family will claim the body.

48-year-old patrick brunnin faces four felony accounts of arson. the largest fire tore through a warehouse and ended up causing $5 million in damage. fortunately no one was seriously injured in any of the fires. brennan is due back in court tomorrow night. an oakland police officer is under investigation and could end up losing his job after an early morning incident at the i hop. >> reporter: at 2:40 sunday morning while talking to a waitress, someone pulled out a gun. >> this is an oakland police officer. >> reporter: the officer is being reported as kevin kelly. he was talking to a waitress and told her she was an officer while trying to impress her. >> my understanding from the victim is that the firearm was

brandished at her and then toward the sky. toward the ceiling of the restaurant. >> reporter: it's unclear if kelly pointed the gun at the waitress but the incident spooked her so she told her coworkers who called police. >> there's a criminal investigation here that's been followed by our district attorney's office. >> reporter: the oakland police department is conducting their own investigation. kelly was taken into custody and brought here for investigation. he was sited and released by police kept his gun for evidence. >> officers can carry their own weapons of choice when they're off duty. >> reporter: kelly graduate with this academy class last march. oakland police sources tell us that officers are not allowed to consume alcohol while armed. san francisco police said kelly admitted to drinking last saturday night. opd released a statement saying we're conducting an investigation. sources tell me that since

kelly is still on probation this is potentially a fireable offense. john sasaki, ktvu news. officials from the state contractors license board raided a company that made safeguard tubs. we've learned that they were looking for financial records stemming from consumer complaints alleging things such as overcharging and false advertising. safeguard tubs are walk-in style bathtubs often geared at seniors. the state independent system offered an alert. the alert was prompted by freezing weather in other parts of the u.s. and canada. during a flex alert, they ask

sweatshirt. new information tonight about the 62-year-old woman who was killed by hayward police on tuesday. today they identified her as ariel levy. she left behind a suicide note saying she was distraught about recent family problems. authorities also say she had a fake gun in her hand when police opened fire and killed her. her 23-year-old son was arrested last month after undercover police found guns and drugs in the apartment that he shared with his mother. organizers for last year's bottle rock festival in napa have filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy. court documents claim that the festival paid too much for performers. another production company has bought the rights for the festival and plans to put another bottle rock festival this may. this most recent storm has increased the flow in creeks

and aqua ducts around the region. crews were outlooking for potential flooding where debris may have clogged up water ways. as far as the drought, officials say there's still a long way to tkpw to get california out -- to come -- long way for california to come out of its drought. well obviously all this rain is welcome news for bay area farmers and ranchers who rely on water for crops and livestock. in san francisco it's boosting interest in rain barrels. as ktvu's paul stevenson reports the city is now encouraging people to hang on to some of that water for when the storms have moved on. >> reporter: that knocking noise is the sound of saved

rainwater. hundreds of gallons used to quench the kid's vegetable garden. weeks of dry weather nearly drained the 3,000-gallon tank. >> this time last year our cistern was overflowing. this time we're down 1/5 of the cistern volume. >> we even see developers putting in 90,000-gallon cisterns. >> reporter: thanks to an incentive program, the utilities commission says residents have installed hundreds of these backyard cisterns in the past year. this do it yourself video gives people tips. >> this is where all the rainwater pulls up and enters one of these drains. >> reporter: with drainage pools surrounding water from the roof to the basement sent

to plants. the puc treats its water with uv light but home cisterns are not required to because that water is meant for plants not food. the national weather service says there could be enough rainfall now to the side of mount diablo. most of the fire damage was on state parkland on the eastern side of the mountain. current rainfall rates are the heaviest since september when the flames burned vegetation on more than 3,100 acres. here rego tomorrow morning's forecast. 7:00a.m. we're going to be mostly cloudy conditions but should be dry on the roads as we go into the afternoon hours, the clouds thicken up. scattered showers this is just the beginning of that moisture. tropical moisture streaming into the area. lunchtime it starts to get very wet in the north bay.

an all girls catholic high school in the east bay apologized after students announced a black history menu that upset a lot of people. the menu included fried chicken, corn bread and watermelon. the staff say that it's their understanding that the menu was planned in part by students without staff approval or permission. >> they thought this was a very clever way in their own way of celebrating black history month. it was as simple and naive as that. >> reporter: the school sent a letter to parents saying in no

odometer is being doctored. >> reporter: a lot of people thought this problem went away when the car switched from the old odometers like this one to the newer digital ones. turns out these are even easier to roll back and it happened in over 200,000 cars in california last year. 212,000-mile becomes just 37,000. someone on you tube rolled the miles way back on this red vw. ken didn't know he had been duped until his engine blew. >> the first thing that goes through your mind is, my car is not running and i'm in the middle of the freeway. >> reporter: a report showed that his odometer had been rolled back. you could have bought a car

with 300,000 miles on it. >> yeah, without knowing it. >> reporter: his truck was one of more than 290,000 rolled back vehicles in california, the most of any state. >> odometer fraud is the biggest fraud. people don't know it's happening. >> reporter: this little device -- >> will plug in the information you want. >> reporter: has made rolling back odometers easier than ever. hardly a secret based on videos we found on the internet. >> in previous years we would get a few cases rolling in now it seems the flood gates are open. >> we recovered 50 odometers in two cases. >> reporter: moving vehicles between the bay area and the central valley to try to cover their tracks, they everyone altered car titles to show the

a mother says that robbers took something that can never be replaced. her dead son's urn. >> i was devastated. who would take my son's ashes. take everything else just don't take that. there's no value in it except to me. >> reporter: williams wants the particulars particulars -- burglars to give the ashes back and she says they know where she lives. children are being used and abused in a war in syria. the u.n. says all parties have committed grave violations against children since the fighting began almost three years ago. it accuses the syrian government of sexually abusing children in government detention. and says opposition fighters have recruited children tortured them and used them as civilian shields. it's estimated at least 10,000 children have been killed. now to the south bay where prosecutors hope an unusual

lisa kept the document. she tweets they haven't been able to pinpoint how "is a slut" became my middle name but they're still investigating. officemax sent an illinois man a letter referred with daughter killed in car crash. officemax says they got their mailing list from a third party company. she feels golden key is responsible for the mix up but she is still wondering why the word slut made it into her name and how bank of america didn't catch it. now lisa also tweeted that she believes bank of america and golden key shares her information rather than selling her information. she also tweeted that both companies were very apologetic and they took full responsibility for the mix up. live in san francisco, cristina rendon, channel 2 news. the decision makers at facebook have agreed to bend

their own rules after a tearful plea from a father went viral. >> my son passed away january 28, 2012. and we can't access his facebook account. >> reporter: almost a million and a half people have viewed the video from john berlin since it was posted on you tube yesterday. berlin is from missouri, his 21- year-old son died from a viral infection and now he wants to see his son's look back video. those are the minute long movies that highlight a users time on facebook. facebook has now agreed to make the video available to berlin in a few days. shares of silicon valley sank lower today.

linked in said it expected shares to drop lower this year. the dow gained 188 points, nasdaq rose 45. investors reacted to a report that showed jobless claims fell last week. oakland city officials have decided to cancel tomorrow's first friday event because of all the rain headed our way. many of the outdoor vendors don't have at -- tents to shield them our their merchandise from the rain. the art walk will still be taking place. which mean it is art galleries in oakland will be open. and in fact, we do have rain on the way. it is an incredible dry december. pretty dry january here we come into february and things are shaping up nicely. we have a couple of weather systems. one came in today. we have some rain showing up tomorrow. as we go into the bay area weekend it's really going to light up. look at the rainfall totals. especially in the north bay up

in the basin. some areas with .5 of rain. you're going to put a lot of water in the reservoirs. the reason for that let the moisture plume. it's almost out to the date line and the it is coming up over the hawaii island. with tons of moisture. tomorrow night, the radar will be lit up. i have them all swinging up. tomorrow night at this time it's really going to get going. we're going to have some good green the show you. overnight lows will be in the overnight 40s. look for patchy fog. there's that moisture plume thousands of miles, a couple of thousand miles of it. as it streams up over the jet stream. heaviest rain will be in the north. kind of messy up there in santa rosa north. we'll see scattered showers around here. then on the weekend periods of heavy rain especially saturday when we could easily see an urban and small stream fire advisory and we'll see gusty winds as well.

the computer model takes us into the night. the rain starts in the south bay. look at the fire hose. it's right in the bay area. then moves through there's saturday afternoon. here we go into saturday evening more showers and the whole time, it hasn't stopped them in the mountains. sunday morning it breaks up a little bit but it stays wet. not as heavy now that the rainfall amounts will be much less. it's going to be a wet weekend around here. you figured that one out. overnight lows will be in the 40s. 55 in fairfield and 58 in san jose. so, a nice looking wet weather period headed our way. here we are friday. tomorrow is umbrella day. drive safe. afternoon commute will be wet north of san francisco but i think it'll be glazed in the roadways elsewhere. these days saturday is the wet day. good day to stay home if you can. sunday there you go. more showers and a little bit of monomorning for the commute. just where we need. exactly what we need right at
