. complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is the 10:00 news on ktvu channel 2. >> some much-needed rain is making a return to the bay area bush it's not anywhere the amount that we need and the storm is not sticking around for long good evening, i'm ken wayne. >> hello everyone i'm heather holmes. we're on stormwatch tonight as rainy weather returns to barack. want to give you a live look at our stormtracker radar and some green in the bay area, but again this system is going to be moving out soon. >> windshield wipers were hard at work in marin county. tonight's scattered showers

were largely confined to the north bay and other parts the bay area may get wet later on tonight. >> we have team camera with ktvu's john sasaki. we begin with our meteorologist mark tamayo. >> most of the bay area pick up no more than a few sprinkles excepts pars of the north bay, picking up clouds and light to moderate cells out there. as you can see some of the neighborhoods up towards bodega bay, windsor and sebastopol. we're talking about amounts over an inch or several inches, but not the case today. just a fraction of that. on live stormtracker 2, that is coming up for you right now, you can see the coverage out. there the one change is developing is this southern portion of the system beginning to approach areas south of the golden gate bridge. you can see the greens and possibly some more heavier showerses approaching the coast. closer inspection towards pillar point around half moon bay, highway 1, this will be

woman is hospitalized after police say she was shot in the back. it happened around 6:00 in oakland near the emeryville border around 57th and lowell streets. initial reports indicate that the woman may have been shot by a boyfriend or ex-boyfriend. police say that the gunman remains on the loose. officer have not been available to offer any description of that shooter. muni stations in downtown san francisco have re-opened after a deadly accident. the san francisco fire department says a 45-year-old man fell from the platform at the powell street station and was struck by a train and killed at about 4:40 this afternoon. downtown stations were closed for nearly four hours during the investigation. the victim has not been identified the muni says it has conflicting reports from witnesses about whether the man jumped or was trying to get a dropped backpack. that train operator suffered minor injuries. authorities are identified a motorcyclist killed hel falling from a freeway on-ramp

in san francisco today, 42-year-old joshua epple was getting ready to enter the road when for some reason he was thrown from his bike. he plunged 30' from the on-ramp to a parking lot below. ploy say it's not clear if speed or alcohol ways factor. happening now a live look at san francisco's union square. you can see little raindrops on the camera lens out there. but for the most part all of the people are gone it's hard to believe that two hours ago it was filled with thousands of people, all of them watching the chinese new year parade. the clean-up just wrapped up in san francisco after tonight's parade. this is the largest such parade outside of china and draws hundreds of thousands of people along the route through downtown and chinatown. ktvu's debora villalon joins us live with the highlights from the big parade. >> reporter: hi ken, people born in the year of the horse are said to be

very animated, and energetic. and that perhaps describes the parade itself. the finale worth the two-hour wait. the golden dragon, 200' long, carried by 100 martial artists, built in china and designed to amaze as it always does. but with more than 100 parade entries, there is something for everyone in an event that dates back to the gold-rush era. >> there is a horse, a lot of potential. >> the mayor says that there is simply nothing like this anywhere. >> it's literally every language and every race and people come from far away places to enjoy this. >> reporter: fans come again and again for their favorites. >> the marching bands, the high school marching bands. >> reporter: what did you like? >> the schools. >> reporter: it's just amazing.

particularly difficult flu season. back in january she was admitted to the hospital in roseville her husband and children said she never considered getting a flu shot before this. >> the kids got it. it old people got it, but not healthy people, who you know, it wasn't -- we weren't at- risk. i didn't think my parents were at-risk or i was or my sister. >> bunning's family has become advocates for flu vaccinations and encouraging everyone to get a potentially life-saving shot. more details now, state health officials announced yesterday that 41 new flu- related deaths have been confirmed in california during the past week. in all that makes 243 flu- related deaths this season more than double the 106 deaths during the entire flu season last year and another 41 deaths are still being investigated. here in the bay area we have counted 43 flu-related deaths so far. that includes one new death in san mateo county confirmed just this week.

santa clara county has the most deaths of the bay area counties with 14. an overnight winter storm is pounding the eastern seaboard tonight. massachusetts is expected to get the worst of it with up to 15" of snow. the governor there says cape cod and other parts the coastline will experience hurricane-force winds. >> under these conditions , it really isn't possible for us to keep the roads clear and safe given the rate ofsnowfall. >> it's crazy. airports back east are still trying to recover from a week of bad weather. today a reported 800 flights were canceled, but it was much worse thursday when more than 6,000 flights were called off. tonight sfo officials say flights are running on time with no weather delays from east coast, but you can anticipate problems tomorrow especially for flights out of boston and new york. as always you are told to check with your airline before heading out to the airport.

. an uptick in mail theft in marin county is raising fears about identity theft and mail fraud. it's a trend that has been reported by communities all over the bay area. >> but as ktvu's patti lee tells us mill valley residents are tackling that problem by going shopping. >> reporter: expecting a new credit card? annie goldman found her mail half-open, including her w it 2. >> it because perforated so somebody could have looked inside and seen any social security number. >> reporter: the visa, nowhere to be found. >> they said they sent it weeks ago and i never got it and at that point i thought i should file a fraud alert. >> she is one of dozens of mail theft victim, but the sheriff's department says unlike home burglaries mail theft is not a crime of opportunity and only way to protect yourself is with a

100 kennedy lane in healdsburg. officials say the suspect was struggling with police officerses when his gun went off. no officers were injured in the confrontation. all four have been played placed on administrative leave while the accident is being investigated. we have new information on a gruesome discovery in mendicino county. appears a man found to be mauled by dogs was already dead when when that attack happened. the victim was found in the town of calpella, north of ukiah yesterday morning. a deputy shot and killed one of the dogs when it charged him. another dog, a pit bull ran off. the victim has not yet been identify. people living in california illegally could soon be allowed to buy health insurance through state if a newly introduced bill is signed into law. under the affordable care act, only u.s. citizens can buy policies through health exchanges, such as covered california. the new bill introduced by

state senate ricardo lara of los angeles county calls the exchange that would cater to undocumented immigrants. that exchange would be paid for with state money. president obama today called on congress to finish passing a bill that would raise the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour. >> it would lift millions of americans out of poverty, and help millions more work their way out of poverty. without requiring a single day in new taxes or spending. it will give more businesses more customers with more money to spend, and that means growing the economy for everyone. >> this week the president signed an executive order raising the minimum wage for federal contractors. california's minimum wage is set to rise to $10 an hour in 2016. >> those who work for a living must be able to live off their work. >> an in effort to get the city of oakland to increase its minimum wage to the highest in the bay area, church groups, students and labor leaders all rallied today.

in a case compared to the trayvon martin trial a florida jury failed to reach a verdict on the most serious count of first-degree murder. michael dunn was convicted of four counts including attempted second-degree murder for shooting into an suv filled with teenagers after he asked them to turn down their music. 17 -year-old jordan davis was killed. his mother praised the verdicts, but says she is not satisfied. >> we're so grateful for the truth. we're so grateful that the

jurors were able to understand the commonsense of it all. and we will continue to stand and we will continue to await for justice for jordan. >> the state attorney announced she intends to reprosecutor dunn on first- degree murder charge that could bring dunn a live sint with today's convictions he faces up to 60 years in prison. people in south carolina will still talking about a rare 4.1 earthquake. quake hit after 10:20 last night. about serv miles from the town ofennialfield new york of augusta, georgia. quake was felt as far away as 10 miles away. the u.s. geological survey says it was a large quake for the area. state averages only 15-20 quakes a year compared to thousands here in california. >> i thought a meteor or an airplane had flown in and crashed right here. you know, i was scared.

>> people said the quake shook items off tables and shelves, but there are no reports of major damage. openly gay tennis professional billie jean king is to be at the closing ceremonies at sochi olympics. the tenace great was chosen as a member of president obama's official delegation. caitlin cahow two time olympic medalist and also openly gay is another member of delegation. king she is concerned about the treatment of the lgbt community in russia. figure skater polina edmunds has finally arrived in sochay for the games and tweeted this photo heading to europe. since then the 15-year-old has been training in germany and austria. the sophomore from san josi's archbishop mitty high school sat her first olympics. she will compete in the lady's figure skating starting wednesday.

a south carolina woman says she is livid after she was picked and jailed overnight, accused of failing to return a movie that she rented back in 2005 from a now closed video store. 27-year-old michelle finley was picked up by police on an arrest warrant according to the warrant finley received several letters to return the movies and finley called the whole thing ridiculous. she is out on bail and says she intends on fighting all the charge. a great valentine's day surprise for an 8-year-old boy and all made possible thanks in part to the magic of television and to the people at one television station in san diego. >> hi, i am sean green. >> that is sean green, who will one day take my place, reading from a fake news script as he sat in the anchor chair at kgtv and sean's mom is currently stationed in afghanistan. sean thought he was there to get a firsthand look at news put on everyday and turns out

central valley, secretaryst state john kerry toured a manufacturing plant in beijing. the u.s. and china pledged to work together to limit greenhouse gas emissions. >> in order to meet the global and the economic challenge of climate change, undeniably, all of us are going to have to do more. >> central valley farmers are grappling with the worst drought in decades. during his visit yesterday, president obama pledged $183 million in drought relief fun and says he will ask congress for a billion dollars to address climate change. nearly 20 car windows smashed along san francisco's golden gate park and now police have planning to step up patrols. those vehicles were all parked on fulton between 17th and 25th avenues. kutv's christien kafton talked to police about their advice to avoid becoming a victim. >> reporter: this week neighbors woke up to

pile after pile of broken glass on fulton smith. ryan swindsen says they struck nearly 20 cars and his was one of them. >> i walked out in the morning and i kind of new something happened and i went over and sure enough, my window was broken into. everything was pulled out of my glove compart thement. >> reporter: swindsen says his car has been targeted before and estimates he is out between $2,000 and $3,000 between stolen items and repeated window repairs. he suspects that the thieves live in golden gate park and wants the police to clear out of the park. >> reporter: san francisco police say they are stepping up patrols in the area around the park. >> well, we have officers that are obviously aware of it and they are looking for suspicious behavior related to auto burglaries. and we're doing everything that we can do to address the problem.

police officers say thieves are often looking for small, valuable item like phones, music players and gps units and say to clear valuables out of your car anytime you get out. >> another ops may be leaving the glove compartment box open and in view, so possibly if someone is looking to break in to look into the glove box they can say it's empty. >> reporter: police say often times cases like this are the work of one or two burglaries. in san francisco, christien kafton, ktvu . >> an long time east firefighter struggled to hold back his tears of gratitude as dozens came out to support him as he faced the toughest fight of his life. >> firefighter rich voisey was comforted by his son and daughter at a fundraiser to help pay for his cancer treatment. the 53-year-old was recently diagnosed with stage iii brain cancer.

voisey was been with the fire department for three decades. the station was closed due to budget cuts, but voisey worked tirelessly to have it re- opened. >> my dad, anyone who knows him he is most generous loving guy that would give to anyone and it was so nice to see how many people who know what kind of person he is and want to do the same for him. >> in all today's fundraiser raised $25,000. voisey's family says they learned just yesterday that the city accepted his workers' comp claim and that means threhave additional financial help to pay for specialized treatment. standing in line all for one single slot machine. why special will pem will wait for hours to play for a chance at this particular one-armed bandit. >> scattered

. we have been tracking quite a few clouds owe there, really waiting for the rainfall. it's taking its time, but an increase in the radar loop over the past two hours in santa rosa, reporting light rain. basically for the southern half of the bay area, this moisture is moving into the south and west. so with that, the rain showers, the coverage has been increasing. here is a oasis closer inspection of the radar, closer to south san francisco, san mateo, extending across the bay, towards mountain view and sunnyvale. to increase the shower active, mostly light, but a few moderate cells

out there as well. this will be the trend, the theme in the short-term, basically over the next two to three hours with the rain showers increasing in coverage. it is just a short-term deal because tomorrow most of your sunday in fact, will be dry. for tonight, mostly cloudy skies, some scattered showers as we already showed you out here. our live camera looking out towards the bay bridge in san francisco across the bay. tor tomorrow, wind speeds do pick up, we think around 10-20 miles per hour and the extended, sun-cloud mix with a few extra clouds by late tuesday into wednesday morning. overnight lows first thing tomorrow morning for your sunday it will be cooler than this morning. cooler air behind the system. so we're thinking lower 40s, napa, san francisco 50 degrees and san josi in the upper 40s at 49. so here is the weather system moving into northern and central california right now. this will be the source -- this as been the source of all the cloud cover for today and

overnight the shower activity will gradually spread to the south. we scaled back on the forecast accumulations and this system is just basically falling apart over north california, but strong enough to generate the scattered showers. so we're thinking about .05"" and verified in the north bay to over .25" in the north bay coastal hills. the timing basically happening right no into early sunday morning. as far as our forecast model showing you that tomorrow morning -- this is early tomorrow morning, 3:00. still showing you showers out there. into tomorrow at 7:00, in the morning, just partly cloudy skies. you can see what happens. into the afternoon hours we clear things out with past partly to mostly cloudy skies. this will be a snow producer in th sierras. right now blue canyon reporting heavy rainfall, and snow levels will be coming down early sunday morning, around 5500' and potentially taking about 3- 6". forecast highs for tomorrow, for your sunday, with clearing skies the readings back up into
