near interstate 280 and clarinda avenue where thoughts say they found the vehicle used in that shooting. more on the search and the injures officer, patti. >> reporter: with the suspect so quick to open fire on an officer, now on the run, police evacuated these apartments and shut down these streets for hours. they re-opened them only in the past 45 minutes after they were certain the suspect wasn't here. s.w.a.t. teams moved into the neighborhood just before 8:00 tonight, part of a multiagency manhunt that shut down several blocks in daly city with a man abandoned his car after shooting a san francisco police officer. >> it's very scary, very, very scary. >> they don't know where he is at. he might be inside the apartment. >> reporter: the officer was shot miles away in the mission district around 3:00 this afternoon. >> on the stairs here, i heard four, five shots, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. >> are the witnesses race over

toward see one officer trying to staunch the blood of his fellow officer. >> i saw blood on the squad car and the policeman down right by his rear driver's side tire holding on and there was blood on the sidewalk. it was a bad sight. >> reporter: police chief greg suhr says the officer was shot as he walked to the car and the other officer shot back. >> the passenger officer fired upon the suspect vehicle in defense of his partner. >> reporter: police tell us that they know who they are looking for. >> there is a vehicle involved and we know who the register owner of the vehicle is. >> reporter: he they just haven't caught him at. at 9:00 street closures were lifted and people allowed to return to their homes, but the search for the shooter is still on. the injured officer is 28 years old and he a 6-year veteran of the san francisco police

this it 38-year-old felicha ward, whose friends and family gathered in the west oakland neighborhood where they grew up, as soon as they heard she was gone. >> i saw her dele days ago and just did her hair a week and a half ago. >> ward was the passenger when it collided in the intersection of plymouth and 98th avenue. she died on impact and witnesses say the other driver ran way and a third car involved also drove away. >> she whereas my best friend, my everything. we went through it all. whoever did it just turn yourself in, because that is the saddest tragedy we have ever. just leaving the scene, that is not right. >> she was a good person. everybody loved her. >> reporter: felicha had five children.

in the 200 block of santa clara avenue. fire officials tell us that the fire was accidental, caused by cooking. the victim was a 32-year-old man who may have fallen asleep without realizing the kitchen was on fire . new developments as the search continues into the baffling disappearance of a malaysian airline flight over the gulf of thailand. tonight the search for the plan haze widen as members of the u.s. national transportation safety board are heading overseas to help try to determine the fate of that boeing triple-7 and the 239 people on board. within the last hour malaysian authorities say they are looking at the possibility that flight the could have turned back, expanding the search area. while the mystery of what happened remains tonightses we are getting a clearer picture. the flight manifest shows three americans, a 51 -year-old ibm

. a freak accident near tampa, florida hurt two people when a small plane collided with a skydiver. a witness captured the accident on-camera. you can see in the pictures somehow the plane's wing was tackled with the jumper's parachute 75' in the air. the skydiver was thrown to the ground and the plane went into a nose-dive before crashing. both the pilot and jumper survived with minor injuries, the 87-year-old pilot remains hospitalized for once. tonight on last night of the c pba pac newt gingrich warned his party against rallying too hard against president obama and hillary rodham clinton. >> if our movement is primarily anti-obama, we will in fact, reduce the number of victories this fall.

. continuing coverage on a major project happening deep below san francisco's streets. today we got an up close work on the central subway system. massive digging began last spring and as ktvu's john sasaki shows us that the turns are more than halfway done. we rode the amusement -style transport 100' below the city's streets. >> there is about 40-50' of water pressure above us. so we're literally constructing a tunnel underwater. >> reporter: the central subway tums have

the toyota driver were all hoppized torres was arrested on suspicion of felony dui. a trial has been ordered for a man who allegedly killed a nursing student. 21-year-old kristina chesterman of livermore was struck while riding her bicycle near the campus of chico state university. the contra costa times reporting that 20 -year-old riley dean of ohio was ordered to stand trial in her death. fibers were identified from the hood of his suh that experts say matched chesterman's clothing. the man who inspired the three strikes law is chasing a third strike himself. he faces a life sentence if convicted. walker was involved in the 1992 murder of a fresno teenager, but got a plea deal. the victim's father pushed for
