san francisco. it all started when police said they were looking for a car. that suspect was arrested yesterday. for the latest on the case we turn to debora villalon. she joins us where officer shaw is recovering tonight. >> reporter: officer shaw on the force six years is said to be recovering well. seeing visitor, his family and after the chase. the white mercedes benz pulled

into the station and officers pulled ruano on to the ground. >> i've been hit. >> reporter: police say ruano was behind the wheel of a different car a mustang saturday afternoon when he tried to back away from officer adam shaw trying to question him about vandalism. shaw's partner fired his weapon in defense and witnesses seemed to suggest ruano had a gun too. >> suspect blue mustang. >> reporter: ruano's car its back window shattered triggered a chase for him that stretched past 9:00 last night. two hours later the sighting miles away and the freeway chase leading to a charge against ruano driving at over 101 miles per hour. also assault with a deadly weapon, his vehicle. being a felon in possession of ammunition and evading police. >> any time an officer is shot,

we always fear the worse. >> reporter: the police chief has expressed relief that his wounded officer will recover. and acknowledged the circumstances of the shooting are unclear. >> we won't know exactly what happened. we won't know until we find the suspect or speak to the victim officer. >> reporter: it's important to note there are no weapons charges or assault on a police officer charges against jeffrey ruano at this time. reporting live in san francisco debora villalon ktvu channel 2 news. now to a freak accident along a busy area highway. a large tree suddenly fell on to a car. killing the driver. that tree came crashing down on westbound interstate 80 near cherry glen road in vacaville. patti lee live now near that accident scene after asking investigators if this was preventable. >> reporter: that's what they're looking at now. the chp's lead investigator says the driver is blameless

and the focus is now on tree and finding out who owns it. at 1:45 this afternoon tragedy struck when this old eucalyptus tree snapped and landed on a passing car. >> i have never personally seen this happen before. >> reporter: the driver a 22- year-old woman from oakland was killed instantly. but chp investigators say her car still swerved across four lanes, hit the median before crossing back. >> there were people outside the car. there was a paramedic that had stopped to try to help her. >> reporter: invest bay -- invest investigators are still trying to figure out who this tree belongs to. >> we believe it did not belong to the state because of the fence line. but we are still investigating that. >> reporter: land records now need to be accessed and that takes time. it will take a few days to determine who is responsible for this tree. the county has definitively been ruled out so now it's

between the state and two private landowners. regular commuters who drive interstate 80 every day were horrified to hear the details of the accident. >> every day pretty much when i drive i fear things could happen. >> reporter: lying debris and other drivers are their main concerns on the road not the trees along the side. >> if it happens it happened. if you knew it was your time then you would avoid a situation like that. but you don't know. >> reporter: the last time anything like this took place was in 2005 when a pine tree fell on to the california highway hitting a car and killing one passenger. patti lee. investigators tonight are looking for the driver who ran from a scene of a deadly crash at the oakland coliseum. it was around 3:00 this afternoon when a black sedan and mini van crashed.

the effect of the boing 777 disappearance is being felt around the world. in australia, weeks is wondering about her husband. >> i have a 3-year-old asking for his father. will daddy be there, when will he be back. in china distressed family still can't believe there's still so little news about what happened to the flight. you wouldn't do this if you had family on board says this relative. and there's growing concern about the identities of some of those on the plane. the passenger list for the flight itself has two anomalies, an austrian called christian nodle and codle. neither men were on the plane.

highway around 10:30 this morning when he was hit by a toyota suv. a plan is dead after he was h it. we have more on what witnesses say they saw him doing right after the crash. >> reporter: cell phone video and photos attained by ktvu shows rescue workers on scene of a crash. two cars collided and ended up on a sidewalk at the intersection of walker and castro. the aftermath is still visible on the street. >> we heard like a big sound like boom, boom. i didn't know exactly what had happened. >> reporter: police are trying to figure out how an acura and chevy camaro slammed into each other leaving a ripple of damage. >> the pole was right on the back of the car. >> reporter: deroshi was surprised the driver of the camaro ended up alive.

>> it was totaled. the rear end was on that tree. and the passenger's side was dented in and the jaws of life were brought out to get the car pried open. >> reporter: a man gnome by the name of esgar ran to help. >> i could hear them breathing heavily. i thought they were fine. >> reporter: but the passenger died at the hospital. police believe the driver was drunk and arrested him before he could leave. >> i heard that he got out of the car and he was pretending to be on a cell phone like part of the people. watching and then he started to run when he saw the cops. i heard the police officer say he's running. he's getting away and they got him. >> reporter: neighbors wished people wouldn't risk their lives. >> it's horrific that people still drink and drive like this. during this day and age when there's so much prevention when you can stop doing that. >> reporter: police have not released the identities of the victim or the alleged drunk driver. he remains in the hospital facing gross vehicle

a clash symbolizing the split that is happening across the country of ukraine one week from today. crimeans are set to vote on a referendum to leave ukraine and join russia. russian president putin spoke with his british and german counter parts and reportedly agreed to support diplomacy. the president called on world leaders to pressure russia and support ukraine. mr.obama will meet with ukraine's interim prime minister on wednesday to discuss the crisis there. iraqi investigators looking into a deadly bombing say a policeman suspected that something wasn't right when that mini bus approached. but when the officer asked the driver to pull over, they say that's when he detonated his explosives killing at least 45 people. that bombing took place in the

a big birthday celebration for a living part of the bay area's aviation history. james ricklep was honored. there's a saying that pilots like to share, there are bold pilots and there are old pilots but there are no bold old pilots. but today we may have found an

exception. john ricklets not only witnessed aviation history but he lived it. today people gathered to celebrate his 100th birthday and the life of a fighter pilot. >> if i would have known i was going to live this long i would have taken better care of myself. >> reporter: he was born just 11 years after the wright brother's historic flight. and he started his own history. in a plane without a break. >> i made my first airplane solo. at an airport that south of the stadium. and right on el camino. >> with an aeronautical debris he moved to helicopters. and eventually started rick helicopters which was once the largest helicopter company in the world. those aircrafts too have changed. >> they got more complicated. and i don't know that i can fly

a modern helicopter. >> reporter: but perhaps his greatest aviation love is this fair child 24 the pegasus. it was given to him as a wedding gift by his father-in- law. he says that each plane has a story and this plane is known as the honey moon plane. it cost $7,800 in its time. today's pilots are sometimes seen as button pushers in the cockpit. not the stick and rutter wizards who thrilled sky gazing crowds. people today he says don't appreciate aviators as much now. >> not like they did back then. when you, when you landed on dirt and, the airplane didn't

even have a tail wheel. it had tail skid. >> reporter: joins gym were two bay area flying legends. jerry mcman and tillson was the first woman to fly a helicopter. you may be surprised at how much history there is here in the bay area. you can stop by the aircraft museum to learn more. and we have breaking news. it involves an earthquake. it was a 6.9 quake. about 48 miles near ferndale. we're getting calls from a lot of people that say that they felt the jolt again. this was a pretty substantial earthquake at larger than 6.1. we're getting lots of people from people who felt it. we will have much more on this including any reports of any

damage coming up a little bit later on this newscast. now on to other news. one person was kill and three others injured in a shooting in richmond. the four were shot in front of a house on the 1600 block of first street in north richmond around 10:00 last night. a 23-year-old man was killed. friends paid tribute to him by painting his nickname on the sidewalk near the scene of that shooting. >> it's an unfortunate incident but you know they do happen. >> reporter: neighbors say they were too scared to talk to us on camera but they told us the victim grew up in that area and was visiting friends last night when he was shot. it was a tricky rescue operation in marin county for a surfer caught against the rocks by a pounding surf. park rangers say rescue swimmers and a u.s. coast guard boat were sent but they could not reach the victim.

a chp aircraft was able to lift the surfer off the rocks by boat. he was identified as a bay area resident. with a prick of a finger and a simple blood test. researchers say they can predict who will get alzheimer's disease. the test looks at the levels of 10 fats in the blood. researchers say their initial trials were able to predict with 90% accuracy the risk of a person developing the disease within three years. doctors say current drugs may be failing to help those afflicted with alzheimer's because patients are treated so late in the illness. an estimated 44 million people worldwide suffer from alzheimer's. that number is expected to triple by 2050. a mother near sa -- sacramento ended up giving birth in a car as it sped down the highway. she and her husband jeremy jumped on the car and went down interstate 80. without much warning, the baby

started to arrive. briana said she knew the baby was not going to wait until she got to the hospital. >> i can't stop it. i grabbed one more contraction and his shoulders came out. i picked him up and layed him on my belly. >> reporter: by the time jeremy took an exit. briana has already detangled the baby from it takes two to make a thing go right ♪

back now to that breaking news and that earthquake that hit near fern dale. we spoke to the fern dale fire department and they told us that despite this being really strong they said so far they have not received any word of any injuries or damage there. >> yeah and i actually saw a tweet from the local meteorologist up in the eureka area and the one comment about this quake it was very long. didn't get a duration in second but it was long. the latest update went from a 6.1 to 6.9. the epicenter just outside of ferndale dale which is 10 miles to the south of eureka. we will give you a better idea where this was. this happened at 10:18. historically you have a great place here and there have been several strong quakes in this area over the course of time where they pass add few decades. but tonight a magnitude 6.9.

looking at a last indication of the tsunami center. right now no tsunami threat. 50-miles to the west of eureka. this magnitude might be changing. i've seen a few estimates at 7.0. so we will get a better idea in the next few hours. as far as our local weather for today, lots of clouds. san francisco 69 at fremont, 73 degrees. on the satellite and the radar coming up for you. we just reported that quake up in the eureka area. they're picking up rainfall up toward the north coast. especially north of mendecino county. all this rain to the north will gradually spread to the south. a lot of this activity will be seen around the bay. could have a few sprinkles, a few light showers but the

intensity will be increasing in cover. here's the latest look at the satellite and radar. the moisture stream which has been focused out to the north out toward northern california, we're just talking about one rain cloud that's for tonight and into early tomorrow morning. we're expecting this. mostly cloudy skies. north bay showers developing overnight. tomorrow scattered morning showers. a dry weather pattern as well. we will be warming back up. we're talking about 70s. even some lower 80s coming up in the long range weather map. you will see that coming up in just a little bit. rain line which has been focused to the north will gradually be on the move. we are expecting scattered showers tomorrow morning with clearing sky. rainfall totals will be on the -- north bay hills we could have amounting .75 of an inch.

we will be locking this weather pattern. look what happens by the weekend. we're approaching the upper 70s to the lower 80s. looks like sunday will be sunday a week from now will be the warmest day of the week. here's our forecast model showing us the clouds. and still scattered rain showers. this is 7:00 for the morning commute favoring the east bay and south bay. but that will be a quick mover tomorrow afternoon will be completely dry. with increasing sunshine. forecast highs for tomorrow will be in the 60s. warmest locations a little over 70s. tomorrow will be cooler than today in the order of four to 8 degrees out there. san jose 72 degrees. so four to 8 degrees of cooling for tomorrow. look ahead that one rain cloud for tomorrow. temperatures rebounding for your tuesday. we're talking about lower 80s by saturday and sunday. a big change. but remember the commutes for tomorrow morning will be darker than usual. that sunrises at 7:30 and also wet roadways as well.
