a massive fire engulfs an apartment building under construction. tonight firefighters have turned the corner but they're still putting out hot spots. good evening i'm gasia mikaelian. >> i'm frank somerville. that fire burned for hours and was a test of will for firefighters. the flames engulfed an apartment complex under construction. the fire started just before 5:00 this evening and the flames just took off from

there. here's where that building is located just south of at&t park between channel and channel basin's street on fourth. right now this is the view from news chapper two over that sight. you can see it is still a very active scene. there are also still flames burning and firefighters as you can see here are pouring waters on what's left of the building. we have coverage beginning with ken pritchett. ken you just learned a firefighter was injured tonight. >> reporter: i talked to a fire department spokesperson. and he said that engine was on the last ladder truck to arrive. the fire was too hot. the flames too intense they had to retreat. they had to leave their truck behind for fear that the building would collapse down on the truck's location. that injured firefighter continued to fight this fire for hours. only later to report that he

had minor to moderate burns to his face. as you can see, they are still pouring water on this building. at this point there are still hot spots. before this fire in mission bay was an inferno, a 911 call came in at 5:01. this picture taken by julia young three hours earlier. >> i saw the smoke come ing from the corner and suddenly flames engulfed the whole corner. >> reporter: young called her the fiance and then flames were everywhere. the fire trucks blasted water

in the collapsing building. the concern is that the fire would spread. >> the radiant heat was threatening the buildings literally across the street. >> reporter: in the building we saw firefighters lugging gear up six stories of stairs. no firefighters went inside. firefighters had to keep their distance. an apartment building under construction full of lumber and other building material. no fire alarm or sprinkler yet installed. all allowed the fire to build and spread. >> we're told that the workers got off around 3:30. so whatever was burning at about an hour a half and smoldering had to get going. >> reporter: the danger to those buildings has largely passed. those residents can't go home yet. >> we just kind of got wind that we're not going to be able to go back home. at this point we're going to try to find a hotel and make

the best of it. >> reporter: you're looking now live from news chopper 2. we're told there are still hot spots in that building. and firefighters expect to be here all night. now chief white there were investigators on scene. they will be back here tomorrow. most of their investigation will be conducted through interviews such as workers that were on the scene today. because the fire that was caused in the upper floors is no longer there. ken pritchett, ktvu news. now we go to anne rubin. she's been looking at the apartment that was being build on that site. a spectacle as it went up in flames. >> reporter: for neighbors it was especially terrifying that fire shot out their windows.

it left them worried about their pets. >> it was like fourth of july in the middle of nowhere. it was a large explosion. we had to run down the apartments to get out. >> reporter: the new apartment building they had been watching slowly go up was now going up in flames. this is one cell phone video one neighbor shot from their window. >> just watching it progress. and not seeing it come under control. it was very scary. >> reporter: and these are mega lots. the project had been two weeks ahead of schedule set to open in late may or early june. >> it was really big. it's definitely one of those things that it's great for the city but hard for us who have been here for a while. >> reporter: it was one of several new apartments in the

neighborhood. >> all of a sudden this one went up and we were like there goes our view. >> reporter: and the fire gutted the whole place. >> you could literally see right through it. >> reporter: because the sprinkler systems are now off those builds are not habitable at this time. the red cross is helping people make some arrangements. ann rubin. >> reporter: it seemed an ember from that fire spark another fire one block away. that fire broke out on a terrace rooftop on ucsf. the fire and smoke could be seen for miles. we received pictures from viewers. this is what the fire looked out from the bay bridge heading into san francisco.

you can see the smoke there pouring into the sky. and here's another picture. this was taken from a boat on the bay. and look at this. from this perspective, it looks like a large chunk of the city is on fire. and finally we have another picture that shows what drivers saw from a near by freeway you can see here just how intense the smoke was. the thick black smoke pouring out of that building at the height of the fire. another viewer jake durhan sent us a time lapse picture of the fire as he watched it from his work. it started out with smoke and flames and then you can see how the smoke starts changing color. the video was taken from high up so you can get a good perspective of exactly what it looked like. on ktvu.com you can see those pictures of the fire. and you can see the effect it's having on the flag there

at jack london square. our chief meteorologist bill martin has been watching the winds develop tonight and tell us what you're seeing right now. >> that wind advisory has been in effect for a couple of hours. the winds are really just starting to peak. these are some of the wind gusts from today. see the oakland hills, the wind are really funneling through there. we've had wind gusts at 60 miles per hour. everyone else is windy but not like in the oakland hills. let's take a look at the extend of the advisory. it covers most of the bay area. in the hills and at the low levels as well. the winds strongest as i mentioned in the east bay hills. i'll come in closer and show you what's happening. the winds coming out of the north-northeast. it gets funneled. you see where the caldecut tunnel is. this is a low lying gust here. the strongest winds in that

area right now but a wind advisory for basically the entire bay area for strong winds in the forecast overnight into tomorrow morning. when i come back i'll show you the areas that we're going to see the strongest wind, we're going to continue to see the strongest winds and the warm up that's in store. in san francisco earlier today, wind blew sand over the highway. prompting caltrans to close a stretch in the southbound direction. crews are able to clean up the sand and the roads reopened before 3:00 this afternoon. a search for a man who sexually assaulted a girl in an elementary school in oakland. turns out this same man could be connected to another attack at a different school. ktvu's jana katsuyama has been talking to investigators about the possible link, jana. >> reporter: i've been on this since friday and today i learned from police that they believe there might be this connection. that the attack and the description of the attacker are almost identical to this incident involving a 6-year-old girl that happened just a few

months ago. today parents picking up their children at the world academy on 20th avenue say the school is taking more precautions after last week's reported attack. >> make sure you're on the list so you're not able to go in if your name is on the list. >> reporter: parents in the afternoon school program were given a letter announcing a meeting that will take place tomorrow night. >> reporter: two girls say they have encountered a man and a 7- year-old reported that he inappropriately touched her. as police searched for the attacker officers also went to st. college now elementary school just blocks away on international boulevard. that's where a man of similar description reportedly assaulted a 6-year-old in january when she opened a gym bathroom with a friend. >> he identified himself as someone that tutored.

he asked one of the girls to sit on his lap. she did. >> reporter: some parents and students say they are concerned there isn't more security. >> i still have been leaving my the doors open like this one. it's been, letting people come in and not even people from our school. >> reporter: the attacker in both of these cases is described as being a white man about 6'tall 180 to 200 pounds with black hair and a mustache. oakland police tell us they're coming up with as much information to come out with a sketch of this attacker and release it in the next couple of days. jana katsuyama, ktvu news. ktvu news has confirmed that the 49ers traded for lineman jonathan martin. he's a controversial player from the miami dolphins who accused his teammate of bullying hill.

does this surprise you that the niners traded for martin. >> no the 49ers have been a no bully zone for a long long time. no surprise for a long reason. harbaugh recruited martin when he was at stanford. coached him for several seasons. he is not only familiar with martin as a player but what kind of man he is. one of the most progressive organizations dating back to the 70s when walsh instituted a no hazing policy. harbaugh has continued that legacy and will not put up with any shananagans at all. as the relationship that will work for the team and clearly martin feels the same way too as he tweeted out this evening, opportunities are few in the nfl. can't wait to get to work. niners empire. of course we can talk all we want but it comes down to one thing. and jonathan martin can play

a san jose police officer who was called to protect a woman is now accused of raping her instead. ktvu has been going through the documents and our paul chambers is now at police headquarters. and that police officer turned himself in yesterday. >> reporter: that's right and he's already out on bail and on paid administrative leave from the department. >> he was on duty. he was in a marked patrol car and in uniform. it was your standard basic call

at 2:00 in the morning. involving some kind of family disturbance. >> reporter: september 22nd of last year, graves as well as two other officers responded to a call where the victim and husband were drinking and arguing. graves drove the victim to a hotel room where she could sleep. after she was asleep, she was raped. >> it was officer graves that knocked at the door and forced himself on the victim in this case. >> reporter: san jose learned of the crime, two days later, graves was put on paid administrative leave. >> if these allegations are proven to be true, the officer

will face charges. we went to a neighborhood in gilroy where graves used to live. >> reporter: people there said they were shocked and surprised to hear the news. graves will be back in court on july 4th. in san francisco police say their investigation into a shooting that wounded an officer last weekend is now leaning toward the possibility that he was hit by friendly fire. officer adam shaw is recovering at the hospital. investigators have interviewed officer shaw and his partner. the partner fired a shot after the officer stopped a car on saturday in the mission district. and they say the driver started backing up toward them. the bullet has not started and may with the one that hit officer shaw. >> we don't have a gun recovered. another gun recovered at this

point. we also don't have the bullet that struck officer shaw recovered at this point. so based on that circumsubstantially that he may have been hit by friendly fire. >> reporter: both officers say they did not see a gun. the suspect 50-year-old jeffrey ruano took off before he was later arrested in san jose. he could appear in court as soon as tomorrow. continuing coverage now of the search for malasya airlines flight 270. as the mystery of what happened to the aircraft and 239 people on board takes another turn. contradictory statements from the malaysian military. currently the search for the missing boing 777 is focused in the straight of maraca. military forces say it was there that the plane showed up on radar about an hour after losing communication. however late tonight the air force commander distanced

himself from those remarks. today authorities released the names and photos of two passengers who loaded that jet with stolen passports. officials say the iranian men used their own documents to travel to malasya before switching to the italian and australian i.d.s. it's believed one of the passengers was attempting to seek asylum in germany. >> the more information we get the more we're leaning toward reporting that it was not a terrorist incident. dianne feinstein today accused the cia of spying on the senate intelligence committee and breaking the law in the proat the scene. the committee was investigating claims of waterboarding during the administration of george w. bush. reporter justin gray tells us why the charges are so unusual coming from senator feinstein.

>> reporter: for 40 minutes from the floor of the united states senate, california senator feinstein explained why and how she believes the cia searched her intelligence committee staff's computers and removed certain documents related to the committee's investigation into the cia's postcontroversial interrogation of suspected terrorists. >> i have grave concern that the cia's search may well have violated the separation of powers principal embodied in the united states constitution. >> reporter: the cia director brenham used strong language to deny feinstein's allegations. >> nothing could be further from the truth. we wouldn't do that. that's just beyond the scope of reason. >> reporter: feinstein the chairwoman of the senate intelligence committee usually a vocal supporter of intelligence gathering says she's referred this to the justice department for possible criminal investigation. >> i have asked for an apology

a b.a.r.t. spokesman says a man was found

on the tracks underneath the train shortly after 4:30. he was pronounced dead at the scene. trains did not stop at the balboa park station for nearly two hours following that incident. the circumstances surrounding the man's death are still being investigated. a state audit on the cosco busan accident says two issues still need to be addressed. in november 2007 the cosco busan crashed into a -- bar pilots don't have a state contract for medical exams. but the board of pilots commissioner says they do get regular exams. another issue that the board has failed to complete investigations within 90 days set by law. >> i don't think there's any any danger to the public in us not getting our reports out in 90 days. we want to get it right. >> the pilot board says it

now to the developing news on a fire fight going on now in san francisco. these are live pictures. ktvu's ken pritchett is on the ground there with an update, ken. >> reporter: gasia as we told you just before this broadcast we learned there was a firefighter injured on this fire. he was one of the first ones to respond up on a ladder very close to that fire. trying to knock it down as soon as the call came in. that firefighter suffered minor to moderate burns to his face but continued to fight this fire out here only reporting

his injuries hours later. here you see news chopper 2 above what is left of this apartment building. we are told that there are hot spots here and firefighters will be here all night. this fire burned very hot. it was an apartment building under construction with construction materials and no sprinkler or fire alarm yet in this building. there was a building just like it across the street and firefighters say it was chi to be able to stop this fire from going to a similar building just across the street which would be a senior center. it has the same kind of construction material and it could be dangerous to the firefighters. the firefighters are still working this fire and the building is earned by dr properties who put out a statement. saying that thankfully the project was safely evacuated and all the associates and contractors have been accounted for.

the company goes on to say that it is currently assessing the situation including the cause of the fire. that is something that the fire department will be looking into arson investigators are on scene. they will likely determine the cause of the fire through interviews. they will be talking to those workers who were here on the scene working on this project an hour and a half before this fire was reported. in san francisco, ken pritchett, ktvu channel 2 news. another fire in san francisco tonight ruined the homes of a newlywed couple and their honey moon plans. the fire broke out in their home. the couple living there had their bags packed and were ready to head out when their house caught fire. a whole new cause of recruits for the fire department. in this case there's an interesting twist. this is actually a citizen's

police academy that allows regular folks to be part of their police department in alameda. noelle walker has a look at what it takes to participate. >> reporter: they won't have badges or a promise of a job but they will be able to help the department save money. police departments don't usually have people lining up to get in. pu -- but tonight the mug shots are happy ones. >> you drive through the building and wonder what are they doing in there. >> reporter: it's the department's opportunity to pull back the curtain to show every day people what the police department is about. >> i want to get my feet wet and have an idea what i'm getting myself into for the future. >> i just thought it would be fun to go to the shooting range and see what i could do. >> reporter: the shooting range

new details tonight about the sexual abuse allegations facing richmond teacher 32-year- old ron guinto. authorities confirm three former students boys ages 11 and 12 told investigators that guinto showed them pornography and molested them during camping trips in 2012 and 2013.

guinto founded his own youth group camp epic in 2010 while working as a teacher's aid at making waves academy charting school in richmond. he was fired by his school in november but in january he was hired by mira vista elementary school. guinto was arrested last week and pled guilty. police are urging anyone else who thinks they were a victim to come forward. tonight the highway patrol is asking for witnesses who saw a roll over accident in san leandro this morning. the accident happened near the davis street exit around 11:20. the chp says the driver was trying to avoid a silver car that cut him off to try to avoid an suv that cut him off. the chp says the silver truck did not stop and is trying to find that driver. a string of crashes in san francisco have police calling on drivers to slow down and pedestrians and cyclists to

beware. in the last 24 hours three separate bicyclists have been hit. investigators say daylight saving time may be a contributing factor in these accidents. >> we're going to have more sunlight here in the evening hours. and so you know that could affect people depending on where the sun is at. where they're headed, if they're headed west the sun could be in their eyes. >> police say they often see distracted drivers, cyclists and pedestrians making their way through city streets. they say everyone needs to put down their electronics and pay attention to their surroundings. powerful prescription drugs are missing from cvs stores. they're missing from fairfield,

63 in hayward. 65 in oakland at this hour. it's pretty warm and that's because the air is sinking. we have the wind advisory out there. the wind advisory encompasses a lot of area where the strongest winds are gusting. i've had wind gusts through the gap. this is where the windiest conditions are. orinda, piedmont, in that area. wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour. even 55 miles per hour. that will continue strong wind throughout the night. that's going to be the windiest location. the reason for the wind is the high pressure building in. high pressure is also setting us up with the warmth. tomorrow warmer than today which will be warmer than the next day as we head into thursday and friday. this high pressure is the reason we're dry. it's the reason we're windy as well. low pressure gets close to it. the two try to balance each other out. the winds start going this way. normally the winds go this way. they're going this way now. gives you an offshore flow. because you're sinking and
