demolition, piece by piece. an apartment complex gutted last night is now a demolition site. good evenieveryone, i'm frank somerville. >> i'm julie haener. it was nearly 30 hours ago, that a massive fire tore through a six story apartment building under correction in san francisco's mission bay. now heavy equipment is pulling down the weak and twisted remains. ktvu's ken pritchett joins us

live, and tells us, firefighters are still finding hot spots tonight. >> reporter: you can see the bright lights brought out by firefighters as they continue their work here tonight. just 10 minuteses ago, firefighters were spraying water on that ladder truck. today was a day of demolition, as crews worked to make this site safer, and also give firefighters access to what hot spots remain. a tiny flame, through a somehow unbroken fourth floor windo was the only fire visible for much of the day. a caterpillar pushed and pulled down the upper floors of the gutted building. all at the direction of san francisco fire. >> the demolition has done a

great job of helping us, this afternoon and evening. >> reporter: the demolition crews also moved the pile of debris, exposing buried hot spots, which quickly flared up. >> which make it is easier for us. then we know exactly where it's smoulderring in the building. and we were able to knock it down. >> reporter: this is what the building looked like early this morning. >> it appears that the fire started above ground. they were doing some welding, we don't know what occurred there. >> reporter: arson investigators returned, and also questioned witnesses. beyond determining a cause, little remains but more demolition, and mopping up hot spots. >> there's no hazard to the public now. the fire is definitely contained. >> reporter: assistant chief frank lynn says that firefighters will be here overnight, keeping an eye on this structure, and also keeping an eye out for any

smoke. he says that it could be well into tomorrow before the last of the hot spots are taken care of. in san francisco, ken pritchett, ktvu, channel 2 news. the project of bre properties, i is also building this 245 unit complex on veterans boulevard in redwood city. they also have plans under construction in pleasanton and emeryville. the site was insured for fire damage. >> the fire that destroyed that complex in china basin did not spread to other buildings. for that, neighbors are extremely thankful. some residents were also told to leave their units, just to be safe. take a look at this video. it shows just how close the flames were. these pictures were taken from a cell phone in a unit right across the street from the fire. everyone was relieved that firefighters contained the

da we -- debris. new developments tonight. for the first time we're hearing from the mother of a young girl who says she was sexually assaulted at school in oakland. he is also accused of sexually assaulting another girl. jana katsuyama outside of police headquarters. >> reporter: this mother told me that her daughter broke into tears, telling police about the attack. she says she just wants this man caught. she doesn't want others to go through the fear that her daughter is feeling now. >> she doesn't want nobody to be near her. >> reporter: the woman told me it was her daughter who was the victim in friday's sexual assault. she says her daughter and a friend entered the bathroom at the academy, and soon after,

saw a man inside. the woman says the man pushed the girl through her clothes. before she screamed and ran. >> it changed her. she's not the same as she was before. she wants to stay in a corner. she doesn't want to eat. >> reporter: this afternoon, more than 100 parents and community members marched between the world academy and the elementary school. they also met with police and school officials and are demanding that the schools add security cameras and patrols. >> i think it's more important to see a little bit more like police, you know, around the areas because the park is here close. >> they would jump the fence, or they would come from the other side. >> the cameras have proven they can monitor the activity from

with black hair and mustache. he may have a birth mark, or a rash on the left side of his forehead. a bay area school district is warning about a dangerous new drug that apparently sent a student to the hospital. the little known psychedelic drug is called d.o.c. a report from mountain view on how that student is doing. >> reporter: yesterday, near central avenue, a high school student's health was in jeopardy as he had a seizure. >> the person ended up being transported through the hospital. it was learned this person probably overdosed, and on a drug called d.o.c. >> reporter: that's what they were told it was. it has both hallucinogenic effects like lsd and speeding

effects like methamphetamine. >> a zombie like state, the person is sort of out of it. but they're very hyper aware, and hyper sensitive. they can see real well, and hear really well, but they're out of it. >> reporter: he told me, he's friends of the boy who is a sophomore here. >> i was shocked. i never knew that would happen. i hope he's okay. >> reporter: the superintendent says the student is recovering. >> the kid had a couple tough rough hours. but is doing much better now. >> reporter: the district and police are warning the school community about this dangerous new drug. if the friend is any indication, perhaps this incident has scared many kids. >> i'm never going to do that. if this happens to my friend, i'm never going to do that. not even weed. >> reporter: police have had little experience with the drug, but they say it comes in a variety of forms, including

pills and drops. an association ever notorious killer charles manson was granted parole for the third time, but the judge still has to approve it. davis was given a life sentence. now 71, he has been granted parole twice before, but both arnold schwartzenegger and jerry brown reversed the decision. jennifer kearns was running the campaign for tim donnelly, and was featured prominently in the ad. kearns was pictured firing guns and talking tough, but "the los angeles times" said kearns was concerned because donnelly wasn't take her advice.

that included donnelly posting a video of him online firing a weapon. here are the candidates, carney, tim donnelly, and of course democrat incompetent, jerry brown. powerful winds caused daniel today. one of the boats is damaged beyond repair. sailers say high tides ripped the boats from anchors this morning. there was a lot of debris left behind. it's all expected to be removed in the next few days. also today, the high winds and choppy waters led to the cancelations of tours at alcatraz. those people left holding tickets will receive automatic refunds, if they used a credit cards. if you paid in cash, you'll have to visit pier 33.

involving craigslist, and why you need to be extra careful, even if you're meeting a seller in a public location. the frightening story of what happened to a woman who went to buy some cell phones. >> reporter: she was meeting the seller here at this public target. she wanted to buy cell phones, but then got cold feet, and it turns out for good reason. the internet brings a garage sale to your laptop. while shopping for a bargain this week, police say a san jose woman wanting to buy cell phones on craigslist found trouble instead. >> apparently those products were never showed to the victim. the victim in turn felt like something was wrong here. >> reporter: police say she arranged with the seller to meet in this parking lot. at the meeting changed her mind about buying. the victim told police that's when a second man appeared, forced her into her car at gunpoint, and made her drive to

a bank where they ordered her to withdrawal money. it didn't stop there. >> the suspect returned later and demanded that the victim provide additional money that she did not have. >> reporter: she called a friend to bring more money. it's not the first time a craigslist cell phone purchase has gone terribly wrong. police shot and wounded a suspect who brandished a gun at them after pistol whipping a couple he purchased an iphone from. >> i use craigslist all the time. i always try to meet at a public place. i've never had anything bad happen to me. >> i brought my sister along with me. i knew i had somebody with me. i wasn't worried at all. >> reporter: the robbers in this case let the victims go

after they had the money. this target is on capitol avenue in east san jose. if you were here monday around 9:00, and saw anything you think might be suspicious, san jose police would like to hear from you. environmental groups are pushing apple to stop using two chemicals. they have launched an online petition on behalf of the factory workers who put them together in china. apple says the use of the substances are in compliance with u.s. safety laws. one goes a step further, restricting how private schools and public entities use

personal data. supporters have until november 8 to gather enough signatures to qualify for the ballot. the ordinance bans gun magazines that can hold more than 10 bullets. today, anthony kennedy rejected an emergency request from the national rifle association to block the law. the nra is still pursuing its case in the appellant courts. now the search for malaysia airlines flights 207. chinese satellite had picked up images. these images of what were believed to be possibly parts of that plane. they were taken the day off the boeing 777 vanished. they were found in the waters northeast of where the plane took off last friday.

from a drone flying overhead. ross baronger said he used it to get this footage. bay area firefighters have to be prepared for all kinds of fires. high rise fires present their own challenges. ktvu's mike mibach talked with the assistant chief in training for such fires, and learned some of the danger signs. >> reporter: san francisco's station 5. >> initially, we'll send two engines. >> reporter: bosstell is describing the first move in the following scenario. >> if i show up, and i have one rink on, and visible fire showing from a window, that tells me immediately that the redundant systems in that building with failed. >> reporter: it's these wet sand pipes that are key in the

fire fight. he says they deliver water up to every floor, allowing firefighters to go upstairs, top into the pipe. >> we'll connect that to a hose line be and the two engine crews make a lead up, and attack the fire. >> reporter: the assist chief says yesterday's fire took off, because it was a lightweight wood building under construction. no sprinklers in place, and no sheetrock. some folks living in the city's high rises didn't seemed phased by the fire. >> we shouldn't worry about it too much. >> but the fire department does. >> for every one crew on the floor, you've got to have two other crews up there. you'll be rotating these crews out. >> reporter: the assistant says the high rise fires are a lot

tougher to fight. the department trains every year for a high rise fire, it is an event it says it does not hope to see down the road. hawaii. that's where the search has shifted for an ecoterrorism suspect from the bay area. the fbi says it has what it calls credible intelligence that daniel andreas san diego is on the big island there. he's charged two fires. one at chiron in emeryville. the other as shack head inquiries. the fbi offered a quarter million dollars reward for information leading to his capture. elderly and disabled residents forced to live

chances are an emergency situation has happened. but some parts of contra costa county, some times go by while crews respond. county leaders say they served 600,000 people that goes on 50,000 calls a year. working on an ordinance that would bring in much needed funds. >> we are looking at imposing a first responder fee, on insurance companies for our paramedics. >> reporter: right now, only private companies get paid. services done by firefighters before a person is taken to the hospital. >> state law allows us to pose

a fee. we wouldn't have to do this if we didn't have to close five fire stations. >> reporter: there are five closed stations in the district. if he keeps others from closing, some say they support the idea. >> if that's how they have to raise revenues, they have to look at all of their options. >> if it's going to benefit us all, i would prefer to have that. >> reporter: the fee has yet to be determined, but this is not a new idea. we've learned that a station in novato have similar ideas. police are searching for a hit and run driver tonight. he seriously injured a motorcyclist in pleasanton. the crash happened last night around 5:00 p.m. on stone ridge drive. police say the motorcyclist suffered major injuries, but is

expected to survive. police say the driver is described as latino in his 30s, with black hair. it had tinter rear windows, and a fiberglass bed cover. hit and run drivers could lose their licenses under a bill. it was authored by mike gado. he says the current law is problematic, because they are based on how bad is driver is hurt. >> we're cautiously optimistic there will be a strong message sent to people who otherwise hit and rub. - - and run.

>> violaters would also face a $5,000 fine, and jail time. a felon accused of trying to run down two police officers appeared in court. the incident left one officer with a gunshot wound in his shoulder. this surveillance video shows the arrest of jeffrey ruano. he is charged with felony assault for allegedly backing his car toward officers. police say one of the officers opened fire during the incident in self-defense. investigators said they don't know who fired the shot who hit the other officer. police say when ruano was arrested, he did have ammunition with him, but no gun. tenants and clenitina towers say they've spent hours away from their homes, because there are no elevators.

>> reporter: today the elevators are working, but these pictures show that's not always the case. the elderly, and disabled tenants often see these orange signs, indicating the elevators are out of service. it's no surprise. >> it's like playing the lottery. there's no telling where you're going to go. >> reporter: he was once trapped in the elevator, and had to squeeze out the doors. >> i came down the stairs, one step at a time. >> seven stories down. >> i've informed our property manager, all the way up to the office of the mayor, and in between. all of that time, i have yet to get a response. >> reporter: now residents have made a legal claim against the san francisco housing authority

claiming emotional disstress on behalf of the residents. some residents told under the circumstances, they think the elevator started working again because of the legal action. >> it's the first time they have worked in a very long time. >> reporter: a housing authority representative told us by phone, it is trying to stay o top of the broken elevator issue. the representative also said, it's number 1 concern is the health and well-being of its tenants. an update on all of those troubles with the employment development department that we've been reporting on since last summer. lawmakers called on the state auditor today to find out why judges are overturning more than half of the edd's denials for claims. they have been under scrutiny. a massive computer glitch delayed payments to as many as

new york city firefighters are searching for what remains of two five story buildings in harlem that were damaged in a huge explosion. at least three people were killed, and nine others are still missing. >> soom -- some of the people who used to live there said they smelled gas last night. >> reporter: the explosion could be felt for blocks. terrifying people in the area. >> the pictures on the wall came off the wall. the explosion was a very large blast. >> the lady just hugged me. it was the glass from the store

that just popped open. >> reporter: two brick apartment buildings were destroyed. one also held a piano store. the other a store front church. payment was littered with broken glass in the east harlem neighborhood. crews worked to try to contain the flames from a five-alarm fire. one person who lives nearby, says he smelled gas last night. >> my neighbor, comes and talks to us. we check everything. new york city mayor bill de blasio toured the damage and says the explosion appears to have been caused by gas leak. a blast leak was reported to conedison. the explosion happened immediately before they arrive. >> there was no indication in time to save people. >> reporter: those who were

injured were taken to several area hospitals. mayor de blasio says the rubble will be searched to see if anyone else is trapped inside. in the name of progress, there may be huge traffic delays on interstate 5 in the coming weeks. giant flood gates that were made in washington state by the army corps of engineers are headed to folsom dam. up with -- one at a time. it's a distance of six miles on i-5, and will only be done overnight. >> one major piece is expected to get to folsom on friday. damage is being refurbished, and that is expected to be done in thee years. a ground breaking ceremony

target is underfire tonight for a major photoshop fiasco that some say is contributing

to unhealthy body image. heather holmes is live with target's controversial add, and the outrage it's creating. >> reporter: most people know that magazines do a little bit of re-touching. but i want you to take a look at what one of target's so- called retouchers did to an ad that is targeted to body conscious teens. photoshop phoneyness, caught transforming images of a young girl in a bikini. shaving off part of her hips, thighs, and waist. you can even see a sliver of skin, where they tried to slim down her arms. >> this girl is beautiful the way she is, and doesn't need a thigh gap, or excess space around her body. >> reporter: we showed it to bay area teens who tell us, they wish companies would drop the up realistic barbie-like shape. >> i try to tell myself, it's

photoshoped. you see these girls and you're like, why don't i look like that? >> they're trying to create an image that no girl can live up to. >> reporter: the body positive, a bay area cooperative, that teaches girls to live healthier lives. >> creating a side gap for younger girls and teens is deadly. >> reporter: she overcame her obsession with weight, but an eating disorder killed her older sister stephanie at the age of 36. she is disappointed advertisers continue to send unhealthy messages to girls. >> they don't care what the girl does to look like the image of the girl wearing the swimming suit. they just want to sell the suit. >> reporter: target pulled the ad from its website. but critics hope the retailer has learned a lesson, and will end its body editing.

heather holmes, ktvu, channel 2 news. too much homework could actually be a bad thing for students. the study found more than two hours of homework a night could be counterproductive for students. the study was based on a sample of 4300 students from ten high performing high schools in upper middle class communities. some analysts say investors are taking a break after three record highs last week. yahoo and yelp are teaming up in an effort to figure out what users are interested in. beginning today, people searching yahoo online will also see ratings and excerpts

from yelp. the government today officially ordered the recall of 1 million fitbit force. more than 10,000 people have been affected. they are offering recalls for the $129 device. it counts on individual steps, and monitors sleep. the company says it will have an updated version out soon. not as windy as last night, certainly, nowhere near as windy. this time last night, we had gusts up to 50 miles per hour in the east bay hills. temperatures today, wound up like this. 76 in santa rosa. 75 in napa. 74 in livermore. 74 in antioch. temperatures today very warm. temperatures tomorrow stay that way. i think they'll be very similar to today. it's going to be just about the same temperature. the jet streams go well to the

north. rain can't get in here. the red lines are taking everything to the north and the east of us. that means dry, dry, dry. it also means warm, warm, warm. overnight lows tonight are going to be upper 30s, lower 40s. a lot like last night, but without the wind, and certainly cooler. clear and breezy out there tonight. the one thing the wind does is really clean up the atmosphere. when you look out from ocean beach tomorrow and see the fair lawns, or look up north, you can see a long way. you can see the crescent of the sierra nevada. we're going to start noticing increased pollen counts. increased tree pollen counts. it's going to warm up. lots of upper 60s, just like
