and you were looking right now at a live picture of the breaking news that we're following. san francisco police on the scene of a shooting where at least six people are injured good evening, i'm heather holmes. >> and i'm ken wayne. it appears six people were shot, the shooting happened about an hour ago. possibly more people. this all happened in the city's tenderloin district. san francisco police say it appears to have been a drive by shooting. christien kafton is live on the scene with the very latest.

what can you tell us christien. >> reporter: this gentleman just tried to enter the crime scene a moment ago and was stopped by the police. so clearly police taking the situation very, very seriously. let's give you a look at the intersection here of turk and taylor. this entire intersection shut downright now. a lot of the focus seems to be in front of the king market there. here again at the intersection of turk and taylor. what we are hearing at this point from san francisco police is we have six victims. we're hearing three victims have been transported to san francisco general hospital. they are expected to survive. we're hearing some indications this may have been a drive by style shooting. at this point there's no official description of the shooter or the vehicle that may have been involved in this shooting investigation. right now the intersection of turk and taylor as you can see

completely shutdown for this investigation and shut down for one block in each direction. at this point officers confirming this was in fact, the shooting as many as six victims. we're hearing three transported to san francisco general hospital. at this point, no description of the shooter, we're hearing at this point there's no one in custody. so this obviously a very dynamic situation and still developing out here. if you take a look there in front of the king market. you can see a lot of the evidence markers. again that seems to be the focus of the investigation at this point. we will continue to stay on scene and bring you updates as we bring more information from there. we are live here in san francisco. christien kafton, ktvu channel 2 news. christien, i know you just arrived on scene, is there any way of knowing if the victims were targeted, or they just happen to be random people on the sidewalk who got caught in some kind of cross fire? >> reporter: at that point it's unclear. police have said that there were six victims. we're hearing three of them transported to the hospital.

we're hearing that no life threatening injuries. we haven't heard of any fatalities at this point but that's clearly one of the avenues that people are pursuing to make sure this wasn't a targeted shooting and who was the target of the shooting. >> we will continue to have updates throughout this newscast as we get more information, thank you, christien kafton. several firefighters raced to put out a fast moving fire in the commercial area of downtown vallejo. that four alarm fire broke out on california street and sonoma boulevard. debora villalon has learned this is the sixth like fire there. >> reporter: this fire really stretched the department thin. every rig, every firefighter who was on duty was called here for what turned out to be a vacant building. it was reported as a grass fire

but even before they got here, crews saw the billowing black smoke and knew it was much more. in this abandoned auto shop, tires were burns and embers drifting to near by properties. a business owner was worried. >> people throw trash here, it's an empty lot. people throw garbage, everything. >> i live right here and i was in my living room watching tv and i saw the flames. >> reporter: the caretaker who called the fire in, knew right off what started it. homeless people who showed up recently with tarps and propane tanks and betted down on the fence line close to the building. >> there's seven of them. they had a tent. a week ago they started a little bar-be-que pit and i caught them. and i put it out. they ignored me. >> reporter: that fire started in that encampment, possibly

the bar-be-que pit. a week ago a near by warehouse caught fire, possibly by homeless. this one across from mayer island merged with a second fire sending a few dozen inhabitants but back they came. >> they were trying to break down. they keep riding up on their bikes and coming over here with their shopping carts and trying to break back in. >> a lot of men, a lot of family members there. >> reporter: today one woman brought a memorial from when her family owned the place. >> me and my brothers and

sisters all cooked there. >> reporter: many of them are full of toxic, so they're not easily torn down or developed. reporting live in vallejo, debora villalon, ktvu channel 2 news. san lorenzo police are investigating a drive by shooting that injured two people today. it happened at 6:00 this evening at via carmen and via santa vista. it was not a random shooting. they have not released details about what kind of vehicle they were looking for. they do say the victim suffered injuries that are not life threatening. developing news in washington state. where the search continues for those swept away in that mile wide landslide. tonight the death toll there has climbed to eight with at least 18 others still missing. rescue efforts are continuing but the situation there is extremely dangerous with the mud the consistency of quick sand still moving.

firefighters who surveyed that area today said there are no signs of life. as many as 30 homes were reduced to fragments in seconds yesterday. and the rural town of oso that's 60 miles north of seattle in sonomish county. >> i was in awe, it reminded me of the photographs that you would see and the video that we saw when mount st. helens erupted. >> reporter: ground saturation caused the slide leaving feet of mud, trees trees stumps and debris covered. officials said they heard screaming coming from one house but conditions were too bad for

updating now our breaking news. the shooting at the tenderloin district. you can see san francisco police officers on the scene, yellow tape on the sidewalk and those evidence markings on the street and the sidewalk. we're now being told by san

francisco pd that seven people have been shot. earlier it was six, now we hear seven people shot. police say early indications are that this was a drive by shooting but no suspect description has been released on the people or the vehicle involved. police remain on the scene and there are many technicians there in the area. we will have more updates throughout the rest of this newscast. new developments to tell you about tonight in the search for malaysian flight 270. today transsaid -- france said that some of its satellite shows potential debris. it's roughly the same distance where those satellite images of potential objects were reported from china and australia last

week. the french data showed up 700 miles north of that area. >> we went out in the area, we assessed the conditions, unfortunately they have deteriorated since our last outing. >> 10 planes are now set to scour that massive search area that is now about 28,000 square miles. that area is called the roaring 40s. known for its ferocious winds and fast currents and waves that can grow to 30 feet. a horrific crash in san leandro resulted in one death. the head on crash last night on east 14th street near davis killed a 32-year-old man and injured his passenger. their identities have not yet been released. police say 19-year-old jesus

godines from vallejo was speeding and driving drunk. he's in the hospital. police say they will take him to jail when he is released from the hospital. police in santa rosa are looking at whoever shot a man who was sleeping in his car outside of the police station. police say the 21-year-old victim was wounded in the leg and is expected to recover. police say the victim told them two people in another car fired at him then took off. investigators say they found that vehicle several blocks away but it was empty. there's no word tonight on a motive. a 16-year-old marysville boy is being remembered as a hero for sacrificing his life to save the life of his girlfriend. dozens of people gathered to remember mateas moore. moore was walking on the track with mikaela france when the train kaepl up behind them. the engineer blew the horn but

crews are making progress on an oil spill along the texas coast. they have removed the remaining oil from that barge that was leaking oil in galveston bay. it was damaged in a collision with a ship yesterday. crews are trying to keep the oil from spreading with booms as they work to clean it up. the shipping channel has been closed for the clean up. two people were overcome by fumes during the initial incident. there have also been scattered reports of wildlife injuries. tomorrow is the 26th anniversary of the valdise oil

spill. one of the worse oil spill disasters in history. fined $5 million in punitive damages the company now calls exxonmobil spent about a billion in fines and 2 billion in clean up costs. prolific character actor jeff redhorn has died. red horn most recently appeared on homeland where he played the father of carrie's character. he also starred on meet the parents, and homeland. he was 65 years old. michelle obama made a visit to the great wall of china. they walked ahead of security

continuing coverage now on the breaking news we've been following throughout the newscast. police updated us on the number of victims saying seven people were shot tonight in the tenderloin. christien kafton is live now on the scene with what else he's

learned about this shooting, christien. >> reporter: just in the last two minutes or so we spoke to the police captain. and he's given us more of an update. there's an investigation going on at turk and taylor. the focus of the investigation appears to be on king market. that seems to be a congregation a large crowd of people there in front of that liquor store either coming in or out or congregating in or out. they now update that number of victims to be seven. in other words seven victims now transported to area hospitals. we're hearing that there have been no fatalities. no one killed in this shooting. even though this may have been a drive by shooting. nobody issuing a description of the shooting or any vehicle that may have been involved. the intersection of turk and taylor shut down now for an hour and a half or so while police conduct this investigation. it's also closed down for at

least a block in each direction. now, since i spoke to you about a half hour ago, i had a chance to speak to an apartment manager near by and i'm told that their surveillance cameras are aimed toward the area where this shooting happened. san francisco police now inside that apartment complex trying to review that video and see if there is actual video evidence of this shooting. hoping that can lead them to a suspect. at this point no suspect in custody. what we know at this point now, the updated number from san francisco police, seven people shot and transported to area hospitals following the shooting that happened seven minutes before 9:00. we're expecting another update from san francisco police in about six or seven minutes or so. for now we're live here in san francisco, christien kafton, ktvu channel 2 news. now to our drought coverage. farmers say as water becomes more scarce, pay goes up. if they don't pass that cost up

to the customers they will go out of business. cuevas says the drought is starting to have a real effect. one of the major canals that feeds his farm is already bone dry and that means options for water are limited. >> if he's going to charge more for the water, all we can get our own well but it'll be more expensive to build a well. >> no one knows exactly how much cost can go up. vendors say shoppers can expect higher prices on water intensive crops including tomatoes, melons and peaches. feed costs can also go up which will increase costs for beef. a woman told ktvu that a

man offered to do tree trimming for her. but made repeated sexual suggestions and even came back to take pictures through her windows. he left his business card with the woman and police were able to set up a sting operation. police are looking for other potential victims in this case. the theft of an atm will cost a small east bay market thousands of dollars. someone broke into the farm bureau market in concord just before 5:00 this morning and yanked out an atm right off the wall. the machine wasn't flushed of cash but the costs to repair will be $900. >> for 500 or $600 you're going to do that much damage? >> reporter: this is second atm stolen from the area.

13,000 union employees were set to walk off the job tomorrow at 5uc hospitals including ucsf. a bargaining session produced a contract proposal. the union says in new contract includes fair wage increases, secure benefits, rank in file members are set to vote on this deal next week. covered california's open enrollment deadline is march 31st. as ktvu's noelle walker tells us the insurance exchange is doing outreach in one last final push to try to get people to sign up. >> with just a week left to enroll in covered california. >> i don't have insurance. >> reporter: sheila stafford has been looking at her

options. >> just some where i can see. >> reporter: the 53-year-old grandmother is one of thousands who came out to a covered california outreach. >> we understand people may feel a little frustration online, that's why we urge people to go out to an outreach. >> you can go four or five different places just to sign up for insurance, that's stressful. >> reporter: sheila's job doesn't offer coverage, she's been uninsured for two years. >> i've been paying out of pocket but insurance is too high. my check is not big enough to pay rent and pay my insurance. >> reporter: under health care reform there's a penalty for not having insurance, $95 a
