. complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is the 10:00 news on ktvu channel 2. moments for people who jump into the frigid waters to escape a raging fire. good evening, i'm ken wayne, heather holmes is off tonight. a day of fun in the sun on san francisco bay almost turned to tragedy as people had to don their life jackets. we have more information on the dramatic rescue and cara liu is

in san francisco. we have seen salvage crews pull boat out of water and lift it and put it onto this barge that you see behind me. it's been a very difficult task taking about 3.5 hours to this point. firefighters telling us there was so much damage to the boat it was starting to fall apart. a salvage crew spent hours trying to pull the burned boat out of arm near the army corps of engineers dock in sausalito. on the bay near tiburon and you could see it from your home in san rafael. >> i saw black smoke, big plume of black smoke, rising just above the hill out that way-eight people adults and kids were on the boat when it started to get smoky and unbearably hot. the coast guard says they told them to put on their life jackets and jump into the water and link their arms to stay together.

>> before they went into the water they were able to get the attention of a neighboring boat. the neighboring boated came over and picked them up. so they were only in the water for a short period of time. >> firefighters arrives moments later to tend to the victims and put out the fire, rescue series estimate that they were in the ought 5-10 minutes. >> it's a terrifying day on the bay, but fortunately they had all the right equipment with them and it has a happy ending are the. >> reporter: these photos show how much damage there was to the watercraft and can't tell yet where or how the fire started. live in sausalito, cara liu, ktvu channel 2 news. right now bay area rescue crews are still working to rescue a family stranded on a sailboat about 900 miles off

the coast of mexico. at 10:15 we'll latest is op their attempts to rescue that little girl and her family and the equipment that they say will help bring them to safety. now to the warm weather across the bay area. it's been a big change from all of that rain we saw earlier in the week. as you can see from these pictures people were outside enjoying it. on the left we found several people in lake merritt this afternoon and on the right people got to spend some time at the beach near berkeley. meteorologist mark tamayo in the weather center. >> ken, right around 70 degrees and the rain clouds have moved out of town. rapid clearing into the afternoon hours and we started to warm up for your saturday, temperatures ranging from the upper 50s in pacifica and low

"bicycleicle a billist called police and said the woman appeared to have suffered head trauma.

police have not released her identity and so far no arrests have been made. berkeley police have identified the violent of a pedestrian accident who was a well-known bay area psychologist and professor. 9-year-old joseph luft taught at foreman university and was a professor at stanford university. he and a colleague created the johari window a way to explain personality. luft's family says he was on his daily walk at bancroft way when as we hit just a few yards from his home the driver is cooperating with police. new developments on a pair of robberies in part of the east bay that is not known for violent crime. tonight we learned those two crimes were likely relate. as ktvu's john sasaki reports one was an armed robbery and another an attempted robbery. >> reporter: downtown walnut creek is known for nordstrom, neiman marcus and nightlife, but last night a

brazen crime may have weakened the feeling secret that many have at broadway plaza. >> there was a woman at the corner tavern who was robbed at gunpoint of her purse. >> reporter: the woman left the restaurant and walked to her directly outside when the armed man demand her purse and pulledded it from here. >> the victim saw what appeared to be a black handgun. >> reporter: the robber got in a small red getway car driven by another man and sped away. the victim was unhurt. across from the movie theater in pleasant hill police say there was an tempted robbery inside the parking structure. the robbery was unsuccessful and victims have since told investigators that the robber armed with a black handgun got into a red honda accord and took off. >> we always tell people safety in numbers and don't walk your car by yourself, always be vigilant. >> police say there was a

robbery outside of walnut creek creek's yogurt land. these crimes have many people being careful. >> you just have to be aware of what is around and not spending your time look at your phone and just be aware your surroundings. >> reporter: with the same description of the robber and the car and even the gun, police believe that the two crimes were committed by the same people. in walnut creek i'm john sasaki, ktvu channel 2 news. at 10:30 caught on-camera, a bay area store clerk turns the gun on the man trying to rob him. what the clerk didn't know about that gun and why he says he probably shouldn't have done it. police many modesto are investigating a stabbing at a young girl's slumber party. police say a 13-year-old girl stabbed her 11-year-old sister and 13-year-old friend this morning before turning the

knife on herself. their mother called 911 after hearing screams. two of the girls are in critical condition and the girl suspected of the stabbing is in serious, but stable condition. >> the 11-year-old playing out here and to find out later on that she is one of the ones stabbed it's just like i just saw her out playing yesterday. >> neighbors say she may have special needs. investigators won't confirm that, but they did say they are not sure if she will face charges. new developments in the search for malaysia airlines flight 370, a chinese ship is reporting that it picked up a ping that may be from the missing plane's black box, but that has not been confirmed. this report could be another false lead in the mystery, but it could lead to finding out what really happened to flight 370. reporter marley henneberger tells us what they found and the questions of how the chinese governmentry veiled its findings are c. china state-run media is saying that the chinese ship deployed to a black box detector into

the water in the southern indian ocean and picked up a pulse signal. a ping. at 37.5 kilhertz. that is the same frequency that pings are emitted from the flight data recorders. chinese say one of their air force planes spotted white floating objects in that search area. malaysian authorities say they are trying to verify this report. but there is say healthy dose of skepticism about this ping, in part because it came from chinese media reports and not from international coordinator of the search, chief marshall houston who said he was advised of the chinese reports, but so far there is no confirration that the ping and floating objects are related to the missing malaysian jet. one fox military analyst says that the chinese should have gone through the proper channels with this new information. >> it should have been reported to air chief marshall houston. he should have sent out people to look at and see if they got

. in sacramento county low water levels in the american river actually helped with a massive river clean-up today. organizers say more than 600 people took part in the 2014 spring clean-up day. it's been canceled in the past because of high water, but this

year the drought made it easier for volunteers to get around and pick up all the debris. organizers estimate they le moved more than 10,000 pounds trash area debris, scattered along a 23-mile stretch of the river. and with the warm temperatures the snow pack in the sierra will begin to melt over next few days at least that process will begin and it's an important water supply for a good portion -- basically for the entire state. for today, mostly clear skies. right now patchy fog making a comeback and i think that will bump up into the overnight hours. right now we're in the clear. as you can see with basically dry conditions out there as well. if you are heading to the coast, just be extra careful we have stronger rip currents developing. the swell is not giant. you can see the buoy reports 6- ', but the wow water is moving around and be
