neighborhood are angry tonight about a construction project. they say they don't want what they call a mini dorm going up in their neighborhood. happening now. >> reporter: the neighbors are so upset they took their fight to city hall. everyone though they were not on tonight's agenda they said they're fed up. a new development project may change its character. >> we're right next door to ground zero. >> reporter: neighboring tell us construction work start on this home recently without any notice. they tell us the new owners want to turn this home into student housing. >> complete shock, anger. everything. >> reporter: neighbors say the new home is designed to attract students from near by santa clara university. homeowners say the developers want to turn this into a mini dorm. >> the noise, the litter. the red cups that certain areas around here are known for. we're going to be victimized for. >> they found this ad on the

website. >> 2325 park ave. >> reporter: once it's expanded to six bedrooms and three baths. it now appears the ad has been taken down. >> we did not invest to live next door to an animal house. >> reporter: this home that has been transformed into studenting housing. people that live here say there's 24 people living inside. >> i am glad the neighbors realized what was going on and brought this to council. >> reporter: there's a growing movement to develop student housing in the area that needs more monitoring. >> we need to work as a city on keeping these neighborhoods intact. keying them authentic. >> reporter: we asked city leaders tonight when this issue will be put on the city council

meeting agenda. they tell me it is scheduled for the next city council meeting two weeks from tonight. live in santa clara, amber lee, k the, -- ktvu channel 2 news. we checked how much demand there is for housing near the university. just over half of students live on campus the others live in homes or apartments off campus. new at 10:00, an internet security that could pose sensitive information of anyone who uses a computer. it's called the heart bleed bug and it's used to transmit sensitive data. pass words, bank accounts and social security numbers could be at risk. the heart bleed bug was just discovered a few days ago but it's been in operation now for two years. one problem it doesn't leave any trace. yahoo mail was one of the sites vulnerable to that heart plead bug but a spokesperson now says there's a security patch.

and the same goes for yahoo, search, finance, sports, flicker and tumbler. yahoo is working on its own websites. it says there's no evidence of attack using the heart bleed bug. other search sites like google and apple are not vulnerable. once a security patch is concerned change your pass words on sensitive accounts. contact small businesses who may have your information to make sure their site is secure and always keep a close watch on your financial statements for the next several days. new video tonight of a take over robbery in pleasant hill. arm robbers went into the store. they stole phones and money from the stores and from customers. the safe was also opened. the robbers got away. investigators are still in the store and at this point no one

has been arrested. police in oakland delivered positive news tonight. crime in that city is down so far this year. and they point to both successes and challenges around the city. ktvu's jana katsuyama was at a briefing by the police chiefs tonight. she's live now after pouring over 54 pages of data that was presented. jana. >> reporter: frank one thing that i learned tonight is that jack london square is considered a hot spot for burglaries from automobiles. tonight we heard from police on what they're trying to do in other neighborhoods to stop crime. oakland police say city wide they've seen a 16% reduction this year. at a meeting tonight, the police chief says murder, gun assault, raper, robbery and murders are down.

>> robberies are down 36% for the year to date as of yesterday. >> reporter: police captains who oversee each of the scenarios proceeded to announce decreases. they're seeing a problem with street races near the port. police say they issued 62 citations and had 152 i 152 -- i -- incidents of breaking up races over the last year. area three has a big problem with human trafficking. the commander says they are seeing many teenage prostitutes along international boulevard between 16th and 18th avenue. >> we have arrested about 100 individuals so far this year associated with human trafficking. >> reporter: in area four police say they're trying to stop a trend of street robberies. targeting people with cell phones, money and gold chains at sidewalks and vehicles. in east oakland, the commissioner says they are

trying to reduce gangs. residents voiced their concerns. >> i'm still seeing a lot of criminal activity myself for example. my car got broken into from the side shows. they have the shows coming through and somebody trashed my car. >> reporter: some people say they hope these numbers remain low but they do want more police accountability. and partnering with community groups. reporting live in oakland, jana katsuyama, ktvu channel 2 news. and overflow crowd showed up for hillary clinton as she launched a west coast speaking tour. she addressed issues from immigration to the haves and have nots. >> inequality of the kind we're experiencing is bad for our economy. >> the former secretary of state said russian president

putin will have to be contained through economic sanctions. >> he is going to pose a threat to first and formost people on his borders then broader europe and beyond. so we just have to be you know patient and strategic in how we deal with him. >> reporter: she did address a possible presidential run in 2016 saying she's quote thinking about it and not ready to make a decision. state senator leland yee faced a judge today. he's facing federal corruption and gun trafficking charges. ktvu's david steveson -- stevenson was in the courthouse for today's arrangement. and shrimp boy chow has now hired a high profile attorney. >> reporter: suspended state senator leland yee pled not guilty. in court yee told the judge yes, sir when asked if he understood the felony charges.

yee's wife agreed to place their home as collateral for bail. his attorney failed to comment on the case. keith jackson the san francisco consultant who is said to have gathered bribes for yee appeared in court. tony serra and a new lawyer for raymond "shrimp boy" chow says that they entrapped his client over the five year investigation. >> we will put the government rightfully on trial. we believe there's lots of malfeasance. >> the government is supposed to investigate but they're not here to create the crime. to entize people. to give them the money, to give them the liquor. to give them the narcotics. >> reporter: for now chow is being held without bail and is expected to enter a not guilty

plea next tuesday. in san francisco, david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. allegations tonight that he violated campaign finance regulations. san lecardo is currently a city council member. but opponents of his bid for mayor say lecardo has held fundraisers outside of the time limits for raising contributions. a complaint has also been filed with the fair political practices commission. lecardo's campaign gave us this statement reading in part this kind of frivolous complaint has sadly become the norm in san jose campaigns? the old eastern span has come down. a 50-foot gap has been opened as demolition crews begin the pain staking task of taking the bridge down in reverse order.

mosquito and vector control spent the day conducting a door to door inspection. >> that's definitely enough for a mosquito to breed in. >> they're looking for yellow fever mosquito. >> it's an attempt to stop the denge or yellow fever. >> reporter: this invasive species surfaced last summer in menlo park near holy cross cemetery. it was the first time yellow fever mosquitoes were found in the bay area in decades. after finding mosquitoes in that same neighborhood in just the past week, they expressed concern. >> we had to rearrange this recently which caused probably an increase in the breeding population of the mosquito larvae. so we're expecting the populations to increase over the next few weeks that's why we're brigging on additional members to do the door to door inspections. >> reporter: neighbors say they're trying to do their park

eliminating any stagnant water in their yards where mosquitoes might breed. >> we take it more seriously like looking for standing water after the rain. making sure we don't have anything containers collecting water. i have little kids and the last thing we want is mosquitoes carrying disease in our neighborhood. >> reporter: while it's very unusual there are occasionally cases where people traveling abroad come back here with denge or yellow fever. that's why they're throwing a lot of resources at this problem hoping to nip it in the bud. cara liu. san jose fire investigators now say a large fire that we told you about last night was not the work of an arsonist. they're calling it accidental. today people returned to see what's left on the homes on moss brook circle. the fire destroyed one home and damaged two others. investigators say they're still trying to figure out what started the fire. firefighters say the wide open design of the homes made it

easier for the flames to spread. >> early voting results from bodega bay show voters are rejecting measure a which would increase their taxes. the homeowners would see their $500 a year fire district tax go up by $200. businesses would pay even more. supporters say the fire protection district may have to lay off a third of its staff and rely on volunteers who may not be able to respond to emergencies quickly. again tonight it appears voters do not want to pay hundreds of dollars more. >> a bill in sacramento that would phase out the use of killer whales and theme park shows have been heard throughout the measure. the bill's author says he was inspired by the black fish documentary and believes orcas do not thrive in captivity. sea world and other parks argue the animals are treated humanely. what a day for the giants

a berkeley police officer is recovering after being attacked and nearly having his gun taken away by his attacker. this is renewing talk about equipping police officers with tasers. >> reporter: minutes after the police officer approached the man he found himself in the ground being punched in the face. >> being hit multiple times in the face and head. kicked multiple times. so it was an extremely brutal day tack. >> reporter: chris stines says the officer was beaten unconsciously and woke up to his gun being tried to take off

released from the hospital last night and is recovering. a drunk driver who killed a high school girl on her 17th birthday was sentenced today to six months in jail. 29-year-old brewer pled guilty last month in the death of hanlin chan. the teen was crossing the street when she was killed. in court today brewer expressed his sorrow and remorse. in addition to the jail term, he faces home detention and five years probation. he's just 9 years old, tonight at 10:45 a 10-year-old boy's heroic actions after a snow mobile accident caused his fath

helped police find the suspect. >> once police saw it they recognized the suspect right away. >> reporter: police hosted this workshop telling residents how to set up a surveillance network. police say there was a 27% drop in residential burglaries. police say the cameras act as deterrents and help put away suspects. residents said they can adapt the tips to their neighborhoods. >> it can work any where. i think right now home burglaries are very common. >> reporter: crime victims say video and photos can be invaluable. this man was stabbed four times in the chest at a fremont gas station in a road rage attack. he says a witness used their smart phone to take pictures of

australian officials are reporting some encouraging news on the search for the malaysian flight 370. a ping detector has picked up a

signal. they were heard twice today for five minutes and seven minutes this comes after similar detections last saturday. an analysis shows a signal did not come from a natural source they came from an automatic signal. >> i expect it to be a flight data recorder. >> reporter: the discovery allows the search to be concentrated to a more specific area. everyone though authorities stress it will take time to solve the mystery of flight 370 and the 329 people on board. police in antioch tonight are investigateing the death of a man they say was shot to death outside a neighborhood store. it happened shortly after 5:00 tonight in the area of d and west 19th street near the campus of antioch middle school. police say a man was found there suffering from several gunshot wounds. he was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. there is no word yet on his identity or a motive for the

shooting. new information tonight in the case of a former concord police officer accused of stealing drugs from elderly residents of a adult home. >> he actually broke into a medical facility. stole drugs, he victimized and actually went into the houses of quite a few elder people. >> this is a case about someone who fell into the prescription drug addiction.

a 9-year-old boy is being called a hero tonight for his quick thinking and coolness under pressure. >> rescuers say his actions likely saved his father's life. ktvu's john fowler spoke with the boy about his brave trip through snow for help. >> on his way home from school

brody begner feeling special. >> because i saved my life. and a lot of people are saying wow you saved your life. >> reporter: wow is right. this remote snow mobile accident could have killed bode's father. bode's dad j.t. severely injured the snow mobile trapped his leg. bode took off alone on his snow mobile to get help. >> it was a lot of pressure for me to get someone. it was really hard because i did not know where to go. he did not give me much direction. >> reporter: bode kept calm, snow mobiling until he found someone with an emergency radio. he led rescuers to his dad who is hospitalized but will recover. >> search and rescue called me and they said, your son, what he did is unbelievable. we deal with this all the time. 9-year-olds don't get on snow mobiles and leave their father and go find help and bring us back. >> bode toll us he was just doing what he thought was

right. >> reporter: bode says despite all the excitement over the weekend and his hero status he was still able to get all of his home work completed. in marin county, john fowler. and a cruise liner that left san francisco have now come down with noro virus. these are pictures of the ship called the crown princess. 56 passengers and 13 crew members reported becoming sick with noro virus symptoms. we're told the ship was sanitized it then went back to sea with all the passengers on board. the same ship reported at least 2noro virus outbreaks in 2012. the university of san francisco board of trustees announced today the school's next president reverent paul j. fitzgerald. he's a bay area native who attended santa clara university. >> he was ordained at usf.

father fitzgerald takes over on august 1st. he'll be the 28th president of the university in its 159 year history. a san francisco couple is donating $100 million to two bay area hospitals. the gift is from mark and lin bentioff. the money will be split between oakland children's hospital and ucsf children's hospital. mr.benioff has already given $100 million to ucsf and his name will be put on the children's hospital in oakland. oakland plans to do the same in january. calfire is ramping up its training and staffing for fire season a month early. authorities say it's because california's drought has made conditions extremely dry and dangerous. calfire's elite attack unit took to the air today practicing ground to air signals. they were able to get funding from state drought emergency

funds. calfire says it hired one dozen rookie firefighters early so they could be ready before fire season. >> it's going to be busy. definitely busy. you can fell if you drive highway 5 it's just dry out there. over here it's still a little green. but you know, it's going to be busy. south bay engine units will have four five fighters on board instead of three. grounds units are scheduled to start training throughout the week. temperatures in some inland spots warmer than yesterday. temperatures in some coastal spots most coastal spots cooler than yesterday. it was more of a break even the day. morgan hill and san jose maybe five in napa. 79 in vallejo. temperatures tomorrow as we head into your bay area wednesday will be good 5 degrees cooler than these. here's what's happening out there. we have a weather system offshore that's going to increase the on shore flow

basically. we will put this into motion and you will be able to see the higher clouds moving over head. and you look down the surface area. you can't see it in this imagine. there's the coastal fog working its way through the bay. they'll be playing tag at the coast. current numbers are cooling off rapidly because of the on shore winds. right now not howling but it's an on shore wind and we're seeing fog pushing over san bruno gust. with winds gusting 15 to 16 miles per hour. that's what you will expect for this time of year. currently in san francisco it's 56 degrees. it's going to be foggy out in the avenues and the fog will be back tomorrow morning and it'll linger throughout the day. 66degrees tomorrow in san francisco for a daytime high. san jose 64 right now. your daytime high down from 87 to 80 degrees. you will notice it's cooler tomorrow. most of us will notice slightly cooler but san jose you will notice a lot cooler. high pressure sits here.

as it does it allows us to stay warm inland but cooler right along the coast in the bay. so this low pressure gets closer. the on shore flow increases and temperatures trends down. it's not going to get cold. numbers last couple of days have been up there. 80s and mid-80s. fog along the coast. tomorrow morning fog. going to thursday morning fog. see how the coastal fog is back. that's indicative of on shore flow. we saw clouds move in with. friday morning more fog friday afternoon more fog. so this really does look like spring now as we get into a fog in a pattern. 72 in vallejo. almost 80 in fairfield. still like i said it's cooler but still nice. today it's pretty warm. yesterday pretty warm. right along the coast we're going to see temperatures in the mid-50s. the five day forecast with the bay area weekend in view. you can see it slight cooling trend at 20. we live in a great place.
