and that breaking news is on the bay bridge tonight, where emergency repairs have backed up traffic at this hour. good evening, everyone, i'm frank somerville. >> i'm julie hanker. several lanes on the bay bridge are closed rht now for emergency repairs to large potholes. >> and those have backed up traffic leaving the city. in fact, it was difficult for our crew to get near the bridge on downtown 1st street. the pothole is on the deck of the western span.

lanes are closed on both decks. this is video from the lower deck of the western span. the pothole opened up just after the evening commute near the tunnel. it's about two feet wide, and it's a real hazard to drivers. here's a new look from our camera in emeryville. the traffic at least right now is not backing up heading into san francisco, but again, lanes are closed on the upper, and lower deck of the western span. keep that in mind, there will be some delays. at last check, the repairs were expected to be finished around midnight. now to the search for that missing 14-year-old boy in the waters off ocean beach. from the water, the shore, and the air, the search for that teenager is now in its 6th hour. he was in the water with a cousin when their afternoon at the beach turned dangerous. cara lou is live now talking with firefighters about the

presence they'll be keeping there all night. >> reporter: the san francisco fire department is also still out here right now. they are monitoring the beach, ready to help if necessary. >> this is just another day going out to the beach to surf and i see this kid in the water. >> reporter: the 17-year-old is still processing it all, but firefighters call him a hero. they say a family member was playing in the water when two boys, cousins both got swept out by a rip current. the father of one of the teens went in to help. that's when barbero saw a boy in the water, put him on his surfboard, and paddled in. then he went out to the adult to help. >> i grab him by the arm, i dragged him in. paramedics took it from there, and the kid is in shock. it was like, it happened so fast, i thought he was dead in

the water. >> reporter: paramedics were abe to revive the man and get his pulse going. he was rushed to the hospital. tony says he never saw the other teen. tony is also the son of a fire captain. >> i'm a little shocked, but not surprised. tony is a good kid, and he's always trying to help others. >> reporter: about 50 firefighters along with the coast guard and park service searched for hours, trying to find the missing teen, 14-year- old marco cornejo. >> a lot of sea lions out there, we're checking out everything. >> reporter: firefighters say they tried to comfort the victim's family and their thoughts are with them tonight. the man rushed to the hospital was in critical condition. the coast guard has been searching a five mile span all the way up to the golden gate

bridge. they also plan to resume search efforts at first light. cara liu, ktvu, channel 2 news. now details on that stabbing rampage at that high school outside of pittsburgh today. a 16-year-old boy stabbed or slashed 20 students and a security officer with two kitchen knives. he was finally tackled, stopped, and arrested. now the 16-year-old suspect is being charged as an adult. here is alex hribal being led to a police car, while handcuffed and wearing a hospital gown. he is facing four counts of attempted murder, and 21 counts of aggravated assault. the district attorney says the teenager made comments that he wanted to die. meanwhile, a dozen fbi agents were seen at his home, searching for any clues as to a possible motive. this attack could have been even worse if not for the quick

action of two people. >> reporter: we have multiple stab victims inside the school, and outside the school. >> the five minute rampage happened as classes were about to start at franklin regional high east of pittsburgh. witnesses say the violence began in the school science wing. he had a kitchen style knife in each hand. both as long as 10 inches. >> my one friend got cut across the face. we don't know how she's doing. >> there's just blood everywhere. i just ran, i didn't know what else to do. >> reporter: tackled the sophomore with the help from this senior. >> mr. king immobilized him. pinned him down. i jumped on top of him as well, and tried to keep the knives stationary. >> friends and parents reacting. >> she just said they got stabbed and to come get them now. >> reporter: victims rushed to four nearby hospitals.

some with serious deep wounds. >> it was all between the waist and the shoulders, and these were large holes. seemingly from a large weapon. >> reporter: investigators are looking at the suspect's computer, and anyone he may have had contact with over the last few days. he faces adult charges on multiple counts of aggravated assault, and attempted murder. ktvu, channel 2 news. >> one injured student is being called a hero tonight. he posted this selfie of himself in the hospital, pointing to his injured arm. one girl said that he put his hand up, and saved her friend from being stabbed. another credited him for pulling the fire alarm that sent students rushing out of the school. president obama offered his thoughts and prayers after the stabbings. he was briefed on the attack as he made his way to fort hood texas for a memorial service for the soldiers killed in a

mass shooting there last week. [ sound of gunfire ] >> president obama made some emotional remarks during today's ceremony. he and the first lady also met with relatives of the victims. army private, ivan lopez killed three soldiers and wounded 16 others last wednesday before taking his own life. the president made the same grim trip back in 2009 after army major nadal hassan killed 13 people in another shooting rampage on the base. a recent terrorist threat is causing some concern here in the pay area. east bay congressman eric swalwell showed al-qaeda's magazine inspire. it shows a picture of someone sitting on the tram. it has a message, encouraging terrorists to pack their tools of destruction and assemble their bomb for detonation. it's a clear threat to transportation systems such as b.a.r.t.

and the tram at sfo. news chopper 2 flew over the multimillion dollar home on sky road late this afternoon. we have learned that the owner and three others have appeared in court. they are charged with wire and bank fraud, and money laundering. ktvu has also been told madjilessi was charged with insurance fraud two years ago. the santa clara county moved forward with charges against chris cullivar. the felony charge was related to brass knuckles that authorities say they found in his car after that crash. a witness who followed cullivar claims cullivar confronted him. a reputed oakland gang member is scheduled to be sentenced tomorrow for a shooting that killed innocent people inside a nightclub. lamar fox was one of two men

convicted on two counts of first degree murder, and five counts of attempted murder. the prosecutor says fox and clem thompkins opened fire three years ago at sweet jimmy's. they were targeting rival gang members, but missed. none of the seven victims was in a gang. thompkins was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole last month. fox is facing a life sentence. both of the people killed in that shooting were young fathers. new at 10:00, amber lee is here with the heartbreaking storey of the dreams that were destroyed that night, and the little girl who misses her dad. >> frank, the sentencing hearing is scheduled to take place here tomorrow morning. tonight, i spoke with a family of one victim who tells us their lives have been shattered by the shooting. billy jenkins tells me when she runs track, she thinks of her

father. >> i think of him a lot. and i can't stop thinking about him. >> reporter: a daddy who the 5- year-old was named after, a daddy she resembles. she says the loss of her daughter's father is immeasurable. >> he will never be able to walk her down the aisle when she's getting married. he will never be able to see her out on the track running. >> reporter: 26-year-old billy jenkins was shot and killed on april 5, 2011. >> like it was yesterday. i definitely remember it. >> reporter: police say jenkins was among the two killed and five injured when a gang member filed into the club. the victims were innocent bistanders. >> just overnight going and becoming a single mother. that has been the biggest challenge. >> reporter: parks tells me she

new mexico. the helicopter crashed near its landing pad. witnesses say after the helicopter took off, they saw it wobble and then go down. no patients were onboard, but three crew members were. fortunately, their injuries are not believed to be serious. patients on two floors of the new mexico university hospital had to be evacuated. tonight that hospital is closed to new patients except for serious traumas. here in the bay area, two fire trucks collided today as they were racing to a call in daly city. two firefighters were seriously injured, and had to be taken to the hospital. both of them are familiar faces in the neighborhood. >> reporter: neighbors in daly city say the crash sounded almost like an explosion. >> a big boom, like thunder. >> i was so shaken. >> reporter: en route to a call on a kitchen fire, engine truck 92 and ladder truck 95 collided at 9:18 this morning.

two firefighters were injured, taken to san francisco general hospital in serious condition. >> a lot of blood in the face, and right here. two men with a lot of blood. >> reporter: a parked car was also smashed up. a witness tells us, the man sitting in it was shaken, but not injured. another witness says a paramedic on the engine truck almost immediately began tending to his colleagues. shopping and sharing time with the residents they serve. >> my heart is broken, because they're mostly my friends. >> hopefully they will recover soon. >> reporter: neighbors say cars often speed into the intersection, after rolling through a two way stop. the police is under investigation from the daly city police department. ktvu, channel 2 news. mission accomplished. members of the 129th rescue wing returned home today after

saving a sick baby and her family who were stranded in the ocean off the coast of mexico. the team began its mission last wednesday. members were called upon to save 1-year-old lyra kaufman who was sick and onboard a sail boat with her mother, father, and older sister. lyra became ill, and the boat loft its steering and communication abilities. that's when the national guard was called. >> we brought home a family. everybody is alive. everybody is healthy. it's a huge save. >> a great mission to be a part of, anytime you can bring somebody home alive, especially americans, it's a good thing. >> the family was dropped off in southern california at 11:00 this morning. everyone, including little lyra is said to be doing well. a 62-year-old woman has tried and failed again to unlawfully board a hawaii bound flight at san francisco airport. authorities say they arrested maryland hartman once again on monday, she has repeatedly

ignored warnings to stay away from the airport unless she has a ticket. hartman claims she has cancer and wants to go some place warm. the video was taken at the giants game yesterday and ktvu's allie rasmus explains how police are defending their actions. >> reporter: inside at&t park yesterday afternoon, a giants fan happened to walk through the concession area and saw this contrace between -- confrontation between a giants fan and the officer. >> he's not fighting back, he's not resisting. >> reporter: he posted the first 16 seconds on his facebook page. in a matter of hours it had been shared more than 500 times. more than 100 people made comments about it, mostly

negative towards police. >> stuff like this happens all too the time. it's just not documented on video. i understand cops have a way of dealing with the situation. it just seemed a little excessive, especially when the kid is in handcuffs already. >> of course to the public it appears this use of force was a little bit excessive to the untrained eye, but in reality, this officer did do what they were supposed to do. >> reporter: the officer engaged in a control hold, and says it's an appropriate tactic under sfpd policy. the video was taken after officers had been called out to remove the fan from the stands. >> when an officer had him in a control hold. >> reporter: the full 30 second video, not posted on facebook, you see the officer and the fan standup and walk away. tony rivera says police are now operating in an age of ubiquitous cameras.

he might kill someone. >> reporter: frank, there was an initial police stop that happened about four miles ago. but that chase ended up right here in this parking lot. you can see the area where the vehicles ended up. vallejo police tell me they fired on that suspect because they say he posed a very real threat to a family waiting right here at this taco bell drive through. police say the chase ended here with one vallejo police officer firing on the suspect from inside his own police cruiser, and another police officer firing from outside. police say the suspect was killed, following a dangerous chase. >> excess of 90 miles per hour, driving along the shoulder, cutting vehicles off. driving through a heavily populated shopping center. >> reporter: it started with officers trying to pull over the suv a mile away. officers say the suspect

refused to stop, and took off. vallejo police caught up with the suspect near interstate 80 in tennessee. they say he sped into this crowded shopping center. watched from a nearby hair salon. >> he tried to go outside by the police vehicle. and then hit car. >> reporter: police say the suspect rammed a police cruiser over and over again. the vehicle got stuck. officers say the suspect revved the engine, trying to free himself. officers say his vehicle was pointed directly at a family in this cadillac. officers say if he freed the suv, he would have barreled right into them. >> that vehicle would have come straight for him. who knows what could have happened. the officers did not take immediate action. >> reporter: police tell me that the suspect did not have any identify on him. they don't know who he was.

the officers that fired into that suv and killed the suspect are on paid leave, which is standard while the shooting is investigated. two san franciscans were honored as heros today for offering to save lives, even though they're just 10 years old. >> she can't breathe, and i don't know [ inaudible ] can i get an ambulance please? >> they received medals of honor at san francisco city hall along with the 911 dispatchers who helped them. katrina's mother was having a serious asthma attack. >> i called 911 and i was telling them what happened. they were asking me all questions where i lived and everything. i told them. he said no, don't call 911. i knew how expensive it was, but i didn't care, because i

we want to update you now on breaking news. lane closures in both directions slowed traffic. traffic is improving through the narrowed sections of the bridge. i want to show you a live picture now from the bay bridge toll plaza. you can see westbound traffic is moving fine. the metering lights are off. caltrans expects to have the repairs done by midnight. if we get any updates we will let you know. new at 10:00, hundreds walked to end a string of assaults. three recent alleged sexual attacks on elementary school children. neighbors say there has been other violent crime in the area as well. ktvu's jana katsuyama is live in oakland tonight. she talked with some of the concerned neighbors about the bigger problem of violent crime in an area where there are so many children. >> reporter: frank, certainly, neighbors tonight were telling me they have many concerns about those other crimes in the area. oakland police say they have not gotten any arrests in that

one assault near bella vista. they came tonight to reach out. about 200 children, parents, teachers, neighbors, and police in east oakland. >> this is what we do. >> reporter: a community searching for unity with group hugs, and building a fabric of friendship to fight crime. the groups sat outside bella vista elementary, where last month, a 6-year-old student reporting about sexually assaulted across the street by a stranger. >> it happened where my kids wait for me after school, it's really scary. >> reporter: tonight's walk for peace was not about fear. it was about taking small steps to solve a bigger problem of crime, and violence. neighbors say they hear gunfire about twice a week. this father with his baby said outside his home last month, a young man was shot and killed. >> there's been a vigil outside her house for jacob, pretty

firefighters remained at the scene for several hours, putting out hot spots and making sure the fire didn't spread to nearby homes. no injuries were reported. the cause of the fire is still under investigation tonight. police in rich homicide are search -- richmond are searching for a person who shot and killed a boy last night. police have obtained an arrest warrant for melinda gaffney. investigators say gaffney and forks knew each other and had gotten into an argument early in the evening. >> there is a history of animositiy we're investigating. we have a lot of unanswered questions still, and she has the answers. >> a $10,000 reward is offered for information leading to gaffney's arrest. information on a homicide in antioch. police have identified the victim as 36-year-old rashad thomas. he was found shot outside a

>> reporter: other districts like san leandro have done the same drill. preparing for the worst case scenario. >> ever since sandy hook they have one of these in the classroom, telling them what to do in situations from fire to active shooter, and if they need help they can stick this in the window. >> we're ready. >> reporter: because everybody knows your name. >> make sure your students wear their badges at all times. a state bill to but a warning label on sugary drinks cleared a huge bill today. it requires a warning saying sugary beverages lead to obesity, diabetes, and tooth decay. it passed a vote by 5-2. some california college students could get help from the state in a bill considered in the state senate.

cooler out there, because of a stronger onshow flow and it's going to stay on the cool side as this weather system is spinning out here. that's a weak system. it's not going to bring rain, but as it moves to the coast, it's going to release that inversion, and allow more clouds to push inland, and slightly cooler. you're going to see that demonstrated in the five day. the fog along the coast. that fog is going to be around tomorrow morning when you wake up, it will be in some of the inland bay valleys. we've got good winds blowing, oakland, 10 miles an hour. transporting all of that cool moist air inland. you wake up, you're in the mid- and upper 40s, you go through the microclimates tomorrow. at the coast in the 50s. this is a summer like pattern. it warms up a little bit. you're going to see temperatures starting to climb, not to the 90s, but back into the mid-70s, upper 70s, and

start tweaking on the low 80s toward brentwood. instead of those very warm upper 80s, that we saw just a couple of days ago, we're looking at mid-70s, upper 70s tomorrow. so thursday, just like today. friday, slightly cooler as this system comes to the coast, and sets the stage for the weekend with a few more clouds. a little more coastal fog, maybe a little bit of drizzle somewhere. 80 in vacaville tomorrow. still warm. 81 in the brentwood area. these temperatures about where they were today. and a little cooler on friday. so just going to be a nice pattern. the big changes, that big amount of fog. that's going to be there nights and mornings, really right through this five-day forecast as we start to look a heck of a lot like late spring, early summer with this type of pattern. there's your temperatures, trending slightly down, but it's just a really mild kind of
