. kutv channel 2 news starts right now with breaking news. that breaking news is in berkeley with a massive fire has heavily damage a familiar furniture store and cause a huge traffic jam along the very busy interstate 80. >> good evening, i'm ken wayne. >> i'm heather holme for more than two hours we have watched as crews have battled the flames in berkeley. the fire engulfing a building at around 8:00 tonight and as a few minutes ago, this fire was still burning right in the middle of that building and crews were heard calling for

back-up after the roof collapsed. all of this happening just off interstate 80 in berkeley. >> that fire is right on 1823 east shore highway, the frontage road that runs along side interstate 80 near the university avenue exit and also the home of the wooden duck a custom furniture maker and several other businesses in aarea, you have probably seen the wooden duck as you drive by on interstate 80 in berkeley near the university avenue exit. >> let's turn to mark tamayo monitoring the conditions facing the fire crew. >> before we get to mark we want to hear from a business owner once the flames erupted. >> oh, my god, this is so crazy, because it's going to take -- i can't imagine what it's going to take to put all of these businesses back together. >> reporter: how many businesses-joshua tree

and thriving lifestyles, they are go. wooden duck a big business, they are bon. >> reporter: what would make it burn so big, so fast? just the fuels in these buildings? >> furniture-making and woodworking are notoriously subjective to fire damage. >> reporter: that was the business owner talking about the wooden duck furniture store which apparently has been destroyed in the fire and talking about all the materials that would be very nammable and flammable and you have a very dangerous situation with fire. >> we were watching all evening tonight as it seemed as firefighter were getting a handle on this fire and then suddenly, it would just ignite and sort of boom. let's check many with meteorologist mark tamayo, with the wind, the embers just flying in the air there, how the wind contributed to this firefight. >> that is right heather, the

wind around 15-20 miles per hour, watching the live pictures coming in during the 8:00hir and the embers moving around and that was the primary concern. wind still a factor right now. starting at camera at 8:40 and the fire very active at 8:40 and later in the 9:00 hour. that wind moving from west to east and so is the smoke plume, and so the smoke tracking to the east and the wind also disperses some of that smoke, so that is the one good quality of the wind, but that salsa a concern with the fire crews. here is a closer inspection of the mapping system with the fire for reference, towards university avenue, just to the north of university avenue for this part of the region. and as far as the wind, as i mentioned they are moving from west to east, so that the smoke plume over the berkeley hills this evening. the latest wind speeds around this region you can see oakland

airport winds out the west at 14 miles per hour. i saw some berkeley winds around 10-15 miles per hour. strongest wind out towards fairfield with a wind gust up to 35 miles per hour. so you get an idea we have a moderate to strong wind across the bay area. so humidity levels the moisture levels have been up all evening long. we'll continue to keep an eye on the wind speeds and fog will be a big factor in forecast coming up at 10:35. >> thank you very much, mark. we have team coverage on this breaking news. >> ktvu's debora villalon is live at the scene with the latest of what is going on with the firefight. >> reporter: the fire has been burning for at least two hours and i can tell you in the last few minutes that the flame and smoke have finally laid down. you can see the ladders and the firefighters up top. they have the aerial hoses and putting a lot of water on this

property. still spraying, but we're seeing a noticeable difference in the amount of smoke. the fire and smoke visible for miles, as we are right alongside interstate 80. what has burned down is a well- known furniture store scald the wooden duck, plus an adjoining tile business and joshua tree and a production company. they are all on this the same subdivided property. and you heard earlier from bill, who is here at the scene, he owns that property, and is of course very familiar with it and familiar with everything that is inside. and he told me just a few minutes ago, he puts this loss at between $6 million and $8 million conservatively. because of the contents and all of the equipment. the wooden duck is well-known of course for it's recycled and reclaimed furniture. and the solvents that would be

in there for refinishing furniture might have added to the combustible materials that caused this fire go up so fast. we're still waiting for a briefing from berkeley fire and they have been way too busy, literally on the run, laying hoses, dealing with downed power lines. so we expect to bet an update from them, but it certainly looks like they have a turned a corner and gotten on top of this fire now. reporting live in berkeley, debora villalon ktvu channel 2 news. thank you debora. that is certainly good news. those driving along interstate 80 could not miss the flames and smoke and patti lee continues with the traffic troubles near the fire scene. >> reporter: we're live on the university overpass where you can see a virtual sea of lights, the white headlights of thousands of cars traveling on 80 west. once they cross under the overpass you can see it's just a sea of red taillights a

virtual parking lot and to the right, thousands of flashing red emergency vehicle lights. that is where the fire is and when you think about how long this back-up has been plaguing this stretch of 80, you realize just how big, just how raging that fire is to be able to cause a back-up for this long. we have the only people who are really moving are people on foot, which you can see here, folks who decided to get up and walk and folks who were forewarned and got off to use the overpass. so we will be here all night and give you updates. we're hoping to catch up with debora in a little bit, monitoring the fire, patti lee, ktvu channel 2 news. >> and our coverage of the berkeley fire will continue throughout this newscast. if we get any additional updates on the firefight as

well as any traffic troubles we'll be sure to bring them to you on twitter, facebook and throughout this newscast. other new developments in the deadly bus crash that killed ten people in glenn county and appears that the driver fedex didn't hit the brakes and the ntsb says tire marks show how the bus driver tried to avoid the collision with the big rig, but there were no brake marks from the fedex truck either on the median or lanes of i-5 where that fiery accident took place. both drivers were killed thursday. authorities say their blood will be tested for any evidence of drugs or alcohol. the bus' black box electronic control module was recovered. the one for the fedex truck was too badly burned. >> our investigators plan to

remove the transmission and tell the gear that the truck tractor was in to give us a speed range that occurred prior to the crash. five of the victims on bus were high school students, three were adult chaperones and appears some of those eld were ejected from the bus. . >> a couple whose rental king 5 was clipped by the fedex big rig told investigators that they saw flames coming from the cab of that truck before the accident. listen now as they describe their terrifying close call. >> i looked over and saw the fedex truck coming straight for me. >> it was like a 3-d movie, a mack truck. >> bonnie duran says she swerved just many time, sending their rented nissan into the ditch. one student on the bus also reported seeing flames coming from the fedex truck ahead of the crash. coming up in just a few minutes we'll have more details on the

crash investigation. there were major traffic delays this afternoon on the richmond-san rafael bridge after a small truck caught fire in the eastbound direction. a viewer shot the video of crews respond to the fire. the highway patrol reported the fire this afternoon. one lane was shut down causing heavy traffic back-up in the eastbound direction. that lane re-opened offer about an hour. an oakland police officer was hospitalized this afternoon after being injured in a car crash. police say the officer was on- duty driving near san pablo avenue and tomas l. berkeley way when a car struck his patrol car. the other driver was mothurt and we're told is cooperating with police. new developments the discovery of a body ends the search for a bay area woman last seen going for a hike on mount tamalpais is that of the

hiker they have been searching for two weeks. 32-year-old magdalena glinkowski went for a hike and never returned. as katie utehs reports. >> reporter: acting on a tip, searchers combed mount tamalpais. the familiful 33-year-old magdalena glinkowski waited for positive identification. >> there are similarities in the clothing. >> reporter: surveillance pictures from the parking lot put glinkowski in the area on march 30l and those images jogged the memory of a trail runner who called the marin county sheriff's office. >> he was actually able to pinpoint where was that he had seen her. >> reporter: k-9 crews located the body in a

steep wooded drainage area on the southeast slopes of mount tam. within a mile of when glinkowski's car was parked. early indications there is no foul play involved. >> there doesn't appear to be any signs of trauma and may truly be an accident. >> reporter: by early evening fingerprints positively identified the body of glinkowski, a small bit of closure for the parents who earlier held out hope she would be found alive. >> she would fight, so we were really helpful. >> reporting from mount tamalpais, katie utehs ktvu channel 2 news. more on that deadly crash involving the bus of students where we're learning new details about what happened. tried to rob me on the

traffic on interstate 80 near the university avenue exit as traffic slowed down to take a look at this massive fire; that is still burning although the flames have diminished considerably owner told us a short time ago he believes $6-8 million of damage was caused at this business the wooden duck furniture store that you have probably seens you have drin by the university exit in berkeley. we're continuing to monitor this fire and have another live update at 10:30. new at 10:00, people in los altos finally have running water, but they are warned not to drink out of the taps for at least a few more days. a boil advisory is in effect, ktvu's patti lee tells us that a water-main break is leading to the water worries. >> reporter: by 5:00 tonight, stephany had running water for the first time in 12 hours, a relief to the mom of three. >> given how much water we need, to run the house, and

feed the kids and cook and clean and all that. >> reporter: the good news came with a warning. >> we recommend using the tap water you go ahead and boil the water until further notice. >> reporter: michael smith explains the boil advisory does not apply to baths and showers, but for cook and drinking tap water must be boileds a precaution. home filtering systems aren't enough. >> we have been drinking a lot of water today, so i hope that is okay. >> reporter: we wereworth with calwater crews who took a sapple to be analyzed and even if it comes back clean another sample will be retested to be sure. >> it will be probably tuesday when we'll notify our customers that the boil order is lifted. >> reporter: smith says the problem started friday night when a water main burst at mine lane and turwood, waters gushed under the road, lifting asphalt about two inches. >> this is the result of an

old pipe that basically gave out. >> reporter: apestimateed 200 families on 19 streets in and around los altos are on two day of dealing with the inconvenience. >> we haven't had that many problems with leaks on this area of our distribution system. >> reporter: that was our patti lee reporting. the san francisco fire department conduct and emergency response drill today to help train volunteers. >> the neighborhood emergency response team, or nert, practiced using equipment, rescuing victims and setting up command center and tried out twitter as as a back- up for cell phones they say this team is establish. >> we live in an area that nobody can staff for disaster level and so volunteers play a key role and a lot of people call them the first true responders and we provide the

training to mick them really ready. >> the nert program began after the loma prieta earthquake to help deal with disasters. police advised against it, but an oakland man says he took the law in his owned hands and made a citizen arrest downtown. >> maybe i'm a little overconfident because aim eye martial artist and i knew he didn't have a gun. he was smaller than i was and no weapon and try odd rob me on wrong day and pissed me off and i arrested him. >> bart conley says a young man tried to panhandle him and conley is he when he asked to be left alone, the man threatened to arm him. conley let the young man go, but he kept following him while he was calling police. >> he tried to run and i put him on his continues and and said wait here until the cops get here. >> police did arrive and took

. continuing coverage on that fiery crash on interstate 5 in glenn county. federalvores today found the black box from the tour bus. >> the ntsb also revealed some new information about what happened the moments before that bus and fedex big rig collided. gigi graciette is live to tell us what officials have determined so far. >> well, the investigation continues, good evening, we're in orlean, california and you can see a memorial here has been set up for one of the victim , ismael jimenez, this is the ntsb says they have

critical new information. >> ntsb investigators spent the day looking at this, the burned and mangled metal that only a few days ago was a brand- new tour bus and is left of the fedex truck that hit it, searching for clues for what caused the crash that killed ten people, while 15 miles away in orlean another teen made a finding that the ntsb calls critical. >> there is no indication of fire marks, from braking, in the median in the median or in the northbound lanes. there are no tire marks anywhere. >> reporter: not a single skid mark from the fedex truck on the 5 free, but says the ntsb, they did find a 145' of skid marks from the school tour bus, which clearly show that the bus driver was trying to get out of the trucks a path. >> this is critical information. >> reporter: important piece of information coming from a key witness, the woman driving in front of the bus whose car was also hit by the fedex truck. >> the driver reported seeing

flames from underneath the cab, as the truck tractor was coming across the median. so that just means that they saw flames coming prior to the crash. >> reporter: it is too soon to tell, but if the truck was really burning before the accident, it could explain why the driver lost control. meanwhile toxicology testing is being done on blood samples from both drivers and in a few days the investigation's focus will turn to los angeles. >> they are arranging a visit to the los angeles terminal, where the motorcoach trip originated. we want to interview people to understand how arrangements were made and the contract with the motorcoach company to understand the specific parameters of the trip. >> reporter: and back here live in orlean, you can see some paintbrushes , ishmael jimenezs why a budding young artist with dreams and hopes at humboldt university and you can see neighbors who

it did have multiple occupancies and the problems that we had with the water problems in area, there are not a whole lot of hydrants in the area and with the huge occupancy there. six alarm, three from berkeley and mutual aid from oakland and other cities? we know that the wooden duck furniture store was pretty much destroyed. is that when the fire started? >> at this point we copyright say. we know that the building is well-advertised as the wooden duck and will are multiple occupancies and we within the pinpoint the build of origin, the building of origin was in that building, but the point of origin we don't know at this point. >> reporter: there are four businesses at that footprint? >> we believe there are four, but there could be more or less. >> reporter: why did it burn to fast, so hot? there were flammable/combustible materials inside? >> at this point we don't know. this is a lost wooden materials, but we're not sure

what started fire and that is will be left up to the investigatorsed at this point. >> reporter: no one injures? >> we have no one injures and no injuries to firefighters. >> this business would have been closed at 8:00 and i was wondering how the call came in? was it a bystander? >> at this point i dote have any information. once we get more information we'll certainly get that to you. >> reporter: and you will be out here all night? >> we will be here all night. there is a significant amount of fire as we mop up, other fires pop up in the hidden area we're calling it "contained," contained building of origin. >> reporter: did you make any evacuations at any point? >> i believe the police department did make some evacuations from the immediate area, but like you said it was late in the evening and there wasn't a lot of occupancies as far as actual residents or citizens in the area. so that was minimal at this point.

the curb, took out two stone pillars and crashed this morning. accident took out a gas meter, which prompted santa clara police to evacuate at least at a homes in the area as a precaution. one neighbor says she is not surprised by this accident. >> people drive too fast here. >> well, nobody in those houses were hurt and we're today that the female driver walked away with a bruises collarbone. an antioch jewelry store re- opened after one day after after a robby left a suspected robber dead. they walked into the jewelers yesterday afternoon and one of them shot and wounded a customer. police say one of the storeowners then shot and killed one of the robbers. today a woman who wakes across the street delivered flowers to show her support. >> of all the people, these

. returning now to that breaking news in berkeley where a six-alarm fire damage a building that housed alive four businesses including wooden duck business store off the university avenue exit. crews attack the fire and knocked down the flames pretty fast and right now you can see that is mostly smoke coming from that. water is still being poured on the scene and you can see interstate 80, traffic was crawling since 8:00, but it has

largely returned to normal. pge reports 700 customers in the area lost power. the good news firefighters tell us no one was injured. the bad news is that the property owner says $6-$8 million of property contents were lost in the fire. firefighters say they will be out there all night long to keep an eye to make sure nothing flared up. >> let's check in with meteorologist mark tamayo. >> that typical breeze we get winds around 10-20 miles per hour. still a bit of a breeze out there right now, so thankfully fire crews being a better handle on the situation the past hour or. so the wind transporting fog back into the bay. a lot of moist with the fog back in the pacific, moving from the west to southwest and this continues to approach the bay area over the next 4-8 hours. in fact, closer inspection of fog already working its way back into the bay, parts of the

north bay for marin county and latest wind observations strongest wind towards fairfield. wind gust out of the southwest at 35 miles per hour. some more parts of oakland airport, 14 miles per hour and a few more stations for sfo not as strong here and basically a calm wind towards mount view and san josi at last check. for tonight fog will continue to be on increase and tomorrow morning fog, warmer out there and the extended a sun-cloud mix, but a dry weather pattern. areas of fog widespread first thing tomorrow morning, temperatures to start our sunday in the 40s to lower 50s. off to a cool start tomorrow morning. high pressure trying to rebuild offshore. it will continue to strengthen a little bit for sunday as a result tomorrow will be warmer than today. mid to upper 70s, 60 asthe beaches and so most areas tomorrow up a good 4-6 degrees
