the virus. president obama says zika poses a threat to americans. he urged congress to pass the fund to fight the virus that he asked for six months ago. well, zika has been among the worries in the lead-up to the olympics but the games will start tonight with an upbeat ceremony spotlighting all things brazilian. jamie yuccas is watching the preparations in rio. good morning, jamie. >> reporter: good morning, meg. we are right outside the olympic park where millions will tune in tonight for the opening ceremony from around the world and people will be watching. and leading up to today, you heard a lot about the concerns like you just talked about, the zika virus and shoddy construction and dirty water, but now brazil is hoping to refocus attention back to its fun loving culture. along the copacabana beach, american tourists are snapping pictures and making memories ahead of the olympic games. >> i'm really excited to see everyone with that energy because i've never seen it before, only on television. >> reporter: armed police officers watched the crowd very closely. >> my antenna is up, it's up, but it's nice to see the presence here. i mean, it's what i would expect

be. >> reporter: military ships can also be spotted right off the coast. the well-maintained landscaping and beautiful painted buildings is what the tourists will he see here built specifically for the olympics. but as you can see behind me, this is what people think of when they think of rio, construction and worn-down buildings. finishing touches are being done on a new subway line expected to officially open today and it was supposed to be finished months ago. as for team usa, most members are here and ready to go. including the most decorated olympian ever. swimmer michael phelps with 22 medals. he will carry the stars and stripes at tonight's opening ceremony. >> just the honor and the opportunity to do that, it's incredible. >> reporter: phelps is looking to add to his collection of gold and so will all of the other american athletes. while thousands of fans from around the world get a taste of the olympics in south america

to protest the arrest of demonstrators there. the protest last month followed the killing of a black man by a white officer. the "new york post" reports a roundup of suspected mobsters from four of the city's five crime families. federal authorities made 46 arrests on a variety of charges, including loan sharking. police say some of the suspects have colorful nicknames like tug boat, fish, and nicki the wig. the s&p 500 finished higher less than a point and the nasdaq rose six points. facebook is working to cut down the number of click bait posts on its newsfeed. click bait is an effort to grab more readers. they push down news items. facebook plans to limit the reach of the post and the publisher who posted it. a pair of hackers who last year showed they were able to kill the nation's capital -- kill the engine of a jeep cherokee are now able to take control of the vehicle. last year's news prompted a recall of nearly 1.5 million jeep cherokees. now the hackers say they can make the vehicle slam on its brakes, speed up, or turn at any speed. chrysler fiat which manufactures jeeps said the hack wouldn't have been possible on its updated software. apple is starting a bug bounty program. the program offers rewards for

mosquito killing chemicals are being sprayed, while scientists race to find a zika vaccine. but health officials say it's foolish not to use the last line of defense against the virus. kenneth craig checks on the most effective insect repellants. >> reporter: for this woman and her growing family, fear of the zika virus has turned bug spray into a must. but not every repellant is equally effective against the mosquito consumer reports recently put them to the test. they recommend product with one of three active ingredients. deet at a concern trags of 15 to 30 and care a din of 20% and lemon at a concentration of 30%. make sure to cover all bare skin. >> for example, if you're spraying your arm, you want to make sure you turn your arm and do the underside. >> reporter: experts say your

the government estimates more than 47,000 veterans are homeless. more than 13,000 live on the streets. mark strassmann tells us how facebook helped one of them reunite with his family after decades. >> reporter: in 1984, herman leon, a 21-year-old army vet, disappeared. marta sallie, his younger sister. >> he decided to go to atlanta to work. >> reporter: when did you get worried? >> i got worried after i never saw him after a year, then two years, and then when it got to five years, i'm like, huh-uh, something is wrong. >> reporter: leon bounced around atlanta's shadows and had a

rooming houses and the army vet kept radio silence with his family. >> he was like a gentle giant. >> reporter: patrice green, a social worker with a veterans administration, met leon at a homeless shelter last april. like so many veterans, leon had untreated mental health issues. >> so i asked, where is your family? and he said, i don't know. >> reporter: green searched online, including a facebook message to four possible family members. >> and the very next day, i get a call from the sister and she is like, is this a j was probably another hoax. >> reporter: and when were you convinced? >> when i heard his voice and -- and i knew it was real. >> reporter: this army family's reunion was 32 years in the making. >> i hugged him and i told him that, you know, we -- i never gave up on him. >> i was shocked. i was crying. >> reporter: she says it's a miracle.
