the goal for the best performance after winning goes to -- >> that's joy there. >> welcome to "cbs this morning." norah o'donnell is off. dana jacobson is with us. we begin with breaking news in an apartment complex in maryland. the fire lit up the night sky in silver springs. >> nearly three dozen people, including three firefighters taken to the hospital. several people remain chip, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, smoke is still rising from that apartment complex behind me. they're still searching for survivors, between five and seven people are still unaccounted for. it began just before midnight, with a massive explosion. one building, was completely leveled. >> the blast was so strong, firefighters nearly a mile away, say they heard the explosion. >> it looks like two buildings on fire.

>> reporter: when rescuers arrived at the apartments in silver spring, maryland, it looked like an intern know. >> trapped on second and third floor. emergency crews put up ladders, taking over the work neighbors had started. >> multiple rescues had been made by the sieve civilians. >> reporter: about 160 firefighters worked at it, cell phone video and joi giant flames turning their homes into rubble. >> we heard a big boom, like a big, loud noise, and my aunt went outside and checked. and then she saw like a lot of fire outside. >> reporter: officials say 34 people were transported to local hospitals. >> the injuries range from abrasions to orthopedic injuries, broken bones from the exiting the structures, three

burns and smoke inhalation type injuries. >> reporter: three firefighters were among those admitted. all had nonlife threatening injuries. investigators are trying to determine what caused the damage. >> still to early to identify the sequence of explosion and then fire, or something prior to the explosion. that will be determined later on in the day or beyond. >> reporter: fire officials say there are gas furnaces in those buildings, and they are certainly looking into whether the fire was started by natural gas. if it was, then the national transportation safety board plans to send an entire investigative team, because gas and pipeline fires are within their jurisdiction. >> thank you, chip. donald trump has launched a new line of attacks, trying to link the obama administration to the founding of isis. the republican nominee also slammed hillary clinton for the newest batch of her state department e-mails. andy highlighted a controversial
