the goal for the best performance after winning goes to -- >> that's joy there. >> welcome to "cbs this morning." norah o'donnell is off. dana jacobson is with us. we begin with breaking news in an apartment complex in maryland. the fire lit up the night sky in silver springs. >> nearly three dozen people, including three firefighters taken to the hospital. several people remain chip, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, smoke is still rising from that apartment complex behind me. they're still searching for survivors, between five and seven people are still unaccounted for. it began just before midnight, with a massive explosion. one building, was completely leveled. >> the blast was so strong, firefighters nearly a mile away, say they heard the explosion. >> it looks like two buildings on fire.

>> reporter: when rescuers arrived at the apartments in silver spring, maryland, it looked like an intern know. >> trapped on second and third floor. emergency crews put up ladders, taking over the work neighbors had started. >> multiple rescues had been made by the sieve civilians. >> reporter: about 160 firefighters worked at it, cell phone video and joi giant flames turning their homes into rubble. >> we heard a big boom, like a big, loud noise, and my aunt went outside and checked. and then she saw like a lot of fire outside. >> reporter: officials say 34 people were transported to local hospitals. >> the injuries range from abrasions to orthopedic injuries, broken bones from the exiting the structures, three

burns and smoke inhalation type injuries. >> reporter: three firefighters were among those admitted. all had nonlife threatening injuries. investigators are trying to determine what caused the damage. >> still to early to identify the sequence of explosion and then fire, or something prior to the explosion. that will be determined later on in the day or beyond. >> reporter: fire officials say there are gas furnaces in those buildings, and they are certainly looking into whether the fire was started by natural gas. if it was, then the national transportation safety board plans to send an entire investigative team, because gas and pipeline fires are within their jurisdiction. >> thank you, chip. donald trump has launched a new line of attacks, trying to link the obama administration to the founding of isis. the republican nominee also slammed hillary clinton for the newest batch of her state department e-mails. andy highlighted a controversial

sat behind clinton at a rally in florida. >> how many of you people know me? a lot of you people know me, right? >> reporter: but trump had an unexpected supporter of his own, disgraced congressman mark foley. >> he knew. they knew. but how would you -- how did you like that picture? >> reporter: foley resigned from congress in 2006, after admitting he sent sexually explicit e-mails and text time or had been house pages. that scandal, contributed to house republicans losing their majority in that campaign. this campaign year, foley has appeared here in florida and spoken favorably of the billionaire real estate developer turned politician. charlie. >> major, thanks. hillary clinton goes to a michigan factory to spell out her economic agenda. the newest polls from wisconsin shows clinton with a ten-point lead.

trump wants to help the wealthy by eliminating the estate tax while easing up on the financial industry. >> i am going to cut regulation massively. >> he wants to roll back regulations on wall street. i want to tighten them. >> reporter: there is one thing they do agree on. >> we have to rebuild the infra stir ture. >> we're going to invest in infrastructure, our airports, roads, tunnels. >> reporter: the difference, clinton says, she has a plan to pay for it. in iowa, she argued her more detailed plans are one reason some republican officials have endorsed her. >> i am humbled and moved by the republicans who are willing to stand up and say that donald trump doesn't represent their values. >> reporter: one of those republicans is chris shays, who was a congressman from connecticut for over 21 years, and went public with his support

governor or democratic president. but donald trump lost me a long time ago. history is not going to be kind to donald trump. and it is not going to be kind to people who supported him. >> reporter: trump says that slashing taxes and regulations will unleash the economy, while clinton will say today that you can't pay for things like new roads and bridges, unless you tax the wealthy more. she'll also argue that flint's water system here in is a perfect example, gayle, of what can happen when government oversight is relaxed. >> thank you, nancy. a virginia man who climbed trump tower said he had a ams sage to deliver. the new york police department yanked the man off the side of the building yesterday. he spent nearly three hours using suction cups to climb to the 21st floor. tony dokoupil is outside trump's tower. good morning, tony.

to issue a comment. >> a sad story. risk of debris that flies off over vehicles on the road and hundreds of thousands of dangerous and sometimes deadly accidents. kris van cleave is in washington with how researchers believe many tragedies could be prevent. >> reporter: good morning. those researchers found that the bulk of these accidents have to do with things coming off one vehicle and flying into the road, particularly on freeway. that could be avoided by overloading a vehicle and strapping things down and using ropes and straps to secure the cargo in a vehicle. driver, beware. dangerous debris in the road, or from an unsecured load falling off other vehicles. >> there it goes! >> reporter: has been blamed for more than 200,000 crashes on u.s. roads between 2011 and 2014. a aaa foundation study found 39,000 injuries and more than

a neat personality. >> reporter: for tyler turner, last saturday was supposed to be a fun outing with friend, just weeks before the honor student was set to head off to college. his mother francine snapped this photo of him kneeling at the tarmac at the parachute center in california. >> he gave me a hug and said i love you, mom. i said, i love you, son. he got on the plane. >> reporter: were those the last words? >> yes. >> reporter: at first, she thought her son had bd of the jump until she spotted emergency vehicles in an open field. >> the officer had come up and ed that the two people on the ground are deceased and i lost it. i just remember screaming and screaming. and thinking it can't be true. >> reporter: it's believed tyler and his instructor died after their shared parachute didn't open. the united states parachute association says more than 3 million people sky dive in the u.s. every year.

parachute center bill dass declined our repeated request for comment but spoke on the crash. >> it's an unfortunate situation but if you see a car wreck, they don't close the freeway. it's something that, unfortunately, in this sport, and scuba diving, there are facilitates. >> reporter: investigators are looking from the parachute to the instructor's qualifications. villarreal in lodie, california. >> it seems they need better regulations. >> i was able to sky dive and do it with the army golden knights. the one thing they preached to us is the safety factors. if you're ever going again, to make sure it's regulated and they are licensed. i was for which to do it with them. a final face-off between two arch rivals at the rio olympics.
