"politics now". >> thanks for joining us. i'm steve sebelius. patrick is on vacation this week. he started off by going to one of donald trump's mainstays criticizing the media. just about every day the national media latches on to something about my running word that donald trump has said in the last five minutes, they don't have time to talk about what the clintons have done for over 30 years. they were largely ignoring the news, believe it or not, that new e-mails had come to light that seemed to provide direct evidence that favors were done by state department officials

clinton for large foreign donors to the clinton foundation. then we learned another day later that several months ago the fbi discussed opening a public corruption investigation into the clinton foundation and barack obama's justice department apparently shut it down. >> my concern is for the two ranching families, bundys and the hammonds, their constitutional rights have been trampled, i hope and pray when you get into office, you'll look into that. >> pence didn't address the

the constitution. >> gary johnson and his running mate former massachusetts governor bill wells. he said things are looking up for the party. >> what is very significant over the last three weeks, that's a doubling of that number. if you go earlier than that, that's a double of that number three weeks before that. so it really does look good. >> well, speaking of numbers, a new poll from suffolk university is a dead heat. hillary clinton at 44% and donald trump at 42%. the two points separating them are well within the margin of error, a quarter said they were
5:34 pm
they were alarmed and gary johnson came in at 5%. >> the 4th anniversary of the executive orders from president obama. including in their event are calls for reform. >> why they think they can accomplish what other members of congress have been unable to do thus far. >> is there something that, you know, an approach use that maybe hasn't been used so far? >> just what i've done as attorney general. i've built relationships to not just democratic colleagues but republican colleagues. it is how you work together to get things done. it is true when i say i'm a bipartisan problem solver. there's no doubt in my mind, i think there are republicans in congress that i can work with
5:35 pm
reform. it starts with having those conversations. it doesn't start with no. if we're talking about immigration reform, let's put a face on it. those are real people that are contributing to our economy that are a productive part of our community. they contribute to our gdp. there's positives all around. let's talk real world and to me, you got to start somewhere. >> is there in he hope of any kind of reform >> look, i have hope. given that donald trump is on the ballot in november, i wouldn't rule out actually taking congress back. i wouldn't rule out that people like hardy who support him are going to get swept out of office. the american people, nevadans are sick and tired of this politics. they are tired of having a
5:36 pm
history. we need to elect people who are going to work hard and be able to compromise with the other side to come up with solutions. right now cresent hardy is not a solution person. >> what will you do if you were elected to congress, what would you do? would you say, hey, you promised, let's do willing that i get elected into this congressional seat is going to be to the people of the fourth congressional district. they are going to expect that their leader speak out on behalf of the district and i will, if necessary, push the administration to make sure regardless of if it is republican or democrat, to make sure we give comprehensive reform the attention it deserves, the vote it deserves.

good for all america. >> republicans in the house refused to take up a bipartisan senate bill passed in 2013. hillary clinton may have promised to introduce the bill or use executive power more than obama. >> trying to protect -- >> we have both appealed to the president to set this aside. >> her plans to get another national monument in nevada next on politics now.

5:40 pm
before he leaves office in january is at the top of harry reid's list. releasing a report for the second year in a row about the damage being done to the area. and building 5,000 houses atop the hill. >> damage out there, the trails that are being created that shouldn't be there and all of that. some of that stuff would probably still go on though even with a designation, wouldn't you? >> you not only have to designate it, you have to put some resources behind it, so you can put fences, have some surveillance, be able to really protect it.
5:41 pm
cliven bundy's ranch, it has since almost taken on iconic status of a representation of the battles over the federal government versus local control of public land. does that make it harder to get a designation? >> i think it does. we have these kinds of events and we had a town hall meeting that went for three hours to say to the president that lot of support for this. don't let a handful of bad apples keeping you from doing something. 71% think we should protect and that is across party lines. >> those cattle are out there illegal now even without this designation. >> you were very active in the preservation or the attempt to

proposed there for many years, but has not actually happened. now it looks like there's another proposal before the county commission. do you think there's any chance that that will happen and is there anything that can be done to stop that from happening. >> i've been town this road many times. i would like to see it protected. the county may be inclined to improve it. i would like to work together and see if we can't find some land to swap and see if he can't develop somewhere in the valley. >> the last land swaps stopped when they said a lot of this land has been scarred by gypsum mining, would you have to persuade them to come off that position before going forward?
5:43 pm
resurrected. i believe that's a possibility. also at the time mr. rhodes wasn't a willing seller, that was part of the problem. it will take some negotiation, but i think it is worth it. it is not just the hill itself. it is the impact that it has on blue diamond. the light solution would be a terrible thing. done under a willing buyer and seller. land that he might find more easy to develop elsewhere. that raises the value of that property and that gives him more to negotiate with. >> you don't think this is a proposal, he doesn't really want to develop those 5,000 homes up
5:44 pm
that's a difficult place to build houses, you shouldn't be building them there to start with. >> also during that press conference harry reed says he's tried legislation but accused republicans. >> congressman cresent hardy takes heat. the piece of paper his camp that he says backs up his claims. our face-off panel on harry reid

contradicted by governor sandoval. >> the electric car manufacturing facility is being built by a chinese company and hardy said that the air force had questions about whether there could be spying going on. sandoval nobody ever raised questions for him. they wonder whether it was linked to the chinese it raises the prospect of unauthorized monitoring which isn't far from the development site. nevada economic development officials say the department of defense reviewed the project and cleared it. it is time for face-off where we debate from the right and the left. this week they debate harry

the recreational marijuana ballot. >> harry reid has come out -- we'll call it sceptical about the legalization of recreational -- >> he's going to vote no. he's for medical marijuana but not recreational medical marijuana, is he wrong? >> i don't agree with senator read on everything. that's okay. i don't think that's a the correc i think we need to move toward legalization. i believe this is the right thing for our state to do. too many people are ending up in jail and being victims for no reason with this. we need to make this legal. we need to regulate it and tax it. i believe that the marijuana initiative question two on the ballot will pass. do you agree?
5:50 pm
i'm concerned about it for the same reason he is. my biggest problem are the dispensaries. it is between his medicine, you should have been able to get it at walgreens and cvs and all of the other pharmacies. the problem with that is the federal government. just last week the federal government came out and refused to reclassify marijuana. they say be done. you can't have it being done under the classification that currently exists. i would have thought of all presidents. and mr. barack obama, i'm surprised he hasn't reclassified this at least allow more investigation into it and to allow states to use it under medical purposes without the threat of liesing their

delicate question, is this is this a generational thing. it represents the next generation over here. the young people say legalize it, old guys like us, and senator reed, i would include him in that the 60s and for me to say i didn't participate would be stupid. i don't brag about it. we tried it back in the '60s and '70s and i haven't it in many many years, my concern is the aspect of kids using it. kids getting addicted to it at 4th grade level. parents are leaving it around at
5:52 pm
picking it up the next day. if it is legal for parents it must be an age thing. we used to think that about booze when i was a kid. the reason that you can't have it, it is a restricted age thing. obviously booz is okay, otherwise our parents wouldn't be drinking it. i think kids are thinking about pot in colorado and elsewhere. >> look, people are already doing this. if we think that people are-this is not pref lentd communities right now with all different generations. my parents are very supportive of this issue. they are in their '50s, they think this is really cool. but at the same time -- >> really cool? >> yeah. i think it is time to do this for so many reasons. it is not that big of a deal. alcohol is actually far more dangerous and police have said
5:53 pm
far more dangerous in the context of domestic violence all of these different things. when i look at the pitfuls of this. it is already happening. let's legalize it so we don't have black and brown folks, frankly, going to jail for it. >> you can watch the proposal for an etiology test making it a national will win nevada. look for that at las vegas now.com. >> so who is responsible for most of those negative adds burning up your tv screens, i'll tell you next following the

amounts of money as long as it was independence of candidates and campaigns. >> well, this is what to watch, where we tell you what's coming up in the world of politics next week. one issue keeps coming up with the start of school just about a week away, we're still eagerly awaiting a supreme court decision on the education savings accounts program. 8,000 parents have signed up and are in a state of limbo because and of course determined whether it is constitutional. many of them will be left unsure what to do. democratic vice presidential candidate tim kaine is holding a rally at where else a union hall. >> we'll bring you that story next week. >> thanks for watching politics now. we'll see you next week right here on your local election headquarters.
