live...this is 8 news now at four. ((christianne klein)) in just under seven weeks... president- elect donald trump will drop the "elect" part of his title and become president. ((paul joncich)) >> several times, he has outlid takes his seat in the oval office. one of his major campaign promises has been to end illegal immigration. now let's go over to politics now anchor patrick walker who's here to show us how much trump can do on his own regarding immigration policy. ((patrick walker)) >> as it turns out... there is a lot donald trump can do. but to do everything he has promised out on the campaign trail... he'll have to have quite a bit of help. first... let's talk about what trump can do on his own... via executive order.
4:31 pm
has issued... including on immigration. the supreme court temporarily suspended one of the current president's policies of expansion of deferred action for parents of children born in the u-s... and for childhood arivals. but trump can also end an earlier deferred action program for children brought to the u-s that was passed in 2012. as for deporting what he says are 2-3 million criminal aliens living in the u-s. -- that would require some help from congress. they would have to approve funding for things to speed up due process... since the existing courts would take awhile to process a few million extra cases. professor dan lee says all eyes are now on trump... to see how hard he'll push his version of immigration reform.: ((dan lee/unlv political science professor: "i don't think anyone really expects congress, under the new configuration, it's still going to be unified republican control, that they're going to be able to pass comprehensive immigraiton reform, so if congress can't do it, then that gives trump an argument of why he needs to do something."))
