it's thursday, october 15th, 2015. this is the "cbs morning news." travel slows down at some of the nation's busiest airports. computers used to manager terror watch lists go down. no sanctuary. a teenager is beaten to death and his brother badly injured. authorities say the attack was carried out by relatives trying to get them to confess to their sins. a major restaurant group is leaving gratuity off the check. why it will no longer ask signers to leave a tip for the wait staff. and blue jay fans are flipping out as jose bautista's home run sends toronto into the next round of the american league baseball playoffs. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters in new york. thanks for joining us.

green. this morning, the u.s. customs and border protection computer system is up and rug. this, after a router problem shut it down for over an hour last night. the glitch led to long delays for international passengers. problems were reported in new york, boston, los angeles, atlanta, dallas/ft. worth, and other points of entry. don champion is at new york's kennedy airport. don, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, meg. this is the computer system that checks airline passengers against terrorism watch lists. the outage lasted about 90 minutes and created headaches and long delays at several airports. >> i never saw anything like this. >> reporter: the glitch affected thousands of travelers. there were long waits on customs lines for passengers entering the u.s. and for those checking in for international flights. >> the people up there were people that couldn't walk. it was crazy. crazy. people in wheelchair that were, like, crying, waiting there for

>> reporter: during the computer breakdown, the customs and border protection agency said it processed international travelers using alternative procedures and there is, quote, no indication the service disruption was malicious in nature. >> they finally just, you know, let everyone fill out a form and get through. >> reporter: once the issue was resolved, customs lines started to open up. but for the thousands of passengers caught in the computer glitch, it was a long and frustrating delay. now, even after the problem with this, it did take quite a while for all of the impacted passengers to get through, but anyone who travels internationally knows, it doesn't take any computer glitches to cause any backups at customs checkpoints. meg? >> don champion for us at new york's kennedy airport, thank you. later this morning, president obama is expected to explain his decision to slow the withdrawal of u.s. troops from afghanistan. there are currently 10,000 u.s. troops there.

about 6,000 american troops will remain in afghanistan after 2016. that is a dramatic increase from the thousands embassy-based soldiers that the president originally planned to keep there by the end of next year. this comes on the increase of taliban action last month who seized the northern city of kunduz. government troops recaptured the city but they warn that a stronger u.s. presence is needed to combat the militants. the arab league is calling for an emergency meeting of the u.n. security council to discuss the escalating violence in israeli. at least eight israelis have been killed, along with 31 palestinians, during the uprising. arab baeeds ambassadors at the u.n. meet today to discuss the crisis. johnathan vigliotti has our report from jerusalem. >> reporter: heavily armed israeli soldiers checked vehicles this morning. the effort one of many measures officials are taking to stop a wave of violence in the region,

including several random stabbings. on wednesday, israeli authorities shot and killed a palestinian who allegedly tried to stab security forces outside jerusalem's old city. another palestinian who reportedly stabbed a 70-year-old israeli woman at a crowded bus station in the holy city was also killed. as the situation intensifies, the israeli government has eased gun laws here to allow citizens to defend themselves and so far officials say several armed citizens have helped prevent attacks. the white house is urging both sides to take steps to deescalate the tension. >> ultimately ending this conflict will make decisions to end this crisis. >> reporter: both sides remain deeply divided. on wednesday, prime minister benjamin netanyahu accused the palestinians of sabotaging the peace process and israeli prime minister mahmoud abbas claimed it on israeli.

will travel to the region soon to meet with leaders from both sides. johnathan vigliotti, cbs news, jerusalem. six members of a secretive church sect in new york state are under arrest for allegedly beating to death a teenager and seriously injuring his younger brother. the church is located in new hartford in upstate new york, about 250 miles north of new york city. two of those in custody are the boys' parents. isana diaz reports. >> reporter: 65-year-old bruce leonard and his 59-year-old wife debra are charged with manslaughter after police say they beat their 19-year-old son lucas to death. >> we are not alleging they intended to kill their son but alleging they tried to seriously hurt their son and, ultimately, he died from those injuries. >> reporter: the new hartford police chief says lucas and his 17-year-old brother christopher were brutally attacked inside the world of life christian church sanctuary after sunday evening services. investigators say church members

counseling session. >> both brothers were continually subjected to physical punishment over the course of several hours in the hopes that each would confess the prior sins and ask for forgiveness. >> reporter: the police complainat says lucas suffered injuries to the thigh and other areas of his body. he stopped breathing and taken to the hospital later. later, police stormed the church and found christopher brutally beaten. the boys sister and his his parents and others are accused of assaulting christopher. sarah jones lived next to the church. >> they seemed odd and secluded, and i thought something, but i could never pinpoint exactly what. >> reporter: the police do not know what the perceived teens' sins were that prompted the attack. adriana diaz, for cbs news. donald trump has set his

sights on bernie sanders. speaking at a rally yesterday saying sanders is a maniac and pushing hillary clinton further to the left. >> i watched hillary last night, we are going to give this and give that. the poor woman. she has to give everything away because this maniac that was standing on her right is giving everything away, so she is following! that is what is happening! this socialist/communist, okay? nobody wants to say it. >> last night, sanders tweeted what this campaign is about is whether we can mobilize our people to take back our government from a handful of billionaires. a group that opposes hillary clinton aired a benghazi-related tv ad during tuesday night's debate. >> dear hillary clinton. i want to ask you why you ignored calls for help in benghazi. >> it shows the grave of ambassador chris stevens who was killed in the attack and the photos of three other american victims. the ad portrays the victims as

on the cbs "moneywatch." a famous chef reaching a tipping point and a car that drives itself. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. >> a new system from tesla looks like a game-changer. it's a lane-changer. tesla's new autopilot system let's cars change lanes by themselves. tesla systems, like others, keeps the car in lane and can parallel park and find parking spaces. but the lane changing feature is an industry first. tesla will get the autopilot system through an software update. the dow lost 157 points. the s&p closed down and the nasdaq we will 13. walmart was the biggest loser in the the s&p 500 suffering its biggest one-day loss in almost 30 years. walmart's stock was down 10%. the retail giant announced it excepts its profits to fall due to intensifying competition and unfavorable exchanges.

could fall by as much as 12%. the video service netflix saw a 2% drop in its stock. it was more than anticipated. that raised fears it may have trouble attracting more subscribers in its largest market. netflix blames the shortfall on a problem with processing credit cards. square, the mobile payment company, is going public. the company filed its initial public offering. square has been expanding into other areas of business. earlier, square announced the new credit card and phone reader that lets businesses accept apple pay and new chip credit cards. danny meyer is eliminating tipping at 13 of his new york city restaurants. the new policy starts late next month and means higher menu prices by 20% to 25%. the menu will explain the prices include hospitality. meyer says by ending tips and raising prices he hopes to increase the pay for other

the country. german authorities this morning said they are ordering volkswagen to recall 2.4 million of its vehicles in germany, that is after the automaker admitted to cheating on diesel emissions tests. vw said last month that installed software in diesel vehicles intended to mislead u.s. regulators about emissions. it has said assess many as 11 million vehicles worldwide have been affected. lamar odom in hours before his hospitalization and bad luck for lottery winners in illinois. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstands. "usa today" reports former nba player lamar odom is improving at the hospital this morning.

husband of khloe kardashian was found unconscious at the love ranch in nevada on tuesday. they tried to stabilize odom before paramedics arrived on tuesday. >> all i could think was i hope i really get the opportunity to tell this guy, first of all, that he is going to be okay, but tell him, you know, this really scared the hell out of all of us and please don't do this any more. >> odom last played in the nba back in 2013. the stars and stripes and president obama will award the medal of honor to 32-year-old army captain florent groberg. the white house says the french-born american and another soldier tackled a suicide bomber in afghanistan in 2012 as the attacker's vest went off. they protected several senior officers during an ambush. groberg suffered a badly injured leg in the blast. the "chicago tribune" reports that lottery players who won't get cash for their winnings, just an iou. the lottery of illinois has run

out of money. until state lawmakers reach a budget deal. the lottery began delaying payments for prizes of more than 25,000 back in july. "the new york times" reports an american scholar discovered the earliest known draft of the king james bible in cambridge. 1608. the king james translation of the bible was eventually published in 1611 and became one of the most influential books in english history. "wall street journal" reports the justice department and fbi are investigating the business of daily fantasy sports. agents have been contacting customers of draftkings. the justice department is reviewing the legality of sites in which customers pay money to draft virtual sports teams. the teams compete against one another for prize money based on athletes' real-world performance. up next in sports, signature move.

retail giant target says it's investigating a shocking incident at a store in san jose. the sexually explicit recording was played over the public address system yesterday. a warning -- some of what you're about to hear may not be suitable for younger viewers. bety yu of our san francisco station kpix reports. >> reporter: this was not what shoppers at the westgate mall target came in for, with sounds like porn, loud and clear on the intercom. >> i felt violated. and my body said, wait a minute, this ain't right. so i was uneasy. >> reporter: so were a lot of other shoppers, including mothers with babies. the customer who shot the three and a half minute cell phone video says sexually explicit moans and groans were bad enough.
