th wke lkayocoeritouhisg ou 6 years since instagram started snapping up users in a flash. later, the social media phenomenon keeps finding new ways to capture hearts a a eyes. the co- founders gave cbs this morning anchor gayle king an unfiltered look at how instagram found its focus. here in silicon valley, kevin systrom has proven a picture is worth *more* than a thousand words. (nat- "remember 75 percent of the people whohose instagram are not inside the united states) in october 2010, systrom and co founder mike kreiger launched instagram, a photo sharing app now used by *400 million people* around the world. (gayle king) 16:15:34;12 when it started, five years ago, neither one of you could have predicted or expected this. so what was the expectation? what was your hope for this compapa? (kevin systrom) 16:15:54;0 we pressed the button a little bit after midnight to launch it to the apple app store. and immediately, people just started flowing in, all these email addresses singing up. the first day, we had 25,000

people sign up. and, you know, both of us kind of looked at each other and-- (gayle king) 16:16:32;05 saidid"whoa." (kevin systrom) 16:16:33;08 yeah. before developing instagram, systrom called on krieger a soware engineer, to work on a location sharing app called "burbn" (gayle king) 16:20:34;14 what did he say he wanted to do? (mike krieger) 16:20:36;16 the website captured it really well. so he went to bourbon.com. it's a new way of communicating and sharing in the real world and i was excited about being able to help people ll their stories when they're out and abouou not when they're at theiriromputers at home, yo know, downloading 100 photos from their last weekend, but that instant right then and there. (gayle king) 16:20:59;09 yeah. what did you see, kevin? (kevin systrom) 16:21:04;19 a hope and a dream and not much reality. so we just had to, like, go after the idea that we could create an app that let people take advantage of the phone in their pock. t staeard-i was like, "you know, we've been working on this idea for a while, but i think there's something to this photos thing." and-- and he was like, "wait, i just left my job (laugh) to work with you on this apphat i really like and now you're saying we're gonna switch the idea?" (laugh) well, that's the word they use. so there was this reality check where mike and i realized we had to work on something more compelling. 16:2:254;05 but we sat down in a om together one of t tse first days, and we listed out the things that people loved the most about%bourbon. at the very top was photography. and we just circled it and i remember we crossed everything off. and then from that point forward, we worked on instagram. today systrom and krieger are joined by a team of 250 employees. instagram's headquaters shared with other tech businesses like their parent company facebook k s the community feel of a college campus. (nat) inside there are conference rooms named after popular hashtags like #tbt and #selfie where employees strategize to create new ideas. (gayle king) 16:22:23;19 i love the name instagram. it comes from where? (mike krieger) 16:22:30;03 it's from a very long brainstorming exercise. 's also helpful havivi a co-founder, because we k kw the nd of things we had to get

selfies? (kevin systrom) 16:42:00;07 if you look at art throughout history, a dominant subject is pictures of people. so, like, portraits are not a new thing. it just means that now instead of paying someone to paint your portrait, you can tap a button and you have an instant portrait. and it's'sindaool to think of, likekean entire generation of people who get to o cord their lives and look back on them. gayle king: 16:48:26;05 i've seen more ads on instagram. is that a good thing? is that here to stay? mike krieger: 16:48:36;03 (laugh) yes-- kevin systrom: 16:48:36;02 well, i have-- gayle king: 16:48:35;16 make it stop, kevin. make it stop, mike-- kevin systrom: 16:48:36;29 no, i understand. two things, one isis gaylylking: 16:48:39;21 yeah, but you're going through your feed, and then there's an ad. kevin systrom: 16:48:41;20 yeah, mike`krieger: 16:48:43;04 well-- (laugh) gayle king: 16:48:43;27 you're like, "yeah." mike krieger: 16:48:43;08 --someone's gotta pay the bills.
