halloween night. 3 you might have noticed there's been strange weather across the country recently. as meteorologist cat taylor shows us... it's all thanks to a phenomenon in the pacific ocean. 3 el nino...it has been big news for months...but what *is* el nino...and what does it mean for siouxland? "to understand el nino, you have to understand all 3 phases of enso-el nino southern oscillation. with these 3 phases you have el nino, la nina, and neutral conditions." "we're going to do an experiment to explain how el nino works." normally...during what we call the neutral phase...trade winds are moderate...like this.just a bit of warm water move's west...*some* cold water moves up to the surface.when *la nina* starts...the trade winds get stronger.that pushes warm water west...and a *lot* of cold water comes up from below. when the trade winds weaken... that's when *el l no* happens...trade winds can shut off f mpletely...even revevee. then we get warm water sloshing back east very quickly.it can even go down farther into the ocean than normal. el nino itself happens far away from siouxland...it's in the pacific ocean...but it can still affect weather here. during that first neutral phase...trade winds are normal. this is where the polar jetstream and the subtropical jetstream normally sit.during la nina...strong trade winds dominate...that makes the polar jet move south and the subtropical jet move north. that lets cool canadian air easily flow into siouxland. during el nino though...the opposite happens.the trade winds die out.the subtropical jetstream dominates...and the polar jetstream is much farther north...so siouxland stays warm.you're going to notice el nino the most during winter, but how is it going to affect you? in el nino explained part 2 i'll talk with a national weather service hydrologist to find out what el nino means for siouxland. meteorologist cat taylor, siouxland news. 3 thth year's capitol this year's
