3 isis has taken responsibility for the crash over russia's involvement in syria. but the group hasn't provided any evidence to support that claim yet. 3 one man is in morning after a standoff with police in cherokee yesterday.it happened about two o'clock yesterday... homes in the area of oak knoll drive near the cemetery were evacuated. witnesses say units from quite a few law enforcement agencies... even a swat team from the iowa state patrol... surrounded the home on oak knoll drive. as a security precaution... the *entire neighborhood* was evacuated and the road blocked off about a quarter - mile from the home. the standoff went on for hours... it ended just after 10:30 last night... the suspect

surrendered peacefully. 3 a c - f construction worker is stabbed on his way to work... and his girlfriend is charged with the crime.28 - year - old mark jones was being driven to work just before 6 yesterday morning when he was stabbed near the intersection of 225th street and allison avenue in rural woodbury county. he was taken to mercy medical center with what investigators are calling non - life threatening injuries.his girlfriend... 21 - year - old katherine burdett has been arrested 3 and charged with aggravated domestic assault.she's being held in the woodbury county jail 3 on 5 - thousand dollars bond. 3 a memorial service for a child killed in a fire a week ago will be held today.the service for 3 - year - old nico torres will be held later today with visitation from 12 pm to 1 pm. 3 a prayer service will happen at 1 o'clock at saint michaels church in south sioux city. the funeral will be open to the public to pay thier

3 after firing two employees for from the waste water treatment plant... now the city of sioux city's taking steps to make sure things are done right from now on.yesterday the city council got a tour of the plant to get a better idea of how it works. they also learned about new proceedures that are in place after the firing of two former plant employees. those workers were accused of failing to follow testing of failing to were accused those workers were accused of failing to follow testing rules and regulations... and fudging results. now those tests are being done *every* day. 3 "we are doing some extra testing above and beyond with the dnr has been requiring. we are sampling several times a day, even though they have not asked us to do so. we just want to prove that we are meeting the requirements. "the council was also briefed on the trial of a new waste treatment method that could reduce costs in the future. and... they were told about changes and additions that might be needed at the plant in the future.

3 sioux city's airport board is trying to plan for 20 - 16. 3 in a joint meeting between the board and the city council... officials talked about the aiport might offer next year. here's what complicates the plan... the airport's only airline hadn't submitted a bid to continue offering service to and from sioux city next year yet. american airlines faced a midnight deadline to request being part of the federal government's essential air service program. american airlines has operated two flights a day between sioux city and chicago since 20 - 13... getting a subsidy from the federal aviation administration to do that. 3 "the service we offer to get out of sioux city and back to sioux city and making that flexible for people that want to go in out of here, secondly our infrastructure, our runway, the hanger space, it goes for the airport as well air national gaurd "gaurd "the airport also wants to help pay for repairs to one of the taxiways and hangars damaged by last august's

improvements to the grounds. 3 health officials in woodbury county are warning people with a dangerous bacterial infection to stay home.siouxland district health says anyone with diarrhea should stay home to avoid spreading the shigellosis bacteria. so far... forty - two cases of shigellosis infections have been reported in woodbury county... health department officials expect that number to go up. here's a comparison for you... in 20 - 14... the county recorded just *one* case of shigellosis infection. none of the 42 people infected so far have had to go to the hospital. officials say the best way to *prevent* the spread of this infection is to wash your hands with soap and warm water. 3 unity point health saint luke's has a special new room for its young patients.it's a themed patient room especially for kids... and the theme is *cars.* it'll be used by children's

miracle network patients at the hospital. more than 14 - thousand kids in siouxland each year get treatment at saint luke's. 3 "we have a really effect healing environment it could mean a short stay for kids, it reduces their stress. and so what we really want to stress is should feel like kids when they are in the hospital. they should still feel, act, and think like a kids. and i certain this is a room that is gonna fire on all cylinders and let kids do 3 that. ."sioux city ford - lincoln donated 12 - thousand 5 - hundred dollars to help decorate and equip the new room. 3 a siouxland man is getting a new look... it's because of his battle against cancer. our own siouxland news reporter kayla novak has more on an associate professor at morningside college who's teaching his students a lesson about life. 3 it's been 40 years since mark high-stad (heistad) has seen his chin. when he graduated high school he challenged his brother to see who could grow their beard longer. since he has refused to completely shave his beard. he has only trimmed it for work, weddings, and funerals. his beard grew down to his chest and ended just about where doctors found his asophogal cancer. before

he continues his chemo treatments, the iconic beard must go. so, the mass communication department organized the ceremony to say good bye to the whiskers. "the support i have gotten from family, from collegues, from students, has been overwhelming. " the students were the first to take a whack at it. but ....since his students are amatuers... joe peters of crown barber had the honor of giving high - stad a brand new smooth face. when he first looked into the mirror, he did not even recognize himself. "it was surprising. i didn't know what to expect, but i didn't expect this." heistad hasn't decided if he'll need to wear a name tag to class from now on. he'll continue teaching this fall and, if all goes well... he will return for the spring semester. kayla novak

3 the search for answers in the russian plane crash is white hot right now... but what exactly are investigators looking for that could help them see if a bomb was involved? c - b - s news correspondent kris van cleave asks an aviation expert. 3 ((sot q & a on bomb residue 14:14:09))kvc: can explosive residue survive that kind of fire?rosenker: absolutely. they'll get a good reading by swabbing this, this residue will remain even in a fire, even if its underwater. we went over video from the crash scene with former national transportation safety board chair mark rosenker. he says it appears that the tail broke off before fire engulfed the airbus jet --landing miles away, largely intact.((sot 14:05:52)) kvc: this kind of debris, what are you looking for?rosenker: you are looking at the edges particularly to see how they may have come apart from the main part of the fuselage , did it look like there was corrosion, did it look like a fracture, did it look like there was a structural deformity. in the days immediately after malyasia flight 17 was shot down over ukraine --our mark phillips was able to spot clear signs the plane was hit by a missile...((nats from phillips standup))rosenker says determing a bomb blast is not as straight forward. 3 a road construction project in morningside is getting *another* extension to it's completion deadline.glenn avenue has been closed between south cecelia street and south martha street since the beginning of june. the project was supposed to be done by the end of august. that's been extended twice already... first to the end

end of october. *now* the city says that stretch of road will stay closed until the end of *november.* the new extension is to give the contractor time to finish paving... sidewalk installation... and sod placement. 3 good news from the sioux city school district... student enrollment is growing. 3 the district says as of october 1st... it had 14 - thousand 614 students enrolled in its schools for the 2015 - 16 school year. that's an increase of 283 students over last school year. over the past four years... enrollment has grown by almost 700 students. that october 1st count is important because it's a major factor in finding out how much money the district gets from the state of iowa. 3 a south sioux city elementary school teacher is getting ready for tonight's siouxland sleepout.nicholas (cleave) kleve teaches 5th grade at lewis and clark elementary in south sioux. each year for the last six years...

(cleave)'s kleve's class has helped him get ready to be a part of the sleepout. they work on the project before school and during recess... and also help raise money to help fight homelessness in siouxland. 3 "pretty cool that we were going to help the homeless by decorating a box and that mr. kleve is going to sleep in a baseball field."(8secs)"i love teaching the life lessons where we can teach these young people how they can give back to the world and how they can be decent human beings and help the world become a better place and change the world for the better."(11secs) 3 so far... 600 students that the people they hang out with can influence their decision making... and their efforts in the classroom. 3 "sports world is made up a former football players and we are going all over area speaking to young people challenging them to make good decisions and life is a series of choices. to stay away from drugs and alcohol, make positive choices that cause them to be the champions they were created to be."neal ended his talk today by reminding the students to dream big and set high goals in life. 3 sledding... snow ball fights... and snowmen are all things you might typically see on a snow day when classes have been cancelled. but what you might not see... is what goes into deciding whether to cancel school in the first place. our own siouxland news reporter kayla novak takes a look. 3 the process starts as early as three a-m. superintendents and their teams will start driving the bus routes to try and figure out the road conditions. they might also call the national weather service and other local school districts to ask how they think the road conditions will be for the bus routes. butthere is no *one* formula for snow day closures. school could be cancelled based on road conditions, a blizzard on the way, andsometimes snow

isn't even a factor. they could cancel just because it is a very cold day. but, when making the final call, safety is first priority. 3 good morning, (downtown sioux city)... it's (34 degrees) outside at (time)... as we take a look from our (sponsor) camera. 3 sailors off the coast of italy rescued a three - month - old dog from the sea. now... as c - n - n's (genie) jeanne (mows) moos shows us... that dog and his tale of survivor is getting attention all over the world. 3 --reporter pkg-as follows-- this is the story of a labrador retriever... retrieved from the sea. it happened off the coast of italy.6 sailors from the savoia yacht club were sailing the gulf of naples , with no other vessels in sight, when something made a beeline for their boat...(lino grosso/savoia yacht club) "we thought we are crazy. this dog is coming from the sky. it's impossible."lino grosso shot the rescue. the dog was a 3- month old named noodle.though his rescuers gave him another name...(lino grosso/savoia yacht club) "we called the dog moze."moses, best known for... (nats of ten commandments) parting the sea.the part noodle's rescuers didn't know was that the pup had been riding a hydrofoil ferry like this with his brand new owner when he slipped his leash and fell into the sea.(jeanne moos/reporting) "the owner tried to get the ferry to stop, to go back and look for the pup, but crew members refused saying the dog would already have drowned."but half an hour or more later, noodle was still dog paddling for dear life...(nats:) " bravo bravo."he was trembling and crying as he was cuddled... cuddled and rubbed and covered with a jacket . back on land he was handed over to his new family. there was anger at the ferry crew.(lino grosso/savoia yacht club) "really wrong thing because dog was alive and they didn't try to find

3 a road construction project in morningside is getting *another* extension to it's completion deadline.glenn avenue has been closed between south cecelia street and south martha street since the beginning of june. the project was supposed to be done by the end of august. that's been extended twice already... first to the end of september, then to the end of october. *now* the city says that stretch of road will remain closed until the end of *november*. the new extension is to give the contractor time to complete paving, sidewalk installation and sod placement. 3 good news from the sioux city school district... student enrollment continues to grow. 3 the district says as of october 1st, it had 14- thousand 614 students enrolled in its schools for the 2015-16 school year. that's an increase of 283 students over last school year. over the past four years, enrollment has grown by nearly 700 students. that october 1st count is important. it's a major factor in determining how much money the district

3 a south sioux city elementary school teacher is getting ready for tomorrow night's siouxland sleepout.nicholas kleve ("cleave) teaches 5th grade at lewis and clark elementary in south sioux. each year for the last six years... kleve's class has helped him get ready to take part in the sleepout. they work on the project before school and during recess... and also help raise money to help fight homelessness in siouxland. 3 "pretty cool that we were going to help the homeless by decorating a box and that mr. kleve is going to sleep in a baseball "i love teaching the life lessons where we can they can give back to the world and how they can be the world become a better place and change the world for the better."(11secs) 3 so far... kleve and his class have raised $200 for the sleepout. that event will take place tonight at lewis and clark park in sioux city... and our jetske wauran will be there live at 5 and 10.
